Doc Ibis

First, after SOUP!!

solarcane

roach thanks for those clips, fantastic!

soup,
excellent lead in photo!

autumn

congrats on making a very boring subject (miami vs. barry in baseball?) an interesting read.

why don't you always include the article author?

SOUP

Autumn...thanks for the compliment. UM vs Barry has a major SNOOZE factor so by throwing in a little hottie (Berry) and a little UM football (Berry) we made it work.

I'll include the author from now on, several bloggers have suggested that. I write most of the articles and when contributors like Solar or Six write one I include their credits.

Unless I forget, which I sometimes do...

SOUP

Ryan Perry batting stats from 4/07 - 5/08, when he did actually start or come in to pinch hit

7 for 35 = .200

Rhino, if you're reading this, I pray that you're just sandbagging it right now and come ACC Tourney and post-season CWS tourney - you just start raking it at the plate, Pujols style

I pray that right as you pick up the release point of the pitcher, the baseball looks the size of Tyra Banks forehead and it is slowing down Matrix style for you to pick up the rotation on it, so you can crush it with that boat oar in your hand

B/c right now, it looks like you're trying to hit an aspirin pill with a car antenna

Do whatever you have to do to get out of your funk kid. Go hit up as many slumpbusters as possible ... go spend as many waking hours hitting off the tee as possible ... collect as many bottle caps as you can and have someone throw them at you, while you try and hit them with a broom stick ... go into a bunch of neighborhoods at night, tape a golf ball on the top of as many mailboxes as possible, then have Grandy/Roadrunner/Easy Erickson/Roldy Martinez drive you in a truck through the neighborhoods, while you stand up in the back and try and hit the golf balls off the mailboxes

Get some kind of hypnotherapy DVD, where you just sit there for an hour and watch Rod Carew take batting practice in an empty sunny field, with the camera placed right behind him so you can see the flight path of the ball from the pitcher and off the bat ... some of it will be in slow motion, the rest will be in real time

Just start hitting kid

Six

Good write up as well

Canes dirt pups did what they're supposed to do with a team like Barry, don't play down to them, just crush 'em and get your work in

canesteeler

Six I like the team TB put on the field this year! Go Rays

Six

canesteeler - they're gritty as hell, huh

They remind me of the '98 Yankees in the fact that they're just relentless out there on the field. They play good defense behind their pitchers and for the most part, make the most of their at bats

Getting the new hitting coach from Cleveland this past year helped tremendously, Derek Shelton. Four out of the five years he was with Cleveland, they finished 7th or better in the AL in batting avg (5th, 4th, 7th, 12th, 6th) .. 5th or better in on base percentage (3rd, 3rd, 7th, 4th, 5th).. 7th or better in slugging percentage (3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th) .. 6th or better in runs (4th, 2nd, 6th, 6th, 6th)

The Tribe could always hit when he was there and Shelton has created a certain hitting philosophy that will be used throughout the entire Rays organization - from Rookie A Ball all the way up to the big league club. That's the proper way to run an organization - everyone on the same page from the very bottom to the very top, so as the players progress to the next level, they're all on the same page on how to do things

I don't think the Rays will win the 114 games that the '98 Yankees did, but I think they'll get to at least 95 wins

They still need to hit better, but, they're hitting with runners in scoring position right now - so that's what really matters

They're young, gritty and have a little chip on their shoulder

They won't have Carl Crawford or Carlos Pena on the roster next year - which sucks - but, they're hoping that Desmond Jennings can step in for Crawford when he leaves. Jennings is one of their top 4 prospects in their entire farm system. They're also probably going to have to shuffle out one of their starting pitchers as well - like they did with Edwin Jackson 2 years ago - but they have a kid in Jeremy Hellickson down in AAA that is killing it. How he'll do at the big boy level - who knows - but, the Rays have the best farm system in the entire MLB (Twins are right up there, Rangers as well, so are the Marlins) and the past few pitchers that they brought up from the minors have done alright

David Price
Jeff Niemann
Wade Davis

It's too bad that the Rays don't have the '98 Yankees payroll as well, b/c if they had some owners that would spend like Steinbrenner does on his players - then they'd be just plain scary for a long long time

If they were to lock up their roster and starting rotation they have right now, with the loot that the Yankees/Red Sox/Mets spend on their teams?

Scary thought

Andrew Friedman is basically the best GM & Executive VP in all of MLB, esp. with the payroll he is working around

I still want to see the Rays beat the Yankees routinely in a series during the year. That's the measuring stick right there of just how good your team is

I tell that to some of the Rays fans up at work. Gotta bring them back down to reality sometimes

4-Real

According to barry jackson of the herald boss man needs to trim roster from 91 players to 85. Is anyone else besides myself concerned about the boss man's 'we can afford to be picky' attitude regarding the 2011 class? At the rate we are picking there wont be nobody left to chose from.

Fighting Ibis

4-Real

I think some of the players who have disappeared on the roster will be gone after this year. Gavin Hardin is someone who I think will be gone. One of the WR's who is buried?

This past season Cook, Smith & Brown bounced.

Windy

If Barry Jackson is right, that is 6 players that will/should either loose their schollies or transfer. Shannon could easily cut this roster down as their are a number of players that will never start or be very productive. However, I also believe that if you lure a recruit to your university with a bunch of promises, you cannot kick them out on the street if they do their best to live up to their promises.

The HS football world is small, and coaches remember recruits who are not treated fairly. Whatever Shannon does to trim the roster, I am sure he will be fair.

Windy1

This is probably the fastest [UM football] team we've had," Shannon said recently. "…We're real excited about it. When you give the ball to guys who can really run, things can happen."

Proof of the speed is UM's record-setting, 400-meter relay team comprised of football players. McGee, Benjamin and cornerbacks DeMarcus Van Dyke and Cory Nelms recorded a time of 40.15 seconds at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational April 10. It was the fastest time at UM since 1998, and ranks third in school history.

- Shandell Richardson, Sun Sentinel

I can't get enough of that article.

Six

Just as I talk about the Rays ..

they're going to get a perfect game thrown against them today

Braden hasn't thrown a pitch over 85 mph today, it's all been off-speed stuff for 8 innings

SlingBlade

Dallas Braden can talk as much ish to a-roid as he wants to now....

and i just happened to press the record button on this game...sure am glad i did...i am a huge A's fan...

The Orange Bowl will no longer be sponsored by FedEx, ending the longest-running naming rights deal for a BCS game at 21 years.

[+] EnlargeFedEx Orange Bowl
Richard C. Lewis/Icon SMIAfter 21 years, FedEx won't have its signage around the Orange Bowl.

A report in the Sports Business Journal said that FedEx informed ESPN it is bowing out of its sponsorship because the company didn't want a larger season-long sponsorship platform in college football, which is being asked of all BCS sponsors.

The company announced the move in a statement Monday. It said the decision was difficult but "allows us to focus and redirect our marketing efforts toward our other sports properties and marketing initiatives."

ESPN, which will begin broadcasting all of the BCS games in 2011, is currently working with Orange Bowl officials on a new sponsor.

The Orange Bowl said in a statement that "we are confident that the network will secure a name sponsor for the Orange Bowl that is beneficial for all concerned."

ESPN is responsible for lining up title sponsors for the BCS bowls as part of its contract to broadcast the games.

"We are in active discussions around the Orange Bowl, which is a premier property and presents a tremendous marketing opportunity. FedEx remains an important client and we continue to be engaged with them in other areas," ESPN's president of customer marketing and sales Ed Erhardt said in a statement e-mailed to the Sports Business Journal by ESPN's public relations department.

Renewals for sponsorships in the other major bowl games (Fiesta Bowl/Tostitos; Sugar Bowl/Allstate; Rose Bowl/Citi) are ongoing, the Journal reported. All of the title sponsorship deals ended after last season.

The Orange Bowl has struggled in ratings recently. The 2009 game between Virginia Tech and Cincinnati drew a 5.4 rating, the lowest ever for a BCS game.

BOSTON -- During the sixth inning of Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden's perfect game Sunday, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was asked what he thought.

"No more about him, please," Rodriguez said before scurrying off.

Later, in the dugout at Fenway Park after Braden completed his perfect game, the Yankees slugger was more forthcoming.

Yankees blog

Yankees Want to get the scoop on everything in pinstripes? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog

"I've learned in my career, it is much better to be recognized for all the great things you do on the field," Rodriguez said. "Good for him, he threw a perfect game. And better yet, he beat the Rays."

Before Sunday, Braden had made more of a name for himself for his enraged reaction to Rodriguez walking across the mound back on April 22, accusing the three-time AL MVP of breaking an unwritten rule of baseball etiquette.

A day later, A-Rod still didn't see the big deal.

"I was tired," he said. "It's really not that big of a deal. I've done that maybe a few dozen times. It's the shortest route. As I said yesterday, I thought it was pretty funny."

Braden didn't.

The A's starter shouted at Rodriguez after the inning ended, then continued his rant postgame, saying how disappointed he was in the slugger.

The squabble was still making news leading up to Sunday's start, and they were going back and forth in recent days. On Friday in Boston, A-Rod said he didn't want "to extend his extra 15 minutes of fame."

After Braden's historic accomplishment, others have joined the fray, adding even more fuel to the fire.

"Let's forget it, uh huh -- and stick it, A-Rod," said Braden's grandmother, a chuckling Peggy Lindsey, who was in the stands in Oakland watching.

As Braden celebrated the feat, Sunday night's Yankee starter, A.J. Burnett, was alone in the Fenway clubhouse and watched Braden. As Braden hugged an older looking woman, Burnett said out loud, to no one in particular, "Grandma, don't cross my mound."

I didn't want Braden to throw a perfect game while watching it, I thought it was funny when Longo tried to lay down a bunt in the 4th or 5th and the A's fans started booing

But after seeing him do it and then hugging his grandma on the field, who raised him after his mom died, it was very cool to see that

The guy pitched an absolute gem. His off-speed stuff was just filthy all day. He was hitting his spots and his defense helped him out - which they're supposed to do. The Rays just looked bad up there with their swings, with Braden and Landon Powell (his catcher) doing a nice job of pitching/calling the game

It is weird that the Rays have had 2 perfect games thrown against them in consecutive years. Good thing the entire season doesn't ride on just one game like that

As for A-Rod running across the mound ... he knows what he did and that it is an unwritten rule in baseball to not do that

Just like you're not supposed to stand anywhere near the circle around homeplate when a pitcher is taking his warm-up tosses

If A-Rod would've pulled that with Bob Gibson, Gibson probably would've started a fight with him right there as he was running back to 1st

IMO, none of those kids are at the top of any our lists don't need an offer quite yet. (though the two kids who play DL might be backup type plans)

^^^What he said^^^

But I will take it a little further.

#1 ITU is very ANTI-SHANNON. I know this for a FACT. Don't ask how, just trust me on that one.

#2. Notice that 3 of the people mentioned (Sumler, Williams, Holloman) play positions that we are LOADED at (WR, DE, S). At those positions we have HIGHER rated prospects than those. The staff we have now are on the up and up. Meaning if they offer a kid, they are NOT going to pull the offer if someone they like better wants in. We MAY only have 15 schollies for this recruiting class so we HAVE to be VERY PICKY and JUDICIOUS with our offers. This is because IF you put out an offer, the possibility of the kid committing is very real. That comnitment could then prevent a higher rated (on the coaches board) from coming. Sumler is a REAL talent. Very good player. BUT he's 5'8'' and played at Class 2A Gulliver's Prep last year. He's not at Columbus so I'm sure he'll be further evaluated in the spring and perhaps during the season. BUT of the WRs with offers now, who do you NOT offer to offer Sumler? Do you not offer Green and Dorsett from STA? Or perhaps you don't offer Eli Rogers at MNW? Or maybe don't offer 6'6 freak Kelvin Benjamin at GC or Ja'Juan Story at Nature Coast? You see what I mean. There is a definite pecking order and you have to get in where you fit in. I don't doubt the coaches like Sumler, but do they like him as much as others on their board...Remains to be seen. Same with Williams. He's 6'5, 215. We took a DE last year in David Perry and we are 3/4 deep at the position now only losing Bailey and Wesley this year. So DE will NOT be a priority this year, but of the ones offered, who do you not offer to offer Williams? Chickillio, Bryant, Maggitt? You catch my drift, those are some ballas man. With Holloman same thing, should they not offer Wayne Lyons, Dallas Crawford, Jabari Gorman, etc? Its a numbers game and like Coach ALWAYS says, sometime timing is bad for what the team needs and that is the case here. There will be SEVERAL good players that we CAN'T take THIS year because of the numbers. Blame the NCAA and the 85 player limit. It is what it is.

#3. Trust the coaches!

Of the ones listed, I wouldn't be surprised to see Watson and then PERHAPS Sumler and MAYBE Holloman out of that group be the first 3 of that group get offers IF they do get offers. But I wouldn't bank on Williams. Not a position of need and we have bigger fish on the line.

Canes info especially on recruiting is something in inhale like air on the daily.

Fighting Ibis

Miami has gotten better every year under Randy Shannon. Our track team is the fastest it's been since 1998 because our football players are speed demons.

Are people still trying to knock on Randy's recruiting tactics? The only must gets I see are Perryman, Wilder, Bridgewater and Kelvin Benjamin.

Relax! As long as the Onion is in charge we'll get all the ballers we can take.

Aqua

bg,

U gotta keep us locals informed on the good highschool matchups this season. I know I could've gone to a couple of games last year but didn't because I didn't know who or what to watch..

Loco

loco or reggaebob,

if you read this, drop us a note on what the word is on the U campus over the Thearon Collier subject.

I have read so many contradicting things on different message boards, I'll wait till someone we know on the campus tells us some facts
thanks

Posted by: solarcane | May 09, 2010 at 10:18 PM

honestly, I haven't heard much about it anywhere besides on here and message boards

j.w.

cc- good to hear from you! Your dad remains in my thoughts and prayers.
ITu just isn't very good at their own evaluations. The problem is, as was stated earlier, they focus on Dade in recruting and just assume that everyone in Dade is better than anyone else. That's not to say they are always wrong and Shannon is always right, but their credibility in ranking these kids isn't any better than any of ours.

I am a big fan of the Mercury News. Just something about how they are showing the OSU Miami game as a Top 5 matchup. Second best ranking on here after Captain Optimist's.

Many apologies, (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea gran culpa), but I also viewed this picture. I think it was more appropriate for the title "Barry Gets Whipped (And Likes It)". Is Halle Berry still hot, or is she one of those that have let themselves go like Darryl Hanna did?

Well since bg weighed in on recruiting I think enough has been said.

This class will leave a lot of people complaining in a what about this guy sense we only have 15 schollies. Rather than a who's who, this is how I would break down the class in terms of position

1 - QB
2 - WR (a big target and then a burner)
2 - OL
1 - TE (needs to be a stud)
2 - DL
2 - LB (one MLB and one OLB, IMO)
3 - DB (2 corners and a safety)
2 Wildcard - James Wilder if he wants, another WR or a slot saved for that special type of player who you save a spot for

Six

solar - you want some CELEBS WITHOUT MAKEUP?

Here ya go, proof positive that a keg of makeup and airbrushing on the cover of magazines/advertisements go a long long long way. GUYS DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE YOU SEE ON MAGAZINES, MUSIC VIDEOS, MOVIES OR ANY RED CARPET EVENT

I present to you, some scary looking mo-fos

Britney - white trash at its finest. I'm surprised she didn't have chocolate milk stains all over her shirt, along with bright orange fingers from munching on Cheetos all day long. The picture of her with her hat on in the car, looks like she just sharted herself while not wearing undies

http://i44.tinypic.com/2hr1f9l.jpg

Tara Reid - without makeup/airbrush & then with makeup/airbrush. She looks like a mix of the Emperor from Star Wars and Gollum from Lord of the Rings

http://i41.tinypic.com/2n8aq2f.jpg

Kim Kardashian - besides the fact that she has eyebrows that look like two big hairy Snickers bars above her eyes, she also has that Edward Scissorhands look going on. I think she and her sisters are actually going to have an event named after them in sports, to see just how many athletes can "do the Kardashian" ... Reggie Bush and Lamar Odom are already participants that we know of

http://i44.tinypic.com/n1djbr.jpg

Jennifer Lopez - two words .. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH RUUUNNNNNNNNNNNN !!!!!!!!!!!". I didn't think anyone could look scarier than her emaciated looking cocaine inhaling husband Skeletor - that dude makes Karen Carpenter look fat. But J-Ho without makeup? She's bad enough WITH makeup b/c when she opens her piehole, she's just barely a step up from Rosie Perez

DZ8

Why'd you show J Lo twice? No warning or anything... that's not right man.

orange 'n green in the vein

Six, Lindsey Lohann isn't as rabid chipmunk ugly as those "stars" you showed without her makeup but she definitely needs a coat to even her out with all that redhead complexion.

The Kardashians are just atrocious, all of them. I was a huge Lamar Odom fan from Rhode Island to the Clippers to the Heat and even cheered for him the one time I went to a Lakers game in my time in LA where I was six rows behind Spike Lee and Denzel sitting next to each other court-side (it was a Knicks game) despite hating that overrated Italian gunner teammate of his, but when he got so drunk he married the equine Kardashian I just couldn't cheer for him anymore, even though his game is the one that powers the triangle now for Phil Jackson, who I stand in awe of still.
