Ed Reed

To watch Ed Reed(notes) fly around the secondary for the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, you'd have thought it was just another routine NFL Sunday. The six-time All-Pro safety was deflecting passes, laying big hits and harassing an opposing quarterback into a woeful passing day, just like he has throughout his nine-year NFL career.

However, this weekend was anything but routine for Reed. On Saturday police called off the search for his younger brother, Brian, who was last seen fleeing from police and jumping into the Mississippi River. The 29-year-old had been stopped Friday while driving a vehicle authorities believed was stolen. Police later found his jacket and shoes abandoned by the river.

The University of Miami women's basketball team won its 15th consecutive game and opened 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time in program history with a 69-56 victory over Virginia Tech Sunday at the Cassell Coliseum.

The Hurricanes were in for a battle early and the reigning ACC Player of the Week, Shenise Johnson was sent to the bench with 6:31 to go in the first half with a pair of fouls and her team trailing 22-19.

After the Hokies' Aerial Wilson hit a three-pointer to extend the lead to 25-19, Miami (16-1, 2-0 ACC) went on a 10-0 run without Johnson and led 29-25. The Hurricanes would never trail again.

And the Colts found out what happens when you don't use your Cane player properly.

Reggie Wayne, 1 reception, for 1 yard, Colts lose.

Jimmy Graham out, and Shockey only gets 2 passes for 24 yards, Saints lose.

Willis McGahee combines for 1 TD, 44 yards on 10 carries, 2 receptions for another 10 yards, and the Ravens win.

Coincidence? I doubt it....

raizecane

Ungar - I blame the Colts loss to that damn ass move by their hC to call a timeout and give the Jets time to rethink their options. Granted, they could have stil made a 50+ FG but it's riskier.

Did you see Peytons reaction? If not, it's priceless.

irst off, I would like to personally say that Golden just got the most down to earth kid that we could get in this class.
Taylor committed to the University of Miami on Friday when he took his official visit.
This big 6’8, 285
lb offensive tackle will be worked into the rotation his
freshman year. Taylor Gadbois is a late bloomer and he has a lot of
upside at offensive tackle. He is a very flexible lineman with good
bend, nice length, and that nasty streak you love to see. He
finishes a lot of blocks off and drives opponents off the ball. He
is still very much in the learning stage in pass protection and
needs to work on his footwork as much as anything. He is still raw,
but has much room to grow physically and mentally. Golden has been
on a hot streak addressing the teams needs. There are more recruits
expected to come to Miami. This is a great pick up for the Canes
with Future NFL draft pick, Orlando Franklin leaving.

HSN sat down to talk with Gadbois:

HSN: First off Welcome to the U. What other schools did you have to
choose from? How did Miami stand out from them?

Taylor Gadbois:Thanks, I had Michigan St., North Carolina St., Georgia Tech,Kentucky, and many more who were about to offer me. I have
been a Cane fan for my whole life, so when they called me I knew
what I had to do. It was just the matter of getting down there and
shaking hands with Coach Golden and telling him that I’m committed
to the team.

HSN: What made you come down for a visit?

TaylorGadbois: Coach Michal Barrow. He came and told me the day to
come down.

HSN: What has Coach Stoutland told you about your role on the team for years to come? Will you redshirt?

Taylor Gadbois: He told me I reminded him a lot of Jason Fox. I’m bigger then hewas and Stoutland told me I was a little more athletic and more
flexible then he was. Anything is possible with hard work. The coaches have the motto that “ the best player plays,” and if I’m the best player
they’ll start me. I think I will be starting my sophomore year. I
do not think I’m going to redshirt. I will probably get into the
rotation.

HSN: Is there anything that you need to do to improve so
you can be successful at the next level?

Taylor Gadbois: Obviously my strength has to go up, there are stronger guys that I will be going against and I’m trying to make sure that I don’t have any problems with that. I have been in the weight room a lot. I need to get more consistent with my pass protection.

HSN: Well the rumors have been that your favorite part of your visit was lunch. What made lunch so special that it was the highlight of your day? What did you eat?

Taylor Gadbois: We had Burgers, chicken and mix of other foods, and we sat on the coast by the island of Al Grove. We just sat down there with the coaches. It wasn’t about recruiting or anything like that. It was just about having a goodtime. You really felt like you were part of their family.

HSN: What other recruits do you think
will commit?

Taylor Gadbois:Jermaine White, He sounded like he really likes Miami.
Ricardo and I talked and both agreed that Miami was the best place so he
committed as well. If they offer Weatherford, he will most likely
accept also.

HSN: When you were on your visit, what did Coach Golden
spend most of time talking about?

Taylor Gadbois: He wasn’t all about the pressure stuff. He was all about letting you feel athome. He wants competition bad. He said that competition Is lacking at Miami on a daily basis. He used Jacory Harris as an example. When Jacory was a freshman he had to compete with Robert Marv, andthat was when Jacory was playing his best. He wants to bring that competition back to Miami. So every player gets better not just one. They are going to put the best players on the field.

HSN: What did Golden say to make yourself think “I’m going to be a Cane?”

Taylor Gadbois: When we sat down and started talking on Friday
night. He was very realistic to me. He reminded me a lot of my high
school coach, hard nosed. Golden is 24/7, he never stops
football. Every thing about him screams football. Golden will win
the National Title at Miami.

HSN: Will you be enrolling early for spring ball or enrolling in the fall?

Taylor Gadbois: I’m enrolling during the summer. I’ll be in there on June 27th.

HSN: When your plane took off, what was the main question you wanted answered by coach Golden? How did he answer it?

Taylor Gadbois: I wanted to make sure that my family was going to be taken care of. I wanted to make sure it was a family based team also. Another question was the academic side of it. I didn’t know Miami was
so academically inclined, that it was a challenge to be a good student there. I like the school system a ton. The student, teacherratio is great.

HSN: Who do you think is on Golden’s Radar?

Taylor Gadbois: Golden told me he that he going to go after Nick O’Leary
very hard.

HSN: What are your goals for next season?

Taylor Gadbois: Well obviously I want to be a starter, but my first goal
would be getting into the rotation. As a team goal, I would like an
ACC Championship. We have the talent there is no doubt about that.
I would like to keep a 3.5 GPA or higher.
HSN: Thank you Taylor. Glad you decided to come to Miami. Welcome to the Golden Era.

Taylor Gadbois: Thanks Kyle, I appreciate it.

Rumor has it THIS could be the new OC:

Ron Prince enters his first season as assistant offensive line coach of the Colts. Prince joined Indianapolis from Virginia, where he served as special teams coordinator in 2009. He spent 2006-08 as head coach at Kansas State. Prince is an 18-year coaching veteran.

In 2009, Prince was one of three former head coaches on the collegiate or professional ranks who served on the Virginia staff. At Kansas State, Prince was the first field leader in school history to reach a bowl game in an initial season. He earned 17 victories, the highest three-year opening total by a coach in school history. Prince had 19 players earn all-conference honors, and he directed Kansas State to its first-ever road win over a top 10 team (41-21 at Texas, 2007). His tenure included the school’s first-ever offensive consensus All-American (WR-Jordy Nelson). He recruited and signed record-setting QB-Josh Freeman (D1-09, Tampa Bay), only the fifth first-round draft pick in school history. With a reputation under Prince for outstanding special teams, Kansas State led the nation in kickoff returns and kickoff return touchdowns in 2006, punt returns and punt return touchdowns in 2007 and punt return touchdowns in 2008. His 2008 unit blocked nine kicks to rank second nationally. During his tenure, Kansas State led the nation with 13 punts and five kickoffs returned for scores and ranked 5th with 15 blocked kicks. His teams produced the highest conference graduation rate, totaling 21 all-conference academic performers.

Prince joined Virginia in 2001 as offensive line coach, and he added the duties of offensive coordinator in 2003. He helped Al Groh lead the school to four consecutive bowl games (2002-05). By 2003, his line allowed Virginia to lead the ACC in fewest sacks allowed. The 2004 team earned the same distinction, as well as boasting the ACC’s top rushing attack and total offense. During his stay, 11 Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors, including the league’s 2002 Player of the Year, Matt Schaub, and First-Team All-Americans Elton Brown, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Heath Miller. Overall, he helped develop nine offensive players into NFL draft selections. Prince was a volunteer assistant at Dodge City in 1992. He coached the offensive line and tight ends at Alabama A&M in 1993, worked as the offensive line coach at South Carolina State in 1994, coached the offensive line at James Madison from 1995-97 and was the offensive line coach (1998-2000) and running game coordinator (1999-2000) at Cornell. Prince served NFL Minority Fellowships with Jacksonville (1996), Washington (1997), Atlanta (1999) and the New York Giants (2000).

Great article on Auburn and Oregon and the evolution of the spread offense:

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/01/offensive_innovations_lead_aub.html

Here is an email response from the author who I had emailed and complimented for the research:

"Thanks for the kind words. I don't think pro-set offenses are dead. Florida and Texas are going back to it. And, as you mentioned, apparently Miami is as well. I think you'll see most teams at the very least have some sort of spread formations in their offense. More and more will probably have some hurry-up packages as well. The teams that can best afford to use pro sets are those who get the best athletes, particularly on the offensive line. Alabama still does a lot of pro-set, although they have incorporated aspects of the spread as well, such as the Pistol formation.

I think, if anything, the success by Auburn and Oregon illustrates that you can win many different ways in college football. You don't have to be set in stone with a traditional offense. But by the same token, there's nothing wrong with heavily using pro-sets, either. It's all about whether your players fit the system you have and whether it's coached well and everyone buys into it.

Andre Johnson Officially Pulls Out of 2010 Pro Bowl With Ankle Injury.

By John Oehser
NFL Writer
Andre Johnson on Monday officially pulled out of the 2011 Pro Bowl.

The announcement by the Houston Texans made official what had been assumed for the last several weeks, Johnson -- who was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl in eight NFL seasons late last month -- would not play after having missed the last two games of the regular season with an ankle injury.

Johnson, considered by many the NFL's top wide receiver, fought through 13 games this season with the aftereffects of a high-ankle sprain sustained in a Week 2 victory over Washington.

Johnson was voted a starter to this year's Pro Bowl, catching 86 passes for 1,216 yards and eight touchdowns.

He was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery the week after the regular season, one that ended with the Texans losing eight of their final 10 games.

Running back Arian Foster and fullback Vonta Leach also made the Pro Bowl for the Texans, with the game scheduled for January 30 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Quarterback Matt Schaub, defensive end Antonio Smith and strong safety Bernard Pollard were selected as alternates.

I could see him going to LSU if the money was that good. My bet is if LSU wants him they'll offer him over $4,000,000, then we'll see how bad FSU wants him. He would be the undisputed king of Louisiana if he goes, instead of having to battle FU and UM here for dominance. And the $EC doesn't have as much of a problem with buying your talent as the ACC does.

Rhuh rhoo...

Frank Reich is in his second season as quarterbacks coach of the Colts. Reich previously served as offensive coaching staff assistant with the Colts in 2008. He was a coaching intern from 2006-07.

In 2009, QB-Peyton Manning was 393-571-4,500, 33 TDs/16 ints., for a 99.9 rating and a franchise seasonal-record 68.8 completion percentage. Manning won an unprecedented fourth Associated Press Most Valuable Player Award (2003-04, 08-09), along with a 10th Pro Bowl bid, his eighth consecutive. Manning extended his own NFL records with his 12th consecutive 25+-TD season and a 10th 4,000+-yardage season. Manning (4,232-6,531-50,128, 366 TDs) became the 4th QB with 50,000 career yards, and he ranks 3rd in NFL career touchdown passes. Manning has started all 192 career games, the most ever to open a career by an NFL quarterback. The club had seven fourth-quarter comeback wins, the most by any team since the 1970 NFL Merger. The Colts had a league-record five consecutive fourth-quarter comeback wins. The club produced the NFL’s 2nd-ranked passing attack.

In 2008, Indianapolis ranked 15th in NFL total offense and 3rd in AFC passing offense, 5th in the NFL. Manning was 371-555-4,002, 27 TDs/12 ints., for a 95.0 rating. The offense sported four receivers with 50+ receptions for only the second time in franchise history (82, Reggie Wayne; 77, Dallas Clark; 60, Marvin Harrison; 57, Anthony Gonzalez). Wayne produced his fifth consecutive 1,000+ season and earned a third consecutive Pro Bowl bid, adding to each category in 2009. Clark set the franchise seasonal records for TE receptions and yards (848), then broke both again in 2009. The club surrendered 14 sacks, 4th-fewest in the NFL, while setting a club seasonal mark (since broken) by allowing one sack for every 42.8 pass attempts.

Reich was a 14-year NFL veteran quarterback. He was a D3-85 draft choice (57th overall) by Buffalo, where he played from 1985-94, before signing with Carolina in 1995. Reich spent 1996 with the New York Jets and 1997-98 with Detroit.

During his playing career, Reich engineered two of the greatest comebacks in football history. He first led the University of Maryland from a 31-0 deficit to Miami in 1984 to a 42-40 victory. It was then the greatest comeback in college football history. Then, in the 1992 AFC Wild Card Playoffs, starting for injured QB-Jim Kelly, Reich led Buffalo from a 35-3 third-quarter deficit to a 41-38 overtime comeback victory against Houston. It still stands as the greatest comeback in NFL history. Reich started the next game and led Buffalo to a victory against Pittsburgh in the Divisional Playoffs, before Kelly returned to help lead the team to the Super Bowl.

The MAJORITY, but not all, of current Miami roster players were Coach Shannon's " lads. "

So, what's your point.

With at least 4 or 5 Cane players exiting Coral Gables, that leaves five more available scholarsips for the class of 2011.

"I'm not scared to be different, put it that way," Malzahn said. "You've got to trust your philosophy no matter what the outside world thinks. You've got to be who you are because this is a very high-pressure profession. If you really don't believe what you're doing, you can be challenged at times."

-- EXACTLY! Howard S was willing to be different by making his players play pro-style. JJ fiddled with the defense after the UMD, BC, and UCLA fiascos. Then Dennis E switched to a one back offense. What exactly did Coker or Shannon do other than "stay the course"?

Football offenses have evolved in remarkable fashion. Mouse Davis, the run-and-shoot guru, gave a high school clinic in California last year in which nearly every coach in attendance ran at least a four-wide offense.

"Fifteen years ago I gave a clinic and they thought I was a communist because of that," said Davis, who is now the receivers coach at Hawaii. "I've heard all the BS that this is basketball on grass. You know, whatever. I'm a little passionate that football is a fun sport and built on intelligence with the kids involved."

-- And to think Miami had killed this off when they wiped out Houston's run-n-shoot, but now it is back, and there is no Miami defense out there to stop them. Time for the defense to evolve again.

The idea of swiping plays from high school and D2 and D3 teams makes perfect sense. I saw some plays that aren't seen at the college level, and like the wildcat and the triple option, are tough for a defense to stop unless they are prepared for it. We haven't changed our playbook in ages, and folks have a book on how to stop us.

The idea of swiping plays from ancient times also makes sense. Remember that the Cowboys brought out this weird formation that threw defenses for a loop? http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2390966

Sounds like it might be time to look at this game of chess on the field, and see what can be done next. The spread has a bunch of bishops running out there, and defenses are reacting to it. What would happen if a team brought back the plowing forward offense like "three yards and a cloud of dust."? I guess that would be a bunch of rooks pushing the ball straight forward, with tight ends running like knights on curl routes. All these light tall backs used to defending the spread might not be ready for the constant plowing and pummelling. Coach Golden, what to you think of that?

By the way, I thought this chart, although not part of the point of the article, gave another reason Miami lost in 2003. Terry Porter still gets his share of the blame, but if that defense had been more like the 2001 version, it doesn't even GO to overtime.

Miami had the TOP scoring defense in the BCS era in 2001, the only one to allow under 10 points per game (9.4). The next year? Far more average, 18.1 ppg, dropping all the way down to #21 out of 26 teams.

USAF,
I have to admit Rudy knew a lot more about Shannon a lot sooner than anybody here, including myself did.

I like Golden.

Argh. Top should have said "Great article SOUP."

Never understood why coaches had to be one "style" or another "style". Shula was able to move from power running to air it out on offense and from bend and not break to blitzing on defense. I know, I was spoiled.

Looks like you got a ton of it...still dropping? We may not get as much...but if it sits we will.....the sleet on top of it is the danger zone.

Reggie Wayne is one hot dude....1 catch. I cannot imagine not planning to get to him morethan that. Reavis is good....average year nothing special...that layoff hurt him....but I dont see him blanking Reg W like that all day....
