On Thursday night the National Football League held the first round of their annual ritual of sometimes confusing and often times embarrassing infatuation with young college aged men also known as the NFL draft.
This is the time of year when grown men with many, many years of playing, coaching and managerial experience swoon over a few chosen college players to resurrect their team and possibly their own careers. They are all in search of the "Next Big Thing", a college player who will turn into an NFL Pro-Bowler and lead their team to a Super Bowl.
The NFL draft is the silliness that is college football's National Signing Day, except times ten that is exploited, I mean covered, on National TV.
There was a time not too long ago when the University of Miami dominated the NFLU draft. Between 1986 and 2006 Miami players were so often selected that the league became known as the NFLU.
This information is from the UM web site at www.hurricanesports.com :
Over the last 30 years, few programs can rival the success Miami players have had in the NFL Draft and no program can claim the number of NFL stars that came from the Coral Gables campus.
As the numbers below show, no other program boasts 20-plus NFL Draft first round picks since 2000.
And UM has 26... next closest is Ohio State with 16.
The Canes come in third in total draft picks since 2000 with 67 (second table below), but could jump up those rankings during the 2011 NFL Draft when anywhere between seven to 10 Canes are expected to be drafted.

So what happened this year for the many talented players from the University of Miami like CB Brandon Harris, WR Leonard Hankerson, DE Allen Bailey and OT Orlando Franklin?
Well, not so much. Miami did not have a player drafted in the first round in 2011. Look for Harris and Hankerson to go in the second round and Bailey and Franklin to go in round three. Colin McCarthy and Demarcus VanDyke should also be selected later in the draft.
For Hurricane fans, if you are waiting and wondering about when Miami will return to their consistent National Championship contention status, then U have to look no further than the NFL draft.
When the Hurricanes have several first round picks (Alabama had five first rounders this year) then U know we will have had a winning team that is contending for BCS Championships again.
And as for your South Florida home town team the Miami Dolphins selected Mike Pouncey, a center from the University of Florida.

Brandon Harris one of the very few on the team last year that gave it his all and gave a crap
He was the one on the sidelines always trying to get everyone jacked up, even when they were getting their ass beat by FSU and VTech
I remember him getting down to the ground on special teams after the kick returner got plowed, and Brandon got his face down there in the pile and starting barking at him, haha

Back in the 954 after the game. There was a second lightning delay in the sixth. Canes fought back to9 tie the game, didn't quit and gave good effort.
Too many errors (AGAIN) cost them the game. All errors are bad but three of the ones I saw tonight were just plain AWFUL.

For weeks, the Hurricanes draft talk was all about cornerback Brandon Harris and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson.
Some analysts thought Harris, who left the University of Miami after his junior year, would be the first Cane chosen. Others thought it would be Hankerson.
But few expected tackle Orlando Franklin of Delray Beach to hear his name called first Friday, the 14th pick in the second round.
Five Canes were chosen in the second and third rounds of the draft: Franklin, Harris, Hankerson, cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke and defensive end Allen Bailey.
“With the 46th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select Orlando Franklin, tackle,’’ announced “Bud Light Ultimate Fan’’ Ricardo Sime at Radio City Music Hall at 7:16 p.m.
“There’s a mean guy — I tell you what!’’ ESPN analyst Jon Gruden said of the 6-51/2, 316-pound Franklin. “I’ve seen this guy play tackle this year, left tackle. He played guard the previous three seasons. He plays tight end in the unbalanced line.
“Want to improve the toughness on your football team? Do you want to improve your inside running game? Bring this guy along.’’
Finally, after what must have felt like eons, Harris got selected 60th overall — the 28th pick in the second round — to the Houston Texans, who traded up 13 spots with New England to get him. Harris’ NFL dream had finally arrived.
“Houston bound thank you God,’’ tweeted Harris, 21, who will join former Canes receiver Andre Johnson, linebacker Darryl Sharpton and offensive linemen Chris Myers, Eric Winston and Rashad Butler in Houston.
“A very emotional day all-around,’’ said Harris’ older brother Tim. “Finally, to have that weight lifted off Brandon’s shoulders. … There was a big roar from everybody, and hugs, kisses and tears of joys.’’
About an hour later, Hankerson, a graduate of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High, finally went to the Washington Redskins with the 79th overall pick — the 15th of the third round. Two picks later, at 9:31 p.m., UM’s Van Dyke, who played at Miami Monsignor Pace, was selected by the Oakland Raiders. Then went Bailey to the Kansas City Chiefs, the 22nd pick in the third round.
“I think Hankerson should have been a mid- to late second [rounder],’’ ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said of UM’s single-season record-holder for receiving yards, with 1,156 in 2010. Hankerson, who will join former Cane receiver Santana Moss, was shown on TV crying, his head down, as he held his 2-year-old daughter.
“I’m very excited. I can’t wait to get out to Washington,’’ Hankerson said Friday night by phone. “I love them. Santana Moss — it would be great to play with another Hurricanes receiver.’’
Hankerson described the early part of the night as “very tough seeing seven other receivers get drafted’’ before he did. “Now I can’t wait to get on the field and prove those teams [that bypassed me] wrong. Once they called my name after all those long hours, after feeling like I was never going to get picked, the tears just came.’’
Harris, a two-time Thorpe Award semifinalist, also shed tears. The Miami native recorded 44 tackles and a team-high 10 pass breakups in 2010, a year after he led the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranked second nationally with 15 pass breakups. But Kiper was especially hard on him Friday, calling him an “underachiever’’ and saying he regressed and was “inconsistent,’’ a “roll-of-the-dice pick.’’
Retorted Gruden: “You sounded grouchy right there, Mel. Brandon Harris can play nickel and he can play corner. I realize he needs to play more physical. The whole Hurricanes [team] didn’t play up to their standards. But this guy has talent.’’
Franklin, 23, graduated from Atlantic High School. He was a second-team All-ACC selection this past season, and helped UM’s offense accumulate 5,477 yards, the second most in school history and most since 2002.

By the time teammate Orlando Franklin became the first Hurricanes player picked in this year's draft, Brandon Harris had moved away from the crowd of supporters in his hotel suite to watch the picks on the TV in the bedroom.
Franklin, the massive offensive lineman from Delray Beach, was selected Friday night by Denver at No. 46 the pick the Broncos had acquired from the Dolphins in the Brandon Marshall trade.
Harris, who had watched two cornerbacks taken to start the second round Friday after three the previous night, fell back onto the bed after yet another one was drafted.
"Maybe next round," he told himself, resigned to the fact that could be his reality.
Then his cell phone rang. It was the Houston Texans, a team he had only talked to at the Combine and hadn't individually worked out for. They had traded two picks No. 73 and 138 to move up and pick him 60th overall.
With that, an agonizing night turned to relief for Harris, who was projected by many as a late first-rounder, but slipped almost out of the second round. Three more Hurricanes were drafted in the third round.
Receiver Leonard Hankerson was selected by the Redskins 79th overall. The Raiders snatched up speedy cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke two picks after that. And defensive end Allen Bailey went 86th overall to the Chiefs.
It was a good night for the Hurricanes, who were shut out of the first round of the draft Thursday for the third consecutive year.
Franklin started the run Friday by becoming UM's highest draft pick since Kenny Phillips went 31st in 2008. A three-year starter, there are some questions about whether he's better suited as a tackle, where he played as a senior, or guard in the NFL.
The Broncos will possibly put him at right tackle to be Ryan Harris' successor. Franklin earned second-team All-ACC honors as a senior at left tackle, where he had 61 pancake blocks and 16 lumberjacks.
Franklin said at UM's Pro Day last month he had no expectations for the draft.
"I'm just happy that I'm getting an opportunity to be drafted," Franklin said. "I never thought I'd be in the position that I'm in."
Harris had hoped to go late in the first round after declaring for the draft as a junior in January, but didn't second-guess his decision Friday.
"Maybe it could have been worse," he said. "I'm just honored for the opportunity. After last night, I put everything behind me. I said man, this is just a dream come true. I'm just ready to get my name called -- wherever it may be, whenever it may be."
Harris was surprised that it was the Texans, though Texans receiver Andre Johnson, a former 'Cane and close friend of Harris', told Harris Houston was interested in him when the two worked out together two days earlier in South Florida.
"The Houston Texans, they believed in me. They believe I can get the job done," Harris said. "And I believe in them also. I told them there's nothing I will do to let that football team down."

“I think he wanted to prove he could do it on this level,” said Jack Curran, Larranaga’s high school coach at Archbishop Molloy in Queens, N.Y. and lifelong mentor. “He’s 61 and it was probably one of the last opportunities he’ll get to coach one of the major teams.”
The timing couldn’t be better. As Larranaga noted the night of his hiring, the ACC is “going through a transition” right now.
This upcoming season, half of the league will feature coaches in their first or second year at their schools — Miami, North Carolina State and Georgia Tech have made recent hires, Wake Forest, Clemson and Boston College made a change last year.
Plus, the quality of opposition in the ACC is not what it used to be. While North Carolina, Duke and Florida State reached the Sweet 16 this past season, just one other team – Clemson — made the NCAA Tournament, and the Tigers were relegated to a play-in game.
The Hurricanes, who’ve never finished better than 8-8 in the ACC in seven seasons in the league, were 6-10 this past season. But half of those losses were by four or fewer points.
“Everything is set up for Miami to make a move,” ESPN analyst and former Duke player Jay Bilas said. “Any credible observer would say this is the time to make a move in the ACC. He has been in the ACC before. He knows the culture and knows what it takes to succeed.”

I remember that B Harris moment. It came in the what seems like the only time we've beaten VT in the last billion tries, his 08' freshman year. Shields whacked the returner on Special Teams, and Brandon dove down on all fours, and started giving him the business.
That was a Stand-Up-And-Throw-Punches-At-The-TV moment for me. Loved every second of it.

O_C, if they hated how Buchanon hit in the Bay, wait until they get a load of DVD!
I don't know what's more shocking to me, Mallet in the 3rd or Ponder in the 1st, somebody mixed those two up on all the draft boards during the lockout apparently.

Hurri - that's when I really loved that kid, when I saw him do that, you could right then and there he wanted to do a lot more during the year but had to hold back ... that's why when he and Sleepy Spence were celebrating this past year, with Brandon acting like he was a jockey riding Sleepy while he galloped, it got me jacked up
Also remember up in Tally in 2009 when FSU was down at the Canes 5 yard line with :17 seconds left, on a 3rd and 3, the refs threw that bullsh*t flag on Brandon for pass interference to give them a fresh set of downs. Very next play, Ponder tries to throw a jump ball by going at Harris again and he fights for it

Harris is just a no-nonsense kid. Takes care of business, obviously brought up the way you want kids of today to be brought up. In all his interviews, very professional - so yes, even 18 year olds can give professional statements and interviews if they want to
I remember being at the FHSAA State Championship when Booker T. Washington won it, the same year that Miami Northwestern won it ... that was the first time I ever met 86 in person and also Keoki, also Manny b/c he was on the sidelines right next to me. Brandon was a beast that game, even took over playing at the QB position b/c their QB got injured .. got to see a very young Eduardo Clements running the ball in that game as well. But even then, the way Brandon carried himself - very impressive

Don't forget that Brandon had AJ Green ON HIS POCKET when Booker T played Summerville, back during his Sr year. You could certainly tell he was bout his biz' even back then. Another play I remember is a pass break-up that he had vs GT in 09'. It came against Demaryius Thomas (who's got about five inches and thirty-five pounds on him). Kiddo got up and walked away like, "Get the phuck outta here....Yall must be crazy."
Davon Johnson (who I'm still salty about never being able to stay off the sidelines) also burned Summerville up & down the field a couple times, too.
A LOT of potential talent hasn't even seen the field around this piece, over the last handful of years.
Sad.

Green looked suicidal when he got the call from Cincy during the draft .. I would be too

To start out the Rays season I sure didnt think Shields was going to do a darn thing for the year and boy up to this point has he proved me wrong(although some say I dont admit when im wrong)
He had another great outing today but got a no decision in the 2-1 victory in 10 innings for the Rays this afternoon
So far so good to start things out

canesteeler - I've been saying that for years now ... absolutely unbelievable to me, esp. using Harold Martinez as an example. His errors have gone up every single year
I posted something a few blogs ago that had the CWS teams from each year for the past 5 or 6 years or whatever and what their fielding % was, including how soon they got knocked out if they did make it
There were a couple of teams that had fairly low fielding % numbers, but the overwhelming majority of them took care of business in that category - the ones that didn't really have a high fielding %, their offensive numbers were pretty good
But I believe in the Rays way of ball - small ball, pitching + fielding = run prevention .. if they go yard, nice, but I don't want to have to keep my fingers crossed to see if that happens
Last year, prime example of how the Canes errors killed them

Sebastian57 - Shields has proved probably 90% wrong. He's been driving me nuts for a couple of years, everything statistically for him has gone up - all the wrong things - ERA, Walks, HRs, etc.
He was never a #1 starter to me, now that he's in the 2 spot I think that mentally is a huge burden lifted from his shoulders
Last year, I wanted to trade him for a new washer/dryer and a big supply of Tide
I say we trade him now while he's hot, haha
I think we might see Alex Torres on the mound tomorrow

The last few years I just didnt like seeing Shields taking the mound and was nervous on every pitch he threw
I have never nor will I ever boo a member of a team I am invested in and it bothered me when fans booed him but I cant say I blamed them either
He has just been a machine out there so far this season and im happy to finally see it
But that doesnt mean im going to call him that nickname some of the peeps in this area have given him hahahahaha

All are part of the tight-knit Gullah/Geechee community, descendants of slaves admired for preserving their African cultural heritage two centuries after being brought to the United States. Bailey's ancestors were among 400 slaves from West Africa taken to Sapelo Island by a British plantation owner. Some stayed after the Civil War, and they subsisted on a protein-rich diet of deer, boar, marsupials and shellfish.

This happens to me every year at the draft
You get to know some of these kids for 3,4, or sometimes 5 years and then to hear their name get called to become a member of NFLU is an emotional(sorry I know ill loss points for that)moment for me
Im so very proud of each and every one of these kids that are getting to realize their dreams of playing in the NFLU
