Summer Baseball Update
By: Brian Foley Editor of The College Baseball Blog
After a disappointing finish in the College World Series, the Hurricanes players split up to go to many different college leagues. Most of the top players headed to Cape Cod to take part in the heavily competitive and strong baseball league. Two players were invited to take part in the USA National Team program which is currently taking part in the FISU games in Czech Republic after winning the Haarlem Baseball Week with two victories over the Cuban Olympic Team.
The Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League have Yasmani Grandal and David DiNatale. Both players have had disappointing summers as both players have struggled with the quality of the pitchers they are facing day in and day out while playing with a wood bat.
Grandal has played in only six games with 18 at-bats accumulating a batting average of .222 with no extra base hits or RBI. DiNatale has been in 12 games but has been a disaster at the plate where he has a .108 average with only one extra base hit and two RBI. He has 15 strikeouts out of his 37 official at bats.
Eric Erickson who entered the 2008 campaign as the ace of the Miami staff but was over taken by the end of the year by Chris Hernandez is a member of the Orleans Cardinals.
He has made three starts on the year with a 1-1 record with a 1.50 ERA with a complete game. He has struck out 16 batters in his 18 innings of work. He has only allowed two walks this summer as he is keeping control of his quality pitches.
Ryan Jackson and Chris Hernandez both became members of the 2008 USA National Team bypassing a chance to play in the Cape Cod League.
Jackson has been playing second base due to an overload of shortstops on the team where he has struggled making four errors but making a great double play against Cuba this past Sunday. Jackson has appeared in 15 games where he has a .255 average with a double and a triple while driving in nine runs.
Hernandez has a 1-0 record in four appearances (two starts) with 9.2 innings of work. He has only allowed three hits but has walked a high amount of batters with four on the year. He has held opponents to a .094 batting average against.

For the record, I predict 10-2.

Scum, coming from the fan of a team that had a cheating scandal for a music test and whose best player was arrested for drug and gun charges, and whose HC said the scandal didn't worry him one bit....can only be a seriuos case of PROJECTION! lol
I actually enjoy addressing him by what he calls himself. I think it's hilarious. Call a person what they tell you to call them, I say. lol

Mitch...10-2: Protected by Voodoo.

dlu,
Thanks for your concern on the last blog.
I'm still 100% pure Cane from way back in the otis anderson days.
The reason you see me playing devils advocate and sticking to 8-4 is;
A. Someone on here has to do it.
B. No one on here wants to do it.
C. The differnce between 9-3 and 8-4 is a missed field goal or a flat second half or a couple bad calls.

Can I get one more to make it an even 6? Everyone seems to be pointing a Miami's young/inexperience QBs, but that will be Miami strength. If you watched both Marve and Harris in high school, both thrived under pressure. They love the prime-time spotlight, so I'm not worried about their youth at the QB position that's Nix job not to put them in failing positions -- guess we'll see if coaching is really over-rated.
Miami have many good veteran players on the team, it's just hard trying to play when other teams are stacking the box with 8, and the defense only gets to rest 3 plays and back on the field.
We have QBs that can stretch the field, and receivers who know the ball will be at the spot waiting when they get there. No excuses...12-0. GO CANES!

JFK was a 12%er
"The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were.”

So with the two QB system confirmed, it sounds like calling Mr. Football 1 and 2 the "MF'ers" could work.
Posted by: Old Skool | July 17, 2008 at 08:47 PM
The 2 QB system breaks down like this:
Mr. Football I takes the 1st half and puts the first half of the nails int he coffin.
Then Mr. Football II takes over sometime in the 2nd half to show just how much better the 2nd unit is than the opponents' 1st string. Wash, rinse, repeat times 8.

Perfect timing for a baseball blog, 86 --- thx - i caught a game of CCL baseball three weekends about down in Hyannis -- if you want Americanna AND great amateur ball --- check it on a cool NE evening --- awesome.
But another solid blog --- b/c it:
> cools the jets of all us pigkinners...
> reminds us how important baseball is to the U
> gives credit to some - soon to be - professional ballplayers
> fills the gap for a night w/o pro-ball (at least in my neck of the woods)
and reminds us that Hernandez AND Jackson are great additions to the Nat'l team.
Morris is still the sheet
the Light is still the place
and the U is still where baseball titles matter...
CANES, baaby

With the 2 QB system, I guess Cook gets redshirt which is not a bad thing. At least we'll have serious depth at the QB position.
Posted by: MDCane | July 17, 2008 at 08:57 PM
It will be pretty amusing when the second unit outscores the first unit, like Bill Waltons freshmen beating UCLA's national champ team

When the second unit outscores the first unit you will hear, and I quote and eloquent Canespace blogger -- "Shannon has no class"

MD, ^^^^^^^^^^^^^THAT IS THE TRUTH!
But we're a year or so away from those days.
But notice that NEVER happened with Medioker teams. Never. He never prepared anyone to reload, no one for Dorsey, Vilma, DJ, Taylor, Gore, Hester, Parrish, Wilfork, the entire 2001 OL, no one other than K-II for Shockey, and I don't give credit for that.

Did yall read what Manny wrote about Jack McClinton? HE OUTPLAYED STEPHEN CURRY, NICK CALATHES & TYRESE RICE!!! Jack could be a national player of the year finalist.
Add in the most athletic forward tandem in the country Daequan Jones & Dwayne Collins. Plus role players Hurdle, Graham, Dews, Asbury, Rios, Gamble, McGowan & Thomas. THEY'RE LOADED! The hoops team will be better than the baseball & football teams. THEY'RE DESTINED TO BE THE BEST HOOPS TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF DA "U"! but they get no love on a site that's all about da "U"? That's FUKK SHYT...

Can you imagine Marve getting a three touchdawn lead on somebody and Jacory comes in and hits a 70 yarder for td right off the bench.
YOWZA!!!

"Can you imagine Marve getting a three touchdawn lead on somebody and Jacory comes in and hits a 70 yarder for td right off the bench."
That's what'll be scary. The second string is going to be HUNGRY. And Shannon won't be telling Nix to pull in the claws, either.
Posted by: dj moonbat | July 17, 2008 at 09:39 PM
dj, I hear ya!
Jacory's "boyz" will want to get him playing time, they will amp up when he hits the huddle. This is the healthiest QB competition in forever

If we get a three TD lead on anybody this year I will be pleased. When we get it on the Gators in the Swamp I will be giddy!
Posted by: 86Cane | July 17, 2008 at 09:42 PM
2 QB's... As I recall, I was quoting that we will be splitting duties in December and many said I was nutz... Hummm
I kinda like the Two-Headed Dragon approach, as spoken by the sporting agencies for a name...
I can hear it Now... "Miami has a Two Headed Dragon circling the triangle, named MF One and Two. Both have sharp teeth, have a nasty spear for a tail and can torch ya for a TD in a heart beat!!!... The ACC is no longer safe!
Go Canes

Don't know if U saw this the other night but it is GOOD stuff from a new contributor:
Here are some of my articles:

It's actually funny because everyone at my work calls me out for always writing about the Hurricanes, but I can't help it, I bleed Orange and Green.

86'
It's not just Dwayne Collins. Folks on here always talk about da "U" mentallity. The last 2 years the football team underachieved. The baseball team underachieved & choked in the colleg World Series. The hoops team was picked to finish last in the ACC. Haith & Jack & them said FUKK THAT! They finished in the top 1/2 of the ACC, advanced to the 2nd round of the "big dance". They overachieved in all phases of the game & left everything on the court in every game. While Morris, Shannon & them was with the bullshyt, Haith & them was the epitome of true "U"...
Posted by: CoCane | July 17, 2008 at 09:50 PM
It makes me wonder. Are any of you true "U"??? Or just fairweather football fans...
Posted by: CoCane | July 17, 2008 at 09:53 PM
solar, It is good to be flexible, actually I appreciate the point of views. I just noticed quite a change over time and commented on it.
Posted by: dlu | July 17, 2008 at 09:58 PM
I just picture MF2 gliding up to practice on his Schiwnn, hops off, pulls a half dozen rubber bands up his calves to hold his socks up and barks "huddle up!"
Can you say Clark Kent?
