Today at 2:30 PM your 12th seeded Miami Hurricanes will take on the 4th seeded Virginia Tech Hokies in a second round game of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, NC.
The game will be televised on ESPN2 and Raycom Sports Networks.
Miami advanced to the second round by absoltuely detsroying Wake Forest by 21 points 83-62. Miami led by 14 at halftime and expanded their lead to 25 points in the second half before settling for a 21 point final margin of victory.
In spite of constant criticism from UM fans (me included), "Faith in Haith" was once again restored for another day. If the Hurricanes manage to get past the Hokies today and advance to the third round UM fans will simply be giddy with pride and swelling with new found confidence in their team.
Now doesn't that sound like fun?

From www.hurricanesports.com:
Freshman running back Storm Johnson ran for 104 yards and a touchdown and sophomore safety Vaughn Telemaque intercepted two passes as the University of Miami football team completed its second scrimmage of the spring Thursday night at Lockhart Stadium. An estimated 3,000 fans were in attendance for the open practice.
Johnson carried 10 times and scored on a 6-yard touchdown run. Redshirt freshman running back Lamar Miller carried seven times for 63 yards and two touchdowns. He had a 44-yard TD run and 5-yard touchdown run in a goal-line situation to end the scrimmage. Telemaque and junior defensive end Andrew Smith led the defense. Telemaque's first interception came on the second offensive possession of the game. He added another one right before halftime.
Sophomore quarterback A.J. Highsmith completed 7-of-11 passes for 94 yards and one touchdown, but was intercepted three times. Junior Spencer Whipple went 7-for-9 for 75 yards. Sophomore Mike James had 12 carries for 18 yards and one touchdown.
The defense held the offense on the first two possessions. Telemaque intercepted his first pass on the second possession. Highsmith then led the offense on a drive that resulted in an 8-yard touchdown catch by Travis Benjamin.
Johnson ripped off his first big run on the offense's fifth possession. He rambled 52 yards for a first down to set up the offense in the red zone. A sack by Tyrone Cornelius ended that drive.
The defense stood strong on the next couple of possessions before halftime as walk-on Nathan Gholston had an interception, Micanor Regis had a tackle for a loss and Telemaque intercepted his second pass.
Whipple led the offense on its second scoring drive which was capped by Miller's 44-yard TD run right before halftime.
Miami then moved to red zone situations. After Whipple made a nice pass to Kendal Thompkins for a first down, Johnson ran six yards for a score. James and Miller each had touchdown runs to cap off the scoring as the offense started from the 3-yard line. James ran in from one yard out and Miller had the 5-yard run to end the scoring.
Aldarius Johnson led all receivers with three catches for 45 yards. He made a 26-yard grab on a pass from Highsmith which ended up leading to Highsmith's 13-yard run. Defensively, MicanorRegis, Cornelius, Adewale Ojomo and Allen Bailey each had one sack to add to Smith's three sacks.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Quick postgame thoughts on Miami 70, Virginia Tech 65:
The Miami Miracle is halfway complete. Hurricanes finished last in the league but have dispatched No. 5 seed Wake Forest and No. 4 Virginia Tech. Saturday they get a shot at stunning champion Duke.
Freshman guard Durand Scott was the hero for the Canes. He scored nine of their final 11 points and made repeated big drives to the hoop.
Virginia Tech slides back into some bubble trouble. The Hokies' strong showing in ACC play is their only selling point after doing very little in the nonconference season. Could be some anxious moments for Seth Greenberg & Co. Sunday.
The prevailing question watching Miami the past two days: How did it go 4-12 in the ACC? This is a tough, athletic bunch that guards and hits the glass -- and can hit shots as well. A mystery why the Canes struggled so much in league play.

Chris...welcome to The Space. Post here, post often!
Posted by: 86Cane | March 12, 2010 at 04:45 PM
and that's your game right there.
as sloppy as they looked early, they buckled down and made plays at the end. and once Reggie Johnson really learns the game he is going to be good.
DJ, keep it up bro.
Duke has trouble guarding teams off the dribble, so it open up some threes when they're forced to help.
Durand Scott = BOSS
Posted by: Daytoncane | March 12, 2010 at 04:52 PM
I know some folks call the fans that post on Canespace to be... oh, let's say overly optimistic.
So, how many here are predicting a win over Duke?
And how will you react if I suggest Duke is gonna end our run in the first ten minutes of the game? I gotta go with 85-72, Duke. Cmon Haith, PROVE me wrong.
Still, those two wins get us to the NIT, right? And from there we can be the regular season underachiever that overachieves in the playoffs.
Posted by: Ungar | March 12, 2010 at 05:13 PM
Durand Scott = BOSS
Posted by: Daytoncane | March 12, 2010 at 04:52 PM
i endorse that statement.
i can't remember how many times he did it in a row, but he was starting his drive like 35 feet from the basket and making the shots in traffic. Scott took over.
and Johnson needs to keep working on his body. get in better shape and he'll be able to show that quickness he got (that block he had that looked like it was going to be 5th foul made me do a double take - didn't know he could move that fast). he got it in him, needs to get to the point where he can show it more often and not being too tired out.
Posted by: Esteban | March 12, 2010 at 05:19 PM
i don't know if we even make the NIT if we lose to Duke. Really need to look at things as all or nothing. They win the ACC tourney they make post season play. They don't they watch it all on TV.
Posted by: Esteban | March 12, 2010 at 05:20 PM
Esteban, I am hopeful.
20 wins, 4 quality wins, that is NIT quality compared to the other NIT teams out there.
Have a great weekend, folks!

Good for Canes basketball......
They got Duke (the team I root for when Villanova isn't looking) up next, and considering how Duke has pissed me off over the last couple years, I won't be too mad if UM pulls it off.
BG been around lately?
I got a prospect that I want his cents on......

WHAT THEY DO, LEGION?!
Maybe we were too hard on Haith. Winning makes you second guess... The young guns are starting to shoot strait. Dequan Jones woke up. If he played like this earlier, they would've won more. With Collins out, the young guns are attacking, instead of waiting on him to waste the whole shot clock to make a move. It looks like Collins was slowing them down. If Brandon Knight comes next year... ;-)
Speaking of Mr. Knight...
There's a former high school basketball star that played against Brandon Knight & knows him personally, that hangs around my apartments here in Lauderdale. He told me that Knight has narrowed his list to Da "U" & Kentucky. You never know. Stay tuned...

Yea but how many teams will be screwed if there starter goes down. Look at Texas in the Title game this past season.
I guess, that's my point. Do you think we have our QB situation figured out better than Texas? I highly doubt we could ask any of our backup QBs to move the ball, let alone score on the nations top rated defense in a championship game, on the fly.

Far as I know LA can suit up for the football team whenever he wants, but when he plays (or is it suits up, can't remember?) in a game he converts to a football scholarship. In other words, they'd better have a football scholarship available for him whenever the team is seriously ready for him to go.
Nice play by the guys on the hardwood over the last two games. Total surprise to me given the way they clearly fell apart the last few weeks of the season. The young guys have a lot of promise, but I still have my doubts about Haith and his preparedness/adjustments. Two good outings don't change consistent issues that I've seen. Two more good outings would change the tone of the season more than a little though... :)
