Former University of Miami baseball star Gabby Sanchez is one of many former Hurricanes that are doing big things in the Big Leagues this year.
Sanchez, who plays first base for the Marlins, is unique in that he is a home town boy who stayed home and has turned into a hero for fans of both the Hurricanes and the Marlins.
Ryan Braun has set the league on fire this season leading the batting race in several categories. He was recently justly rewarded by signing a $105 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. That will buy a lot of hot dogs and beer!
Last year the Tampa Bay Rays dumped Pat "The Bat" Burrell who glad traveled across Country to the City by the Bay (San Francisco) and proceeded to win his second world series ring with his second team (his first was with the Phillies).
On Tuesday night I had the opportunity to attend the Marlins game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Sun Life Stadium. The typical crowd on hand was small yet very vocal and invested in The Fish.
The Marlins went down 1-2-3 in the first and batting fourth in the lineup for the Marlins Sanchez came to bat to leadoff the second inning. He proceeded to crush the ball deep over the left field fence to tie the game a 1-1 after the Dodgers had taken the early lead in the first inning.
The Marlins tied the game again at 2-2 just two innings later with Sanchez once again at the plate. After a single by SS Hanley Ramirez the Marlins' first baseman came to bat. The former Hurricane hit a slow roller to third base as Hanley quickly advanced to second.
Except Ramirez had no intention of stopping there.
Hanley rounded second and turned towards third at full tilt and slid in under a high throw that eluded the Dodger third baseman. With the entire Dodger infield looking on in disbelief and the stadium erupting in excitement Ramirez scored easily and without even a throw to the plate.
The Marlins then took the lead for good later in the game on a two-run single by RF Mike Stanton and eventually won the game 4-2.
Sanchez, a former Hurricane star and now a hometown hero, and his Marlins teammates had earned another victory for the good guys.
Yeah. Nice pics Soup. The clean up crews must have an easy time after those games

Posted by: SinisterCane | April 27, 2011 at 07:19 AM
OK, I'm gonna say this OUT LOUD.
The building of the new stadium in central Miami at the old Orange Bowl site will turn out to be the biggest waste of $$$ in the history of sports.
I've been a Marlins fan since the team was founded in 1993. It is a damn shame the crowds that turn out to watch this team. A team that is playing well and winning yet still nobody shows.
When I stay in Fort Lauderdale I can be at the Sun Life Stadium in less than 30 minutes easily and park on site for $10.
U think I'm gonna be excited to drive another hour in rush hour traffic to go to the new stadium in central Miami and have nowhere to park and have to drive back another hour to get back to the 954?
Not so much...

Larranaga hits the ground running
Jim Larranaga had a lengthy to-do list when he accepted the University of Miami basketball coaching job last Friday, and he is getting through it slowly, but surely, with a few breaks for dinners at Havana Harry’s and Titanic:
1. Meet with Hurricane players and begin to win them over. Check.
Larranaga met with the team Friday night and worked players out Saturday through Wednesday.
“His track record speaks for itself, and after meeting him, we see he’s an all-around great guy, charismatic, full of energy, and that’s contagious,” said junior guard/forward DeQuan Jones. “What I like is that he’s enthusiastic and not afraid to show it.”
2. Convince sophomore center Reggie Johnson to remove his name from the NBA Draft before May 8 and stay in school. Working on it.
Larranaga flew to Greensboro, N.C., on Easter Sunday and drove to Winston-Salem to meet with Johnson and his mother at their home. He and Johnson wound up on the same flight back to Miami, so they chatted some more. The coach also said he is consulting with his NBA friends, including Stu Jackson, to help Johnson make an educated decision.
“We had a wonderful visit at his house,” Larranaga said Wednesday. “I told him the vision I have for the team, and for him, told him stories of former players I helped reach their goals. Our talks have gone very well so far. He has a big decision ahead.”
3. Hire a staff. Almost done. “Coach L” invited his three assistants from George Mason to join him, and all three are expected to be hired in the coming days.
His lead assistant would be Chris Caputo, known for his meticulous scouting reports and success on the recruiting trail.
When the Patriots made their magical run to the 2006 Final Four, Caputo’s pregame reports helped prepare players to knock off Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut. Caputo attended Archbishop Molloy High School in New York, which is Larranaga’s alma mater, and has worked with Larranaga for nine years.
The other two assistants expected to follow Larranaga are Eric Konkol and Michael Huger, who played for Larranaga at Bowling Green.
Larranaga also agreed to meet with retired NBA guard Kenny Anderson, an Archbishop Molloy grad and Miami resident, on Friday, but said the conversation is just exploratory. “I’ve known Kenny since he was in eighth grade. He called, so we’re going to meet and chat.”
4. Convince North Carolina-based recruit Bishop Daniels, who is waffling, to honor the commitment he made to former coach Frank Haith. Working on it.
Larranaga is flying to Raleigh Wednesday night to meet with Daniels and his family. He already spoke to them by phone.
5. Energize the student body. In progress. “Eric [Swoopes] just called to tell me he was walking to class and saw Coach L and his staff … around campus, introducing themselves to students and shaking hands,” Jones said. “He’s recruiting everyone to jump on board.”

Soup it was the worst decision the city of Miami every made. Braman knew it and will make those ridiculous Miami politicians pay as long as he still has a heartbeat. I am just hoping maybe some day it will be the home of the canes again because I think the max seating is 37,000, which would be perfect for the canes! May never happen but I can dream!

Last night Tampa got a little lucky and the game turned their way. I look for the Pens to win game 7 in Pittsburgh.
Posted by: SOUP | April 26, 2011 at 03:20 PM
Well you probably saw it better than I did as I watch online. What I think I am seeing from the Pens is that they know they don't have the firepower with Crosby and Malkin and even Cooke out and are trying to do too much like Letang. I think he is caught up in trying to be too much of a offensive D-man right now. And if by lucky you mean leaving Downie by himself in front of the net, for that go ahead goal - that was a breakdown on our D, funky or not. When they struggle on D, Fleury tries to do too much and so it goes. Everyone needs to stick to the script. And Kovalev's age is showing. But I agree, I do like our coach and he did a great job getting them into the playoffs

CGNC...what I meant was the Pittsburgh "system". Their players know exactly where to be in the offensive zone and control the puck and set up many more good scoring chances.
Tampa is more of a dump and scramble team and Pitt is much more precise passing and puck control oriented. I like the Bolts they are young and have good leadership but are still a year away from being a really good team.
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 10:48 AM
And I thought Rays attendance was bad
Still shocked that the Fish have a new stadium that doesn't cap out at 20,000 seats at the most ... they should build a minor league sized facility for them
What a colossal waste of money, my God

You clearly haven't driven by the new stadium (at least recently). There is an ASTRONIMICAL amount of parking built surrounding the stadium. It will easily accommodate all visitors.
The traffic argument might be valid, but the parking one... not so much.

Ryan Braun was HBP in the 5th inning today breaking the Brewers team record for consecutive games reaching base to start a season(24)
The previous record was set 28 years ago by Robin Yount
Kind of a painful way to set the record
Ryan has had a great start to the 2011 season .364(7th) 9 HRs(1st) 21 RBIs(2nd)

UM 0 - USF 0 after one inning at ARP at MLF.
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 06:18 PM
USF with bases loaded, no outs in the top of the second after three straight singles.
Pop out to LF then a hard grounder to second base is bobbled and gets the runner at 2nd but a run scores, with two outs now.
Pop out to SS is the third out: UM 0 - USF 1
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 06:26 PM
Another small crowd tonight, this time at ARP. I know it's mid-week and against USF with FSU coming to town this weekend but could it be that it is the gas prices keeping people home?
USF 1, UM 0 going to the bottom of the third.
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 06:37 PM
SOUP Martinez not playing...Is he injured?
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | April 27, 2011 at 06:48 PM
Six's boy Fieger singles to lead off the inning.
Perez pops out while BUNTING (Six goes crazy)!
A fly out, a walk and a flyout to LF and it is still USF 1, UM 0 after three innings.
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 06:48 PM
Monty...I have not heard that Martinez is injured, they may just be resting him against USF for the FSU series?

Canes at bat in the bottom of the sixth now all tied up at 2-2 after a solo HR by USF.
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 07:22 PM
Canes have three on with no outs in the sixth.
Michael Broad at bat and he...hold it...HOLD IT...HITS A GRAND SLAM!
UM 6, USF 2
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 07:30 PM
Canes with runners on first and third, one out, pitching change for USF.
A little late don't U think?
Another hit, a steal of third and a throwing error on USF.
UM 8 - USF 2
Posted by: SOUP | April 27, 2011 at 07:41 PM
Canes with runners on first and third, still just one out, Melendres at the dish.
Melendres lines a double to CF that plates another run and puts runners at 2nd and 3rd.
A fielder's choice scores another run for the Canes with the out at first.
A wild pitch scores another run for Miami.
Six's boy Fieger lines double off the wall in DEEP LF, SIX feet shy of a HR.
UM 11, USF 2

Six the Pens have lost too much offensive fire power with the injuries and TB is playing their asses off! 0-3 on the power play, outshooting TB 17-8 but losing 1-0 does not bode for a good outcome for my Pens.

In an article in canesport, they offered LB Nick Dawson and according to him it's an offer he had waited on all his life but list Louisville and I think Clemson as his top schools even after the Canes offered. I'd just rather These kids skip the B.S. lines about what there dream school is and when they get that offer, they have a but.If it's your dam dream school what are you waiting on. I could understand, if they said i've always liked them. Hell I dream about Brooke Burke, do you think I'd let that chance slip by, NOT!

Still not happy with those lightning announcers.....I think i will send them a case of red bull before the next series!

Congrats to the Bolts and their fans on here. Still proud of the Pens making the playoffs and taking it to a game 7 without 3 of their top players even though their powerplay was painful to watch (head desk, head desk). I would rather they go out in the first and rest and get healthy for next season then get banged up in Round 2 which I don't think they would have come out of.
Posted by: CGNC | April 28, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Six - LOL that's good. Actually Crosby (45 games) has been out longer than Malkin (34 games)
and Roly is the star in that series for the Bolts; without him the banged up Pens would have sent them home. Must be something in that guy's Bengay! He is 41!

PLEASE don't attend one of the ballgames this weekend. Serious!
Morris' hardball 9 needs as much POSITIVE VIBES going into this A.C.C. series.
And can do without some... I played the game, so I can dizz on the Canes... DOUBTING six'ER in the grandstands, Eh.
Now, on the other hand. I've been bloody giving Miami baseball some good vibrations the past two weeks and lo and behold, they are playing some decent ball. Go figure.
Posted by: macjones | April 28, 2011 at 12:59 PM
If you score on 5-5, but not on 5-4 when you have more people on the ice, theres a problem. If that happens, GO BACK TO THE 5-5 OFFENSE
Though to be fair, to say they score more in 5-5, they SHOULD. There's about 45+ more minutes of 5-5 per game than 5-4
Posted by: Loco | April 28, 2011 at 01:00 PM
Loco - ouch - my ears - are you yelling at me???? :-D Every Pens fan around knows there is a problem with the powerplay. I am sure they know it too. They need to fix it over the offseason

CGNC - Pens 4th line were playing like madmen last night
Roloson definitely was in another zone for the series when he turned on the switch ... great move by Stevie Y to bring him in by trading away Ty Wishart for him
Like I said, with Stevie Y at the helm and his hand picked James Bond bad guy looking head coach Boucher - Bolts are gonna make some noise

Canechic - I can't watch the Bolts broadcasters, I try and find the broadcast of the opposing team instead .. last night, I was watching the Pens feed
Have you ever listened to the Bolts radio guys? Dave Mishkin and Phil Esposito?
Espo forgets he's on the radio probably 80% of the time with some of the stuff he says, out of place, he has no inner monologue at times, he really does just say what he thinks out loud
As for Mishkin, that dude is straight f*cking nuts on the air. He yells like you wouldn't believe .. and not just yell, it's like something out of a superhero movie where their special power is yelling and being able to break glass/bring down buildings/deafen people to the point of blood coming out of their ears
Here's just a sample clip, might need to turn it up a little ..

Coach L was able to keep Bishop Daniels to his LOI
That is a tremendous job because Bishop is one hell of a basketball player
I admit I thought it was shaky at best that he would stay here at Miami
Coach L. is stepping in and TCB......nice job

Temporary Rat location to imitate original
Posted by Jonathan Borge on Apr 28, 2011 | Leave a Comment
Marking the initial stage of construction towards a new $20 million Student Activities Center, the Rathskeller will officially close its doors on Friday. Although the 38-year UM hallmark will reopen at its current location in June of 2013, the restaurant will be temporarily moved to what is now Sbarro in the University Center.
Over the summer, university administrators will work to transition Sbarro into a darker, bar-like atmosphere that emulates the historic Rat.
Outdoor gliders will be relocated to the UC Patio, the Pan-Hellenic Building and other campus locations. For safety and security measures, a majority of memorabilia will be transported and stored off-campus. Additionally, all students currently employed at the restaurant have been guaranteed their jobs next fall and will be given priority before new students are hired.
“We’re doing everything to preserve the Rat brand,” said Patricia Whitely, vice president for student affairs. “There’s no way we can absolutely design it to look perfect like the Rat, but we are going to do some design enhancements in Sbarro, recognizing that we do have some limitations on what we could potentially offer for food.”
The Sbarro location does not have an indoor kitchen grill, raising uncertainty over which menu items will return. This week, consultants from Brailsford & Dunlavey, a program management firm specializing in facility planning, met with university administrators to detail the logistics of this move.
“We’re very optimistic that we’re going to be able to continue a lot of the Rathskeller menu items,” said Dan Westbrook, director of the University Center. “We think that they came up with a pretty efficient way to maybe do a lot of the things that we wanted to do, and the students wanted to do.”
According to Richard Walker, associate vice president for student affairs, ideas for the space capacity and furniture inside the temporary location are still being developed. However, there has been discussion of the potential for couches and soft seating to maximize student comfort. Liquor licenses are being renewed and the temporary location will be able to serve beer and wine.
The Rathskeller Advisory Board (RAB), a student run organization in charge of programming for the Rat, will decide what events must be canceled or modified.
“There are many events that we will not be physically able to do in the vicinity of Sbarro,” said Randa Obid, chair of RAB. “We will probably be able to only put on more passive programming such as happy hour, bands outside on the patio, and pub trivia.”
Rumors of the restaurant’s closing circled for years, but the official statement was made April 6, when the university announced the construction of the new Student Activities Center.
“The Rat will definitely not have the same feeling. Basically, it’s going to suck,” said Mouriel Boucher, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences. “But, I’m really looking forward to this new Student Activities Center and the new Rat. So, this whole move to Sbarro just means that it’s one step closer to the awesome, new and improved Rat.”
Renovations to the University Center will also take place this summer. Hurricane resistant glass will be installed, the info desk will be remodeled and the main staircase will be redesigned. A new pool deck will be constructed and the first and second floor lounges will also be remodeled with new flooring, lighting and furniture.
The temporary location of the Rathskeller is set to open August 17.

YES, I just sent U a tweet!
The Canespace Twitter membership drive is going well. I also noticed that U added to the number of people we are following (150) which is great. I checked them all and deleted only 2 of them that were not OK.
RT do not auto post to the blog top left column. U have to copy/paste and credit the source. See some of the Tweets I just posted to the account to get the format.
Thanks again for your help and support!

Sebastian57 - Rays brought the hit sticks today for the 1st game of the double header
It's the magic of Kotchman
You wouldn't believe the hatred a lot of stat people (who are pro-Dan Johnson) have for Kotchman
I have no idea why. Since he was brought up, the Rays have been winning - they're going to be 12-2 after this game right now
He just now struck out today for the 1st time as a Ray - first time in over 28 at bats
What those people see in Dan Johnson, is beyond me. You know where Dan Johnson is among all Rays hitters? 3rd from last ... the other 2 behind Dan Johnson - Manny Ramirez and Longo
Johnson is killin it with a .143 average
Rays mantra is pitching, defense = run prevention. Dan doesn't bring anything close to the table that Kotch does as a defensive 1Baseman ... a guy that was 2nd in the AL in Fielding % in 2008, 1st in the NL in Fielding % in 2009, 1st in the AL in Fielding % in 2010, is currently 1st in the AL in Fielding % ... set the MLB individual record for consecutive chances without an error at 2,003 chances - the first time he had an error was 2 years apart from the last time he had an error

I honestly thought he was going to be given his release and be on his way
Add him with `Quan and TMJ and we will see the `Canes on top 10 dunks alot next season
Thats a heck of alot of vert between those 3 guys right there.....Yikes!!!!!

Six,
About the only way I would want DJ at the plate is in a late game situation when its HR or nothing. Thats about all hes good for
I just saw the score for today...15-3????
Am I also seeing the stat correct that Zo has 8 RBIs?? WOW!!!!
Now lets just get the Rays some sort of catcher and they might have a chance. Even Damon has picked it up since Manny left the team
Im going to enjoy this while I can because JoMa is about to put the hot bats down when Longo gets back

I've got Hank, Harris, Bailey and then Franklin.
Only Hank or Harris have a shot at the first round IMHO.

Baseball Disaster: Yanks Leak 21,000 Ticket Holders' Personal Info
It looks like either hundreds or thousands (the info varies) of Yanks fans got more than they bargained for when they checked email Monday evening. Attached to a routine newsletter emailed by a Yanks ticket rep was a little something extra--a spreadsheet titled “STL Homestand Newsletter (042511).” Open the spreadsheet and presto: the account numbers, names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, seat numbers, and ticket page codes of exactly 21,466 non-premium season ticket holders (the majority of stadium seats, in other words).
The no doubt mortified rep--a Microsoft Outlook user--quickly attempted to “recall” the email, but failed, since that feature only works if both sender and receiver use Microsoft's Office email client.
The New York Yankees quickly apologized for the accidental info breach in a statement released to the press and distributed to ticket holders:
Please note, immediately upon learning of the accidental attachment of the internal spreadsheet, remedial measures were undertaken so as to assure that a similar incident could not happen again. The Yankees deeply regret this incident, and any inconvenience that it might cause.
The statement also stresses that "no other information was included" in the spreadsheet, and specified that no "birth dates, social security numbers, credit card data, banking data, or any other personal or financial information" were compromised.
(More on TIME.com: Some Of the Data Lost in Amazon's Cloud Outage is Gone Forever)
While sites like Deadspin report the email was distributed to "thousands," the New York Yankees claim it was in fact sent to "several hundred"--a bit less onerous, but given the file's gone every which way since, not much.
