With the 2011 Spring practice period now history after last Saturday's scrimmage at Lockhart Stadium it is time to take a look at which UM football players grew into potential stars that Hurricane fans should look for this Fall.
If you have been around here for a few years then you are well aware of the fact that each year there are certain University of Miami football players that stand out during Spring practice and in the final test of the early season practice session known as the Spring Game.
Sometimes these players continue their development and progress over the long, hot South Florida Summer and eventually become top performers and team leaders. A few may even reach true "Legend of the Fall" status when the games actually matter and Atlantic Coast Conference play starts.
Other times these players whose stars shown so brightly in April fade quickly in the intense August sun or under the bright lights of the regular season and flicker out as failures on the field when the games being to count in September.
This Spring was no different than another and just as predictable as the rain and the heat returning to the South Florida landscape several UM players, and maybe some coaches, stood out above the rest. Some may even have distanced themselves from the competition at their position heading into the Fall.
Here are some players that we have designated as 2011 Kings of Spring:
RB Lamar "Speedy" Miller: As many of you know Miller attended Miami Killian High School which alone tells you that he is the best player on the team (Go Cougars!). All kidding aside, Miller may actually be the best running back at UM since Clinton Portis or Willis McGahee. The speedy Miller was nothing short of spectacular in the Spring game with TD runs of 71 and 64 yards and a third TD just for good measure. His performance at Lockhart last Saturday vaulted him into the starting role on the final depth chart of the Spring. It is going to be fun and exciting for Hurricane fans to hear the shouts of "Miller Time!" ring through Sun Life Stadium this season. For opposing teams...not so much.
RB Mike "Smiley" James: Before Miller exploded in the Spring Game, James was all but penciled in as the starter going into the Fall. James is the Hurricanes most complete back in terms of the requirements of his position: toting the rock, picking up blitzes and catching the ball out of the backfield. In spite of losing his mother in a tragic car accident last year, James has totally dedicated himself to being the best player he can be under new head coach Al Golden's regime. It is going to be a tough decision for UM coaches as to who the starter will be but either way the Canes can't lose with either Miller or James lined up in the backfield. Oh, and don't go to sleep on Storm "Magic" Johnson who also showed flashes of the spectacular during the Spring.
WR Tommy "Stretch The Field" Streeter: Streeter's name was mentioned more this Spring than almost any other player and certainly more than it was at any time under former head coach Randy Shannon. At times Al Golden seemed completely infatuated with Streeter's size, speed and ability to (U guessed it) stretch the field. Streeter had a great Spring but faded in the Spring game where he failed to show the fans what he apparently had been showing his coaches and teammates during practice. The Hurricanes need Streeter to come up big (pun intended) in 2011 to keep opposing defenses honest and off the line of scrimmage in their attempt to stop what should be the strength of this year's team: the UM running game.
OL Malcolm "In The Middle" Bunche: Bunche is a big, bad man. And we mean that in the nicest way. Bunche was in the middle of a Spring controversy of sorts as his weight room workouts and his work ethic benched last season's starter and consensus pre-season all-ACC OL Seantrell Henderson. Apparently, neither coach Golden nor coach Kehoe were not willing to wait around for Henderson while he was getting his hair done while at the same time Bunche was busting his rear end trying to earn the starting spot at LT for the Hurricanes in 2011. To be fair Henderson ended the Spring with a "lower extremity injury" (sprained ankle) and was seen hobbling around Lockhart Stadium during the Spring Game. Still the highly regarded Henderson will have his work cut out for him come Fall as he tries to wrestle the starting job from the big, bad man known who goes by the name of Maclolm Bunche.
DE Adawale "Gimme Back My Mojo" Ojomo: Here is another Hurricane that appears to have gotten his mojo (read: swagger) and his groove back under the new coaching regime at Miami. Ojomo was dominant during Spring ball and by all reports also became a vocal leader on and off the field (in team meetings) for UM this year. Number 97, who has struggled with injuries, motivation and conditioning since his arrival in Coral Gables a few years ago, finally seems to "get it" under Golden and D'Onofrio. He was a standout in the weight room, the film room and on the field at defensive end throughout Spring practice. Stella, who also got her groove back, would be so proud. I expect big, I mean REALLY big things from Ojomo this season. So should U.
S RayRay Armstrong: Hurricane fans have been waiting for RayRay to channel his inner Sean Taylor (RIP) since he signed with UM out of Seminole HS along with teammate DL Dyron Dye. Number 26 has not lived up to his high school hype - well at least not yet. But if you saw him knock heads and knock helmets completely off of Hurricane offensive players during the Spring game then you may be pleasantly surprised to see that the light may have finally come on for Armstrong under new defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio. Armstrong, along with fellow starting safety Vaughn Telemaque (who seen looking very uncomfortable while wearing a full neck brace at the Spring Game) must have a solid if not spectacular season in 2011 if the Hurricanes secondary is going to hold opponents offenses in check. We think he can and that he will.
CB JoJo "The Big Show" Nicholas: Nicholas switched from Safety to CB at the urging and pleading (read: desperation) of head coach Al Golden and defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio when projected starter Brandon McGee struggled early during Spring practice. Nicholas appears to love his new home at corner as did the coaches who heaped praise on JoJo all throughout the Spring. If Nicholas can become the lock-down corner for Miami in 2011 after being a merely average safety at UM he may just make it to "The Big Show" after all. That is assuming the NFLU gets its act together and actually ends the current lockout and plays football in 2011 and beyond. But wait, that means we have to suffer through watching the Miami Dolphins play another season, right? Hmmmm...maybe that isn't such a good idea after all?
CB Andrew "Walk On Water" Swasey: By far the biggest surprise of the Spring. Swasey literally came out of nowhere to walk on with the Hurricanes this Spring. Before it was over he had walked into being a Special Teams standout and even walked himself right into seeing some serious playing time at CB and Safety by the end of the Spring. Listening to the UM defensive coaches talk about him you would have thought that Swasey The Younger could have walked on water if he had tried! Hurricane fans and Jesus fans alike should look for the surprising Swasey to see the field and see it often in 2011.
Honorable Mention: Strength Coach Andreu "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Daddy" Swasey and Defensive Backs Coach Paul "No Relation To Ricky" Williams:
UM Strength and Conditioning coach Andreu Swasey got his new marching orders from Golden on the new boss's first day on the job. He has never looked back and in fact has brought the team forward on their march to get tougher, bigger, stronger and faster for 2011. Were not quite sure what Swasey was doing under coach Shannon but we sure do like what he is currently up to behind the closed doors of the Hecht Athletic Center under Golden.
Miami defensive backs coach Paul Williams may have the toughest job in the ACC: finding enough quality players to field a starting defensive backfield for the 2011 Hurricanes. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it and that somebody is Williams, who followed Golden and D'Onofrio from Temple to Miami. Somehow, Williams has managed to duct tape together enough bodies to not only field a unit but to actually find enough play makers to stay on the field and play respectably against the speedy, talented and high flying UM wide receivers. There is no doubt that Williams will have his hands full when the bullets start to fly for real come this Fall.

Meph - it's easy to look a lot better when you're playing the chumps of the ACC .. the bats suddenly come alive
VTech, Wake, Boston College, Maryland - those are the slowest and fattest kids of the conference that make it hard to pick to put on your team for dodgeball
It's like in the movie Sandlot when the kids in the little league uniforms all ride their bikes to the sandlot to see the boys playin, then he says to Benny Rodriguez "It's easy when you play with rejects and a fat kid, Rodriguez"
I think it will be interesting to see how NC State does against Virginia in their upcoming series ... they swept UNC, but got swept by GTech and the majority of their in conference wins came against those weaker teams that Miami beat as well
When you're playing actual quality opponents such as GTech and UiF, with UVA and FSU coming up - a little different story
Just making a Regional appearance should be a disappointment for this program, a yawner

A real real nice grab if Miami is able to sign him up

Larranaga
Gorge Mason's Jim Larranaga has, according to the New York Post, scheduled a team meeting for late Thursday, leading to speculation that he might leave the Colonial school to become the next head coach at Miami.
CBSSports.com first reported Thursday that Larranaga and Miami were in advanded discussions. In response to the report, George Mason officials acknowledged they had granted Miami permission to speak with Larranaga -- a 61-year-old New York native who has coached the Patriots the past 14 seasons. The highlight of his tenure is an improbable trip to the 2006 Final Four. He's also won four CAA regular-season titles.
Miami is searching for a replacement for Frank Haith.
Haith left earlier this month to replace Mike Anderson at Missouri.

I hope I'm wrong but
Something tells me if they hire Larranaga.
The biggest reaction is going to be indifference.
I really think they need a younger guy to promote and sell the program.

The majority of `Canes fans are hung up on Martin or Pearl
Sure they are both names people know from around the basketball circles but thats what most fans want anyway
To just bring in a guy with a name
Miami needs a coach that can coach guys that will be here for 3 or 4 years and have a solid system in place
Not some coach that has players leaving his program or the NCAA breathing down their backs everyday

sebas,
you think storm can't block because he never had to at Loganville, and never really played under Shannon,
or do you think T Richardson is trying to make him a complete back like James, to spell Mike. Storm has some crazy cuts and moves, he can definitely hurt other teams.
Lamar looks like he is in there till he fumbles or gets dinged.
Posted by: solarcane | April 21, 2011 at 09:27 PM
No problems, still a 4 run lead and sorry azz Choate has already been used
A win tonight to go with a Phils loss and you could be talking about the 1st place Florida Marlins
It doesnt matter that its 17 games into the season, they would still be ahead of the jacked up Phils and be in 1st place
Posted by: Sebastian | April 21, 2011 at 09:29 PM
Some running backs just can't block and some are afraid. I think storm needs to talk less and work more. Without being able to block he will be resting easy on the bench not matter how fast. I also think he is really immature solar.
Posted by: canechic | April 21, 2011 at 09:39 PM
From what I can see with #1 is that he cant read who is hot when the blitz is coming and leaves the QB out to dry and when he does stay in to block hes very quick to go into the middle of the line and take himself out of any possiblity of helping anywhere else
#5 will chip off someone then blowup the next person he sees. #6 isnt as physical but does about the same thing
As for #5, well hes just a special kind of talent that is able to do alot of things and if #1 was smart he would do everything he could do to learn things from him until camp starts up again
Theres no doubt #1 can do things with the ball in his hands and is a special talent
But in the 4th Q with the game on the line its #6 and #5 all the way
Posted by: Sebastian | April 21, 2011 at 09:48 PM
canechic, you might be hitting on something there
When I was trying to get the blog as many updates as I could I noticed awhile back Johnson overuses a lot of urban slang terms.
Jacory, Spence, Streeter and especially Brandon Harris always seemed very mature as far as being aware of how they spoke in public and what they wrote that anyone could read.

Have no fear Solar, 46 and 12 will be hooking it up on the GL on a few occasions
#46 is another guy that is just nasty out there
It really would not shock me to see #1 slip a little more behind #5 and #6. I hope thats not the case
#5 and #6 are just that darn good and they are focused on making the team better

A few breaks and this team will be a serious contender for the playoffs
The looming question is what do you do with Hanley?
Hes off to a terrible start at the plate and in the field
Does the brass try and deal him and his $11,000,000 for some pitching and young talent or do they hold out hope that he will carry this team for 162 games?

10 dubious records
1. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 26 consecutive losses. Not the way you want to start a franchise. Tampa Bay had to wait until Week 13 in 1977 for its first win, 33-14 at New Orleans.
2. Bobby Cox’s 158 ejections. Cox, who managed from 1978-2010—with a four-year break—led his teams to five pennants and one World Series title, but we’ll likely remember him for getting tossed.
3. Mark Reynolds’ 223-strikeout season. Reynolds holds the top three spots in the record book for whiffs in a season. (In addition to the 223 in 2009, he also had 211 K’s in 2010 and 204 in ’08.) Take that, Rob Deer!
4. Bert Blyleven’s 50-homer season. When Blyleven allowed 50 in 1986, it was Minnesota’s fifth season in the Hubert H. Humphrey “Homerdome.” He gave up 46 home runs the following year (No. 3 on the all-time list) when the Twins went on to win the World Series.
5. Rasheed Wallace’s 40-technical season. Wallace owns four of the top 10 seasons for technical fouls, including the record-setting 2000-01. He’s also the NBA’s career leader with 308 regular-season technical fouls.
6. The Philadelphia 76ers’ nine-win season. In 1972-73, the Sixers finished 9-73, 59 games behind the first-place Celtics in the Atlantic Division. Keep in mind the NBA had only 17 teams at the time, so talent wasn’t thin. Fred Carter (20.0 points per game) was the Sixers’ leading scorer.
Steve Spurrier made 12 starts for the 0-14 Bucs in his final NFL season in 1976. (AP file)7. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ 18 consecutive losing seasons. The Pirates set the record for the four major North American pro leagues in 2009, then extended it last season. The Pirates’ last winning season was in 1992-—the last year a slim Barry Bonds played in Pittsburgh.
8. Dave “the Hammer” Schultz’s 472-penalty minute season. Schultz’s record, set in 1974-75 with the Flyers, makes second-place Paul Baxter (409 in 1981-82) look like a nice guy. The former Broad Street Bully had another 400-plus-PIM season in 1977-78 before finishing with 2,294 sin bin minutes logged in his career (fourth all-time).
9. The BYU Cougars’ 26 NCAA Tournament appearances without a Final Four. Sometimes a dubious record entails having a hint of success yet not being able to finish the deal. The Cougars have made it to the Elite Eight just once.
10. John Reaves’ nine-interception game. On November 1, 1969, Reaves threw nine picks and his Florida team lost to Auburn, 38-12, the Gators’ only loss that season. Reaves finished his career at Florida with 7,549 passing yards and 54 touchdowns.

86 - saw that UCF beat UiF
Also though, UiF swept USF in 4 games & outscored them 24-4 ... Miami lost to USF
Beat FAU 13-2 ... Miami is 1-1 against FAU this year
Swept Boston College in 3 games & outscored them 20-5 ... Miami beat them in a double header, combined 26-10
Swept Miami in 3 games & outscored them 14-6
Swept #5 LSU in 3 games & outscored them 13-7 ... Miami hasn't beaten a ranked team all year, esp. the #5 team in the nation like LSU
But,
They're 1-3 against #8 FSU this year ... Miami is yet to play them
They lost the 3 game series against #4 South Carolina ... Miami lost the 3 game series against #12 GTech
They did lose to Georgia Southern ... Miami lost to Rutgers, Appalachian State, Illinois State, FAU
Still think O'Sullivan's team is a hell of a lot further along than #3's team

From canesport.com
Larranaga is a bit if a surprise candidate because of his age (61) and modest credentials. He has only made the NCAA tournament five times in 14 years. But he is most remembered for that Final Four run in 2006 and is the all-time winningest coach in George Mason history. His team was 25-5 this season (best in school history), and won a school-record 16 games in a row before losing to Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
............................................
I just hope UM is not hiring Mr.Larranaga mainly because of his low salary. My main question is will he be able to recruit better players than Haith? Will he be able to keep all the current players including big Reg? If so NCAA tournament here we come.
Let's go Canes!

Jim Larranaga
Jim Larranaga, the charismatic men’s basketball coach who led George Mason to an improbable Final Four run in 2006, likely will be named the next coach at the University of Miami. A deal could be reached as early as Friday, according to sources with knowledge of the search.
George Mason athletic director Tom O’Connor granted Larranaga permission to speak to UM officials, according to the school’s spokeswoman, Maureen Nasser, and sources said the two sides were close to reaching a deal on Thursday night. He is scheduled to fly to Miami Friday to meet with UM president Donna Shalala and other school officials. Pending their approval, he will likely be hired.
The New York Post reported that Larranaga met with his players Thursday night, a further indication talks with UM had become serious.
Larranaga has taken the Patriots to five NCAA Tournaments in 14 years, and is the all-time winning coach at George Mason and in the Colonial Athletic Association. In 2006, his 11th-seeded team knocked off Michigan State, North Carolina and UConn to reach the Final Four, and then lost to eventual champion University of Florida.
The Patriots went 25-5 this season (best in school history) and won a school-record 16 games in a row. They lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Ohio State.
Larranaga, a 61-year-old New York native who reportedly has Cuban ancestry, is under contract through 2015-16 and makes between $525,000 and $700,000 annually. He turned down overtures by his alma mater, Providence, in 2006 and has been mentioned for other jobs in recent years.
UM athletic director Shawn Eichorst said he was looking for a coach who preaches relentless defense, and treats his players with “love and respect.’’ Larranaga fits the profile. He is beloved at George Mason, known for his storytelling, and for a defense he calls the “full-court scramble.’’
Eichorst said Tuesday he would take his time finding a replacement for Frank Haith, but talks with Larranaga apparently escalated. Rob Jeter, the coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was also contacted, but it is unknown if talks got serious. Kansas State’s Frank Martin, Alabama-Birmingham’s Mike Davis and FAU coach Mike Jarvis have let it be known they’d be interested, but none of them had been contacted as of Thursday.

More Larranaga
George Mason's Jim Larranaga has emerged as the leading candidate to become the University of Miami's next men's basketball coach, and according to one published report planned to tell his players Thursday night he is leaving.
UM received permission from George Mason Athletic Director Tom O'Connor to speak with Larranaga, 61, and he has already interviewed with UM, George Mason associate athletic director for communications Maureen Nasser told the Sun Sentinel on Thursday.
It's believed the interview took place in the past two days.
It's not known whether Larranaga, who has led George Mason of the Colonial Athletic Association to five NCAA Tournaments in 14 seasons, has been offered the job. The New York Post reported early Thursday evening that Larranaga would be meeting with his players later that night, presumably to tell them he was taking the job.
CBSSports.com reported Thursday that, according to multiple sources, the discussions between UM and Larranaga about replacing Frank Haith were serious.
Haith resigned April 4 to succeed Mike Anderson as Missouri's coach.
Larranaga did not immediately return a phone message from the Sun Sentinel.
According to the CBSSports.com report, it's unclear whether Larranaga is on the verge of accepting the UM job or leveraging for a better contract from George Mason, which he led to the Final Four in 2006.
Larranaga, who is under contract through the 2015-16 season, could at UM come close to doubling his current salary. He earned $525,000 this past season and $693,750 total including bonuses. He received a contract extension in the spring 2008 after interviewing at Providence, his alma mater.
Larranaga is regarded as one of the nation's top mid-major coaches. In 2006, the Patriots beat national powers Michigan State, North Carolina and UConn en route to the Final Four, where they lost to eventual NCAA champ Florida in the semifinals.
This past season, George Mason beat Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to top seed Ohio State in the second round. The Patriots won 16 consecutive games during the season and finished with a 27-7 record. Larranaga also led the Patriots to the NCAAs in 2008, 2001 and 1999.
Larranaga, a Bronx, N.Y. native, has past ties to the ACC. He was an assistant coach at Virginia from 1979-86 the Cavaliers went to the Final Four in 1981 and 1984. He was the head coach at Bowling Green from 1986-97 before taking over at George Mason.
Larranaga fits the profile of the type of coach new UM Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst desires.
Eichorst said Tuesday he wants someone with a positive attitude who treats players "with the utmost respect" and in a "loving manner."
The Hurricanes' roster is set to return intact for the 2011-12 season with the exception of graduating senior forward Adrian Thomas. However, 6-foot-10, 300-pound center Reggie Johnson, who will be a junior, has declared early for the NBA Draft. Johnson has not hired an agent and can return to school if he withdraws his name by the May 8 deadline for underclassmen to do so.
"I don't think [the coaching hire] will have any effect on my decision," Johnson told the Sun Sentinel on Thursday, "but I do want to sit down with the next coach and just see where his mind is at as far as what style he wants to play and things like that."

Steves thoughts on Larranaga
My thoughts on the situation:
If new Eichorst can hire Larranaga, this would be a slam-dunk hire.
Forget about Larranaga’s age. The man is a damn good basketball coach.
I’m a big fan of hiring mid-major coaches because, for the most part, they’re great coaches who can teach the game — not just guys who make a living on landing big-time recruits. Under Haith, who brought in prominent recruits such as Durand Scott and DeQuan Jones, the ‘Canes essentially didn’t run an offense. No set plays, just a lot of guys going 1-on-1.
With Larranaga, who has spent the past 14 seasons at George Mason, you’d see an upgrade in regard to in-game coaching and development of players. Plus, like Haith, he’s a strong character guy who’s nice, not controversial.
I’m not sure why Larranaga would want to make the move to Miami at this point (Perhaps he is just leveraging for a better deal from George Mason, as Parrish suggests might be a possibility) Yes, there’s the challenge of coaching in the ACC, and the large raise that he would certainly receive.
But as evidenced with VCU’s Shaka Smart and Richmond’s Chris Mooney, who signed contract extensions to stay at their current schools, the appeal of jumping to a major conference is no longer what it used to be.
You can win at a mid-major and you can do damage in the NCAA Tournament as a mid-major and there’s a lot less pressure than at a major conference school, where these days you often get just three years before you’re fired. And Miami’s not exactly an easy place to coach and win. Does Larranaga, at 61 years old, want to take a job where he might soon be out of work and looking again?
At the same time, as stated above, it would be a new challenge for him after 14 seasons at George Mason.
If the ‘Canes can land him, though, it would be a huge get. Had Larranaga coached this current ‘Canes roster this past season, they would have made the NCAA Tournament. With him, they’d be going to the Big Dance in 2012.

Steve on Aubrey Hill, MustChomp
Miami coach Al Golden took a shot at Gainesville and the Gators earlier this month.
Wednesday night, Florida coach Will Muschamp threw a verbal jab back.
Speaking to the Polk County Gator Club at the Lakeland Civic Center – his first booster club function – Muschamp was asked about luring former Aubrey Hill from the Hurricanes to be one of his assistant coaches.
Hill, a former UF receiver, was UM’s receivers coach the past three years, and was retained by Golden after he became coach.
“He called me more than I called him,” Muschamp reportedly told the crowd of about 1,100. “He wanted to get out of Miami. I don’t blame him.”
UM tight ends coach/national recruiting coordinator Brennan Carroll appeared to respond back to Muschamp with this veiled two-word tweet Thursday: “#ScheduleUs.”
Not sure why Carroll would tweet only that. If you’re going to call someone out, call them out like Golden did the Gators in an SI.com article a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, Carroll’s message was clear.
Former UM AD Kirby Hocutt said on a few occasions that he wanted to play UF on a regular basis, but that the Gators were unwilling. The teams have just one game scheduled against each other — in 2013. UF AD Jeremy Foley’s stance has been that the Gators’ SEC schedule and Florida State are tough enough.
Golden caused a stir with his comment in a SI.com article a few weeks ago. In response to the lack of fans at Hurricanes games last year and at spring games compared to other schools, Golden said, “I know this – we have a better chance of filling our stadium than Gainesville has of putting an international city right outside its city limits.”
You’ve got to love the brashness of Golden and Muschamp. Randy Shannon and Urban Meyer were boring. The two seem like they’ve got a little of Steve Spurrier in them. You can only hope this continues between now and when the teams play in 2013 in Sun Life Stadium.
As for Hill, who at least to me always seemed happy in South Florida, many ‘Canes fans would say they wanted him out of Miami as badly as he apparently wanted to leave.
‘Canes receivers didn’t develop during his tenure with the exception of Leonard Hankerson, who it’s widely known worked out individually with former Dolphins receiver Mark Duper during the summer.
Maybe that was because of the receivers. Maybe it was because of Hill. We’ll have a better idea which based on how UF receivers perform with Hill as their position coach and UM receivers without him this upcoming season.

The University of Miami has a new men's basketball coach -- Jim Larranaga.
A UM official confirmed the hiring to the Sun-Sentinel late Friday morning.
George Mason athletic director Tom O'Connor told the Washington Post on Friday that Larranaga has informed him he is leaving to coach the Hurricanes.
"Jim called me this morning to say that he's accepting the job at Miami," O'Connor told the Post. "We've had good conversations in the last month. I respect Jim as a coach and a person. He's done great things for the university and the basketball program. If this is something he wanted then it's great for Jim. We know have to move on."

Larranaga, 61, flew to Miami on Friday morning to meet with UM officials. Miami had been without a coach since Frank Haith resigned after seven seasons on April 4 to become Missouri's coach. Larranaga has spent the past 14 seasons at George Mason.
Larranaga led the Patriots to a surprising Final Four berth in the 2006 NCAA tournament. His team went 27-7 this season and reached the third round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Ohio State.
CBSSports.com reported Friday that Larranaga's salary at Miami will be worth more than $1 million annually. He made nearly $700,000, including bonuses, this past season. Larranaga was under contract at George Mason through 2015-16.
Under the terms of his current contract, which was negotiated when he received an extension in 2008, Larranaga would incur no financial penalty if he resigned between the end of the season and July 15, the Post reported.
Larranaga and George Mason and been engaged in talks of a contract extension since the end of the season, GMU officials told the Post. One official told the newspaper that Larranaga and O'Connor met on Thursday night.

The new Basketball coach seems to be a good hire but i would have prefered like many others a younger coach. Despite the fact he may have 4 or 5 years left in the tank, if he gets Miami to the NCAA tournament on a regular basis, we will all be happy.
Larranaga is definitely an upgrade over Frank Haith. He will need great assistants to recruit and know Florida well.
Under the terms of his current contract, which was negotiated when he received an extension in 2008, Larranaga would incur no financial penalty if he resigned between the end of the season and July 15, the Post reported.
From the Herald
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING...About our new Basketball coach...
ESPN's Dick Vitale on Twitter: "Miami hit a grand slam in getting Jim Larranaga from George Mason- He is a fierce competitor & has loads of contacts. Great hire!"
CBS and Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis: "Larranaga to Miami is a win win. He gets a better job for more money. UM gets a great coach. Let's not overthink this. Jim is nearing end of his career. Why not take a shot? What does he have to lose? He'll need top assts to get players but he can win there."

You-all Cane hardball rUffians read it here first.
Morris' Miami team will take the series from a ' faltering ' Tar Heel squad.
AU CONTRAIRE to what that six'ER opines ( And I don't give a bloody arse FREAK that he played the game! You-all dig. ).
No, the Hurricanes won't bloody get out the Green and Orange broom and sweep Carolina away this weekend.
However, the Canes are finally starting to come together as a team and as a team, they bloody well know they have to produce starting this weekend.
Yeah, yeah the Tar Heels are insurmountable at home and what not. Yet, I still see Morris's club getting the best of North Carolina this weekend. And no six'ER is going to mess with moi's take. Capice!
By the way, jUst to touch that sixER's EDGY nerves. Yo digs the Pinstrips of Gotham City. U know, the New York Yankees. Always have and always will, bUbba Hurricane rowdies. Say it ain't so.
