As the Autumn sun was slowly fading beyond the western horizon, the highly charged orange and green clad fans excitedly filed into Land Shark Stadium on Saturday night. While there was electricity in the air there were no clouds in the sky to obscure the beautiful harvest moon that rose above The Shark on this warm October evening as the Miami Hurricanes prepared to battle the Oklahoma Sooners in what would turn out to be another epic battle between two of college football's elite programs.
After suffering through a rain ruined game in Blacksburg against Virginia Tech just week ago, Miami fans were relieved to see no rain in sight in sunny South Florida for the big showdown with the Sooners. In the end the Hurricanes would celebrate a victory as they made a loud and clear statement to the NCAA, the media and their fans that they are indeed back by hanging on to beat #8 ranked Oklahoma 21-20 in a 60 minute slug fest.
For those who attended or watched the game on TV the fact that it not as close as it sounded was obvious. If not for some very questionable officiating that resulted in big plays for Oklahoma and two first quarter turnovers by UM QB Jacory Harris the game would probably not have even been close.
Jacory would come back from his early mistakes and lead Miami to their biggest victory in many years in front of 61,000 screaming maniacs. Jacory enjoyed the return of of the Hurricanes' best WR in Aldarius Johnson and connected with him for a few key first downs. UM TE Jimmy Graham had his second TD of the season in the second quarter and has quickly become a fan favorite for his effort and hustle.
Yet it may have been the almost forgotten Javaris James, who possibly had his biggest and best game for Miami, that led the Canes to victory. James had 150 yards on 15 carries as he banged and bulled the Sooners defense into submission. JJ apparently saved his best for last as he was particularly effective in the fourth quarter and on the last drive that sealed Oklahoma's fate.
The Hurricane defense outplayed and out-shined the highly rated Oklahoma as UM Defensive Coordinator John Lovett developed an excellent game plan for the Sam Bradford less Sooners. Allen Bailey, Sean Spence, Colin McCarthy and Brandon Harris all had big games for Miami.
Even more exciting was the aggressive play of freshman S Ray Ray Armstrong who made his presence known early and often by landing several crushing hits. It was good to see #26 live up to his hype and play eerily similar to another #26 he has been compared to in former UM safety Sean Taylor.
In this statement game Miami proved that they can compete once again at the highest levels of college football. For the rest of the NCAA teams this game was clearly: message sent, message received.

Great article - it was great to see that game last night. I absolutely agree that the game wasn't as close as the final score. The VT game was an aberration (though possibly a quite costly one) but we showed that we ARE the team that beat fsu and gt and dare I say, the hype is warranted. Great to see Ray Ray bringing the wood, Sean Spence had a great game, as did Glue Hands, C-Mac, Joe Joseph (that was a BULLSHIT flag on the punt), T Benjamin and B Harris.
What an umbelievable and incredibly welcome change it is to have an OC that can recognize and implement the changes necessary when something isn't working. Thank You Mark Whipple - please get comfortable in SoFla.
Anyway - lots of random thoughts here and some probably not completed, but I'm still hyped from that game and am looking forward to the rest of this season. I can't wait for us to go to Chapel Hill and lay the smack on those baby blue heels after we get our backups some reps against FAMU next weekend.
I'm out... GO CANES!!!

Good meeting you again last night. I needed that pep talk beofre the game cause I was very nervous about how they would respond after losing to Va. Tech.
Posted by: Rashad | October 04, 2009 at 07:52 PM
Awesome, awesome victory and effort by the Canes. Those guys showed a lot poise and moxy out there being down by 10. They bowed their neck and just like on the movie 300 when they were being pushed back into the hot gates, they dug their feet into the ground and halted OU's attack. I love the fight in these guys, they look in the face of adversity and smile and keep fighting. You know where they get that from, the head man Randy Shannon himself. The players are a reflection of their head coach, they take on his personality and you can some times hear Shannon speaking through them in interviews. But its not just Randy, its the guys he's surrounded himself with as well. You're only as good as the help you have around you and he's done a great job of surrounding himself with a great staff thats as of right now getting the job done. One of the things I saw in the game this week as opposed to last game is the time we had on the clock to get plays in and the proper checks were made at the line of scrimmage. There really wasnt many times were they had to rush out of the huddle and get the ball off. Thats just great coaching and a testament to players and staff with being efficient. Now its on to FAMU and one thing I loved when reading all the articles was this quote...
"We can't let the Oklahoma victory beat us next week," James warned. "We have to keep pushing." ---J. James
Thats a great statement right there, its starting to get to the point where winning is expected and kinda like that song "Throw in the bag" and we're on to the next one. The thing about college football is anyone can be beaten at anytime especially if you go into the game with the wrong mind set. Everyones talking about the Canes are gonna be favored more than likely throughout the season, which is an accurate statement in the way they've been playing against top ranked opponents. BUT its all about how they approach each week with that chip on their shoulder, its four games and theres a lot more to go, long season and they aint done yet. Like I said before on here forget about everyone one else Canes b/c they've written you off before and dont think it wont happen the minute you lose again, just worry about giving it everything you've got for the man beside you and let us marvel at the masterpiece when its all said and done. GO CANES!!!!!!!!

anybody notice the flip flop by sport casters talking about the Sooner's defense and the canes...
As the game got going the casters were all talking about the Sooner's defense was number one in the country and after 2 interceptions they were all over how good the Sooners were... Then when Miami scored and then later went ahead, they started hinting that the Sooners defense was banged up... by the end of the game, they were falling all over themselves trying to say that Oklahoma wasn't the same team, but not noting that Okee's #1 defense status just got punk-ed!!
The reason why Oklahoma is so damn good on defense is that they specialize on cheap shots to win and then walk over teams!...
The Ref's... Someone or organization should show the highlights... so many things not called that were in the direct view or right behinde or in front of the ball carrying player... the officials should have seen it!!! cheap shots, cutbacks, holding, placement of ball for a first down, roughing the kicker...on and on and where is the replay?... just plain BS!!!
Posted by: Cat 5 Cane | October 04, 2009 at 07:56 PM
Poor guys. Not only did they back a losing team, they probably live in Oklahoma. Hope they have a shocker to keep themselves occupied.
Perhaps a little Three Dog Night will help give them the proper perspective. "Never Been to Spain" repeated over and over should do the trick.

Great game, although I was forced to watch in pieces at the hotel bar and by way of text updates while attending a wedding reception. Good thing I wasn't hungry and my wife was able to cover for me when the photographer came by to get table shots....
Ray Ray is going to be a piece of work before his UM career is done. This team did a great job of not giving up after starting with two INTs and a bunch of mistakes.

Saturday arrived at LandShark @5:45 WE Spent 1 hour looking for anyone wearing a canespace shirt in any of the rows of roudy people in W22 we finally gave up and just did some serious girl watching outside the "F" gate. At 7 we went to our seats. I found it very hard climbing the steps to row 26 section 431(arthritis) But thouroughly enjoyed the energy, passion, and music (???)associated with a live game, I had almost forgoyyen what it was like. And besides all that it was a fabulous game.

That was one of the greatest nights of my life 86 walking out of that stadium. That was electric. GO CANES...Anyway word what happened to Sam Shields at the end of the game? Did he pull himself out or did the coach's make the decision to put in Ryan Hill? I know the kid is trying hard and playing at a different position but we have to come up with other options and I agree 86 that Brandan needs to get some burn.
GO CANES...

Solar, those ranking are more or less accurate but USF should be higher and Cinci, Boisie and someone else in the top ten should be lower.
USF could easily beat Cinci. I'd love for us to get Boisie and stomp a mudhole in their azzes. That would be beautiful.
Although....USC, ND and a few others are right in line.
UF should stomp LSU unless T-Bone doesn't play. They're weak this year, scraping by every game. That offense can't score enough to keep pace.
TX is playing strong. It will be very, very interesting to see how they play against OU.

They were big 12 officials. I don't know what you saw. I didn't see that. I watched the game again on the DVR and they announced the crew as big12. I haven't confirmed it from the AD but if Musburger and Herbie said it?
Really, I don't care if they were NFL officials, they were as bad as I've seen. Some of the calls and more importantly, non calls, were highly questionable.

We won...we fouth through it.... It happens right? Rain was the adversity last week. We didn't fight through it and lost. This is a sign of a team growing up. Good Post Rashad on top DB's. Keep Sam on special teams he can thrive there and helps us out.

They were Big 12 officials and they stunk just like the one's in the Ravens game today, no excuses but the ref's were shameful. Watching the game again right now.

It looked deliberate and stunningly open to me. The absolute worst I've ever seen.
Posted by: pb(CSROH10) | October 04, 2009 at 09:01 PM
pb...TOTALLY agree. Especially the block in the back on OU that was NOT called. It was blatantly obvious and the ref was right there.

LOL..Im sticking with Hankerson/Spence, but Nelms was flyin around out there..LOL I just wanna see them come out and put up 21 quick ones on FAMU next week, and get the reserves some extra playing time.

Monty...good to see U around the blbo again. When U coming to South Florida for a game?
I can hook U up dude, as OceanState and his posse, they had a BLAST!

The refs were pathetic, they, along with the turnovers and missed tackles, kept the game much closer than it should have been.
The freaking rain is going to decide who goes to the ACC title game from the coastal division, it's making me sick just thinking about and I can't see two ACC loses for the Chokies this year, sorry, just can't.

The roughing the punter call was as bad as I've seen in a long time. Joseph never hit him at all, the punter's punting foot tapped Joseph on the way back down. It was an iffy call at best, although the type that often will lead to a running into the punter call. Roughing? Gotta be kidding me, especially at that point of the game. FWIW, a running into wouldn't have given OU a first down at that stage either. Couldn't have anything to do with why it might have been called though, huh? Yeah, I'm paranoid.

86 I'm about to book my room for the Clemson game. What do I need to do to get the rates discount. Can I book online?

Here we go again. Blaming the rain. Does it ever stop? What a joke? LOL

"Randy Shannon is going to be our head coach for a long, long time," Hocutt said.
And Ray Ray may blow a coverage in the passing game...But he is going to make a lot of tackles. What is worse one blown coverage or 15 missed tackles with team running down our throats???!!! I will take my chances with Ray Ray blowing someone up and making tackles! Did you see Demarco try to get down towards the end of the game....He saw #26 coming at him!

OGV:
You never know what to expect with the ACC. The Hokies barely got by Duke, and the same UVA team that lost to William and Mary beat UNC while the same Maryland squad that lost to Middle Tenn. State and barely beat James Madison beat Clemson. That being said, all I care about is what UM does. If they can run the table and end up not winning the Coastal, it would still be an amazing season, a high rating, a strong shot for an at-large bid, and a good lesson for a young group of players going into future seasons about how important it is to stay focused every week for every game!
Posted by: JCane | October 04, 2009 at 09:19 PM
Yes the Joe Joseph play was a bad call, but he should have never been there. That one P.I. was very bad and the missed block in the back, but hey, the Canes still won, so screw the refs!! haha

One less loney samitch last week and Collier makes the catch of the year, dayum that was close!!
Agreed...
100 percent effort... The attempt made to catch that ball was off the chain...
One thing for sure... If Collier is close, he's deadly and I rank him up there with the best we have. The great problem we have, is that we have so many of them!!!
Lion's Tiger's and Bear's...Oh My!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Here's a tough question... if you take height out of the equasion... name the best receivers in order and I bet Collier is in the top 5
benji
AJ
collier
byrd
hankerson
epps
t streeter
d johnson
k thompkins

OGV,
Miami plays in the wackiest conference that has a BCS automatic bid. ANYTHING can happen.
UM better be ready to play the rest of their games. They come out flat one week, we could get snakebit by a lesser team. It's happened before in this conference.

Randy outcoached Stoops and is becoming a very good coach...
He is a great recruiter...
He hired two great coaches Mark Whipple and John Lovett...
He is a disciplinarian and good human being...
He is making better and better decisions...
He will probably have to find a better coach for special teams at the end of the season...But overall he has a very good coaching staff...Still unacceptable not to have a very good back up QB like Florida, OU and USC...
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | October 04, 2009 at 09:30 PM
They were Big 12 officials
and fir that it DOES matter. They were blatant.

mm01 I agree. The clemson game scares me for some reason. With the way this team tackles sometimes and with them Having CJ Spiller If the team isn't focused it could be a tricky game. It's good that Clemson's offense sucks outside of Spiller though

The answer I read... I think from Manny's, was that he was made a verbal (open gesture) type contract with modest increase and time limit and he said, "Lets table this till the end of the year"... If memory serves me.
I'm thinking he knew what he had and was sand bagging for a knock-out contract!... and you say,... but, but that doesn't sound like the mild mannered man we think he is.
Laughing out loud... and I say... Remember he was a linebacker first! LOL

I agree the calls in the game were bad but I am proud of them. Joe Joseph should have got running into the kicker not roughing? But Joe Joseph was so stupid for that play. Beason yelled at him on the sidelines. It was to funny.
Posted by: Caneslegend | October 04, 2009 at 09:38 PM
Calls were bad, I notice a lot of bad spots and calls in game. Usually the team behind in the game gets the bad calls in their favor. Telling you the establishment wants to keep the t v audience watching.
The worst officails are in fact the ones that try to get the win for the conference that the officials represent its a fact the refs. have a vested interest in wanting their conference to win. Seen all the time, a differnt examepe is, like if USC might to to nc the refs will not hardly let the other team win even within the conference, been mentioned a lot, its just a fact. Human nature hard to change.
