Your University of Miami Hurricanes put up a five spot in the first inning and then managed to keep their foot firmly on the gas pedal as they easily drove away from and beat the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 6-2 on a cool, dreary Friday night in Charlottesville.
Miami was facing the nation’s top-ranked team and one of the Country's best pitchers for the second time this season (the Canes lost to Hudson Randall and the No. 1 ranked Florida Gators earlier this season) and this time the good guys came out on top in the crucial ACC match-up.
This time out the Hurricanes were facing Virginia pitcher Danny Hultzen, who had not allowed more than one run in the first inning all season. Hultzen came into the Friday the 13th game leading the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference in several statistical categories.
But the Hurricanes were having none of that as they turned the first inning into a gruesome horror show for the Cavalier's hard throwing hurler.
Miami improved their season record to 32-16 and also moved to 17-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. On Friday night the Hurricane hard ballers were clearly NOT intimimidated by the Cavaliers, the sold out crowd or the significance of this critical conference series on the road.
The Hurricanes speedy lead-off hitter Zeke "Beep-Beep" DeVoss started the game off with a double and later scored on an error when Virginia catcher John Hicks threw the ball into center field in a failed attempt to get Miami's Rony Rodriguez stealing second.
The wild throw over the head and out-stretched arms of the UVA second baseman allowed Rodriguez to take second while DeVoss scored easily from third to stake Miami to the early 1-0 lead.
UM kept pounding the ball in the first as Harold "H-Mart" Martinez broke out of his recent slump and drove in Rodriguez with a sharp single to right. The Hurricanes then quickly stretched out to a three-run lead courtesy of a Dale "Don't Call Me Mariah" Carey, who hit a hard grounder to short that led to the second costly Cavalier error of the inning as it allowed Martinez to score on the play.
Before Virginia could figure out what was happening Miami led 5-0 and the game was basically over due to the fact that Miami's had their own ace in pitcher Brad "B-Rad" Radziewski in perfect form and ready to roll from the bump.
Virginia (43-6, 20-5 ACC) cut into Miami's lead in the fourth inning when the Cavaliers lead-off hitter doubled, and then two batters later was driven in with a double to left that made the score 5-1.
The Cavs made it 5-2 later that inning but that was all the runs they could manufacture against B-Rad and the Canes solid and efficient bullpen.
Radziewski was replaced in the eighth by Travis "No Relation To Lamar" Miller who threw 2 innings in relief and allowing just two hits. Miami Killian product Sam "Smokey" Robinson came in to get the final out and earned his sixth save of the season.
The Canes will face the Cavs again Saturday at Noon in the “ACC Game of the Week” televised on Fox Sports. Miami will throw Eric Whaley (7-3, 2.99 ERA) while Virginia will toss Tyler Wilson (5-0, 2.85 ERA) in a match-up of righties after Friday's contest featured lefties for both teams.
Live stats for the game will be provided through Game Tracker at HurricaneSports.com. Fans can also join the live chat, provided by Cover It Live, by visiting HurricaneSports.com as well.

So who committed the errors to cost them the chance at the sweep? Was it the SS? I bet it was the SS.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | May 14, 2011 at 03:16 PM
OGV...no it was DeVoss, who is playing 2nd base (in place of earlyseason starter Michael Broad) but used to play CF.
The Roadrunner had 2 errors today.

The Good, the Bad and the U-gly is how I chalk up Miami, F-L-A Hurricane baseball this season.
The Good. Morris has a decent club to compete with most Top 15 teams. But just aren't quite good enough to steal a few games, here and there. Today's game was a WINNABLE game for Miami. But that's neither here or there now.
The Bad. Oh how those errors come back to haunt a diamond nine, Eh. From perusing the boxscores and game stories this season, that's been the absolute difference in Miami winning at least FIVE more games in 2011.
Now, for the U-gly. Morris' club won't make the College World Series this season, again. Say it ain't so.
Je'ccuse of catching the NEGATIVE virUS OF U-know-who. oUch! But I'm only being a balanced-minded realist.
Cane horde. If any particular club ain't corrected mental lapses and or fielding errors this late in the season, then it's a safe bet to say said team won't reach Omaha this season.
Still, reaching in the bloody vast cold dark of the void, I wouldn't mind watching Miami reach the Super Regionals. Games on ESPN, ESPN-2 or espnU anyone.
By the way, the powers that be overseeing the A.C.C. need to get a few more games on FOXSPORTS. Chit, the A.C.C. is the best conference in the country, arguably speaking.

Zeke committed 2 errors that led to both of the unearned runs
Fieger had the other error but it didnt cost a run

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | May 14, 2011 at 03:16 PM
Fieger-sp. at the Hot Corner with one and DeVoss with two COSTLY turnovers at 2nd.
Those errors were basically the difference in the game.
The way the kid for Virginia was pitching today, Miami had to have no more than one error.
Tomorrow the Hurricanes go for the series win. 2 bad it's not on telly, eh.
Posted by: macjones de Albuquerque | May 14, 2011 at 03:31 PM
The fielding did let the `Canes down today but Wilson(Cavs starting pitcher)kept the hitters off balance and reaching for pitches all day long
He pitched a damn good game and stayed ahead of the hitters all day long
What I did question just a bit was with the slick infield grass, why we didnt see more bunt attempts early in the game to try and rattle Wilson and get him off his game
But hey the games over and the `Canes still have a chance to take the series before heading back to C.G. to finish out the regular season
Posted by: Sebastian | May 14, 2011 at 03:38 PM
Marlins win 1-0
So lets break it down
`Canes will get to Omaha
Rays v Marlins in the World Series

Seb,
If I have one real issue w/ Morris, it's the lack of aggressive use of this team's speed. Bunting and stolen bases are the best counter to a team (like this one) that swings and misses so often. The pitching staff does it's job nearly every weekend-how many games have we lost by 1 or 2 runs?
The good news is that all 4 starting pitchers return next year, and the lack of performance of some key juniors (like Harold) may lead to a real contender next season. But I must confess I'm a little tired of waiting for next year.
On the other hand, a win tomorrow and a sweep of the Dukies, and who knows how far this team could go? I just see no reason for a fan to be negative. We have no control of anything, and our opinions are basically meaningless. The only reason I follow these teams is to enjoy the sports.
I'm an alumnus of a school that has celebrated 9 national championships in my 2 favorite sports, since I started college in 1981. Can I really complain?

There IT is right there!
Posted by: SOUP | May 14, 2011 at 05:34 PM
With the slippery condition the infield grass was in I thought for sure the `Canes would try and lay down a few bunts to try to get on base and then let the speed take over from there
I was noticing that Wilson was falling off to the 1st base side of the mound and the 3rd baseman wasnt really playing that close in
They fought until the very end but came up short
Now let hope EJ comes out and has a big showing for the pitching staff tommorrow
EJ is 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA in ACC play this year

But I must confess I'm a little tired of waiting for next year.
Posted by: Mephistopheles | May 14, 2011 at 05:32 PM
This is what I've been saying for a while now .. but I'm considered a pessimist by a select few b/c of it due to the fact that I expand on my tired of waiting each .. year .. again
Can't really blame Roadrunner for the boots today at 2B - kid probably hasn't played infield since he was a SS at Astronaut HS a couple of years ago .. and then to throw him out there like that in a crucial series
Just like in '09 when Ryan Jackson and #3 also said that they need to play more small ball and "run rabbit run" - well, where is it?
Small ball = fundamentals at their finest ... that's why you'd see the Asian countries do well during the World Baseball Classic - b/c they just hammer the hell out of the fundamentals
Posted by: Six | May 14, 2011 at 08:41 PM
86 - either 4 or 5 are
I know both Robinsons are (Sam, Zach) .. Daniel Miranda is .. Rudman and Abrams are

The `Canes HAVE to win these next 4 games at home and hope for a little help to get a decent seeding in the ACC tournament
Do some decent damage in the ACC tournament and hosting a regional will be a no doubter
As a matter of fact im willing to say the `Canes will be hosting as long as they sweep these upcoming 4 games
Posted by: Sebastian | May 15, 2011 at 01:58 PM
Close but no cigar for the Canes? Well at the very least they showed some fight and didn't quit in either close game yesterday or today.
Rays trailing O's 3-1 early.
Fish trailing Nats 6-2 early.
4 tied at -12 at the TPC.
#48 leading at Dover.

Rays catchers are both awful at setting up behind the plate (Jaso, Shoppach)
Can't tell you how many would be strikes are called balls simply b/c of their positioning - the umps take notice of that
It's really really bad when Brian Anderson up in the booth is trying to be nice about how much the Rays catchers suck at that, all the while gritting his teeth
You can tell he wants to put them on blast
