The most likely thing that you are going to hear about the University of Miami's Spring Game on Saturday is this quote from UM Head Coach Randy Shannon: "The players were flying around."
Other than that don't look for too much coming out of Saturday's little exercise at Traz Powell Stadium in North Miami. Last year during the Spring Game UM LB Arthur Brown played great.
Now his biggest fan Canespacer Cat5 sits at home heartbroken and crying in his beer as Sir Arthur is back in Kansas with Dorthy, Toto, his family and most likely his younger brother Bryce joining him some time soon. Oh what a difference a year makes!
Last year UM RB Mike James was the BMOC. This year Miami running backs Lamar "The Truth" Miller and Storm "Hurricane" Johnson are all the rage heading into the Spring Game. One of the two are almost sure to be the star on Saturday.
But before you get all excited and annoint one of these two "The Next Great One" let's take a look back at what last year taught us.
Last year RB Damien Berry was the MVP of the Spring Game. He rode the bench and played sparingly. Mike James, in spite of his obvious talent, could not unseat starters Javaris James or Graig Cooper and eventually was moved to fullback after an injury at that position.
So please try to keep your pants on and bite your tounge even when one of the newest kids on the block "breaks out" in the Spring. It often takes a while for the next great thing to actually develop.
Other than that you will see all three of the back-up QBs trying to solidy their hold on the second string position behind Jacory Harris who has the Spring off after surgery on his thumb. Watch for some interceptions be safties Vaughn Telemaque, Ray Ray Armstrong and Jamal Reid.
Our advice: Enjoy the game, meet the players, but don't get too excited until Fall rolls around.
That's when you will find out what really is going to happen, who is going to play and who the difference makers will be during the 2010 season.

For what it's worth, I just found this kid on Facebook and asked him to consider UM.
UM seems like the perfect place for a kid looking for "something different"! It also doesn't hurt that he would be eligible to protect Jacory's blind side in 2011!

LSU acknowledges violations
By Chris Low
ESPN.com
LSU has acknowledged NCAA violations in a report outlining the university's internal investigation into the recruiting of defensive tackle Akiem Hicks.
In the 53-page report, LSU said it found violations committed by former Tigers receivers coach D.J. McCarthy, including improper phone calls, transportation and summer housing for Hicks, a junior college transfer. Hicks did not play in 2009, his only season with the team, and his scholarship was not renewed. He has since left the university.
Had Hicks played, the Tigers would have potentially faced forfeits of any victories in which he participated.
McCarthy was not allowed to recruit last fall, after the school launched its investigation, and has not been retained on LSU's staff.
"We stand ready to assist the NCAA with any further information they may need to complete this process," LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said in a release announcing the findings.
"It is a very serious matter any time violations of NCAA rules are discovered, but I take comfort in the fact we have a compliance program in place that discovered these issues early and took swift action to minimize the severity of the situation," Alleva said.
LSU chancellor Michael Martin said he believes the school avoided "potentially more severe sanctions" because the school detected the violations early and took the proper disciplinary measures.

Florida becoming tight end central
Not known for producing TEs, Florida might have the nation's top three this cycle
By JC Shurburtt
ESPN Recruiting
Typically, the state of Florida is known for annually producing great receivers, defensive backs, running backs, defensive linemen and, well, players at just about every position except tight end.
This recruiting cycle, however, it's a different story, as there are at least three elite prospects at the position.
Florida-commit A.C. Leonard looks like a perfect fit for that offense. Florida commit A.C. Leonard (Interlachen, Fla./Interlachen), Brandon Fulse (Fort Meade, Fla./Fort Meade) and Nick O'Leary (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer) are among the nation's top prospects at their position and could end up being the top three when ESPN Recruiting releases the ESPNU 150 later this summer.
"Florida has a trio of excellent tight end prospects, and few states over the last five classes have been able to produce this many high-caliber tight end prospects in one class," said Craig Haubert, who evaluates tight ends for ESPN Recruiting and has seen all three in person this spring. "All three tight ends can really strengthen any roster."

Butler head coach, who in three years took his Butler team to the elite 8:
Stevens was introduced as the new men’s basketball head coach at Butler University on April 4, 2007, just three days after his former boss, Todd Lickliter, was named head coach at the University of Iowa. Stevens became the third consecutive former Butler assistant coach to be named head coach of the Bulldogs, and he served under the previous two - Thad Matta and Lickliter.
Stevens worked with Lickliter for six seasons, 2001-07. During his tenure as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs, Butler compiled a 131-61 record, won three Horizon League regular season championships and made four trips to postseason tournament play. In 2006-07, Butler compiled a school-record 29-7 season and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs won the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden in New York, and the team was ranked in the “Top 25” of both the Associated Press (A.P. ) and ESPN/USA Today national polls for a school and league record 16 consecutive weeks.
Stevens, who left a position as a marketing associate at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis in June of 2000 to pursue a career in basketball coaching, joined the Bulldogs’ staff in 2000-01 as coordinator of basketball operations under head coach Thad Matta. He was offered a full-time assistant coaching position by Lickliter one year later.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs’ staff, Stevens served as a volunteer basketball coach at Carmel High School, working with coach Pete Smith. He further served as an assistant coach for the 17-year-old Municipal Gardens AAU team, helping the squad to a 12th place finish in the national tournament.

Anyone notice the Lady Canes just won their third in a row in the ladies NIT, beating N. Carolina A&T 84-77. It may not seem like much, but they've never won three straight post season games, are playing very well, and took down FU in game two of this run. Maybe if the ladies start recruiting better with some success it will carry over to the guys' side....hmmm...not.
Nice win by Butler tonight. I didn't have Butler still being around at this point, but since I figured on Syracuse losing to KSU next I'm okay with this. No matter, as I have no prayer given KU's bracket busting me up everywhere. I still like Kentucky over KSU in the championship, but unfortunately KU's bracket gives the Big 10 too much opp. with OSU and MSU still alive there. Gotta love the well-coached Northern Iowa story.

Shannon Post-Practice:
After practice, head coach Randy Shannon met with members of the media, here's some of what he had to say ...
On defensive end Adewale Ojomo's being back to his form of two years ago: Physically yes, but his timing has been off a little bit. He missed football for a year. But from where he was earlier in the year to now, he's back to being physical, tough and exciting. He's playing with a lot of emotion. His timing is off a little bit. Sometimes he will show some flashes and sometimes we'll be like whoa you still have some work to do. His progress is really above the expectations. We still expect more from him though.
On any one position surprising him this spring: Not really. Running backs, being so young, are doing a good job. Kylan Robinson (at middle linebacker) is doing a good job. Vaughn Telemaque has stepped it up. The young offensive linemen have done a decent job. All around, guys have done a good job.
Posted by: SOUP | March 25, 2010 at 09:32 PM
Post-practice notes:
• Baltimore Ravens and former `Canes running back Willis McGahee made another appearance at practice.
• The Hurricanes will take Thursday off before returning to the practice field on Friday.
• Former `Canes will be in attendance at practice Friday as Miami will welcome back former football players for an alumni weekend.

SHANDEL IS A a SCAREY SOFT ******.
I'm seriously SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired of him being the beat writer for our beloved Hurricanes.
He is bias against Shannon
He is EXTREMELY OPINIONATED for a sports sportswriter
He is not a good writer
http://www.fanfeedr.com/ncaa-football/2010/03/25/a-tale-of-two-media-vs-coach-spats
He makes trying to follow your belooooooved sports tiresome.
Only Shandel talks about how Shannon kept this in private and that is how it should be done, especially because it is the right way to do it, and Shannon is extremely private; then he proceeds to go right a story about the whole thing. Including calling the coach a liar about the MNW story ( he stands by his sources....)
Is anybody seriously just tired of this lazy chump and his terrible, negative attitude toward our program and coach.

Shandel is a total joke, but he's a total joke with a pretty powerful forum, a newspaper...and, personally, I think he's a Cane hater. I'm pretty sure Randy can't stand the sight of him, but he did try to make nice by saying we're "cool". Randy may not like it, but every once in a while, he has to kow-tow to jerks like Shandel, they can do him a lot of damage. LSU... Recruiting violations... two step. When caught, it amazes me that the violations and who are punished never go further then the last guy holding the balloon!

Total BS!!!!!!!!
There is no way in hell that McCarthy did this on his own, without other coaches (higher then him) and/or administration knowing what was going on. Sizable Money's were paid out of someones pocket and it damn well wasn't McCarthy's.
McCarthy, being the good guy, takes the hit for the school and I bet with a huge under the table bonus to keep the lid on...
Follow the money trail!

are Orlando Magic fans idiots?
anointing Dwight Howard as "Superman" is a direct insult at Shaq. at least Shaq started to develop a reverse hook at this point of his career compared to Howard. he was a better passer and was way more aggressive than Howard is now.
he'll never be able to take over a game the way Shaq did. he just doesn't have that mentality.
Never.
