It's All About The U

“It’s a ‘U’ thing, you wouldn’t understand.”

 

To outsiders, this is just a cocky slogan for a t-shirt.  However, for those of us who have followed this program through thick and thin, through its highs and lows, who would gladly walk through fire for a sixth national championship ring, it means so much more than that.  It’s about the “U Family” – what makes the University of Miami so special and so different than every other football program in the nation.

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at ESPN’s world-premier screening of “The U,” I had an opportunity to be reunited with my old “U Family,” including Ben Leis, President of the Palm Beach ‘Canes Club, Don Bailey, Jr., who is like the fun uncle you immediately seek out at a family reunion to hear some good jokes, and Palm Beach county’s own, Lamar Thomas, who is like, well, I don’t know if anyone is quite like Lamar, so I’ll just leave it at that. 

Amongst the crowd, I saw members of the family who I had only seen in pictures or on television:  Melvin Bratton, Tolbert Bain, and Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, amongst others.  I had a warm feeling in my heart before the film even rolled, because I knew I was with people who shared the same passion as me, people who are all about “this ‘U.’”

 

Once the film rolled and I stopped dancing to Uncle Luke’s title track, I was taken on an emotional journey through the origins, rise, highs and lows of our beloved football team.  I promise you, ‘Canes fans, this film will take you through a range of emotions including excitement, hope, elation, disgust, embarrassment, humility, and ultimately, pride. 

 

I didn’t think I could have more love and pride for our ‘Canes before Wednesday night:  I was so wrong.  Hearing the voices that shaped history and the humanity behind the headlines made my heart beat more orange and green blood through my veins and made me want to punch my chest with pride like I was Kellen Winslow II.  

 

I don’t want to spoil the movie for you, but here are some highlights to look forward to Saturday night at 9pm on ESPN, immediately following the Heisman Trophy presentation:

 

• “The U,” much like Billy Corben and Rakontur’s previous films, takes painstaking measure to reflect the historical environment in Miami that set the backdrop for, and greatly contributed to, the ‘Canes success.  The players themselves talk about the differences in their backgrounds compared to Coral Gables with amusing, but real, antidotes.

• The portrayal of Howard Schnellenberger was heart-wrenching.  The emotion with which he spoke about my alma mater was so moving, it brought tears to my eyes.  After feeling the same excitement as if I was watching the 1983 National Championship game live, the film made you feel like you were dropped off a 50 story building when he left the U. 

• The stories from Jimmy Johnson and the players in those years are downright hilarious.  You WILL laugh out loud over, and over, and over again.  One of my favorite parts of the movie was the scene we’ve all heard about starring Melvin Bratton and Alonzo Highsmith calling “The Boz” the morning before the Oklahoma game (with some cleaned-up language for television).  The intensity still in their voices will give you goosebumps, and the following scene on the field with the coin toss will make you want to growl with anticipation for the Hurricanes' dominance.

• The portrayal of Dennis Erickson was pretty sympathetic, comparing him to a substitute teacher.  While opinions differ on his ability or desire to control the team, the antics at the Cotton Bowl make great film footage.  This, and the specific explanation of the origins of “The Miami Rule” are, by far, the most hilarious moments of the film, although some of the more embarrassing parts of our history. 

• The players, in particular Don Bailey, Jr., Lamar Thomas, Steve Walsh, Melvin Bratton, and Michael Irvin deliver hilarious one-liners.  My favorite interviewee, however, was Uncle Luke.  The portion of the film that discussed how much money these players, such as Bennie Blades, brought to the U, yet were unable to buy food on the weekend and diapers for their children, really brought out the humanity behind the notorious “Thug U” image.

• You all will enjoy the disdain with which our former players still describe rivals such as Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Florida State, and even that school near Ocala, Florida who could never really be a true rival because it was too afraid to keep us on its schedule.  The reaction to the “Seminole Rap” made me cheer and clap like I was at the 31-0 beat down – although I was in the 2nd grade at the time.

There are more highlights to mention, but I’m not going to write you a thesis on the subject - you’ll see on Saturday night.  Besides, who cares what I think?  Let me tell you what the Lamarkable LT #36 had to say:

 

• Regarding the content of “The U”:  “I thought it was accurate . . . about the Hurricanes and the era.  People know of the ‘Canes but they don’t know the ‘Canes.  It was accurate.  It was a different time.”
• On whether the ‘Canes will ever see a time like the 80s-90s again:  “That time can’t come back as far as the behavior of the student athletes.  Rules are different and the times are different.  The winning tradition can come back, though.  I think we are on the cusp of that happening.”
• On what was left out of the film: Billy Corben told Lamar there would have been more clips of him if his editors could stop laughing at everything he said.  Pay special attention to Lamar’s quote regarding his concerns during the national championship against Nebraska.  “During half time, that’s what we were talking about . . . that’s how little respect we had for Nebraska.  We knew we were gonna win.”
• On The Coaches: Lamar discussed Coaches Dennis Erickson and Larry Coker who he described as “two of the nicest guys” and “favorite coaches” who were “given the keys to a Porsche and told not to crash it.”

Although many parts of the film are a joyous Hurricanes highlights reel, you might see a few things that make you angry, as well.  The film’s inclusion of a clip about Randy Shannon made my blood boil (keep in mind this is coming from the same girl who kicked a date out of her house for questioning Randy’s integrity).  Regarding this clip, Lamar remarked that he had the same problem with the film and spoke to Billy Corben about it after the premier. 

 

About Randy, Lamar said “After everything he’s done for the program . . . it should have been explained.  [The film] put a guy working so hard to clean things up on the defense.  He was just a GA at the time.”

Further, I did not like the ending – at all – because there was so much more story to tell.  I know there are time constraints and perhaps not everyone wants to sit through another 3 hours of ‘Canes football history.  It is what it is, however, the footage shown during the ending – the destruction of the Orange Bowl – not only made me want to vomit, it was historically inaccurate to the time period discussed on the voice-over. 

The abrupt ending of the film makes “The U” ripe for a good sequel, which I hope they make after our boys get the 6th ring.  LT #36 agreed, stating they were “building it up for a sequel” and creating “two phases” of Hurricane football.

 

Overall, I think fellow Miami Hurricane Billy Corben did a spectacular job and delivered a moving portrayal of the team we love.  I had no doubt he would – it’s a “U” thing.

Billy Corben excerpts from Sept 6th interview from our friends a the 7th Floor blog. Sounds like we all need to wait for the juicer director's cut coming in 2010 for our collections:

"You must have come across a lot of archival goodness and juicy story-telling in your research for "The U." Is there something that you couldn't include because of time or story that you wish could make the cut? How much, if at all, did ESPN make you sanitize the final cut of "The U?" Don't lie.

I am literally typing the answers to these questions with one hand and editing with the other, so the situation is fluid right now. Ask me again in a couple months. The biggest challenge in terms of cuts right now is the running time. Trying to pack this epic story of the 'Canes, 1979-1992, 4 national championships, 3 different head coaches, dozens of games, hundreds of players, into 95 minutes is a real challenge. And some great material is going to have to be sacrificed. But....

Follow up question... what is the expected release date for the Unrated & Uncut version of "The U," and can we place go ahead and place our pre-orders now?

I'm hoping to put a "director's cut" together for 2010. Schedule and ESPN permitting.

Maurice Hagens... U Fullback commit out of Tampa... why haven't I heard about this kid?

ESPN Evaluation: Tough to tackle because of strength and powerful legs. Leaves would-be tacklers in the dust who try to tackle him low and runs over those who attempt to make chest up tackles. Uses the old school stiff arms at times and would just as soon run over the defender as avoid them. Not unusual to see him drag opponents downfield. Hagens is a powerful locomotive in cleats that will be a very productive fullback if he is in the right system. He is a real competitor who is fun to watch.

solar, you gotta luv how shannon comes off as the quiet type, but was always raising hell back in the day. Go to sleep in a meeting you waking up with a bunch of toothpase or shaving cream in your face, courtesy of shannon. Big phat azz cortez kennedy, only one thing between him and the refridgerator, randy "take yo azz back to sleep" shannon, lol. And now that it's comign out that the only thng shannon was responsible for was holding the money, that mof shannon been DEBO a long time.

Makes me prouder and prouder by the day that shannon is the headcoach. He was one of them people that knew how not to get caught and d id the right thing for the most part but brought it every time. It was funny watching shannon on the sidelines during the Fsu game where barrow crushed van "it's" over. This team is starting to take on the mentality of shannon, and it showed up against usf, that's the main thing i was looking to see.

What people don't understand about shannon is this, cav keeps bringing it up(BOSSES & HAWGS), the real part about that, if you seem like you're a sucka azz nephew, you basically not coming on the team. They looking for real dudes on the mental, Miami style, that's all shannon knows, and shannon know alot of people, it was a real elarning lesson for shalala when all she kept hearing was how alot of players were afraid of shannon back in the day, lol.

The confidence is already back, the play-making is on the way back on a regular come next year, these guys are on a mission.

Also, solar, that guy you posted his comments about SEAN TAYLOR, he said that real well. I use to tell people, SEAN TAYLOR was one of the best players i ever seen come thru UM, only a few i can put in his category, and i mean a few, we can start with JEROME BROWN, irvin, frank gore(pre-injuries), warren sapp, i didn't mention reed but what's surprising to me is that he started that many games, him and fox are tied for starts.

jsq, i tell you what, it's real good to see the current players mingle with some of the UM football finest from back in the day. These guys will get schooled and drilled on what UM football is this whole week. That's the best thing about Miami, these mofo's just made their own get together, this movie is not about what people like or don't like, it's just a celebration of our own greatness by our own, for those who did it, and for those who wintesses!

Yea that guy is a real Georgia fan born and raised and goes to all their home games, but his favorite player he ever watched was Sean Taylor college and pro.
Another Georgia fan I worked with favorite college football player is Ken Dorsey.
You can tell lots of fans of other teams are closet Cane fans, just by the respect in their voices about our players.

I'd love to see the text messages from all the former Canes to each other after the film airs.
Shannon is in a funny spot.
He played with the hell raisers that changed the rules, now he is the Coach that is admired for having his players play by the rules.

In the three games Miami lost in 2009 they allowed more than 30 points in each. VT had 31, Clemosn 40 and UNC 33.

Miami only scored 7 points aginst VT and was never in the game.

Miami scored 24 against UNC and that should have been enough with UNC's pathetic offense but too many turnovers (4 INTs/2 for TDs) ruined the day.

Miami scored 37 against Clemson and it was only the second time since 1985 that UM had lost when scored 34 points or more (136 wins against only 2 losses). The KO return for as TD by Spiller and the INT for a TD thrown by J12 were the difference in that game.

So really when U look at it, Miami was 6 plays away (5 INTs and KO return) from an ACC championship, top 5 ranking and a BCS bowl game.

Things that make U go Hmmmmmmmm...

I think this is one of the best bowls for us, we know that we couldn’t win up in the Orange Bowl and we feel that the Champs Sports Bowl is the next best bowl for us and our fan base. We drew a big crowd when we played Central Florida, we drew a big crowd when we played South Florida and when we played in Tallahassee against Florida State we had a great crowd there. Thanks. I read a couple of other reviews before I wrote it and didn't think they conveyed what it was like to be there. For me, attending that premier will be a story I will tell when I am an old biddy going to 'Canes games with my orange and green walker. I will never forget it and I think most people on here would feel the same so I wanted you guys to know what it was like.

Although I had a couple of negative things to say about the film, it really is about 1 minute total of stuff I didn't like compared to stuff I completely 100% LOVED.

I really think y'all are going to enjoy the movie so much. I can't wait to hear what y'all think!!!

I'll let that slide since without you and your persistent e-mails, I would have had to leave Ben and Erika at home and would probably be 2 friends shorter right now. Thanks again, 86, for making it so we all could go. It was great to look over at my buds during certain moments of the movie, as well as have them laugh at me for already knowing all the words to the theme song (doesn't EVERYBODY listen to it all day at work on repeat?!) and being able to slap high fives after the 'Canes made a great touchdown . . . that we already knew they were going to make! Such a wonderful experience.

"The U" premier. I can just hear them now:

But yeah, Mars needs to get their act together.

There's a story on SI.com that Kelly showed up at the team banquet tonight to tell the kid's he wasn't going to coach them in the Sugar Bowl. The kid's listened for one minute and then walked out on him.

Second, I talked about Maurice Hagens since the beginning of this high school football year ... you must've missed it ... all of it ... every time

I was at the game where they upset Plant High, at Plant, on the sidelines of Tampa Bay Tech.

I talked to Maurice & some of their team when they were down 24 points with 19 minutes left to play. As I was walking past them on the bench, I told them about how Plant was on the other sidelines saying how beaten & crushed they looked .. how Coach Weiner for Plant was yelling at his kids that they've crushed Tech's spirit .. how there is still time to come back .. to not give up ..

Hagens ran for 152 yards and 1 TD that game - all while his legs/calves were cramping up
