Since arriving on the campus of the University of Miami earlier this Summer, Gionni Paul has been one of the most talked about recruits of the 2011 class.
Paul, who attended Lakeland Kathleen High School, has been described by UM Head Coach Al Golden and many others as a speedy, athletic, aggressive and fiercely competitive player with a non-stop motor.
According to those who have seeen some of the off-season drills and attended a few of the player-only workouts and practices at UM's Greentree Field this Summer, Gionni has consistently led his teammates in various running drills.
Paul initially was going to attend Arizona State University. That is until new Hurricane head coach Al Golden arrived at Miami and began an all out recruiting press on this talented Central Florida prospect.
Here is a brief history of the recruiting battle between the UM and ASU that led to Paul becoming a Miami Hurricane:
December 9, 2010 – Commits to Arizona State and former University of Miami Coach Dennis Erickson.
January 28, 2011 – De-commits from ASU and commits to The University of Miami and Hurricane Head Coach Al Golden.
I recently had the chance talk to Paul who is listed at 6’0 and 230 pounds on the UM roster and who told me that he plans to play at one of the outside linebacker positions at Miami.
Here are five questions with UM Freshman LB Gionni Paul:
Q: What made you change your decision from Arizona State to The University of Miami?
A: “Well the fact that coach golden is a wonderful coach, I did my research and love what he did at temple. He has a lot of energy, love for the game and I would love to have a coach like that. Coach D (D’Onofrio) and Coach Barrow made a big impact along with the greatest trainer in the world (coach) Swasey.”
Q: What was your first impression of Coach Golden?
A: “My first impression was that he’s a sharp guy that is organized and love’s the game of football.”
Q: What was different about Coach Golden compared to other college coaches?
A: “He is truthful and he’s not going to hand you nothing. He’s going to push you to be a student athlete and be young men that are going to be well conditioned and know the meaning of family.”
Q: What are your freshman season goals at the University of Miami?
A: “My freshman goals are to help the team out every way possible on and off the field. I want to be a leader, compete for a starting job, get ACC freshman of the year, lead the conference in tackles, tackles for loss, and in sacks.”
Q: I know a lot of hurricane fans are excited about your potential and excitement you bring to the game. Is there anything you would like to tell the Miami Hurricane fans?
A: “Yes, that #36 is going to find any way to get on the field and that there’s no pity in Hurricane city. We’re going to bring a new swagger to the game. We’re going to bounce around and teach people the true meaning of the Golden Age.”
As Brennan Carroll says, “Welcome to the U!”

This year’s Hurricanes ready to overachieve
"It wasn’t like this in the old days, media members treating the Miami Hurricanes like, well, any other hum-drum Atlantic Coast Conference football team.
The ACC had players from Florida State and Miami speaking at the same time during the ACC Football Kickoff on Sunday, and most journalists chose the nationally touted Seminoles and quarterback EJ Manuel to gush about.
“No problem’’ was the attitude reflected by Canes center Tyler Horn and linebacker Sean Spence when asked how much it mattered that no one was expected to pick Miami to win the ACC title.
“I hope they expect nothing from us so we can go out there and show them how good we are,’’ senior Horn said. “I hope they have us last. We can make them eat crow by the end of the year.’’
The Hurricanes, coming off a 7-6 season that ended with losses against Virginia Tech, USF and Notre Dame in the Sun Bowl, begin the season on Labor Day night (Sept. 5) at Maryland. The prime-time showdown will pit the leagues two new coaches — UM’s Al Golden and Maryland’s Randy Edsall — in what ACC commissioner John Swofford is billing as an intriguing matchup.
“They’re two programs that are really important to our league that have had significant successes in the past and hopefully will again,’’ Swofford said. “And it’s so seldom you have the opportunity to showcase two new coaches playing against each other right off the bat — two potentially really quality programs that are important to our league.’’
Potential is not enough for the Hurricanes.
They want it now, and players such as Horn and Spence have one last chance to get it done in a league in which they have neither won nor advanced to the title game since joining in 2004.
“Just sit back and watch,’’ Horn said. “The more people who doubt us, the better. We’re going to try to prove them wrong. Doubt us now.”
The Hurricanes begin practice Aug. 6 at Greentree Field. Most practices will be in the morning, including when the season begins."

When do single game tickets go on sale? I want to purchase my tickets for OSU as soon as possible.
Posted by: raizecane | July 25, 2011 at 01:02 PM
FROM FOOTBALL SCOOP.COM:
This season, if a player taunts an opponent on his way to a touchdown, the play will be nullified. In other words, there's no room for salutes, flips, and high stepping. In short, no trying to pay homage to Deion.
So asked for his thoughts, (Baylor Coach) Art Briles responded, "When Edwin Moses ran the hurdles, he wasn't low-stepping at the finish line."
FYI: The new rule will assess a penalty from the spot of the foul.
Our prediction: Kirk Herbstreit will lose it on on College Game Day a week after some officiating crew blows a ridiculously subjective call that costs a team a ball game. Herbstreits' rant will become a YouTube sensation. We're talking, Herbstreit will be seriously agitated and rip the NCAA. By the post-season, the NCAA will get rid of the penalty.
Posted by: SOUP | July 25, 2011 at 01:04 PM
Soup - I think that is a stupid azz penalty (rule). I mean a DB intercepts that ball in the endzone, take off for 106 yards with nobody within 30 yards of him and they take the 6 away because he high steps it with 3 yards left?
And I can assure you, the scenario you mentioned above will happen. Some team is gonna lose a huge game because of that rule.
I can see a coach telling his players they need to score 60 early on so if they do score again, they can dance there way into the endzone just to piss off the NCAA.

I think the celebration rule leaves way too much room for interpretation and will definitely cost a team or two this year. Its ridiculous and with our history of ending up on the wrong side of referees' interpretaions, I fear that one of those teams will be us. They were already taking away TD's from us last year even without this rule.

our defense is going to take it back to the old-school Canes defense you're used to seeing with Spence QB'ng the entire thing. I expect him and Big Boom to carry the load the entire year and even bail our inconsistent offense a few times.
ground game...teams are gonna stack the box and we'll live and die with our jekyll & hyde QB's and our receivers that have one too many drops.
i am optimistic we will definitely improve, just not enough because it takes about 2 years to flush out the garbage the previous regime left behind and get the cohesiveness necessary to play at a championship level.
just my humble opinion :)

Golden talking success
PINEHURST, N.C. — After taking over Temple's head-coaching position five years ago, Al Golden had a revelation that may have completely altered his career, and shortened his path to Miami.
For about a quarter-century across five coaching regimes, the Owls were mired in abject dispair. Losing seasons were the norm, bowl appearances didn't exist.
So, in an effort to change their culture, Golden sought an easy solution.
"If you're at Temple and you go 0-12 and you sit there and continue to recruit the same way they did for 30 years, which is basically taking whatever was left over on the East Coast, then nothing would ever change," Golden said. "We ended up changing the paradigm."
It's the exact plan he has for Miami.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text alerts: Get South Florida sports news on your phone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recruiting was the trick at Temple. Bring in better-qualified, more-talented players and the chances of the team's success dramatically increased. After taking the Owls to their first bowl in 30 seasons in 2009, he finished his last two in Philadelphia going 17-8.
At UM, where Golden became head coach in December following Randy Shannon's departure, the key hinges on team attitude, purpose and direction.
According to one Hurricanes player, changes along those lines have begun taking shape.
"The attitude of the team is a complete 180 from what it was last year," UM center Tyler Horn said during this weekend's ACC Kickoff at Pinehurst Resort.
These days, the buzzwords around Coral Gables are "accountability" and "ownership." In the past, they may have lost their influence.
Not anymore, Horn said.
"[We're] more hard-working and keeping ourselves accountable," Horn said. "[It's] making sure you get your job done. That it's on you to make your block or catch the football; not no one else's fault. That's really been instilled in our program."
The ACC media has apparently bought in. On Monday, the conference announced that reporters attending the Kickoff selected UM to finish second in the Coastal Division to Virginia Tech. With most of the division deemed down this season, many believe the Hokies will run away with the division. But several also believe the Hurricanes will have a say in how things shake out.
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson believes it is possible for Golden to make the Hurricanes one of the conference's best teams in the near future. He coached against Golden's Temple program while he was at Navy several years ago.
""The job he did there was tremendous. He brought them back from the dead almost," Johnson said. "I'm sure they're going to be a tough team to play."
Another factor in Temple's reversal was the players themselves, Golden said. Some in the group that earned the bowl berth in 2009 had gone 1-11 in a previous season. After that happened, and the players realized Golden was in charge, they convinced themselves the past had to be buried.
Soon enough, the easy-to-fix miscues and poorly timed penalties the players had been committing went away. Scoring increased, and defense got more firm, more stout. Success had begun surrounding his program.
"There's a correlation between the things causing you to lose and winning," Golden said. "That's what we're trying to get these kids here to realize."

Does anyone else's stomach turn whenever they drive by the old OB site and see that new Flight of the Navigator-like looking thing the Marlins are gonna call home next year?
Ugh.

Again I want to go on record and say BASHING players on the team whether U feel righted or not is WRONG....Having said that....U tht Bash Jacory are ALL IDIOTS....Obviously U knw NOTHING....YES Jacory messed up alot but lets not forget:
1. He had a coach who was bent on putting him in bad positions and plays(oh he could've audibled, NO, he has to do as told bottomline call the play)
2. He had recievers who dropped more passes than the law should allow
3. He had recivers running the wrong routes
4. He may have had some of his best recievers being held out of games for tht DogHouse BS tht Shannon was pulln
Ultimately NONE of U really knw wht the kids deal was and to hang him out to dry like Football is all he should ever talk about is BS....GET A LIFE....I guess all U guys talk about is your work all day too huh yea thght not he is a kid and kids do kid things get over it Leave the Kid alone cuz for the most part U will be chewin his jock strap when he:
1. Breaks U passing records
2. Throws Less Ints
3. Gets Invited to the Heisman Deal
4. Actually gets drafted
ps....his line sucked too there are a lot of variables I jus love how U fans blame the world on one kids shoulders....smh Pieonary at its best..
RCCF(really hates lack-luster fans)and Dorsey's arm was NO BETTER than Jacory's Dorsey jus had better players....AND Jacory is jus as good a leader as Dorsey whether you like it or NOT....12% and if U think Im wrong Slap Yourself...
Posted by: RCCF | July 26, 2011 at 01:12 AM
sorry I jus find it really WACK tht U guys do tht....leave it the U fans to bury a kid worst than his own critics....why have haters when U got fans....all I ask for the sanity of the group is be honest with U and tell yourself HONESTLY Jacory Did NOT do all tht by himself...and even if couldn't remember last night there is a phrase I grew up knowing and I am MORE than sure U did too....
"there is a time and place for everyting and its called College"....now if he is supposed jus be football football football where is his time to be a student and enjoy college stop living vicariously thru ppl and U will see the real picture the boiz are having fun and will be winning more tht is all....
RCCF (hate to have to be like tht but its almost yearly tht U guys show up and show out with this BS) Leave the Boy Alone

From PBP
•Golden expects several freshmen to play right away, including linebackers Eddie Johnson and Gionni Paul, receiver/kick returner Phillip Dorsett, defensive end Anthony Chickillo and defensive backs Thomas Finnie, Dallas Crawford and Thurston Armbrister.
"Those guys will have an impact," Golden said.

Carlos - I drove by there last month and was like "WTF is that"? and then realized that is where some of the best games ever took place.
The only good thing about that is that I wont have to look at that dirt in Sun Life stadium for much longer.

GRIDIRON KINGS: Johnson, Burgess and Brown in the national spotlightThey came from California, Ohio, Texas, Maryland and some 25 other states to showcase their tremendous football talents. They were rising seniors who have captured the attention of nearly every major college in America. Welcome to the competitive world of Champion Gridiron Kings.
For three days, elite football players get together to go over drills, get interviewed, have numerous photos taken and speak to just about every recruiting analyst and reporter who wanted to find out what it’s like to be one of the best in the nation.
For three University of Miami bound student/athletes, it was an opportunity to show why the Hurricanes are indeed on the way back. Randy “Duke” Johnson, Keith “Bam” Brown and James Burgess Jr. all spent their time at Disney’s Wide World of Sports dominating and making plays.
On offense, Johnson dazzled from his running back position, showing that a back can indeed dictate the outcome of games – not just as a receiver, but as a runner – even in a 7-on-7 setting. The 5-9, 180-pounder was the talk of the 72 players on hand. The off season has certainly been good to the “Duke of Dade County.
“This event here was great,” Johnson said. “Some of the best players in the country and we got to compete against them for a few days.”
Johnson, along with his Norland teammate Johnson, and Burgess, have been together all summer - promoting the University of Miami, trying to get players aboard the Hurricane train that is about to take off. Two weeks ago, they were all in Oregon doing the same.
“This past few weeks have been great,” Brown said. “The trip is a perfect way to get ready for the season ahead.”
The Vikings, who are pre-season No. 4 in the state of Florida, will need Johnson and Brown to get the team back to Orlando in December.
As for Burgess, who continued to make play after play in the Gridiron Kings 7-on-7, the chance to be selected as one of the nation’s elite players is something that he has worked hard to achieve. Following in the rather large footsteps, he knows that what he does on the field will help him carve out his own future.
“This was a tremendous opportunity for me to be here and in Oregon,” Burgess explained. “You only get to come down this road once.”
In addition to what Johnson, Brown and Burgess did in the event, the state of Florida certainly left a mark with receiver Nelson Agoholor (Tampa Berkeley Prep), Jaime Wilson (Glades Central), P.J. Williams (Ocala Vanguard), LaTroy Pittman and Sean Price (North Marion) and Travis Blanks (Tallahassee N. Florida Christian) getting it done.

Carlos he is good, busy being an officer in th Army.
Nick is going to Oregon this fall along with our money. So no season tickets. Not sure we will go to a game this year at all....that is still up in the air.
I am not going to spend that much money for cane games until they improve. Tired of the misery....great to be with my friends but the product is not worth the money. If I lived in Miami it would be different.
