SOUP

CGNC...yes, it was me. UM will not like it but it is what it is. I have gone on record that I LIKE Donna Shalala and she has helped UM gain national recognition and improved the school's reputation big time.

Whether or not Donna is calling all of the shots in the hiring of the new UM AD or not it APPEARS that she is and that she is only willing to hire new, young, up and coming ADs who are not Alpha male types to avoid conflict and maintain control over the entire UM athletic department.

They may raise $$$ and play nice but not sure that is the way to win at all sports. The University of Virginia won 7 ACC titles in various sports last year. Miami won 0.

Did they even interview Keith Tribble from UCF or the UVA AD?

Old Skool

It's worth a click.

"Have you ever gotten arrested before?" Murphy asks Adel, who says no. "Then we could get off."

"There's no getting off. We're not in f****** Gainesville. They [St. Augustine police] don't give a f***," Adel says. "Do you understand I'll be fired and I have no chance of ever pursuing any type of career in basketball."

Eichkorn moves up again

Senior Bianca Eichkorn moved up to No. 6 nationally in both singles and doubles play when the latest ITA rankings were released on Tuesday. Eichkorn, who is one win shy of tying the program’s all-time singles win record of 131 (currently held by Laura Vallverdu), won a pair of matches on the road this past weekend to keep her perfect ACC record in tact. She is 30-6 overall, 19-2 in dual match play and 10-0 in ACC play in singles play, while she is 26-4 overall and 9-1 in ACC play in doubles while teamed with Anna Bartenstein.

Updated team rankings were also released, as the Hurricanes stayed at No. 5 nationally behind No.1 Florida, No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Duke and No. 4 North Carolina.

Miami will wrap up its regular season schedule Friday with a 5 p.m. match against the Blue Devils at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Eichkorn, the lone senior on the squad, will be honored at the match.

Free barbeque will also be served on a first come, first serve basis. Admission is free.

The future of Miami Athletics not being worth a sheyat????

I hope he raises a pile of cash, stays the hell out of Golden's way, and hires a basketball coach the bb fans can at least tolerate for the couple seasons he sticks around.

Same ol' sh*t, new day. Trippin out on the stupidity of the UM front office. What they do bro?

CoCane

Solar,

You think Frank Martin is a good hire for the hoops team? & do you think he'll come if they offered?

Canechic

If a basketball coach wants to stay at Harvard rather than go to Miami.....doesn't that say a lot? It is not easy to win in the ACC as the bottom feeder period. They have more of a chance to get to the dance in a bottom tier conference than as the number 7 team in the ACC.

That being said do we know for a fact they are not talking to this Martin guy?

Solar I am not sure you can attract candidates to many of these jobs at Miami right now......lots of pressure, a really tough city to live in.... I have been saying for awhile this school has some serious issue in the athletic arena, some people can't see this cuz they can't take off the blinders.

I hope this guy works out, I trust Barry Alvarez so let's see but you cannot even begin to compare a real college town to a fast pace win only city.

I'm not a big basketball fan, but everywhere I read anything, it seems like Martin is giving all the body language that he can muster to get Miami to offer.

There has to be something going on.
Maybe The U is paying Golden and his posse a lot more bucks than was originally designated for the football team?
Maybe they are skimming bucks off the other programs till they fatten up the kitty again.

Miami has to be Martin's dream challenge and he'd pay dividends on the court in a very short time for the profile of the underdeveloped men's basketball program quickly. Even if he was just going to use the talks as a leverage point for more Manhattan cash at his current spot, UM still wouldn't be doing it's due diligence to at least talk to him about it's opening if they didn't interview him ala Leach this year for the football coaching job. Shannon not taking less money to coach this year is hampering the funds for this job obviously but Amaker wasn't right IMO in the first place whether he's interested or not. John Pelphry could be a darkhorse hire IMO since this search started.

The issues with Frank Martin are:

1. His use of illegal players at Miami High back in the day.

2. Apparently his language and demeanor during the Orange Bowl Classic rubbed many the wrong way. He dropped F bomb after F bomb and he could be heard four rows back demeaning and cussing his players.

UM athletics need coaches who are not going to take shit form athletes. It is as if the current administration at the U want to maintain a standard of not being revelent. I may be wrong but it is as if the UM administration intentionally look for black coaches who won't rock the boat and are fine with being the step child of the ACC. UM go and find a set of balls to hire a kick ass basketball coach who can at least get us to the NCAA rather than the loser NIT tournament! Frank Martin and Bruce Pearl should at least be given an interview! You bascially put Pearls ass on a short lease, bring him in on the cheap(1.2 mil) and let's play ball! I thought Coney got kicked off Plant??
I guess not

=======================================

Bennie Coney could talk exclusively about his ever-growing list of scholarship offers.

He said Monday night that his top five schools, in no order are Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Cincinnati and LSU. He has 13 total offers. He has said all along that FSU is on top.
The Plant City quarterback, who will visit Miami this coming weekend for the 'Canes spring game, could also delve into his billing as one of the top prospects in the state of Florida.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text alerts: Get high school sports news on your phone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It would be easy for him to brag about the howitzer he has for an arm or about his surprising mobility.

He isn’t bashful when it comes to those topics, but Coney also has no problem talking about some other, not-so-complimentary topics. Subjects about which he could easily steer clear or avoid altogether.

But ask him about his past and he's quick to talk about some issues he had to deal with off the field last year.

Coney, who was recently ranked the No. 1 QB in the state and 22nd overall in the Scout.com 200, participated in just six games as a junior because he was suspended on two separate occasions. The second suspension — stemming from an altercation with a teammate — resulted in him being dismissed from the team indefinitely. The last game he played for Plant City was October 15.

He's back now. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder is working hard to prove to his teammates and coaches that he has control of his temper. That confidence in his ability to control his emotions is also why he doesn’t hide from his previous mistakes. And it's why he will admit to anyone that he messed up.

“I know that’s in the past now,” Coney said. “I’m over it now, it’s all a maturing stage. I was immature. … I looked at what happened, found that it was pretty much my fault and I had to deal with the consequences.”

The consequences of Coney’s mistake became evident as he watched games from the sideline. It was a sobering experience for him.

“It was tough,” Coney said. “Even though I was so called 'kicked off the team,' I was there every game -- until I got dismissed -- on the sideline watching them play. I got to see them play so that’s what ate me up even more because I was like, ‘Dang, I know I could have made that pass’ or something like that. It just ate me up inside.”

It motivated Coney to work on his problems.

“The way I came back was just staying close to the team,” Coney said. “I started taking anger management, even though I don’t think I have ‘scream anger’, it’s just I want to stop to getting to that point. So I started taking anger management to show them that I’m really trying and am trying to stay focused and all that stuff.”

Coney said anger management has taught him to “just shut up.” He’s also learned not to take playing for granted.

“It’s great to have a second opportunity,” Coney said. “Most things you do you don’t get a second opportunity. I just thank my coaches and my teammates for allowing me to come back.”

The Plant City players and staff have forgiven Coney for his transgressions and it seems that colleges have done the same as the offers keep rolling in. Besides his top five, also among the 13 offers so far are USF, Boston College, Texas Tech and Virginia Tech.

He said his suspension has never really impacted his recruitment.

“[College coaches] just wanted to see me to a better job of controlling my anger and try to get better with my attitude and stuff like that” Coney said.

Three teams in particular — Florida State, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame — have shown Coney they are not concerned about his attitude and have given him a little extra attention. That trio appears to be an unofficial early favorite list for Coney. Reading Coney’s body language while talking about the three colleges, it appears that mentioning Florida State produces the biggest smile and could be the team to beat at this point.

“Florida State, Jimbo Fisher, it’s like what, his second year? Great program and he’s starting to change it around already, you can see it ... the recruiting class,” Coney said. “The program is starting to step up.”

Coney will concentrate on attending camps this summer while also working on forming offseason 7-on-7 practices with his teammates at Plant City in order to get the entire squad on the same page.

That extra work will be a small toll for Coney, who wants nothing more than to fully regain the trust of his teammates. So far, his words are speaking volumes and he’s hoping his actions will speak even louder.

“I learned that you have to mature more, not everything is gonna go my way,” Coney said. “I learned I have to stay focused and let my team surround me, let my team push me on, lead me to the promise land. I learned a lot from it, it won’t happen again, I matured from it.”

Pat Lammer of the South Florida Sun Sentinel contributed to this report.

If the University of Miami's football infotainment project ever comes to fruition, here's a free-of-charge suggestion for the title: A Golden Opportunity.

The Hurricanes are in discussions with ESPNU to produce a half-hour show documenting the beginning of Al Golden's tenure as head coach.

Golden, get it?

Perfect, right?

"None of this is feasible without Al Golden offering the transparency necessary to provide fans the chance to get a unique perspective on the football program," Associate Athletic Director for Communications Chris Freet said Wednesday. "It's a full-access look at what goes into preparing for a college football season. There's a story to tell."

Well, sure there is.

But this is UM taking control of the message - nothing wrong with that as long as consumers are aware of the ground rules - and reaping whatever benefits that might come from having done so. Freet didn't say the university would have final-cut approval, but neither did he say it wouldn't.

"There's a great level of trust in the partnership," Freet said.

The best guess is that the show will hold spectacular appeal to the grass-roots citizenry of Hurricane Nation, and something less to anyone else who isn't a zealot about college football in any form. Again, nothing wrong with that, and there's much to be said for knowing one's audience.

The webisodes that have been rolled out on hurricanesports.com have been popular, and footage for the proposed show has been collected since early January.

Freet said the university has adhered strictly to NCAA guidelines having to do with recruiting and what can and can't be shown or mentioned.

"We believe fans are extremely curious about what goes into all the work done at a training camp, for example," Freet said.

But anyone who expects the show to be anything along the lines of, say, an HBO Hard Knocks episode, which frequently portrays the agonies of life during an NFL training camp, likely would be disappointed. Hardly would the Hurricanes cast themselves in a bad light and thereby sabotage the desired impact of the project, after all.

"In some ways," Freet said, "part of sports is failure. There might be a piece showing (quarterback) Jacory Harris throwing interceptions in practice, and everybody who follows Hurricanes football knows the criticisms he has heard in that regard. We're willing to admit to stumbling."

But there's no expose in the works here, which is what ESPN's 30 for 30 series provided when it recently aired a documentary on Miami's notorious national championship teams of the 1980s.

"In the grand scheme of things, that show brought a ton of publicity to us," Freet said.

Indeed, true. It was a reminder of times of grand accomplishment at The U, which Golden hopes to duplicate without the various unsavory Hurricane behaviors of those on-field glory years.

This UM effort is one in which the university would be preaching to its own choir rather than to the masses even though ESPNU would provide the chance to attract a huge, albeit probably only curious, audience, And the obvious in-house advantage when controlling the message is that the subject matter comes out sanitized.

"We're intrigued by the possibilities," Freet said.

The irony is that many teams - college and professional alike - increasingly are becoming closed shops when disseminating information to mainstream media.

That's a choice any school or franchise is free to make, of course. But the consumer would do well to differentiate one side of the menu from the other.

Canes in talks for a ‘Hard Knocks-type’show

Posted by John Taylor on April 13, 2011, 9:06 PM EDT NBC sports

There’s little doubt that HBO’s Hard Knocks, which features an inside view of one NFL team per training camp, has been a critical success for the pay network, drawing almost unanimous praise from anyone who’s caught a glimpse of the show. We’ve always wondered if any college team would ever make even a remotely similar leap and allow cameras “access” to areas normally off-limits to all but a select few.

Apparently, there is.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Miami and ESPNU have entered into talks about producing a Hard Knocks-type television show that would be what the paper describes as “a behind-the-scenes look at the Hurricanes during football practice in August.” Unlike the NFL version, however, it would be just one 30-minute special and, given the fact that it will be amateurs instead of professionals with the cameras trained on them, will likely be heavily sanitized with the school maintaining a significant amount of editorial control.

So, yeah, it might not really be a Hard Knocks-type show after all now that I think about it.

Regardless, the university appears excited about the prospect of bringing exposure to a football program that’s been, ahem, suffering through some hard times of late.

“None of this is feasible without Al Golden offering the transparency necessary to provide fans the chance to get a unique perspective on the football program,” Associate Athletic Director for Communications Chris Freet told the Post. “It’s a full-access look at what goes into preparing for a college football season. There’s a story to tell.”

No offense to the current version of the Hurricanes, who we are quite certain are a fine group of entertaining individuals, but this is an idea that’s at least 20 years too late as it pertains to The U.

Now, if you could somehow get cameras to follow Les Miles 24/7…

CGNC, I thought the Pens did a good job at the deadline bringing in reinforcements for the stretch run but I didn't realize how great a job they actually did at the time in retrospect. Fleury is the best goalie in the world right now and if he gets hot it might not matter they don't have Malkin. They will need Crosby back and productive at some point at a certain level though to win it all these next two months.

CGNC - I don't like you or canesteeler while this series is going on

solar - if 86 or you are extremely bored, you can dig up what I said when I first saw Coney at a 7-on-7 Tournament at USF last year

It was the first year the kid played QB, he reminded me A LOT of FSU's Xavier Lee from Seabreeze High in Daytona .. and he had Skip Holtz basically following him around everywhere he went all day long - guy was Coney's shadow

And when Skip couldn't follow him, he had Kevin Patrick talking to him as well

The kid is going to get a lot bigger/stronger, you could tell by his frame .. he's already got a pretty good arm anyway

Six

Sebastian57 and everyone else in the 813/727 - go see this kid if possible this upcoming year

Kent Taylor from Land O Lakes High

He was 2nd on the team last year in TDs behind Will Irwin, with 9

He was also 2nd on the team last year in average yards per catch with 16

“I don’t take it as a culture shock. I think you have cheese and milk there, too,” Eichorst said on a conference call Wednesday.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity. It’s a tremendous world-class institution, a world-class city. Talent-rich. I think people have a great passion for the University of Miami. I embrace the opportunity. I have been to a lot of different places. I think the key is to being positive to your approach and being committed to your organization. I am committed to the University of Miami.”

Aside from dairy goods, Eichorst will find things in Coral Gables are different than they were at the University of Wisconsin.

Baseballers

The University of Miami racked up 16 hits, including three home runs en route to a 10-5 victory over crosstown foe Barry University on Wednesday at Alex Rodriguez Park.

“We are starting to swing the bats better the last two or three weeks,” UM coach Jim Morris said. “It was nice to mix in some home runs.”

Barry starting pitcher Jordan Wellander (3-2) was shelled for six runs and 10 hits in three innings. Wellander ran into trouble early, giving up a two-strike single to Hurricanes leadoff hitter Zeke DeVoss. After stealing second, DeVoss scored when Nathan Melendres hit a line drive that was misplayed by Barry right fielder Drew Dwelly. Miami (22-11) added another run when first baseman Rony Rodriguez hit a home run high off the left-field scoreboard.

The Hurricanes continued their scoring binge in the second inning, getting four runs and five hits. After fouling consecutive pitches off his foot, Miami right fielder Dale Carey singled to score Chris Pelaez. On the next pitch, catcher David Villasuso hit a home run over the left-field scoreboard to give the Hurricanes a commanding 5-0 lead.

“I went up there and just threw my hands through it and made good contact,” Villasuso said.

Melendres got another RBI before the second inning was over, scoring DeVoss from second.

Wellander, who came back for the third inning, loaded the bases before getting Villasuso to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Miami starting pitcher Steven Ewing (5-1) was nearly flawless, giving up a run and six hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.

Ewing ran into trouble in the fourth. Dean Green got on base but did not score because Matt Petty hit into a double play.

The Buccaneers replaced Wellander with Brett Hammaker in the fourth inning, but he did not did not fare much better, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Shortstop Harold Martinez connected for Miami’s third home run of the game, hitting a towering shot to left field to make the score 9-0.

The Buccaneers (27-12) broke up Ewing’s shutout in the fifth when Lyndon Coleman’s single scored Chris Leon .

Barry nearly scored again, but Manny Pedrozo was tagged out at the plate after breaking for home on Ewing’s wild pitch.

Barry tried to rally in the ninth inning, scoring four runs and two hits. Pedrozo hit a two-run home run off Miami’s Adam Sargent.

“This game ain’t over till it’s over as Yogi [Berra] said,” Morris said.

“You have to finish a game.”

I thought the EXACT same thing.

Hey I was wondering what your take was. Paul Martin fits in really well as does Mikhalek. It was the team's goal to add defense this year. Yes, the Pens are actually playing D! Fleury plays better when he knows he has some D and can just be the netminder. But you are right - they need Sid back to go deeper into the playoffs. I am optimistic but this series with the Bolts is far from over. Pens powerplay still struggles

CGNC

Six - LOL! Don't be that way. J/K. Pens outplayed them last night. But this is not over.

Ohio_Cane

How about me, Six?!? I'm a huge Pens fan and live about 40 mins from there! I actually have tickets to Friday's game!

GO PENS, GO CANES!

Ohio_Cane

According to TheUFootball.com, here's who's expected to be in town for Saturday's Spring Game - "So here is who we are expecting so far….Ken Dorsey, Phillip Buchanon, Antrel Rolle, Brett Romberg and Bryant McKinnie. We’re expecting more names to continue to roll in today and tomorrow."

Six

Ohio Cane - dammit, you're in that category as well ... CGNC, canesteeler and you

I'm going to the games on Monday and Wednesday

Fleury was insane last night

fmcane

Soup, got the shirt and it is great! thanks again for doing what you do!

Oh yea, would love to see Frank Martin at least get a look. He is a native son, and a proven winner. He is not scared of the acc or a difficult situation that um bball is. He could be a great hire.

Lol, sorry bro! Nice! This will be my first playoff game live, so should be insane!

Ya, he sure was. The Flower always blooms in April, May, and June! =)

From another site:

Swasey has set a goal weight of 195 pounds for Harris
The weight room results are in.

And the Canes are showing plenty of improvement from a year ago thanks to the UTough program implemented by new head coach Al Golden.

Strength coach Andreu Swasey has set goals of a 405-pound team average in the back squat, over 276 in the power clean and more than 325 pounds in the bench press. So far, with some of the stronger players not testing due to injury, the averages are 384.57 in the squat, 269.44 in the power clean and 301.3 in the bench press.

"We're three-quarters of the way through Phase 2; we're about to enter Phase 3, which is the summer (workout) program," Swasey said. "Right now they're getting in football shape. We're getting tougher on the football field, building mass, building the foundation."

Here's the position-by-position by the numbers breakdown:

QUARTERBACKS

Jacory Harris didn't test in the squat, power clean or bench a year ago; this year he tested at 350 pounds in the squat, 242 in the power clean and 250 in the bench. Harris went from weighing 186 pounds a year ago to his current weight of 192 pounds. His goal weight set by Swasey for this year is 195 pounds.

Stephen Morris improved tremendously in the weight room compared to a year ago, going from a 275-pound squat to 330 pounds, improving his power clean from 220 to 252 and jumping up in the bench press from 220 to 250 pounds. Morris weighed in at 196 pounds a year ago; he now weighs 209 pounds.

Spencer Whipple improved his bench press from 240 to 255 pounds; his other numbers stayed relatively the same with a 385-pound squat and 252-pound bench.

- Swasey's standouts: "I think from their work ethic I've never had an issue. All three are very competitive. It's competition that brings us to a level we're at now - this program is built on hard work, competitive juices. The hard work and competing is there, which will make us better."

Asked if he thinks whichever QB works hardest in the weight room will have the edge to start in the fall, Swasey said "Yeah, and that's the thing I love about what coach Golden did with the off-season program (determining the depth chart based on who did best in the UTough workout program). What you do in the weight room affects what you do on the field."

RUNNING BACKS

Big improvement here compared to a year ago: Mike James had a nice jump in his bench from last spring, going from 340 to 355 pounds, and Storm Johnson improved his power clean from 274 pounds to 325.

Top 3 in squat: David Thompson (515), Mike James (500), Maurice Hagens (435)

Top 3 in power clean: Storm Johnson (325), Mike James (318), Hagens (274)

Top 3 in bench press: James (355), Thompson (365), Hagens and Johnson (330)

* Note that Lamar Miller did not test

- Swasey's standouts: "You see a Mike James excel, a Storm competing, Lamar Miller. It's showing their hard work isn't ignored and they're all getting an opportunity to showcase their talent."

Streeter made a nice jump in each area of testing compared to a year ago
WIDE RECEIVERS

Tommy Streeter made a big jump up from last spring, going from a 350-pound squat to 370 and raising his power clean from 242 to 264 and his bench from 275 to 290. LaRon Byrd is coming off a knee injury suffered this spring, but in weight room testing before the injury he raised his power clean from 252 last spring to 264 and his bench press from 275 to 280. Kendal Thompkins' power clean went from 242 pounds to 264 pounds.

Top 3 in squat: Kendal Thompkins (375), Tommy Streeter (370), walkon O'Dare (335)

Top 3 in power clean: Thompkins, Streeter and LaRon Byrd (264)

Top 3 in bench press: Streeter (290), Byrd (280), Aldarius Johnson (265)

Did not test: Travis Benjamin, Allen Hurns, Davon Johnson and LaRon Byrd (in the squat)

TIGHT ENDS

A big improvement here from a year ago came from John Calhoun, who went from a 405-pound squat to 430, from 300 pounds in the power clean to 313, and from 340 pounds in the bench to 345. Cory White also did a good job going from a 425-pound squat to 445 and from a 274-pound power clean to 301.

A player who cut down his body fat percentage from a year ago is Cory White, who went from 24.1 percent to 21.5 percent body fat.

Top 3 in squat: Cory White (445), John Calhoun (430), Blake Ayles and Chase Ford (385)

Top 3 in power clean: Ayles (325), Calhoun (313), White (301)

Top 3 in bench press: Calhoun (345), White (340), Billy Sanders (305)

* Asante Cleveland did not participate in testing.

* Transfer Blake Ayles' initial testing results: He weighed in at 262 pounds and squatted 385 pounds with a 325-pound power clean and a 300-pound bench.

- Swasey's standouts: "Clive (Walford) has been a great surprise [he tested at 315 in the squat, 230 in the power clean and 285 in the bench]. Blake has been a great addition, also with Chase Ford it's very competitive. We're definitely deep. And what's crazy is Asante is not even in the lineup (due to injury). It's just about creating depth. The competition coach Golden has brought has guys really stepping up."

OFFENSIVE LINE

Body weight is always a big concern for linemen. But this group is pretty much on target with no overly heavy tackles, guards or centers. In fact, some have dropped considerable weight.

The better conditioning is also reflected in body fat percentages - Harland Gunn went from 25.3 percent last spring to 22.9 percent, Malcolm Bunche went from 21.3 percent to 19.4, and Brandon Washington went from 31.5 percent body fat to 29.5 percent.

Players stepping up in weight room results compared to last year included Bunche (from 415 to 475 in the squat, from 242 to 286 in the power clean), Jermaine Johnson (from 500 to 535 in the squat, from 274 to 308 in the power clean), Brandon Washington (from 435 in the squat to 465, from 264 to 301 in the power clean and from 390 to 400 in the bench press), Jared Wheeler (from 365 to 375 in the squat, from 252 to 264 in the power clean and from 305 to 315 in the bench) and Shane McDermott improved in the power clean (from 257 to 274) and bench (from 350 to 365).

Top 3 in squat: Jermaine Johnson (535), Malcolm Bunche (475), Brandon Washington (465)

Top 3 in power clean: Harland Gunn (352), Jonathan Feliciano (332), Jermaine Johnson (308)

Top 3 in bench press: Bunche and Gunn (430), Washington (400)

Note: Gunn did not test in the squat and Joel Figueroa did not test at all. And Seantrel Henderson, in his first year testing, had a 375-pound squat, 230-pound power clean and 270-pound bench. Brandon Linder tested at 335 in the squat, 286 in the power clean and 365 in the bench.

- Swasey's standouts: "Seantrel Henderson, with his consistency and eating pattern (is doing well). They know how to eat right, not eating to get full, know portion size, moderation, what to eat and staying away from the fried foods. Bunche is coming on pretty well, but that group as a whole is coming on because there's a lot of competition and guys have been getting better and better. Ben Jones … those guys are working."

Vernon had the team's third-best squat at 505 pounds
DEFENSIVE LINE

Big strides were made here by Shayon Green (went from 365-pound squat to 415 and 301 power clean to 325) and Adewale Ojomo (went from 430-pound squat to 455 and from 286 power clean to 308).

In weight news, Dyron Dye went from weighing 242 pounds last spring to 262 pounds; Marcus Forston dropped from 313 pounds to 303; Shayon Green went from 243 to 234; Jeremy Lewis went from 310 to 325, Curtis Porter dropped from 323 to 297, Marcus Robinson put on eight pounds to 249, and Olivier Vernon gained 12 pounds to 259. Forston also dropped from 30.5 percent body fat to 24.3 percent, and Porter went from 30 percent body fat to 26.8 percent.

Top 3 in squat: Olivier Vernon (505), Marcus Forston (500), Micanor Regis (495)

Top 3 in power clean: Vernon (352), Regis (337), Shayon Green and Curtis Porter (325)

Top 3 in bench press: Forston and Regis (400), Porter (375)

Note that Jeremy Lewis and Marcus Robinson did not test in the squat or power clean and Dyron Dye did not test at all.

Freshman Olsen Pierre tested at 315 pounds in the squat, 220 in the power clean and 295 pounds in the bench.

- Swasey's standouts: "Olivier Vernon has continued to get better and better, got stronger, and the guy I've been real impressed with as having a great off-season was Marcus Forston. His numbers showed and his attitude as far as being a leader, earning the black jersey."

LINEBACKERS

Players that made big jumps up from last spring in testing: Tyrone Cornileus (went from 375 pounds in the squat to 395, from 242 in the power clean to 274 and from 250 in the bench to 290) and Sean Spence (went from 435 to 445 in the squat, from 296 to 301 in the power clean and from 255 to 280 in the bench).

Top 3 in squat: Jimmy Gaines (450), Sean Spence (445), Ramon Buchanan (405)

Top 3 in power clean: Buchanan (332), CJ Holton (325), Spence (301)

Top 3 in bench press: Akili Craig (335), Buchanan (330), Sean Goldstein (325)

- Swasey's standouts: "I've been real impressed with Sean Spence, how hard he is working. He's done some things. But not only that; how much weight he has gained (from 207 last spring to a weigh-in last practice at 220 pounds). And Buchanan and Jordan Futch. "

DEFENSIVE BACK

Ray-Ray Armstrong went from a 280-pound bench press last spring to a 305-pound effort (he didn't test in the squat or power clean this year), and other notable improvements came from Jamal Reid (275 to 305 pounds in the squat and from 200 to 210 in the power clean) and Vaughn Telemaque (from 365 to 375 in the squat, from 242 to 274 in the power clean and from 215 to 225 in the bench press).

Top 3 in squat: Andrew Swasey (445),Eduardo Clements (405), JoJo Nicolas (395)

Top 3 in power clean: Nicolas (301), Andrew Swasey and Telemaque (274)

Top 3 in bench press: Armstrong (305), AJ Highsmith and Nicolas (300)

Note that Brandon McGee was held out of testing and that Lee Chambers and Armstrong did not test in squat or power clean.

True freshman Thomas Finnie tested at 295 pounds in the squat, 206 in the power clean and 240 in the bench.

- Swasey's standouts: "Who stands out as DB's? Definitely Ray-Ray. And JoJo Nicolas, how he has been. Ray I've been excited on what he can do. Coming off a knee he didn't get to max, but I'm excited about his upper body strength and where he's at. I'm real impressed with Finnie, who has come in and worked hard."

Seantrel Henderson has already hit his target weight
* Swasey has set specific goal body weights he wants each player to achieve by this fall. Some of the more notable ones:

Jacory Harris: 195-pound goal weight (currently weights 192)

Sean Spence: 225 (weighs 220)

Adewale Ojomo: 270 (weighs 262)

David Perry: 260 (weighs 255)

Olsen Pierre: 280 (weighs 270)

Luther Robinson: 295 (weighs 284)

Andrew Smith: 250-plus (weighs 243)

Jermaine Barton: 305 (weighs 291)

Seantrel Henderson: 345 (he already made it at 344; Swasey said he came in at 386 pounds, adding "and this is his first off-season")

Shane McDermott: 290-plus (weighs 282)

Jared Wheeler: 315 (weighs 305)

Ramon Buchanan: 230 (weighs 217)

Kelvin Cain: 230 plus (weighs 223)

Jimmy Gaines: 230 (weighs 215)

Sean Spence: 225 (weighs 220)

Stephen Morris: 210 (weighs 204)

* Testing in the running events and vertical won't occur until after the spring. Based on last spring (the team is timed once a year) players to keep an eye on in the 40 are Tommy Streeter (4.30 last spring), Davon Johnson (4.37), Ramon Buchanan (4.41), LaRon Byrd (4.42 - although he may not test depending on the health of his knee) and Tyrone Cornileus (4.47). Other notable times from a year ago: Ray Ray Armstrong (4.69), Jacory Harris (4.67), Mike James (4.55), Stephen Morris (4.55), JoJo Nicolas (4.54) and Sean Spence (4.56). Also note that several big men broke the 5.0-second barrier - Micanor Regis (4.93), Luther Robinson (4.97) and Curtis Porter (4.99).

- Storm Johnson and Lamar Miller were among those not testing in the 40 a year ago.

Swasey sums up this year's lifting results, saying "I'm not always satisfied with where we're at, am always trying to get better. It never gets where I'm really content with everything, which is good because it keeps me grinding on what we have to get better. Overall I've been pleased, but am still not satisfied for where we have to get to."

Ohio - I am very envous of you going to the game. Hopefully they play as well!

Of course I love Big East basketball and became a huge syracuse fan. I fell in love with Rony Seikaly and became hooked on the orangemen!!!! I don't even think I knew Miami had a basketball team at the time.

Posted by: canechic | April 13, 2011 at 06:56 PM

Litterally LOL, baby.

Other than Arizona Wildcat mens hoops, I dig the nasty beastly best of the rest Big East basketball, too.

At least Miami fandom have college football and college baseball teams to root for. Most major universities only have ONE worthy mens sports team to back. Get the freak outta' here.

solarcane

Looking at the Canes improvements in the weight room from a year ago but having the exact same guy training them tells me Swasey is either lost running a strength program by himself or he was just lazy under Shannon and knows his azz is out the door if his players don't improve now.

Are the same players going to improve by the same percentages next year? nope.
They will continue to get stronger and have better endurance but by next year they will have actually been in a strength program for a year, and we will see gains but nothing like Golden's first year.

Yea I don't like Swasey.
I don't like anyone that only works the minimum they can get away with.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Canes football is headed to the ESPN platform during the offseason.

ESPNU and ESPNU HD has picked up three of the wildly popular Canes All-Access pieces, which originated on HurricaneSports.com, and will air them over the coming weeks.

On Thursday, April 14 at 4:30 p.m., ESPNU will air a reedited version of the First Spring Practice video that has been viewed over 25,000 times between the Canes All-Access and YouTube platforms. The Canes piece will air as part of the ESPNU show College Football Spring Blitz.

On week later (April 21 at 4:30 p.m.) ESPNU will broadcast a look at the First Scrimmage of the Al Golden era.

And to wrap up the inside look at the Canes football program and the new Golden era, ESPNU will air a behind the scenes feature on the Spring Game on April 28 at 4:30 p.m.

UM and ESPNU are also in conversations about a 30-minute special fully devoted to Canes football during training camp.

Of course, Canes fans do not have to wait until the ESPNU airing to view these pieces. All of the content is available at HurricaneSports.com/exclusives and YouTube.com/CanesAllAccess.

The Canes All-Access behind the scenes features have been debuting on HurricaneSports.com on a weekly basis and have been viewed over 200,000 times. UM is currently working on a new piece to recap the second spring scrimmage at Traz Powell Stadium last weekend. The new episode will take fans into the film room with the coaching staff for the first time in program history.

Solar, OR he worked them as much as they actually went to the gym themselves following RS's protocol. Not really sure how that works but I would imagince the head coach would take some initiative on the how, when and where

solarcane

cg good points
I don't like either one of them now lol!

Ohio_Cane

LMAO Solar!

CGNC

Solar - LOL yeah, the whole "you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink" might apply here. Swasey might have thought Shannon was on it, and Shannon probably thought that Swasey was on it. Communication was never a strong point of Shannon, this we know ;-D

Canechic

Let me tell most of the guys on the roster are those kids your mom wished on you after you fought with her for about over an hour over cleaniing your room. You know that project that would have just taken about 20 minutes to complete but you were so lazy you thought you may break her down by fighting for an hour and she would wind up doing it.

L-A-Z-Y there does come a point when you have to recognize there are certain things you must do on your own.....eat, go to bed on time, work out if you are on a football scholarship, go to class, set your alarm so you can wake up in time to go to class. Some of these things must be done on your own after a while....mommy, daddy or coach will not always be there to remind you!

orange 'n green in the vein

solar, the upperclassmen should be having more explosive testing growth numbers just by virtue of having aged three years or more since they've come into the program. If you want to see what the change in training regiment really does you need to compare the group of four year Shannon players coming out in the lockout draft to the new crop of players coming in as freshman in about four years and see if there's any statistical significance in improvement in the draft prospects weight testing numbers over they comparative spans of implementation under quarter 5. Or go dig up Golden's Temple weight testing results and do the same with UM's current draft prospects and Temple's prospects turned out under whoever Golden had in charge up there over the same four years and see if there's a significant difference there.

Randall McDade

Just a quick Thank You for the Canespace shirt received today in the mail. It looks great. Can't wait to sport it at the spring game!

Soup/Solar: KatieCane turned 14 yesterday, and has a CaneSpace t-shirt waiting for her when she gets home.

She'll use it for a night shirt and enjoy the hell out of it.
