Jay joins former teammates Brian Barton, Ryan Braun, Cesar Carillo, Chris Perez and hometown hero Florida Marlin first baseman Gaby Sanchez as members of the 2004 Miami squad that have gone on to make an MLBU roster. I guess it is safe to say that the 2004 squad had some "major talent"?
I recently had a chance to catch up with Gaby at the UM vs USF baseball game at Alex Rodriguez Park and Mark Light Field last Wednesday. Sanchez (above C) was having fun watching the Hurricanes pound the Bulls while hanging out with former UM reliver David Gill (above R) and one of Coral Gables' finest.
Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald recently did a feature on Sanchez. To read more click here:
Manny also wrote about Sanchez in his "Fish Bytes" blog. Click here to comment or read more:
Meanwhile before being called up to the Bigs, Jay was tearing up the minor leagues, batting .347 with eight doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI at Triple-A Memphis before being called up on Monday.
Jay was also a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts and had managed to hit safely in a league-best 16-straight games to begin the season.
Known affectionately to many Brewer fans as "The Hebrew Hammer", Braun is off to another hot start this season hitting for a .355 average (.581 slugging %) with 33 hits, 5 HRs, 21 RBI, 19 runs scored and six stolen bases in 22 games this year.
Here is a list of former Hurricanes currently on MLBU rosters:
Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers
Pat Burrell, Tampa Bay Rays
Alex Cora, New York Mets
Aubrey Huff, San Francisco Giants
Jon Jay, St. Louis Cardinals
Jason Michaels, Houston Astros
Chris Perez, Cleveland Indians
Gaby Sanchez, Florida Marlins
