So now that Canes fans have voted and we know that the majority of Canespacers believe that the Canes will win three of their first four games (41%) and finish the season at 10-2 (45%) we want to know the details of how this is all going to happen.
Since it was recently revealed to all of us that these accomplishments happen from the talented players on the field and NOT from any coaching they may receive, we want your votes on which players are going to make all this winning happen. So now we ask that you vote here and vote often for your leading rusher, receiver and tackler for the 2009 season:
Leading Rusher: Graig Cooper lead the Canes with 841 yards in 2008. This year Cooper, 2008 starter Javaris James and Emerald Nut Bowl star Lee Chambers will be pushed by the hard running former Safety Damien Berry and incoming freshmen Mike James and Lamar Miller. Vote now:
Leading Receiver: Last year Aldarius Johnson, as most people predicted, led the team in catches and yards. LaRon "BIG" Byrd led the Canes in TDs with four. This year many predict that it will be Thearon Collier who goes big and deep and often. What do you think?
Leading Tackler: Last year Glenn "I can't tackle but I can really" Cook led the team in this category. The second leading tackler, Safety Anthony Reddick, is also no longer taking up space on the field. So in 2009 who is going to lead this team in tackles?
first!!!!!

It's Graig, not Craig Cooper!

Craig or Graig is average anyway, so who cares? He is a light weight, scat back who goes from a tip of the hand.
Mike James will blow past him by 6 games into this season.
Lamar Miller too.

Gotta love our most recent verbal "commitment" by Nelson:
Asked if the UM decision is a done deal, Nelson said, "It's 25-45 percent I might be open, but for right now I'm with the Canes."
Anybody ever try to propose with these kinds of lines?

my rebuttal to CVS
CVS - COKER spread disease and famine through this program.
We already know what.
1. The coaches got lazy with recruiting. Instead of doing their own recruiting they were relying on websites
2. The players started feeling entitlement and expected spots. Kyle expected to be the starting QB without working for it and without getting competition. That is why for a year or two Coker didn't recruit any top QB's.
3. Coker lost control of his players because he was more of a buddy and less of a motivator. That was fine when he had leaders but when leaders were gone and in the NFL, he didn't know how to tell these kids to work. So they lost respect for him
4. The FACT that a man who won a national championship, lost one, and won over 70 percent of his games with a MAJOR MAJOR D-1 program still couldn't find a job.. Any job at a D-1 program speaks very loudly.
5. I know we have leadership now, and I now I know Shannon is learning from his mistakes with the Lovett and Whipple hires and by the Marve and B.B. situation.
CVS I disagree with you about how he handled the Marve situation. I think he handled it perfectly. BUT that is just my opinion....

BTW, 86, I agree about the biggest single game outcoaching job being App. State over Mich, but this wasn't for a championship.
On another note, how about Howie's coaching job vs. Nebraska and Tom Osborne back in the 1984 OB? For the most part I agree with Truth on the talent issue, but there are examples of coaching coming through, and probably more so since the scholarship limitations. Now if we begin to review the NCAA hoops tnmt. we hit real paydirt for upsets and nice runs, but not for actually winning it all. On that note, anyone remember who was in the final four in 1979 along with Magic/MSU and Bird/Ind. State? One was another basketball power of that era, DePaul, but the other was a total surprise? The winner will get to keep talking Canes on Canespace!

On the real side, 86 is saying something that's real. coop plays hard amd with heart, but he's no mike james or lamar miller, hell, he's not even a healthy javaris james. lee chambers will get some shine this year too. But coop, he's about as good as he's going to be, he just doesn't have the power in his legs to be that rugged back, he has good speed though and good feet. The only way he stays on the field alot this year is if he elevates his game to another level. damyum, where is soldinger when you need em. Would be good if soldinger could somehow coach the runningbacks in the 7 on 7 drills.
tommie robinson and mcgriff, we need to see something from yall units this year.

I think another thing some guys are missing is nobody's gonna sit on the bench with Whipple's offense.
You are gonna see more groups of players and packages running in and out of the game... yes and causing penalties sometimes.. than you have seen before.
Not starting isn't gonna be a big deal, not getting in the game, with Whipple thats another thing.
Mike James might be the guy that stays in there with Jacory the most but everybody is gonna have to know what's going on and where they are supposed to be.

Greeson: Brown likely one of SEC's new Fab 4
Recruits hear it. Programs sell it. Fans love it.
And coaches understandably hope to avoid it at all costs.
Meet the impact newcomer, college football's current big thing. Or its next biggest disappointment.
There's little wiggle room for those anointed with such lavish preceding praise. For every Andre Smith and Darren McFadden, there are matching stories of James Banks and Tray Blackmon.
Five stars from a recruiting service can be four years of three-and-outs for those too burdened by being the "One."
But when they hit, when those precious five recruiting stars align, they can affect almost every aspect of a program.
Alabama's Julio Jones and Georgia's A.J. Green -- the dynamite receivers who took the SEC by storm as true freshmen last year -- did it. Eric Berry, UT's wonderful defensive back who should be on the short list of this year's Heisman Trophy candidates, did it the previous fall.
It's a trend not likely to change any time soon. With players able to declare for the NFL draft after three years on campus, superstar recruits will see a red shirt only if they are injured or that happens to be the color of the no-contact practice jersey.
You think Georgia coach Mark Richt would elect to redshirt Knowshon Moreno again if Richt knew that year of preparation was going to cost the Bulldogs a season of Moreno's production?
No, the next wave of stars is going to be today's wave of stars before the end of the year. That's a certainty.
What remains a mystery is which of the SEC newcomers will blossom sooner than the rest. Less than 80 days from the start of the season, here's a guess:
* Bryce Brown, Tennessee: The nation's top-ranked overall prospect by several services and the top-ranked running back by everyone with a stopwatch and a pencil, Brown's late decision to be a Volunteer is the high-water mark in Lane Kiffin's short time in Knoxville.
Yes, Montario Hardesty figures to be the starter at the dawn of the season, but Brown's big-play ability could be critical for a Vols offense starving for it. Brown will get a lot of early looks, and if he can pick up a few of the blocking assignments that normally slow a running back's transition to the college game, he will be hard to keep off the field.
* Russell Shepard, LSU: His quarterback numbers as a senior at Cypress Ridge High in Houston were staggering. Shepard ran for more than 1,900 yards and 28 touchdowns and passed for better than 1,800 yards and 20 scores.
Jordan Jefferson secured the starting job at the end of last season and was outstanding in the Tigers' impressive bowl rout of Georgia Tech. That said, Shepard graduated early from high school and was among five LSU players tabbed most improved in spring practice. He attempted 12 passes in the spring game -- two fewer than Jefferson -- completing seven for 70 yards.
* DJ Fluker, Alabama: The massive offensive lineman moved his way toward the front of the recruiting rankings by dominating the all-star games he attended. He's a freak -- at 6-foot-7 and 350 pounds, he was timed at 4.9 seconds in the 40-yard dash -- and there is a rather large opening in Tuscaloosa for a talented tackle after Smith left for the NFL.
The transition from facing high school defensive linemen to facing SEC defensive linemen is arguably the most difficult, but if anyone is up to that huge challenge it's Fluker.
* Eltoro Freeman, Auburn: After spending a year playing at a junior college and another season redshirting there, Freeman will be a sophomore this fall. He will be a much-welcomed addition for the Tigers.
Freeman almost immediately moved into the starting lineup, taking the top spot at weakside linebacker after spring practice, and his passion and pursuit earned raves.
About the only bad thing about Freeman for Auburn fans is that his stay could be short: He's eligible for the draft after the season.
That, and of course he's not a quarterback.

ACC Football Commitment Lists: Coastal Division, July 1
After an extensive recruitment update for the Atlantic Division schools on Tuesday, the Coastal Division simply couldn’t keep pace.
Not that a few coaches didn’t try.
The big puller of the week came out of Coral Gables, as Randy Shannon and his staff added two linebackers in Kevin Nelson and Javarie Johnson. Nelson in particular, seemed like a huge gain based off where his high school is. Although he’s unranked by Rivals.com, one of his scholarship offers was from Florida. As a resident of Gainesville, Nelson would appear like a lock for Florida. Well, not anymore.
Much further north, David Cutcliffe continues his remarkable recruiting season. He added running back Juwan Thompson and defensive back Quantrez Stevenson. Stevenson is known for his blazing speed after he was recently timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.28 seconds.
Virginia Tech kept a steady pace as always - adding its tenth recruit for the 2010 class in offensive lineman Matt Arkema. The Hokies’ rival, Virginia, also saw its commitment number rise. This time the Cavaliers added defensive back Pablo Alvarez.
Speaking of UVa, four of its recruits increased their star ratings according to Scout.com. Those individuals were Ryan Cobb, Kyrrel Latimer, Kevin Parks Jr. and E.J. Scott, who all went from unranked to two stars.
The only other player to see a bump in his star rating was the Blue Devils’ Darius Lipford. He also went from no stars to a two-star rating.
With all that being said, let’s get on to the lists…
Key: • ^ The first star number is from Rivals.com. The second one is from Scout.com.
A # sign = A 2009 commit who didn’t qualify academically but still plans to attend original school.

That makes me laugh about recruiting... James jo boy from Indiana of the city of Plainfield or w/e is a 5 star lineman???
I'm not saying the kid isn't good, or doesn't have great potential but seriously when do you ever get into a conversation and go, wow those kids from Indiana are the best at football. That comp out there is amazing. James is going up against some of the fastest and most athletic DE's in the country so he earned it... You know. I mean I understand there are camps, but that stuff is all mostly without pads and it is not the real thing. So then film, again this is film against who? How can you justify that this kid is better than our OL recruits?

whipple can design all the plays he wants, but if the older players dont't get it done it won't matter. we know the young guys can get it done, but we need the seniors to step it up. one guy who i think will have a great year is sharpton. he has always been a good player and now i think he is going to take it to the next level. he looked good in the spring and should look even better when McCarthey plays beside him.

How do we know the young guys can get it done?
At 7-6 there wasn't a whole lot gettin done...
Posted by: The Truth | July 02, 2009 at 12:24 AM
all of the big plays were made by the underclassmen.
-jacory rescues us from virginia and duke
-aldarius leads the team in catches and yards
-marcus robinson dominated virginia tech's o-line
-collier made big catches all season
- sean spence (do i have to say anymore)
my point is we know the underclassmen can get it done. yea record wise it might not look like it, but look at it this way. the freshmen played prominent roles on the team and only two out of the thirteen games we played did we not really have a chance to win. those were florida and georgia tech. most of these kids have probably never seen the option before, so we were probably going to lose anyway regardless of preparation.
unc- shouldn't have loss that game
nc state- they are not a better team than we are. they might have a better coach, but like you always say, the more talented team wins more often than not.
cal- could've won this game had the defense stepped up. jahvid best had the game of his life and we still had a chance to win it at the end of the game.
the young guys can get it done, we all know that.

Windy
Spence was virtually invisible for the last 4-5 games of the year. For all of Robbinsons pash rush ability as a starter he was absolutely ABUSED at the point of attack in almost every game when teams ran the ball. AJ did lead the team in receptions but I don't remember any of those receptions being anything of major importance - ala 47 @UVA - in any game Miami needed that "big" catch. Collier was nicked so I'll reserve judgement and mostly cuz I like Soiler and that's his boy. Finally, Jacory for all his upside, wasn't exactly the most consistent kid under center either. He dissapeared to in many a game - then again he was a freshman. It happens.
When I think of players "getting it done" that means they're winning games.
ALL of those young guys were in a position to win and carry the team. They were the ones counted on...I know this. But Miami WAS 7-6 last year.
That's not getting it done.
So, we'll agree to dissagree on whether we KNOW the young guys can get it done.
When I see it. I'll believe it. ALL of them need to be ALOT better before I'll say they're getting it done.
