FROM WWW.HURRICANESPORTS.COM:

The seventh-ranked University of Miami baseball team returns to the diamond this weekend to take on Barry in a two-game series, May 7-8, at Alex Rodriguez Park. After playing Atlantic Coast Conference opponents each of the last eight weekends, the Hurricanes (34-11, 18-6 ACC) will step out of conference play to host the Buccaneers at 7 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Miami enters the weekend having won 14 straight games at Alex Rodriguez Park, including a series sweep of Maryland this past weekend in Coral Gables. More recently, the Hurricanes took this past mid-week off to focus on final exams. The `Canes have nine games remaining on their regular season schedule, with a trip to Atlanta to face No. 5 Georgia Tech coming up next weekend. Miami is currently tied with Virginia atop the ACC standings with a league mark of 18-6, while the Yellow Jackets sit a game back at 17-7.

As he has for most of the season's second half, Yasmani Grandal leads the ACC in hitting (.424), on-base percentage (.551) and slugging percentage (.551). Over his last 10 games, Grandal is 12-for-24 with eight RBI, nine runs scored and 16 walks, including seven intentional.

The Hurricanes have hit 44 homers over their last 22 games, after hitting just 24 in the season's first 23 games. Leading the home run barrage has been Harold Martinez, who has hit eight of his team-leading 14 homers in UM's last 20 games.

The pitching staff continues to be anchored by Friday starter Chris Hernandez (6-2, 3.32 ERA), who is coming off one of his best starts of the year in allowing just one run in seven innings of work against Maryland. Over the last few weeks, Taylor Wulf (0-1, 1.42 ERA) and Travis Miller (1-0, 1.46 ERA) have continued to see more action out of the bullpen. Wulf has allowed just one run over his last 9 2/3 innings while Miller is coming off an outing in which he allowed just one unearned run in four innings against the Terrapins.

Roger that Solar. See U on the flip side...

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

SSIB, Mayweather would DESTROY Pac. Like I said, either you're blind or ignorant. I can tell by your tone you're just a hater. You sound like all those squads that the U abused back in the day. hahaha

You think Hoya's taken humbrage and it blinds his ability to analyze a fighter? GTFOH! lol

And you don't even know his notable fights. Gotti wasn't notable wtf are you smoking? Gotti was a bum.

Castillo got bounced just like the bigger Hoya. And since it seems clear that you didn't see the Hoya fight, he wasn't past it. He wasn't prime Hoya but he was still on point and full size.

None of them got dismantled like Mosley.

And if you seriously watched Clottey stand there like a punching bag YET STILL LEAVE PAC BRUISED AND SWOLLEN WTF DO YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN TO HIM AGAINST PRETTY BOY?

Like I said, MAYWEATHER WOULD DESTROY FAKIN' PAC.

And Pac knows it. He should just take his azz on home with his tail between his legs and help his people before Floyd destroys his azz in front of the world.

Posted by: Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | May 06, 2010 at 04:51 PM

First of all, you can call me hater all you want, does not make you a better boxing expert than anyone else.

2nd of all, i did not dispute Mayweather's abilities to defeat Pac for it is a posibility.

Call me blind all you want, but i think we both know which one of us sounds more of a homer and that is you, if i'm not picking a clear winner because i think both boxers can give each other troubles in the ring and to you that's being blind, then hey so be it, but atleast i'm not a homer like you just calling the fight like it already happened. I'm one of the biggest Pac fan but i keep an open mind and even when he fought from De la hoya to Clottey, i thought there would've been atleast one that could've defeated him, now if you're going to compare Clottey to Mayweather, atleast compare them correctly, the only similarities is that both boxers are defensive minded, but Mayweather moves around and counters, the other don't and stays in one place.

Now if his face swelled up, it's because he fought a natural welter, Mayweather started as a lightweight, Clottey did not.

Clottey is a stronger puncher, and Mayweather is a technical boxer, so if you think Pac's face will swell up from Mayweathers punches think again, he's nowhere as strong as Cotto, Clottey, not even Hatton's punches, he wins because of tactics and that is it, he is no knockout artist!

Mayweather's knockouts 25
Pac's knockouts 38

Do the math!

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

And you don't even know his notable fights. Gotti wasn't notable wtf are you smoking? Gotti was a bum.

Posted by: Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | May 06, 2010 at 04:51 PM

And if you didn't think Gotti wasn't a notable fight, then give me a bigger name on his opponent list that is bigger name besides Mosley.

That's right, there are none, so if he ain't notable, then you just made his list of notable fights even shorter, congratulations for discrediting your own boy Mayweather.

Anything about baseball is like Christmas for me. Good stuff, esp. about Jon Jay ... the kid came in today to pinch hit/play RF, and went 1-2 with a run scored

He's now batting .357 (5-14) with 4 runs scored

JJ has some heavy competition out there to get playing time over, with Ryan Ludwick/Colby Rasmus/Matt Holiday in the outfield, along with Nick Stavinoha fighting for some time

I think JJ will get some work in though

Brauny is a beast. He hasn't hit a bomb in 12 games, he has 5 total on the year. I remember during the Brewers/Cubs 3 game series in the middle of April, he went insane. He went 7-14 (.500), with 4 runs scored, 2 HRs and 7 RBI

Then in the series with the Pirates a week later, he went 7-11 (.636), with 5 runs scored, 2 HRs and 8 RBI

The infield/outfield grass at Sunlife in that picture looks gorgeous ... but dude, it looks like nobody knew a game was going on that day b/c the stands are completely and utterly barren ... unless everyone is sitting directly behind home plate

We complain about attendance at UM games but just be glad you are not a Marlins fan! It was a 12:10 weekday game and there were maybe 5,000 there. And YES ALL behind home plate. They bused in 2,000 school kids and had about 3,000 regs there.

U will never confuse Sun Life with Wrigley Field for a weekday daytime game. EVER!

Wow! What's gotten into to you Solar? Or did the Gayturd troll from the PBP kidnap you, put TT eyeblack on you, and make you recite apologist gayturd excuses that we've been hearing for the last 20 years? You're starting to sound like a "gata".

Ungar

autumn, you mentioned the sun sentinel hurricanes blog. That looks awful. Some guy named OGV saying 9-4 is our ceiling (wow, clueless), and maybe five or six comments pre article.

No thanks. I would rather be here...

Doc Ibis

SSIB,

Floyd's notable fights (fights that people thought would be close/he would lose) were Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, Ricky Hatton, and Shane Mosley...

His big paydays were Zab Judah, Arturo Gatti (some people thought that Gatti was too tough for Floyd to hurt, but boy were they wrong), Oscar, Marquez, and Shane...

And Floyd never fought Tszyu...

Contrary to popular belief, Pacquiao does get tired and he does stop punching... He doesn't like when people return his fire, all you have to do is watch the Cotto fight... I like Manny and I thought the Clottey fight was entertaining but I just don't see him beating Floyd... But hey, I still wanna see the fight!!

Ungar

haha thanks csm, i think ill take yours and canez1 advice and have a doctor do that for me

Six ... honestly I don't care whether the kid got tasered but you are one of the few people I enjoy going on the opposite side of a debate cause you actually bring some heat...

It makes it fun to debate even if you are on the losing side.

CaneSawMassacre

So now lets argue L.T.

Why did this girl who was missing since March of last year only find a way to text her uncle yesterday... Hmmmm very fishy.

I think she was a runaway and was finally tired..

Either way. L.T. is a dirty ba$tard.

Ungar

Canesaw, are you saying LT tired her out?

CaneSawMassacre

wowwowowowow no...

CaneSawMassacre

I mean R.Davis must have started out nicely by providing her home money, pimping her or whatever, then started getting violent and ........ so on and so on..

This LT things was just the last straw for her.
I don't buy she couldn't have texted her Uncle sometime before now and last march but either way LT is a phucking idiot..

Just trying to figure out what is going on with this girl

Ungar

just joking around canesaw...

You ever notice that lots of folks pick convenient times to finally make contact?

I mean, the Man in Black is on a pirate ship for four years, and only shows up when Buttercup is kidnapped? He couldn't send her a post card from the Carribean?

Or Darth Vader, taking 18 years to figure out that a kid named Skywalker, from his HOME PLANET, might be his kid, and only shows up when he no longer would be on the hook for child support?

Of this girl, figuring out that she should have gotten LTs autograph for her uncle and decides to text him about it?

She's 15, how would she even recognize LT unless she was told it was him. I mean, when I was 15, would I have recognized a guy that last played ball two years before I was born? Hmm, is that Bronco Nagursky?

LT is a fool for getting himself in that position, but you are right, it seems suspicious like maybe a failed blackmail attempt was involved.

Zakkee

bg, how much do we owe you for the insider post? Thanks bro!

Honestly, it doesn't make sense that Pac can beat Floyd, although I'm pulling for Pac in the (possible) fight. The problem (as usual) is with Cavs approach to debate. You can present a stellar argument for Floyd winning the fight based on style, defense, size, speed, etc.. but to start or state your argument with quotes from Oscar (my former favorite fighter--so there's no hate there) de la Hoya is weak. Oscar needs to wipe his mouth...his comments are clearly business and have EVERYTHING to do with his beef and rivalry with Bob Arum (for boxing promotional supremecy). Golden Boy now runs boxing, except for one last key figure head and thats Manny Pacquiao. This enrages Oscar and they'll do and say anything to discredit Manny now, because he's in the crossfire. Oscar jumped in front of Mosley to fight Pac and Floyd, when Mosley was the more suitable match-up at the time. Oscar knew that his name still garnered the bigger purse than Mosley's would. It was a money decision that put Mosley's carrer on the backburner..he should've fought Pac and Floyd years ago (and he would've had a better chance then), but his boss (who he defeated) trumped him for the $.

Imagine your co-worker telling you to come in to work at 6:00am for now on instead of at 9:00am (the time your employer expects you in). Would you come in at the time your co-worker told you to...or your employer? Thats how I see Floyd's drug testing demands. Pac works for the Boxing Commission and they do drug test before and after the fights. Who is Floyd to tell his co-worker that's not good enough? He can ask or suggest, but demand?!?!? GTFOH! If you fight for the money only (as Floyd has said)...why would you stop a fight of this magnitude and with the biggest pay day of all-time? According to Floyd, its all about the money right?--well the money is there (a possible 60 million), so why are we discussing drug testing...lol?

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Zak, what's Hoya's advantage with admitting Floyd is the best, esp. since he's fought everyone and their daddy and is a multi-division world-champion? Does the fact that he lost to all three fighters suddenly jade his ability to analyze a fighter?

The reason I posted that interview was because of the things he said technically. And y'all are acting like he dissed Pac and said something that would prevent the fight from happening and thus prevent Arum from making money.

His words didn't do anything of the sort. If anything they'll fan the flames FOR the fight.

But my bottom line doesn't change.

FLOYD WILL DESTROY PAC. To quote Ali, "BEAT HIM LIKE HIS DADDY."

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

CSM, LT has been mentally/spiritually LOST for a long time. I would wager that he's sort of functionally illiterate. I bet he skated through school on his talent and never really learned how to read or think or write. That's why he's never been able to figure out what to do with himself when he's not on a football field. And for him that just leads to bad decision after bad decision, always looking for something to give him that rush that he got on the field.

I've never read or heard anything like that but just listening to him talk and thinking about North Carolina and school back then it makes sense.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

magine your co-worker telling you to come in to work at 6:00am for now on instead of at 9:00am (the time your employer expects you in). >>>>

Zak, that's a rather weak analogy bro, talk about grapes to watermelons.

Especially since Shane had absolutely no trouble with the tests.

And at this point Pac will need the money a helluva lot more than Floyd and to me THAT'S what will make this fight happen because truth be told Pac wants no part of Pretty Boy right now. But he'll be willing to take an ass-whoopin for $40M to bail out his political hopes.

Six

CaneSaw - I'm going to side with the MLB managers, MLB players and Commish of Philly Police Department ... who all agreed it was alright to do what happened

So if you consider all those people who are actually on the field of play wrong for thinking that way, then I'm fine with being called wrong for thinking right along with them

As I said as well, I wonder if the Governor of Pennsylvania would come out and say it wasn't necessary if he was throwing out the first pitch, someone jumped onto the field and ran at him - then people stepped in and tazed the guy to get him to the ground

HOW ABOUT THIS THOUGH -

I'm for what solar suggested as well, how about this - keeping some pooches at the ballpark ... I'm thinking about 3 Rotties ... put muzzles on their mouths with big smiles spray painted on it so they look happy and so they can't bite anyone ... have them at both corners in the outfield behind the fence, and one also in centerfield behind the fence ... they have little gates to come out of like in greyhound racing ... and if someone decides to run out onto the field - let 'em loose ... each Rottie will have a numbered hometown jersey on it, like in this instance, they'd be wearing little doggie Phillies jerseys - and the crowd can root for which Rottie gets the idiot running onto the field down first

Kinda like that Pepsi Challenge thing they have at Tropicana Field, where 3 jabronis dress up in big bottles and race to the finish line, Aquafina/Sprite/Pepsi

The Rotties would have muzzles on, so they couldn't bite the guy, but they'd be trained like police dogs and tackle the guy

And wouldn't everyone think it would be cute to see a big Rottie, in a little baseball jersey and a muzzle that looked like this?

http://crazy-jokes.com/pictures/dogsmile.jpg

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

SSIB, let me repeat this. FLOYD IS BIGGER, FASTER, SMARTER, HARDER HITTING, MORE ACCURATE, MORE TECHNICALLY ADVANCED AND MORE GIFTED AS A BOXER THAN MANNY PACQUIAO WILL EVER BE.

I can tell you're a hater because you try to downplay Floyd's brilliance with phrases like, "he's a more technical fighter" or "he's a better tactician"....

That's why you sound like teams and fans who lost to and hate the U because they always come up with some lame excuses like, "they just have more talent," meanwhile everyone was recruiting the same kids and a lot of the kids the U recruited weren't 5 Star talents in high school but now they're whoopin' the 5 star kid's azzes.

Pac's a good fighter who's had a good run.
He seems like a great guy and his story has a very American ring to it, rags to riches and all that.

But if he steps into the ring with Floyd he will learn the difference GOOD and GREAT, between Master and student.

Six

CaneSaw - LT is an idiot and I can see exactly where Ungar is coming from as well in thinking some kind of odd blackmail is involved

I just realized I could make a joke out of "odd blackmail" being involved in this situation ... but I didn't

Seeing how LT is odd, and is a ... never mind

That's my Family Guy humor coming out right there

BEERicane

Captain and Floyd need to get a room.

what Zakkee said about De La Hoya always pushing Mosley into secondary position when he should have been the one fighting Pac and Mayweather in the past is true. Also, agree with the Mayweather drug mandate being some b.s. That's why i said he's been known to duck people. He didn't fight Antonio Margarito cause it wasn't as lucrative as other fights that just happened to be against guys who were obviously going to lose pretty easily. He talked about wanting Cotto but never showed much interest in actually getting a deal worked out and that would have been very lucrative. He passed up Paul Williams for the same reason as Margarito. But now finds a reason not to fight Pacman. That's why as a boxing fan I don't like Mayweather despite respecting his actual boxing ability. He never has been that interested in fighting the actual best. He'll fight a washed up Gotti, washed up De La Hoya, a surprise champion (eastern european guy who's name i can't remember), but hardly rarely gets in the ring with a guy who's truly dangerous. Mosley, while not the same as he was back when they should have fought, is still a dangerous fighter so I respected him for taking that on finally. But he needs to stop ducking guys who people who follow boxing know are the best in the division and his provide the best matches. He probably would win just about all those fights...just would probably drop at least one, too. And then he could have a rematch and it be some real drama - potential Classic type deal for down the road when we look back. None of his fights would classify as a future classic at this point.

Esteban

LT paid for a prostitute that happened to be underage. That's his crime.

Six, your rottweiler idea would be wonderful until they took out an umpire or an opposing team player.

"Cody Ross is going back for a high fly ball, and GETS KNOCKED DOWN BY LIBERTY! Ohh, and BELL IS TAKING A LEAK ON HIM! The umpires are conferring and looking at the angry crowds and with tears in their eyes, they say NO INTERFERENCE, the triple for Ryan Howard is gonna stand."

I don't trust dogs in that situation, nor do I trust their handlers. These are Philly dog handlers after all, if the Marlins charge the mound, they would yank the muzzles off and sickem on the closes Marlin....

I had to go from Boston to Philly to see it, and it was mindblowing.

As they sang, "bricklayers" build up a wall around the band, and then at the end they exploded the wall into the crowd. Getting one of those bricks was a thrill for the folks in the front rows.

Those of us in the cheap seats bought a TShirt instead....

"Gionta's" goal is about the only way you're beating a dialed in Fleury this year. The cup is still the defending champs to lose and they got home ice back already so last night just delayed the inevitable to game six or seven depending on how well Malkin plays.

The Bruins on the other hand look like the best team in the NHL suddenly but they have no depth to match the Penguins with and Chara is a legendary underachiever deeper into the tournament. (See NJ vs. Ott '03)

A Pitt/Chicago finals could be just what the Dr. ordered for Commish Umpa-Loompa. The longest Cup drought vs. the game's new face? I could be convinced to tune in without too much arm twisting.

Montreal - wow. That is the beauty/frustration of hockey - LOL. I think one of the Habs goals bounced off of one of our guys skates. Yowza not much you can do about that. I don't think the Pens are challenging Halak enough. And their shots on goal are more like Florida Panthers shots on goal. I love MAF but he does let in the soft goal now and again. He is clutch other than that. The Pens need to let go of their pretty passing laser beam shots and grind this out. Ugly goals are what will get this done.

From Manny via email:

Good article. I didn't realize there were that many Canes in the bigs. Impressive.

I'm off to Chicago on Monday for the Cubs series. Tell the crew I said hello.

j.w.

Ungar- I remember that a friend of mine worked security for that one, he said the highlight was watching Gilmour in rehearsals. But I thought I didn't meet him until after my second year of school at UM (that would been in 1988). It does look like it was 87, though, so today's lesson is not to trust your memory after 20 years.

Sarasota 'cane

Ungar, I saw Water's "Dark Side of the Moon" show a couple of years ago and frankly it blew away the Floyd show at the Tangerine Bowl the same year you are talking about. The technology has finally caught up to Rogers vision.

Now granted it was raining cats and dogs in Orlando that day! Guys were selling trash bags for rain coats for $5.00 in the parking lot! Absolutely miserable! Couldn't light a joint during the show it was soooo wet out there! At one point we could not even see the stage with all the rain, but the pig would fly out of the downpour every now and then and everyone would cheer!!!!

I wish the original band was still together, but these are Rogers creations, and his new band plays all the riffs flawlessly. This will not be a show to miss for the classic rock crowd!

Nah, it's cool, I sent the cash to your new account via internet transfer. One rule:

U have to paint it ORANGE on one side and GREEN on the other!

86Cane

Ungar...come clean brotha: Are you M.H.?

Ungar

Nope. Are you guys seriously saying I sound like this M.H.?

I am HOPING it is meant as a compliment.

Now, in return, does anyone know why I picked the name Ungar?

Ungar

You are saying that this M.H. guy could
1. Be able to prove Six wrong about Steve Garvey?
2. Scare CanesawMassacre with an LT question?
3. Ask about Hampton Inn in such a way to make even YOU blush?
4. Recall details about an old Pink Floyd concert?

I guess I am not as rare as I thought....

86Cane

Ungar...YES, the M.H. comment WAS a compliment. u are very wise and witty much like M.H. was back in the SS days.

I know who U are now though, it's cool.

Ungar

SOUP, just kidding about the house though. I don't have the money for a deposit.

Well, off until Monday....

Go Canes.

autumn

ungar - your real name is "ragnu" but that sounds too gay for canespace?

86 - whats the scoop on "soup" - "charlie brown" is clear . . . but "soup"?

this has to be more interesting than boxing.

autumn

and i appreciate you sending a free t-shirt all the way to austria.

big karma points accruing on the right side of the ledger . . . to help balance you knocking mh off the board.

autumn

by the way, don't take any mention of mh as real criticism - you're doing a great job . . . but mh, udyn & some gator dude, who's name i forget did some good blogging back in the day. can't believe the sentinel of shandel or whoever let it implode . . . haven't been on there for a looooong time.

autumn

its midnight here in austria. i've read canespace long enough to know nothing good happens after . . .

night

SOUP came from the Jerry Seinfeld show. The SOUP NAZI used to deny Jerry and Elaine soup from his restaurant for silly reasons.

I was banning people in the early days left and right for all kinds of stuff so they called me THE SOUP NAZI which later just became SOUP.

cX3 wad up brudda

I'm the same as ever.

Just a bunch of folks becoming imune to the kool aid, and they needed some intervention to get them right.

We go back to the future this season which will unite every Cane fan, from cautious optimist, through ranting homer.

solarcane

I was doing some sped redding, but I think I got the gist of everything. I take a week off and try to catch up, see what happens.

About back to the future...I'm not sure what that gnawing feeling is in the pit of my stomach, but I hope it means something great is about to happen.

Ungar

CanesCanesCanes,

It is either that feeling that guy got in the movie Alien, or it is the anticipation of a 2001 type year.

I will let you know which on 1/11/11.

8-)

solarcane

I think this is going to be THAT year for us.
Everything about this team seems primed to explode

Ungar & 86,

Funny you should mention Norland Elementary. My wife grew up in a house near there.

Fun fact: THAT area of North Dade County has houses with BASEMENTS... (yes, hard to believe I know)... apparently it's high enough above the water table to pull it off. There were some nice places there. Most were built in the late 50's early 60's. While I went to Norland Jr. High, and Norland High School, I went to Hibiscus Elem. (My wife went to all 3 Norlands...)

And as most of you know, Randy Shannon, Darrin Smith, Kareem Brown, Antwan Barnes, Dwayne Bowe, Greg Moss, Richard Gordon, and JT Money are all Norland grads.

Go Vikings!

I will let you know which on 1/11/11.

man if only the game could start at 11:11 and end at 1:11

1/11/11 11:11 1:11
