From www.hurricanesports.com:
The 12th-ranked University of Miami baseball team will hold its fourth annual Hurricanes Baseball FanFest on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
The event, which is free to the public and scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., is headlined by a home run derby featuring former `Canes Ryan Braun and Yonder Alonso, against current student-athletes Yasmani Grandal and Ryan Perry.
An autograph session with the 2010 Hurricanes will kick off the event at approximately 3:45 p.m., while a season ticket holder batting practice is slated for 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. After a home run challenge involving a lucky fan at about 5:20 p.m., Braun - an All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers - and Alonso - a top prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization - will battle preseason All-America catcher Grandal and teammate Perry in a four-man home run derby at 5:35 p.m.
The event will culminate with the most anticipated alumni game in program history, as numerous former `Canes are expected to return to play against the 2010 squad. In addition to Braun and Alonso, Cesar Carrillo, Jon Jay, Chris Perez, Carlos Gutierrez and Kyle Bellamy are just a few of the names expected to play in the game which is slated to start at 6:20 p.m.
In addition to the FanFest and alumni game, the weekend will also feature the team's preseason banquet on Friday, Feb. 12 at the Marriott Miami Biscayne Bay on 1633 N. Bayshore Drive in downtown Miami and the team's golf tournament at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Coral Gables on Monday. In addition to participating in the events on Saturday, Braun will also be the guest speaker at the banquet Friday night.
Fans who have yet to purchase season tickets for the 2010 season or season ticket holders who would like to relocate their seats will have an opportunity to do so during a Select-A-Seat event throughout the FanFest. Available seats will be tagged and once seats are selected, fans can checkout at the stadium's box office at the front entrance to the park.
Fans can enjoy several interactive areas throughout the park at Saturday's FanFest, including our slide & t-ball inflatables, pony rides, face painting, balloon art, caricature artist, home run challenge, home run derby and more.
For more information on the FanFest or to order tickets for the 2010 season, call 1-800-GO-CANES or visit www.hurricanesports.com. For more information on the banquet and golf tournament, call 305-284-4171.
BREAKING NEWS FROM MANNY NAVARRO:
"I called one of my sources at the U just now. Barrow isn't going anywhere. He's been given his old job as linebackers coach back. He isn't unhappy. Barrow was moved to defensive assistant (line/secondary) coach to prepare him to become a defensive coordinator one day. He's been given linebackers coach back because the plan was for him to do that for just one year. As far as I know, his relationship with Randy and company is fine."

What's up people? Just stopping by to say hello and let you know I'm getting ready to bounce on the Marlins beat. I'll be around for a few spring practices and the spring game, but very busy with baseball the next few months. Just the way the job is.
Posted by: Manny Navarro | February 11, 2010 at 11:43 PM
Manny...I posted your Barrow comment and the link to your blog. What's up with MLB at UM?
Posted by: SOUP | February 11, 2010 at 11:46 PM
I still expect Colin McCarthy to be the guy come the fall. I know what was reported by the Palm Beach Post, but the Canes always rotate their linebackers any way. The fact Colin hasn't taken any snaps there in a game, he has to take some this spring. I'm interested to see how Shayon Green looks. I'm told he's grown to about 6-3, 235-240 pounds and is "diesel."
Posted by: Manny Navarro | February 11, 2010 at 11:48 PM
Marlins? Josh Johnson? New ball park? How do they compete in their division?
FREE TICKETS??? LOL
Posted by: 86Cane | February 11, 2010 at 11:50 PM
Green is diesel huh? i miss the days of a big physical MLB.
my question is does he look good in terms of sideline to sideline quickness? Lord knows we don't need another Sharpton out there.

What about DVD, Brandon Harris and McGee?
Forston and Ojomo are back. Do they make a dent? What happened to MRob? We NEED better D-Line play or we are dead on defense?.

Q: My question is does he look good in terms of sideline to sideline quickness? Lord knows we don't need another Sharpton out there. Posted by: Daytoncane | February 11, 2010 at 11:52 PM
A: We'll find out this spring. Green missed all of last year with a knee injury. But it is good he's back. He's a guy Wesley McGriff absolutely loves.

A: It's time for DVD to show us he can play that's for sure. McGee has to be in the mix at corner, especially in nickel and dime situations.
I bumped into Ojomo at the Champs Sports Bowl and I can tell you the man is hungry. He's gained back most of his weight and is just dying to get on the field and deliver. I haven't seen Forston since he was bragging about the big screen TV he bought before the bowl game. But he wasn't as pudgy as he was last year. You are right 86. The d-line has to improve. But I believe they will. Too much quality talent not to be good. Rick Petri will make those guys better.

A: He hasn't been lifting because he's had the cast on. But he probably hasn't lost much weight. I'm sure he's still doing what he has to do to be ready. His dad is on his butt.

A: Mike James and Damien Berry followed by Miller. I think you'll see all three share the load. But I expect James and Berry to see most of the snaps. Miller is electric.

A: I did. Good job. It's funny, I ran into Jason and Javarris James at Drew Rosenhaus' Super Bowl party. Both gave me big hugs. I think Fox has a chance to sneak into the third round with a really good combine. Otherwise, he's a fourth through seventh guy depending on team needs.

Posted by: Daytoncane | February 12, 2010 at 12:13 AM
Manny...Check out this theory:
If Berry busts them in the chops and wears them down.
If Mike James gains yards and catches passes out of the backfield.
And then Miami Killian Cougar Lamar Miller runs right PAST them.
Who can stop us???

who is going to be That Guy that takes charge of the Defense.
Is Brandon Harris the true leader or will CMac be the guy that challenges them when the shyt hits the fan?

A: Offensive line. if Jacory doesn't have to run for his life as often as he did last year and take as many hits as he did last year, this offense becomes unstoppable. There are just too many weapons for this offense not to be generating more points. UM's offensive weapons should be separating them from everyone in the ACC. They are stacked at RB and WR. Yet, they finish fifth in the ACC in scoring? Just doesn't make sense. This is a team that should be scoring 40 points a game easy.

A: Brandon Harris has always been a vocal leader. I haven't seen a lot of that from Colin McCarthy. He kind of leads by example. But I think the fact #1 will be a junior this year, coming off an All-ACC First Team season, he won't be as shy as he was as a sophomore. He's going to be loud and proud.

A letter to Bennie Blades
------------------------------
Bennie Blades, I never knew you. But I didn't have to, to love you because you are a cane. Yes! That's how strong the cane bond is. Just like the mob, "this thing of ours!" your recent comments about boss Shanon threatens that bond, with some of us at least.
It's one thing for Corey Lemonier to not consider us because of beef with Brandon Harris & Kendal thompkins. They are kids and they will be stupid sometime. And for Florida kids, they are often aggressively stupid, not just plain stupid. But for an alumini to display the same adolescent stupidity is tough to forgive. Because you harbor some jealousy towards Shanon for being the man, out of all you ex players, you slander him without much thought. Some claim your reasoning is because of the lack of understanding that old canes have about the nature of college football today. But I say it is simple unadoltrated maliciousness, with a touch of classlessness and a hint of backwardness. I mean, when do we become men and leave the stupidity of youth behind. Sir, if you feel under achieved, then go into coaching yourself; pop warner, highschool, take your pick.
It's even worse if you consider that the guy you offend is a black man like yourself. While pursuing his passion, he's simultaneously holding the mantle for black coaches. He's the highest placed black coach in college football right now. He leads one of the top college programs in the nation. He means so much not only in Florida but he's a beacon of hope to all aspiring black coaches nationwide. I dare not suggest that he's above criticism. But what you utter is not that, it's just cheap slander...
My respect for you is in the past until you offer the boss a public apology.

Teddy Bridgewater Silent Commit?
A source class with Recruiting at Miami has said that All-Everything Teddy Bridgewater is as close to a Silent Commit for the Canes as you can get. Don't expect an early commit and Teddy will go through the recruiting process. He will take his Max 5 visits and is currently looking at the Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU, Tennessee and his Home Town team the U.
Bridgewater is to Follow Fellow Northwestern High School Quaterback to the University of Miami. Currently Teddy is a Top 5 Quarterback Prospect and brings more mobility than current Quaterback Harris. Teddy Will announce his decision on his Birthday on the 10th of November, 2010.

The main thing is that we need to continue to build depth while letting the young lineman grow. Next year could be amazing, but 2011 should be even better. TGIF.

Great comments by Manny and great questions by the spacers.
On the running backs, don't forget Pat Hill. He is going to be a key helping to bust holes for the RBs and he's like an extra lineman on passing plays. Watch replays of GT game. After he goes out, we beat the Okies but the pass protection and running game take a dip after that, IMO.
Pat Hill does all does intangible things that help an offense, and with a less experienced OL he will important.
He may not show up on the stat sheet too much but he was bringing the wood last year. He's a football player.
He's one of my LOFs. Yeah that's right.

Cx3, great mention of Pat Hill. People need to remember what a major part of our offense this guy is. He was really missed last year. Watch closely this season and you will see this guy blow up some people and some holes so our RB's can look good, he stays healthy and he will be the unsung hero of this offense.
I remember him catching a pass last year right before he got hurt and he looked so large, belly busting out and all.
Love that guy!

This is being proposed by the NCAA for 2011
If the College football world thought officials were a bit slanted toward certain teams, then imagine this happening in a bigtime game
If passed, players who draw flags for taunting gestures on their way to a touchdown would have the penalty assessed from the spot of the foul, taking away the score. Penalties that occur in the end zone would continue to be assessed on the extra-point attempt, 2-point conversion try or ensuing kickoff.

Morning crew...
LOF... Seeing that my man Brown is MIA or maybe better discribed as a deserter, then McCarthy is my logical replacement but thats too easy and obvious to lead the pack for choice of LOF.
Soup...
Before chosing LOF, can we get a written definishion and how do you choose the winner?
Is Jacory an option?
Is it based upon # of starts?
How about ACC best player weekly awards? Do they count and how many points do ya get?... Ohhh but wait, how many points will my guys Vaughn and RayRay get for an int or knocking off somebodies helmet with head still attached?... thats got to be worth 3 extra points somewhere, don't ya think?
Or maybe just the leader of stats at each position? But then what position carries more weight? A lineman, which get no sunshine or a receiver or a RB, then what about TE's or slots, ya gotta include Benji and Collier... Hummmm, I foresee a problem
Or, I got it... Just let you decide...
EIGH!!!... Sorry Hans, not this year! You broke too much glass from the last years election!
Sooo whatcha gonna do, Charlie or was that BigGuy or the other guy, 86... Man you got too many heads!

OLD news now, but still interesting:
By PETE PELEGRIN
ppelegrin@MiamiHerald.com
FIU running backs coach Mike Cassano is leaving the Golden Panthers to take the same position with the University of Miami.
Cassano, who was also the recruiting coordinator at FIU, coached the Panthers running backs for the past three seasons.
Cassano returns to UM, where he was a graduate assistant from 2005 through 2006. Cassano will be reunited with offensive coordinator Mark Whipple.
At Massachusetts, Cassano was the running backs coach for Whipple, who was the head coach. The two worked together from 1998 through 2004 and won an FCS national championship in 1998.
Last season, Golden Panthers backs rushed for 104.2 yards per game.

So the 2 coaches at UCF that broke the recruiting rules and caused the probation went on to work for Lane and Saban. Yep, thats NCAA justice at its finest

And we get pizzed off at kids for changing their mind a hundred times on what school they want to attend.
There is a ton of behind the scenes stuff that takes place that we have no idea about.
These coaches play games too.

Manny via twitter "CBS-4 confirms UM LB coach Micheal Barrow is interviewing for the co-defensive coordinator job at Florida." 10:03am
Posted by: Morehouse Cane | February 12, 2010 at 10:05 AM
Yep hes an alum from there. Hell Lane even tried to get him to come along to U$C with him as well. Why not call up Nu`Keese and have him play there as well
Posted by: Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.) | February 12, 2010 at 10:11 AM
Sooo what's good fellas?
So is barrow being interviewed or not? I'm not happy about the situation like many of you guys have said we need a mixture of good coaches good recruiters etc..... I really hope barrow doesn't really consider taken the job at that dump
I'm excited to see my boy Lamar miller just take that #2 spot on the depth chart I like mike James alot but let's be serious guys he doesn't have that exciting playmaking ability that miller showed in high school and on the scout team so let's not knock him for no playtime experience.....

Nigerian to further add to what you have written Benny Blades is in no position to criticize anyone. He is a guy who has thrown away millions by bad decisions he has made. It is fair game to criticize RS but to spit the type of shat he is spitting is just plain wrong!

Okay so Barrow's interviewing. The question becomes where's the leak and why? Is there an ulterior motive behind it or just a pair of loose lips?
Posted by: Old Skool | February 12, 2010 at 10:36 AM
I thought the Barrow rumors were squashed?
Now, I'm hearing he took the job at UF.
WTF?
Posted by: 323 Cane | February 12, 2010 at 10:44 AM
Where did you hear that he took the job?

86, thanks for the Diaz link. He's the last guy who was exciting to watch at UM. McClinton was very good, but his game wasn't exciting to watch. Diaz (his sophomore year especially) was electric.

skool great name!
I'll keep that one on the top of the list.
I took my $ 37.00 I had saved towards the OSU game and put it into the KAYAK II fund.

Isn't this what Manny said to us last night?
Barrow to coach UM's linebackers again
A few internet reports surfaced Thursday saying UM assistant Micheal Barrow had been flown up to Gainesville to be interviewed for the Gators' co-defensive coordinator job. No word yet if it really happened, or if Barrow has been offered any job with the Gators.
But as far as the Miami Hurricanes are concerned, Barrow will be coaching linebackers in Coral Gables when spring football begins Feb. 23. The Palm Beach Post's Jorge Milian first reported Thursday that Barrow, who was UM's linebackers coach in 2007 and 2008, was returning to those duties after spending last season as a defensive assistant. Defensive coordinator John Lovett, who coached the linebackers while Barrow worked with the defensive ends and special teams last year, will concentrate solely on his primary job.
I spoke to someone at UM Thursday night who told me Barrow's move last year was made in attempt for him to learn more facets of the defense, and make him a stronger candidate to become a defensive coordinator down the road. Barrow spent 13 seasons in the NFL after winning two national titles at UM in 1989 and 1991 and was the defensive coordinator at Homestead High in 2006.

Even if that is true, I expect us to probably take 2 QBs in this class.

I disagree with your assessment on Mike James. I guess you didn't watch his HS footage.
Posted by: bg1906 | February 12, 2010 at 11:25 AM
Mike James is sooooo talented. To come in as a freshman and play right away on top of that get switched to a new position, a steep learning curve in terms of blocking at FB and having the success that he has had, no way do I look past James. He has not gotten a full season to show what he can do with the ball in his hands. That said, I'm excited to see Lamar Miller in action on Saturday's.

I like Mike James but he better have a hellacious spring if he's gonna stay out there on the field all year.
Berry is, and Lamar and Storm may be just as good as James is, the last two haven't got to show case themselves with the first team.
How great is it when you have to choose who is best instead of be content with what you have??

"Kevin Nelson im eating good, im killing my self to bang you bro!! lol at this time i turned into a pyscho just because of you. you getting hit all night bro i cant wait this gone be fun pretty boi."
Green better lock that spot up in the spring because Nelson is coming. Dude has bad intentions.

None of the RB's will amount to shyte if the OL can't open up some holes for them.
That is the real question.
I think they will be much improved. I love what Gunn brings to the table when he is in there.
Just imagine if we can get the running game cranking...
Watch out!
Pat hill coming back is a big boost. Love that cannonball!
Not diggin Figs out again for spring practice. Dude needs to stay out of the training room and get some reps in.
Not worried about Bwash and OFranklin.
I think Linder takes over the center spot come the fall.
Love that idea because he will be the anchor of this OL for the next four years. Huge deal.
