Congrats AlpharettaCane...

Got my OSU vs. the U tickets ordered today... (looks like it is going to be an evening game?)

Big shout out to Carlos! I remember a few years back, if I have the right Carlos, he used to get murdered on the blog for his take on the 'Canes, usually a bit more pessimistic than the others. But he always hung tough and stuck to his guns.

Carlos, you were a kindred soul. And more importantly, both of your kids are beautiful. Enjoy every second - they grow up too, too quickly.

Soup - appreciate the offer; KatieCane already has shirt so we're good to go.

AlpharettaCane

Roach - still struggling with the OSU-Miami pick. Think that's going to be a great game. Can't recall where all the pundits have Buckeyes ranked pre-season?

So many could go either way this year - Maryland, BC, NC (losing Butch helps)...believe FSU with 17 starters back still has upper hand, and until we beat VT I have to go with the Hokies.

Critical that we stay healthy, particulary at Dline, D-backs and LBs.

AlpharettaCane

Solar, great shot with you, soup and skool.

Radokovich may not survive all this at Tech. Between Tech and the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal, the news has been interesting down here lately

Can't wait for heat to break. My lawn looks like that lemon/lime soda from years ago, what was it? Lymon?

Hi alph,

You have to make the WYPT3 you're so close its crazy not to come join the fun. We were talking about dragging you up for Saturday night in Helen then an untimely water heater SNAFU changed the plans a bit.

CHAPEL HILL -- CHAPEL HILL --

Statement from Butch Davis:
My family and I were surprised and saddened to learn that I have been relieved of my duties as head football coach at Carolina. I am not naïve enough to have ever considered this situation anything less than a serious matter and a significant priority. I have worked as hard as possible to address all aspects of the program that have been questioned. I fully believe we were on our way to getting past these issues and moving ahead in a positive direction.

My family and I have been able to endure this difficult period in our lives for several reasons: First and foremost, as a family we have known all along that I personally did nothing wrong. That is the truth. Second, we have also had remarkable support from friends, family, the players, our coaching staff and so many others within the Tar Heel community. That these players and coaches were able to achieve the success they did last season, under such circumstances, makes me enormously proud.

Moving forward, I wish only the best for the current team and coaches. For the players in particular, I wish them nothing but success on the field and in the classroom. The coaches already know how I feel about them. I couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and dedication. In fact, during the past year or so, my respect and love for our players, the coaching staff and the football administrative staff has grown enormously. It’s a wonderful group of people and I will miss them all.

For now, I will not be doing any interviews. Perhaps in time I will feel more comfortable about discussing my future. But for now, it’s important to move on as smoothly as possible, because I absolutely do not want to add any further distraction for the players and coaching staff as they approach the 2011 season.

Miramar football player dies after workout
.A starter on the Miramar football team, who had three scholarship offers, collapsed and died after a workout.

When he showed up for pre-season training, Isaiah Laurencin told his teammates not to go easy on him. But near the end of Tuesday night’s drills — the second workout session of the day — Laurencin told the coach he was cramping.

As Coach Damon Cogdale told Laurencin to sit out the rest of the workout and grab some water, the 17-year-old went into cardiac arrest. Hours later, the coach, teammates and family filled his room at Memorial West Hospital to say goodbye.

“They always showed him love,’’ Erica Holmes, Laurencin’s aunt, said of his teammates. “They knew he would cramp up sometimes, they wouldn’t push him sometimes. But I guess he pushed himself because he wanted to be a professional football player.”

And he had a good shot at reaching his goal.

A senior offensive linesman, Laurencin was a member of Miramar High’s 2009 Class 6A state championship team as a sophomore. This year, the Miramar Patriots’ offensive line was ranked among the best in the state by Herald high school football analyst Larry Blustein, who picked Laurencin as a standout. Going into his senior year, Laurencin undoubtedly would have been in the starting lineup, despite recent knee surgery.

Laurencin had already received three scholarship offers and was talking to several other schools, according to his aunt. At 6-foot-2 and coming in at 285 pounds, Laurencin was also gentle giant, Holmes said.

“As a person he was very humble. He stuck to his Christianity,” she said.

She called her nephew a good student, one whose faith powered him on the field and in the classroom.

Once, when interviewed by The Miami Herald while Isaiah was on an elementary school class field trip, the then-11-year-old talked about the secret to success: “It’s simple. We have to do well in school to get what we want out of life,’’ he said while touring Miramar Fire Station 84.

It was that drive to succeed that had Laurencin returning to the field after undergoing offseason surgery on his medial collateral ligament. The lineman had only been back playing for three weeks when he collapsed.

Tuesday was a two-a-day: one workout in the morning, the second in the evening.

After the morning drills, Laurencin came back to the Miramar home where he lived with his aunt, mother Angela Cooper, his grandmother and younger sister Ronisha. Before heading out in the afternoon, he told his mother he loved her and would see her when he got home that night.

“He was a good, jolly, respectable boy. Well, you can say man. He was taller than all of us, the man of the house,” Holmes said.

With just a half hour to go until the end of the training session, Laurencin began cramping and vomiting.

Cogdale told Laurencin to sit on the bench and drink fluids, Holmes said. But that didn’t help, and Laurencin told his coach that his cramps were worse than any he’d had before.

The team called for an ambulance and alerted Laurencin’s mother. Then Laurencin went into cardiac arrest, Holmes said.

Cooper arrived to find her son resuscitated, but on his way to the hospital.

“The coach was holding him until the ambulance got in,” Holmes said.

Later that night, Laurencin fell into a coma; Laurencin’s family and teammates surrounded his bed as he passed away at 1:40 a.m.

As news of Laurencin’s death spread Wednesday to the South Florida community, hundreds of Laurencin’s friends left remembrances on two memorial Facebook pages. “I’m going to miss your jokes, your rapping, your singing, your laugh...” one friend wrote. Many asked how Laurencin’s death could have happened.

For high school football players, there’s never an off-season. Throughout the year, teams can have non-contact play, fitness drills and do conditioning exercises, said Rocky Gillis, athletic director for Broward County Athletic Association.

But Florida rules dictate that full-contact practices cannot begin until Aug. 8. No helmets, official jerseys or padding can be worn at school until then. However, there are no rules about how many workout sessions can be held before that Aug. 8 starting date, or rules regulating hydration and temperature. When Miramar’s training began at 5 p.m. Tuesday, the temperature was around 88 degrees with a heat index of 96 degrees.

Miramar High principal Brian Faso and Cogdale, the head coach, declined to comment Wednesday on Laurencin’s death.

Cogdale met privately with players and assistant coaches in his office Wednesday afternoon. Team members, then went to Laurencin’s home to pray with his mother.

Laurencin’s death isn’t the first high school football fatality in South Florida. In July 2000, Brian Bell, a 17-year old football star at Monsignor Pace in Opa-locka, died on the school’s field from congenital heart failure after a team workout.

An autopsy on Isaiah Laurencin will be performed Thursday.

A vigil for the player will be held at Miramar High, 3601 SW 89th Ave., at 7 p.m. Friday. The funeral will be held Aug. 6, in order to allow Laurencin’s father time to travel from Canada.

When the season begins, Holmes said, her nephew’s number, 76, will be worn by his friend, Clevonne Davis, known on the team as “Bear.’’ After that, it will be retired.

Marshall will wait & see when it comes to UNC
By Nick Stevens

Keith Marshall, the top running back prospect from the Class of 2012, has North Carolina on his shortlist.

The Heels are the only in-state school Marshall is still considering. With the news that football coach Butch Davis has been fired, Marshall will now wait to see what happens in Chapel Hill.

"I have to wait and see who they hire and what happens with the sanctions," Marshall said in a text message on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound back is a four-star prospect according to Rivals.com. He has over 30 offers on the table.

Last season, Marshall ran for 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Wildcats, and his 40-yard dash time has been clocked at 4.25 seconds. His talent and ability earned him a spot in the Under Armour All-American Bowl next January.

AlpharettaCane,

I feel better about OSU than Maryland right now to tell you the truth... getting by that first ACC hurdle will be a big step for this team.

If all goes well there, then I think the obvious... VaTech & FSU are the toughest matchups.

I'm feeling real good about the Golden Era though... but, like Canechic has been saying... gotta see it to believe it!

CC - got your text last night. I knew he would get fired......i just didn't think it would be now.

And I only came to that conclusion because he was not fired back in December when everything broke. Even ESPN is saying the timing is weird. Maybe they found additional issues that broke the camels back.

Yes I know I was just teasing! :) I was kind a shocked they did it this late. I believe that kid was going to start singing like a canary as he promised :)

Never ever would I think I would post something positive about Lane Kiffin but here goes.....he says he will probably suspend Mark Tyler for the whole year. He says he embarrassed the team, he is senior and as a coach he needs to send a message to the rest of the team. Thank you Lane Kiffin that is the right thing to do. Just like should have happened to Cookie a senior who embarrassed the team, his Mom, his school and himself. Actions DO have consequences!

SinisterCane

CaneChic

I still don't get the lovefest over Cookie? I have yet to see him make one single impact play and 80% of his tackle are downfield.

ftmcane

canechic, you are such a downer. relax a bit. you have no idea what the details are with cookie and the USC kid was just running his mouth. why does everyone have to walk such a straight line?

raizecane

Ohio - thanks for the roster. I downloaded it last night. Then played a buddy who plays FSU.

I beat him 23 - 7 and swears that I have a 'hack' because I downloaded the roster. Seminoles will NEVER learn.

Juancho

Just came across this site. I didn't realize Miami still had a football team. GO NOLES!

canechic

ftmcane the kid at USC has quite a past when it comes to drunken bad behavior, he too spit on a lady patron at a club in LA and has accosted a girl while drunk.

Sorry I may have excused Cookie had been a freshman and he just started partying and such but he is senior and knows better period. And the other kids must know this behavior will not be tolerated.

How would any of us be treated at work if this had happened? Some of us just may lose our jobs? These kids have an obligation to their team, their school and most importantly to themselves to behavior on the field and off the field in a manner becoming to all three. How do you expect any one to learn from their mistakes if there are no consequences?

Why do you think Casey Anthony murdered her daughter? Her whole life there were never consequences to her actions....every time the father tried to lay down the boom, the mom came in and undermined him.She manipulated everyone, including the justice system using the same tactics she learned as a kid. And an innocent child is dead. And I do not believe this will be her last run in with the law!

I hope Cookie learn his lesson and will make a positive out of a negative.....I hope coach Golden continues to use his behavior as a teaching tool but it still remains to be seen whether he did the right thing or not?

ftmcane

ftmcane

Casey Anthony and Cookie are two completely different situations and I don't think you can compare the two. Chick may have committed murder. Cookie was under the influence and we still don't know what happen. I'm not saying kids will be kids and move on, what I'm saying is cops are people just like you and I. They lie, steal, get drunk, and mistreat the public regularly. If cookie spit on a cop like they say he did, he would have taken a beating. Cops don't get spit on and let it slide. I think Golden knows what really happen and will probably sit cookie for a game for being intoxicated in public. You're going by what was in the news which in not entirely accurate.

Ohio_Cane

Juancho, if U didn't realize it even now, U'll know for sure on November 12th at Doak.

canechic

I am going solely on his words which he admitted too! I am the last person to ever defend a Miami police officer. My grandpa is a retired Metro detective so I know the cop game all to well....

What I am saying is when you continue to get away with bad behavior it does lead to more serious stuff. Casey Anthony is a perfect example!

ftmcane

Ohio, are we still waiting for something big to happen in recruiting before Aug. 6?

Painful to the eye, but loaded with good info that I have already put to use above!

How on earth is cookie's issue comparable to anthony's? that's ridiculous and irresponsible of you to compare the two. So cookie admitted he spit on an officer? I haven't seen that anywhere. So many morals with you? WTF? Have a drink.

VA Cane

Will not visit Cookie again, he got a reprive so thats that. Still have not seen him make an impact, hopefully he will.

From a football point of view, I will answer you; if you are in in for the long run, as I have been, football requires you to walk a straight line if you want to be successful. Discipline, integrity, commitment, focus, success...i.e. Winning require it. Same with life if you think about it. JMO

How kids learn to use tactics to get their way and if never showed a different direction this becomes normal behavior and it is used in all relationships. Kinda like dysfunction gets passed down through families. It becomes norm.

mistakes are part of life, you either learn from them or you don't. Agree with you VA, just seems like that's all CC wants to chat about. Only focuses on the negative. My point is a) we don't know what really happen and to say he should be kicked off the team without knowing the facts is wrong and b) football players, especially ones from miami are not and never will be angels.

canechic

LOL ungar. It is the Ipad corrector, I like it sometimes but hate it at other times.

SinisterCane

Cookie's career performance doesnt warrant the pitbull lock on any starting position, He should be be in F@@KIN' jail.

Ungar

Ahh, didn't see your message when I put the coppertone comment there.

Ipad corrector can be turned off, right? i hope so, my kids are supposed to get a lease on one for school, would hate to have them get a bad grade because their science experiment was on "Effect of Saltwater on the Growth of Butts".

3G Cane

Miami cops shoot first and ask questions later, plant guns on unarmed suspects and much too often abuse the power of their badge. Having frequented the Grove on many a night growing up here, I am very familiar with the roided out cop on a power trip unnecessarily harassing college kids. So picking on a football player and trumping up the arrest report to make him look bad is well within their capabilities. However I think both parties realized they were partially to blame for whatever happened that night, hence the reason for the dropped charges. But somehow comparing that to someone who supposedly murdered their child is a bit of a stretch. Ramon had no prior record and I'm glad Golden had his back and found out all the facts before just casting him aside.

UMike

Busk to the Fins

canechic

ftmcane I was merely comparing the situation to a relevant situation in the news today. Lane Kiffin was on Sports Center discussing the Mark Tyler matter. I made a comparison to both "new" news and cane news.

Reality sometimes bites, sorry did not intend to offend you at all.

Old Skool

Good Stuff Ungar

I would add that if he does wish to go to North Carolina, you can save him some time and make a referral to a good sports agent now.

Ungar

Gee I wonder if they'll vacate UNC's wins
which would mean that the longer Randy doesn't coach, the better his record gets.

Posted by: Old Skool | July 27, 2011 at 05:34 PM

Coincidentally, I was going back to get this as a repeat, good stuff as well!

In fact, if Miami lost to a team last year, it must be due to their cheating. NCAA, look into Free Shoes U, Upper Southern Florida, and Not A Dame, and HURRY!

ftmcane

i understand what you were trying to do, but you were way off base to compare the two. You're allowing the news/media to determine you opinion on what the punishment should be. 3G, thanks for backing me up on this. CC, sorry i'm always attacking you but it just seems like you don't like the hurricanes very much. How did you ever become a fan, our teams have historically been troublesome. doesn't really fit your criteria.

SinisterCane

Found this on Facebook lol

A Miami fan, a Florida fan, and an FSU fan are climbing a mountain and arguing about who loves their team the most. The Florida fan insists that he is the most loyal. ''This is for Florida!'' he yells and jumps off the mountain. Not to be outdone, the Cane fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells "This is for the Canes!" and pushes the FSU fan off the mountain. Repost if you're a Canes fan!!!

Because I do not like the behavior of one of the players on the team does not mean I do not like my team? Please remind me because I am a way old lady cane fan and my memories sometimes fail me.

I never saw any of those canes give up on each other, never saw them whine and complain about favorites, never saw them quit in a game......

Lewis & Porter were hurt last year and Robinson is a Question mark and Porter at 6 ft. tall is not going to be a sack machine. We did get 2 late DT's but King can't get through the clearing house and Smith is a Juco with weight issues. Sounds like he is an attack dog. I breeze through those comments and take them for what they are worth; no need to argue with them as it is a wate of time and typing. JMO

"Yes some canes in the past had questionable behavior but did you ever see that affect their play on the field."

Canechic, that comment contradicts everything you've said about Golden's handling of the situation. Basically all you're saying is that if "Cookie" has a great season, then all is forgotten. And as far as Kiffin is concerned, all I've got to say is...PHUCK KIFFIN! I can't believe you used that guys name as the foremost authority on the enforcement of "consequences". This guy is the complete antithesis of forecasting consequences, this is the same guy who said that people from the fertile recruiting grounds of Belle Glade are poor, uneducated people, who can't afford shoes. And I can go on and on with this guys DUMASS comments, so again... PHUCK LANE KIFFIN'S ELITIST ASS, HE CAN GO PHUCK HIMSELF!!!

Ooh, another internet tough guy! Ignore him and he'll go away.

I know, soup or solar will wipe the stink clean. But I am betting that it is "Juancho" again. Lost the FSU battle, so he switcherooed to being an OSU fan.

Tressel and Pryor and Clarett say they will be in the stands with you. They will need to borrow some of those quarters since the car dealership is not giving them freebies anymore.

Zero for two. Wanna try being a UNC fan next time?

Butch Davis needs all the help he can get!

I was very angry with Cookie, said some strong things. Then I thought about some of my kids over the years...and I knew I forgave them for various offenses; some big some little, some on the field, some off the field. Ultimately, UM hired AG to handle these things, not me. So yes, I was disappointed in the player, but I hope he does something with the chance...like speak to kids, encourage them to steer clear of problems, has a great year, gets his degree, makes him mom proud. I was kind of po'd, but time has made me think of my players...and my mistakes and second chances. Hope it does not happen again!! JMO

Canerock- I did not contradict. I do believe that some canes of old may have had questionable behavior, but I don't believe they were arrested, I mean correct me if I am wrong because I cannot recollect any of them being arrested while on the team and remaining on the team??

My comments about the old team however really reflect a different time. Football was different circumstances different. A much different animal than today.

I think Golden handled the situation wrong, I think Cookie's own words were distressing and an example needed to be set. But I know you guys feel different. I am speaking as a mother of 20 year old twins in college just like Cookie. I know what I expect from them and I know if they behaved like he did, money would be cut. I am sure Nicole would lose her scholarship and he leadership position with ZETA and maybe her chance to go to Medical School at the U.

I am also one of the few who thought Andre Johnson should have been suspended over the cheating thing. Because he did cheat, his student peers tried him and found him guilty. I even talked to him about it when I ran against him in the OB at canesfest. So yes I am not fan of bad behavior and not afraid to say it. Call me what you like!!!
