Cam Newton Saga Reportedly Invites FBI Investigation.By FanHouse Staff

Cam Newton's dream Heisman season has turned into a nightmare lately. Reports that a man attempted to secure payment in order to guarantee Newton's signature on a letter of intent as a hot junior college recruit have taken the NCAA by storm. As if an NCAA investigation and muddled Heisman hopes aren't bad enough, a new report states that the FBI has taken an interest in the situation.

According to the report, the FBI has requested a meeting with John Bond, the former Mississippi State player who first alleged that Kenny Rogers, another former MSU player, contacted him to tell him $180,000 would get Newton to commit to MSU. According to Bond, two people were involved in the solicitation, though the identity of the other has not been revealed.

Bond's attorney reportedly confirmed the FBI request for a meeting, claiming the FBI agent told him, "We are interested in whether young men are being shopped to colleges."

They want the IRS $$$!

VETERAN'S DAY SPECIAL:

WEST POINT, N.Y. -Army coach Rich Ellerson is the odd man out right now among his service academy peers — Navy's Ken Niumatalolo and Air Force's Troy Calhoun already know the postseason beckons, while the Black Knights are knocking on that proverbial door.

As the football season enters its final weeks, all three service academies are in rarefied air — they all have winning records. Only twice since 1960 have all three finished a season with winning records: In 1963, Army was 7-3, Air Force 7-4, and Navy 9-2 behind Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Roger Staubach, losing to Texas in the Cotton Bowl; and in 1996, Army was 10-2, Navy 9-3, and Air Force 6-5, with the Middies beating California in the Aloha Bowl and Army falling to Auburn, 32-29, in the Independence Bowl.

That's it. And Army hasn't had a winning season since 1996.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said he could alter his play-calling a little bit on Saturday against Miami for Tevin Washington, who will be starting in place of injured quarterback Joshua Nesbitt.

“We might change it a little bit," Johnson said. "We will see how the game goes. It depends. It is an ebb and flow type deal. He was our starting quarterback this spring and my thought process on that is to let him see what he can do. It is like I told him, you don’t have to win the game, just do your job and manage the game. We are not the kind of football team that relies solely on the quarterback. I think you have to play and we have confidence in doing what we need to do to win the game.”

Johnson said the biggest difference between Washington and Nesbitt is experience, but Washington got a good opportunity this past spring to lead the first-team offense with Nesbitt out with an ankle injury. He also gets plenty of reps in practices even when Nesbitt is healthy.

The Hugh Spruill Strength Center

Fourteen of Georgia Tech's 17 sports programs work year round in one of the finest strength facilities in the nation. The Hugh Spruill Strength Center is a 10,000-square foot weightlifting facility, located on the ground floor of the William C. Wardlaw Center at the south end of Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field. In addition to the weight room, the facility contains a 3,000-square foot room that Georgia Tech student-athletes use to improve agility, speed, and quickness, as well as a 1,000-square foot covered outdoor area that contains specialized football training equipment.

The Hugh Spruill Strength Center houses some of the most impressive equipment in the country. The facility features 14 custom-built platforms and 10 specialized training pieces, all made by Sorinex. There are eight oversized squat racks, eight benches and six inclines with an array of Eleiko and custom weights totalling over 23,000 pounds. Dumbbell training is an important part of Georgia Tech's program. There are two sets of dumbbells: Ivanko dumbbells that range from five to 150 pounds, and one of the heaviest sets in the nation, ranging from five to 200 pounds and made by Tri-bar. The facility also features over 40 machines made by BodyMaster, Hammer Strength and Wynmor.

To enhance the Yellow Jackets' speed and quickness, the facility also provides more than 10 additional speed enhancement devices, designed to increase stride length and improve stride frequency. The Hugh Spruill Strength Center is the first collegiate weight room in the nation to utilize computerized Woodway Treadmills that monitor and provide feedback to the athletes during training sessions.

Core training is a very important part of the Yellow Jackets' exercise programs. The Hugh Spruill Strength Center provides four glute-ham machines, three landmine twisters, and over 40 medicine balls made by Dynamax and Power Systems.

The Hugh Spruill Strength Center, which was recently remodeled, contains a tribute to the late Dave Pasanella, Tech's former Director of Player Development and a Rambling Wreck football letterman in 1983-84. The "Strongest Man in the World" and the holder of 14 world weightlifting records, Pasanella died tragically in an automobile accident in 1990.

Philosophy

The main objective of the Georgia Tech Strength and Conditioning Program is to help each athlete achieve their maximal level of performance while reducing the occurrence of injuries through a sport specific program that is designed and administered by a member of the Georgia Tech Strength Staff.

Training programs are designed to increase an athlete's strength, speed, agility, flexibility, conditioning and explosiveness, all important components in the developing a highly-skilled collegiate athlete.

With the assistance of Georgia Tech's full-time Director of Sports Nutrition, as well as the bio-mechanics lab, the strength staff is able to individualize each athlete's workout in order to achieve optimal results. The Georgia Tech program provides workouts with periodization and a wide range of exercises to challenge the athlete in each workout.

Already without quarterback Jacory Harris, the Miami Hurricanes could be without two other key pieces to their offense when they play at Georgia Tech on Saturday in a pivotal ACC showdown.

Running back and leading rusher Damien Berry, who missed last week's game against Maryland but returned to practice Wednesday, and left tackle Orlando Franklin, who has started 35 games in his career, are both listed as questionable for the game.

Trailing by two points with 43 seconds left, Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon was prepared to try a long field goal to beat Maryland.

He says he was confident Matt Bosher would have made it.

"We needed another maybe 5 yards to get in field-goal range," Shannon said. "We were going to try one from about 47 yards to win it. Luckily, we didn't have to do that because of a great play from Stephen [Morris] and Leonard [Hankerson]."

The Miami Hurricanes are No. 1.

No, not in the national rankings or in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference, but as the nation's most-penalized team.

With 10 penalties called against them during last week's 26-20 victory against Maryland, the Hurricanes are now first nationally with 83 and are collecting more flags than the United Nations.

Once upon a time, that would have been a source of pride for UM. No more. The Hurricanes have cleaned up their act everywhere except - at least this season - when it comes to breaking the rules of the game.

"Penalties are just a lack of focus and a lack of discipline," cornerback Brandon Harris said. "They've hurt us on some big plays and they can cost you games."

Did u guys hear nething about this story...

Here's what happened. NFL baller Frank Gore was happily in a relationship with his child's mother, a woman named Drick. The two were living together as a family. And Drick's brother, another NFL player - Roscoe Parrish of the Buffalo Bills, became one of Frank's BEST FRIENDS.

Then things went LEFT. You see, Rosco's girlfriend and CHILDS MOTHER, a girl named Lina, started creeping around behind everyone's back and started dating Frank. Now keep this in mind, not only was Lina cheating on her babys father with his best friend . . but she was also close friends with DRICK TOO!!

Well that level of SCANDALOCITY deserves a world class azz whoopin. And that's what happened. Drick and some of her family members organized a way to STREET FIGHT Lina.

And last week, the two ladies came together to get it in. The fight lasted only a few minutes, and Drick was UNQUESTIONABLY the winner. According to the insdier,Lina was BEATEN, and her weave ripped from her head.

Jesus sone trouble within our canes family.... I wonde if this is real or just some tabliad bs!!

Bruce Feldman Q&A:
From FSegal527: How much longer do you think the Randy Shannon tenure continues at Miami?

I suspect through 2011, but it could depend on how his team finishes this season out. This group may be inexperienced in places, but it has underachieved if you look at the receivers, who are not young, or even the D-line, which at times has been great but very average otherwise.

If they end up losing five games, even having played a true freshman QB, that's going to be a tough sell in spite of all of the positive things he's done for the program off the field. Going into the season, it seemed anything 9-3 or worse would be disappointing, considering both the FSU and VT games are in Miami.

The biggest problem this team has had is consistency, and that falls on the coaching staff. The Hurricanes didn't look ready to play against FSU on a Saturday night, which was inexcusable, and then they said they took UVA too lightly. Again, inexcusable. That was the excuse they gave for the Wisconsin loss last year.

Go 8-4 and then win the bowl game and I think Shannon's probably safe. But with each lackluster performance, his base is eroding.

solarcane

Dallas Crawford is Michigan bound. Hurricanes don't start turning up the heat on some of these recruits, there won't be anyone left. Marcus Jackson, stated he was concerned about how the O-line was performing, especially with all the penalties and is exploring other options. I know this class was going to be small anyway but we've got less than 3 months and I really don't see to many Miami leans, with some of the big time players left. It's looking like another year of sleepers.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina said five people, including former Tar Heels and current New York Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks, provided "impermissible gifts of cash and jewelry and impermissible assistance" with travel and entertainment expenses.

Nicks, who left Chapel Hill for the NFL after his junior season in 2008, provided $3,300 in benefits, while former UNC players Omar Brown ($1,865) and Mahlon Carey ($140) also were listed.

The news release also mentions San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis ($20) and "a person from Miami whose full name is not known [$323]."

ACC blog

Dinich ESPN.com's Heather Dinich writes about all things ACC in her conference blog.

• Blog network:
College Football Nation

The school identified all five people in reinstatement requests sent to the NCAA as part of the process to clear players in the probe.

Nicks responded during Giants practice on Friday.

"I'm not angry at all," he said. "That's college and I'm in the NFL now, and I'm focusing on football."

Brown previously was linked to the investigation when the NCAA suspended cornerback Kendric Burney for six games and safety Deunta Williams for four games. The two players had traveled to California to visit the former UNC safety, who Williams said they had befriended a few years earlier.

The school said the amount -- totaling $5,648 between the five people -- also includes the estimated value of lodging at their homes during visits. Some of those benefits were repaid by the players or hosts before they knew they had broken NCAA rules.

The school also said that while Nicks, Carey and Brown thought they were helping friends and former Tar Heels, "there is no evidence that links them to inappropriate relationships with agents, prospective agents or runners."

Meanwhile, the university has formally broken ties with the tutor linked to the ongoing NCAA investigation of its football program.

In a letter dated Nov. 5 and released Thursday, athletic director Dick Baddour informed Jennifer Wiley of Chapel Hill that the university had learned she provided "impermissible extra benefits" to players, including about $2,000 in travel expenses this year. It also states she "provided impermissible academic assistance" to some student-athletes in 2009 and 2010.

"As a result of your actions, the eligibility status of several of our student-athletes has been adversely affected," it states.

The letter insisted she have no contact with any student-athlete for five years. It bars her from the Kenan Football Center and other campus athletic facilities in any role outside that of as a member of the general public during that time.

Wiley didn't respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday, but Raleigh attorney Joe Cheshire issued a statement on her behalf saying she "acknowledges her role" in the investigation. Cheshire said Wiley allowed a player to use a credit card for a transaction, then was "immediately repaid" for that amount and "never knew this type of transaction was impermissible."

"She gave several years of her life trying to uplift, educate and enhance the lives of student-athletes that she worked with and befriended," Cheshire said. "All of these young men were of the highest caliber. She did not intend for her work to 'provide impermissible academic assistance' and to the extent it did, she is deeply saddened, particularly as it has affected the young men she cared so much about."

The NCAA began looking into agent-related benefits in the program over the summer before expanding the investigation to include possible academic violations involving Wiley, who also had worked as a tutor for coach Butch Davis' teenage son.

Thirteen players sat out the opener against LSU due to the investigation, with six players sitting out the entire season. Three of those were either dismissed from the team or declared "permanently ineligible" by the NCAA.

Five players have returned to game action, while a sixth -- tailback Ryan Houston -- was cleared to return after missing the first five games and had planned to redshirt. But Davis said this week Houston might return for the final three regular-season games after the Tar Heels lost leading rusher Johnny White to a broken collarbone and Shaun Draughn sprained an ankle.

Defensive lineman Michael McAdoo is the only player from the LSU group whose status is still in question. He hasn't played this season. Fullback Devon Ramsay played four games before the school decided to hold him out. He hasn't played since.

Jones isnt shooting the ball well at 1-5 with just 5 points but he is working the boards solid with 8

Gamble might be the 3rd guy to help us out here tonight... 8 points (4-6) 3 boards

SlingBlade

jones isnt shooting good...but he is being very aggressive and big reggie is starting to dominate the middle...

SlingBlade

jacksonville starting to fall apart....dont be fooled this jacksonville team is a good team they made the second round of the NIT last year...and they won 20 games and were their conference champs...

Sebastian

Good call SlingBlade

Reg is taking over the middle. Now if we could just get the big man to sink a couple from the free throw line

pbcfrcane13

Canes All-Access: Steal and break away lay up for Durand... Time out Jacksonville... 71-64 Canes lead

SlingBlade

big reggie can stroke it from the line...he was the best ft shooter on the team in the ACC tourney last year...he just needs to keep being aggressive and getting to the line..

pbcfrcane13

Canes All-Access: Miami on an 18-3 run over last 4:23 -- holds the 76-64 lead with 7:12 to go

SlingBlade

Sebastian

I know alot of experts were calling for Wake to finish either at the bottom or near the bottom of the ACC but I didnt think they would drop a game to the tiny school from the 386

Good for Stetson...A nice win for their program

SlingBlade

this game is OVA...canes dominating now

SlingBlade

yeah wake is gonna really miss aminu and ish smith

Sebastian

Only 1 turnover this half and other guys stepping up to help out the 2 studs

A very positive 2nd half to this point

SlingBlade

SlingBlade

malcom grant injured...dont know what it is though

Sebastian

That will sure put a damper on things

SlingBlade
