So what does it take these days to land the number one player in the Country? Well if you are the University of Tennessee and you want a certain running back from Kansas, then you are obviously willing to spend over two million dollars to get the job done.
Some recent reports indicate that under new head coach Lane Kiffin, Tennessee alledgedly spent $835,908 from December 1 to National Signing Day on February 4. It seems Kiffin plans to spend most of his time at UT in the passing lane spending, I mean speeding, right by other SEC schools on his way to conduct home visits with new recruits.
For instance, receipts for travel expenses over one week in January for offensive coordinator Jim Chaney cost UT $6,414, much of which went to cover airfare costs. Chaney was the lead recruiter in UT's pursuit of tailback Bryce Brown from Wichita, Kansas, who Rivals.com rated as the best prospect in the country.
History shows that Tennessee apparently is not shy about spending some significant cash flow to lure high school students to their campus. NCAA records show that in 2007-08 UT spent $1,081,249 which is actually a little less than the Volunteers spent in 2006-07 when they laid out $1,311,893 to get these young "student-athletes" to come to Rocky Top.
Bryce Brown, the number one recruit in the 2009 class, signed with UT on March 16. UT's recruiting spending is part of its overall $87.5-million athletic department budget.
In their defense, UT has to travel more than many of their competitors who have the luxury of relying more on in-state talent. This is evidenced by the fact that of UT's 22 signees for the 2009 class, 16 are from outside Tennessee's borders.
Kiffin's efforts did not go unoticed by Tennessee fans. The Volunteer faithful bought 1,500 single game tickets in an hour this week after they went on sale.
Here is some information on recruiting spending we recently found out in Cyberspace:
College Recruiting Expenses vs. College Football Recruiting Rankings

I'm taking a timed online traffic ticket course and it is awful. Two of the sections are 15 mins, two are 10 mins, two are 25 mins, one is 28 mins and two are 55 f*****g minutes.
I have to sit here and wait for 13 minutes after I answer the questions at the bottom of the page in 2 minutes.
You can't advance to the next page until the clock hits 00:00.
By the way, why is Duke spending $1.2 Million on recruiting with a 78 ranking? Don't you have to have some smarts to be Duke? Well, spending $8,500 more than Ohio State and having your class rank 63 spots lower .. as well as not having near the type team Tressel Vest fields .. doesn't sound to smarts to mes.

interesting post. great research!
yea that was great research soup ;)
Six those totals were for all sports recruiting for each school
football, basketball, baseball, track, etc.
Duke might pay a lot of parents big bucks to see their kid playing basketball at Duke.

hmm that could change things considerably if that is all sports.
UT has successfull football, basketball and women's basketball programs. So that would increase spending for all programs.
Does anybody have the numbers for UM football recruiting? Very curious to know how much we spent this last year.

very interesting article, but if it is all sports it makes more sense (cents?)...
solar- i dunno about duke paying parents... i could just be naive, but i think duke pretty much sells itself as a basketball school.

speaking of stickers...
any other spacer firefighters here? there's a local guy that started making custom IAFF window stickers that incorporate team logos/ colors. some guys at work have gotten different ones, and they look good. if you're interested in a 'Canes sticker (and a firefighter, sorry guys, not my rule) drop an email to fzzdzz@yahoo.com, and i'll get details.

What did Miami spend? It's almost football season!
Posted by: 561 CANE | June 18, 2009 at 09:02 AM
One thing I noticed about a couple of our targets lately (Daunte Carr ? ) is that they are also being recruited by the stanfords, vanderbilts, dukes, etc... other schools that prize and require intelligence as much as we do.
If we just start winning, we'll have it all.
Posted by: DZ8 | June 18, 2009 at 09:07 AM
Miami might not have to disclose what they spend since it's a private school.

Notre Dame $1,758,300 for recruits, triple that for coaches, maybe a mil more for equipment and you have a sweet 6-6 regular season.

Anybody think the season goes differently if we make that TD grab in the end of the game against UNC?
Doesn't Marve get instant credibility for a comeback TD drive? Does the team come out with all kinds of fire against FSU instead of flat and lethargic?
Just curious about anybodys thoughts? That game really was a bummer along with the epic choke job of calls by Nix in FSU redzone down by less than a score. Causing us to kick a field goal and then get lit up on 3rd and forever with a fuggin' simple draw by A.Smith for a TD...!!!
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | June 18, 2009 at 10:04 AM
I got lambasted for suggesting that Mr. Mouth NEEDED to make that catch. I can name 10 former WR's that make that catch.
And don't start with the "it was over his head" BS. Other WR's make it do it's NOT over their head. They make the play.
They make the TD happen.
That loss went a long way in determining the final outcome of the season.
82 should have been the hero but instead he proved what I've been saying about those kids for a looooong time:
They weren't good enough. It's the difference between scoring ok a tough throw and catch or having a ball sail just-this-close past your fingertips.
Posted by: The Truth | June 18, 2009 at 10:19 AM
Is it me, or after that missed pass did it not seem Bobby Drama didn't have the same confidence the rest of the season throwing at least?
Like he didn't fully trust his receivers and/or Nix.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | June 18, 2009 at 10:32 AM
The UNC game was bad #82 shoulda coulda but didnt, as FSU goes they just killed us. I hate when people say we came back, cause we didnt they tried really hard to lose, but as Truth said we were not good enough.
Posted by: DATcane | June 18, 2009 at 10:38 AM
And isn't it interesting how football is known and beloved internationally but is not international?
I mean there is no Iraqi national football team, no football in the Olympics and no parody with European pro teams wooing N.F.L. stars with big time contracts and the lure of not paying taxes on the outstanding Euro.... Very interesting!
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | June 18, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Booby Drama might not have trust in Nix but I didn't think it affected his trust with receivers. Who knows, he was quick to tuck and run thru out the year.
Kayne woulda coulda shoulda, but didn't. Now he'll be maybe looking for work up north or in an arena.
Agree Canesaw, we win UNC and the season has a different vibe to it. But that could be said about many things and the past won't help us now.

Truth.
You are right. Everyone forgets, hell based on football experience, Kayne actually was only a senior in HS (only playing his 4th year of organized football)! For that alone, you have to understand that a guy with ONLY 4 years experience can come in a be a major contributor??? Either he's a major freak, or talent is down! I think its a little of both.
Also for those with the AllCanes highlight video, look at that play. #85 was by himself in the end zone and Bobby Drama throws to #82 who DOES NOT make the catch. If he goes through his progressions, he sees #85 in the corner of the end zone by himself and we beat UNC.
Shoulda Woulda Coulda!

You know I have so much for FSU as a program. It's pathetic all the whining coming from Tally
They know they did wrong. They know they've gotten away with murder in the past with nothing done at all. Just take your slap on the wrist and let it go.
You too Bowden...quit your yapping. You won't retire with the most wins. No one will argue there was a better coach than you regardless.
