The interview was postponed until August when Fall practice starts.

Golden wanted to give the staff and players some time off from interviews over the Summer so he told Chris Freet (The UM SID) and LaTonya Sadler (Asst. SID) to decline interview requests until fall practice starts.

But I am first in line once the green light is given. I have some ??? already written up but do you have specific questions you want me to ask?

On Tuesday AM I am posting Part I of the two part feature on Swasey and the UM Strength and Conditioning program.

SOUP

Eddie Brown was part of the 1983 Miami Hurricanes football team that upset the University of Nebraska in the 1984 Orange Bowl to earn Miami's first National Championship.

The following year, Brown was named as a consensus first-team All-American and was the first WR in UM history to amass over 1,000 yards receiving, with 220 of those yards (on 10 catches) coming in the famous "Hail Flutie" shootout with Boston College. Brown would leave Miami setting school career records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving TDs.

In the 1985 NFL Draft, Brown was the 2nd receiver taken (after Al Toon) and the 13th pick overall in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals, three picks ahead of Jerry Rice. In 1985 he won the NFL Rookie of the Year Award, recording 53 catches for 942 yards and 8 touchdowns.

In 1988, Brown caught 53 passes for 1,273 yards and 9 touchdowns, leading the high-powered Bengals offense in yards, and leading to the 1988 AFC Championship and an appearance in Super Bowl XXIII. The season earned Brown his only trip to the Pro Bowl.

His 1,273 receiving yards was a franchise record, and his 24 yards per catch average is an NFL single-season record that still stands for receivers with 50+ receptions.

Brown's final NFL season was in 1991. He finished his 7-year NFL career with 363 catches (7th in Bengals history) for 6,134 yards (5th) and 41 touchdowns (4th), along with 164 rushing yards.

Hurricanes running back Lamar Miller has been added to the 2011 preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the top running back in college football by the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Southern Methodist University (SMU) Athletic Forum.

Miller is one of just five backs from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) included on the 51-player list. Just six other sophomores, alongside Miller, were given the preseason nod.

CG,
That sucks about the Land Management people not giving a crap about the Mustangs. Aren't wild horses considered a biotic natural resource?

solarcane

That Kyle Parker from Clemson can hit a baseball for a quarterback, he just hit two home runs in two at bats for Asheville.

CGNC

solar, the BLM found a way to use the land allocated for the wild horses for their own gain - I sign petitions all the time against that stuff but not sure what is happening lately. They have fenced and cross-fenced and created conditions that are unfavorable - they give the better grazing areas to the ranchers.

Oh and Solar, LOL!!!!!! while I am glad you found the clip of the shark handler "nifty", it was not "some dude in a chain mail suit in an aquarium" - it is a woman who does this in the ocean in the bahamas

"Now, going out by myself fishing, whenever my eyes open in the morning, I get up, I load the boat and I go. I don't wait on anybody. I don't have a schedule. I stay as long as I want to stay. There's no pressure on me to catch fish. And some days, when it's flat and nice, I may not even put a line in the water. I may just get up in the tower and ride, just to look at things. It's just so peaceful, so relaxing. I just love being out there."

GO PLAY OUTSIDE.

Find out how he fits into recruiting and camps, ask him does the coaching staff have him measure these guys to see their size. Also ask him guys to look for this season, ask him about forty times miller, benjamin we would like to know where they are now. The UM Sports Information Department (SID) has completely changed under Chris Freet as compared to the old regime under Mark Pray.

Pray and Shannon saw the media as the enemy that had to kept at arms length and therefore restricted access to info like they were the CIA guarding State secrets.

Freet and Golden see it completely differently. They see the media as an ally and an asset in helping them sell their product which is UM athletics and of course primarily football. Therfore they want to increase access and share the positive message that is UM athletics.

Freet knows we run articles that the mainstream media ignores and that we support UM and want to HELP not hurt the cause.

He realizes that Canespace and the UM SID are ALL on the same team. LaTonya Sadler the Assisstant SID under Freet who is responsible for media coverage of football at UM and I have talked via email about the Swasey Interview.

She sent me a list of the former Hurricanes that are now in the NFLU that worked out at UM this Summer under Swasey. That will be Part I of the two part series with Swasey and will run on Tuesday AM.

CG,
I agree jumping on Marlins, feeding sharks by hand, dropping down 180 ft waterfalls is crazy, but I salute those people that challenge themselves for the rush not cash.

It's cool to see people without a hundred sponsors patches on their shirt or wearing a professional team uniform doing stuff only for the thrill of doing it.

The only guy that ever sold out I still respect completely is Travis Pastrana.
Red Bull dumps millions and millions of dollars on him, and he still goes over to his friends house when no one is around and does backflips on a tricylcle.

AlpharettaCane

Have to be happy for the counry of Japan, if any country ever needed a big one they did following the tsunami.

Great example by both US and Japan as to what sports is all about - great showing and both teams represented their countries well.

Soup, thanks for the facts on Eddie Brown - if your list wasn't limited to that specific 4 year window, I would've stuck him on the list in the WR slot.

Davis Should Go -- Now
by Art Chansky's Sports Notebook, posted Jul 17 2011 9:53PM

UNC can still begin moving beyond its regrettable football scandal of the last year, regardless of its final fate from the NCAA. Ohio State has conveniently provided Carolina with the model it should use in order to separate a scandalous past from a brighter future.

The Buckeyes, whose transgressions aren’t nearly as severe as those charged to the Tar Heels, immediately looked ahead by removing decorated head coach Jim Tressel after he bore responsibility for the violations by several of his players. The school installed assistant Luke Fickell as interim coach for the 2011 season.

The dirty laundry Ohio State still must deal with is off to the side and out of the public’s face, while its fans can focus on the new season without the controversy hanging over their heads on a daily basis. And perhaps Tressel’s firing and the Buckeyes vacating all of their 2010 wins, including the Sugar Bowl championship, may lessen their forthcoming NCAA penalties.

Carolina should do the same – immediately – before practice begins in August. Few objective observers truly believe that Butch Davis will survive the NCAA and academic allegations, for which he bears responsibility as the head coach and CEO of the football program but has yet to admit. Chancellor Holden Thorp, to this point a staunch supporter of Davis, told the Raleigh News and Observer that the Michael McAdoo plagiarism case “is another sad part of the whole episode.”

So Carolina’s leadership has two choices:
Allow Davis to coach the 2011 season under constant inquiry and suspicion over what else may come out and what will result from the October 28 hearing with the NCAA.
Remove Davis as head coach, let coordinators John Shoop and Everett Withers coach the team and give the players and fans a break from the non-stop controversy.
If Davis coaches this season, he will face the media at least 50 times after the Operation Football press confab on July 25 in Pinehurst -- between training camp, weekly teleconferences and live press conferences and after each of UNC’s 12 games, home and away. There will be constant questions over what has transpired, what may yet be revealed and the NCAA hearing. It’s unreasonable that Davis and Carolina can stonewall their way through such an inquisition.
Even if they can, does the team really need that distraction?

If Davis were removed, UNC’s pile of dirty laundry would be “off to the side” and the Tar Heels could play football out from under the cloud of controversy. How refreshing that would be at this point. Whatever advantage UNC has by Davis’ presence would be negated by the side show he will create after emerging from being virtually underground for the last 7 months.

Making such a move would also give Carolina a chance to plan for the future, and there is an obvious way to do that, as well. Whoever’s in charge at UNC these days (and that’s debatable) should say, “Enough is enough” and start repairing a tarnished image.

“That so many who have nurtured and protected that reputation for so many years . . . haven't publicly called for Davis' head is the saddest part of the whole sorry episode.” – Scott Mooneyham, Greenville Daily Reflector

Dick Baddour, who is in the last year of his contract, could announce his retirement effective next June 30 and spend his remaining time in office dealing with the dirty laundry and preparing for October 28. UNC could begin a search for a new athletic director, whose first duty would be to hire a head coach. The next AD should come from the outside with experience in hiring coaches and overseeing those hires when necessary, an area where Baddour failed miserably.

Carolina has a history of no contingency plan that has resulted in the hiring of Carl Torbush, Matt Doherty and John Bunting, all of whom were eventually fired.

Where will UNC be if, next December, the NCAA hands down the major penalties that most knowledgeable pundits are predicting? Georgia Tech received four years of probation and a $100,000 fine for one player receiving impermissible benefits totaling $312. Two years ago, Michigan got three-year probation because its coaches exceeded the weekly 20-hour limit for practice. Clearly, the Tar Heels’ violations are more numerous and egregious.

“Butch Davis and North Carolina could face NCAA penalties more severe than USC even received.” – Sporting News

No school has ever been charged with its associate head coach and recruiting coordinator (John Blake) being a paid by an agent while on the university payroll. Since that is unprecedented, there is no telling what kind of sanctions will follow. Also, the academic fraud among players and accused tutor Jennifer Wiley being hired privately by Davis are serious sins in the eyes of the NCAA, according to reports.

“ . . . if proven, those violations rank alongside any of the last decade.” – Sports Illustrated, July 11, 2011

By the terms of his contract and from the hue and cry of alumni, whose university’s reputation and integrity have been seriously compromised, Davis could never be retained if Carolina receives a major NCAA probation. But if UNC waits until November or December to fire Davis and does not have a new athletic director in place by then, what coach would want to come under such a chaotic situation? Certainly, a lame-duck Baddour hiring the fourth football coach of his tenure is not an option.

It is time for UNC to take stock of its current position and begin planning for the future. The Ohio State model looks like a good one to emulate.

Two generations of Miami Hurricanes ready for more father-son memories

Former UM football player James Burgess is excited to see his son, James Burgess Jr., a UM commit, line up for the Hurricanes next year.

He calls him big brother James now.
But James Burgess remembers when his eldest son, James Jr., used to run around Greentree Practice Field at the University of Miami with his father’s helmet on — one that was way too big for his little 3-year-old head.

“Those are the memories you don’t forget,” said Burgess, who made 28 starts in his career at UM from 1993 to 1996 and racked up 343 career tackles, ninth-most in school history.

“He and [coach] Butch Davis’ son [Drew] would run around and play all day after practice. James would put my helmet on and try to run, but it was so big on him and he couldn’t see. He would crash into things, fall down. It was adorable.”

Burgess, now a 37-year-old father of four who works with the Department of Immigration, processing detainees at Krome Detention Center, will soon have new memories of his son wearing a Hurricanes helmet. Last week, James Jr., a 6-foot, 208-pound outside linebacker at Homestead High, verbally committed to become part of UM’s 2012 signing class, making his father proud.

“It’s a great feeling as a father to know he’ll be out on that field again next year, continuing a legacy that can go on for years — just like the Chickillos,” said Burgess, who earned All-Big East first-team honors in 1996 after finishing second on the team with 119 tackles.

“We kind of argued a year ago when my son told me he wasn’t interested in going to [UM]. I guess he kind of got out of the loop when Randy Shannon was there. But when Al [Golden] came in, a lot of his feelings started to shift. I took him to the spring game and he liked what he saw. When he came home from the Nike Camp in Oregon he said ‘Dad, I think I’m going to UM.’ That put a big smile on my face.”

The younger Burgess, considered the 35th-best outside linebacker in the country by ESPN, said he had offers from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, USF and North Carolina among others.

What ultimately swayed him to UM was the camaraderie he built with now fellow Hurricanes commitments Miami Norland running back Duke Johnson and linebacker Keith Brown, who also convinced Homestead receiver Herb Waters to commit to UM. The four players spent five days together in Beaverton, Ore., this month as part of Nike’s newest training competition, The Opening.

“They were the biggest factor,” Burgess said of Johnson and Brown, who committed to UM as juniors. “I wasn’t thinking about any colleges when I was out there. But they kept talking to me about one family, one team. I thought I might as well stay home, be comfortable and not too far away from my mother.”

Burgess, one of five linebackers committed to UM’s next class, was the only linebacker among 22 standouts to make the 7-on-7 all tournament team at The Opening. He had three interceptions during the tournament and impressed scouts with his abilities in pass coverage. He tested out at the combine with a 4.68-time in the 40-yard dash.

ESPN rates him the 35th-best outside linebacker in the country. Last season, he finished with 132 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception in nine games for the Broncos, earning All-Dade third-team honors. With a 2.6 grade point average and a ACT test score of 23, he’s hoping to be able to enroll at UM in January and get a head start on his college career.

Behind the Facemask: Shawn O'Dare

"The Golden Era you can already tell that it is going to be better. So far he’s done a great job. You can obviously see so many changes since last year. Last year was my first year with Coach Shannon, but you can tell the differences and just the team chemistry so far.

At the U, I’ve learned so much from the older receivers, especially [Leonard] Hank [Hankerson], [LaRon] Byrd, Travis [Benjamin]. Coming in last year was my first year playing receiver because I was a quarterback in high school. They helped me a lot through the transition of playing a new position.

Coach McDonald is great. He’s easy to talk to; I think he brings a different experience, different knowledge than what we had before.

No one can believe I…Well me and Byrd we freestyle sometimes. I don’t think many people believe that.

A song that no one can believe I have on my iPod is Miley Cyrus, “Party in the USA,” It’s a great song.

Football has given me a sense of responsibility. Learning about team cohesion for future jobs and stuff, because everything you do depends on your team, it is not a one person thing. Just like football, a job interview… it is a team thing.

I’m a Hurricane because of the family and the legacy of championships. When you think of Miami you think of all the players that come back from the NFL. During the lockout you see almost every one of them here and just the greatness of championships. When you think of Miami, our fans, we expect to be competing for national championships every year.

When I played football as a kid, I pretended to be Dan Marino. I had my little J.C. Penny’s helmet with the jersey and the little football.

Superstition. Well, we are sponsored by Nike here, but in high school I had to wear everything Nike. So I’m glad we’re sponsored by Nike.

The most influential people in my life are my parents. They have instilled the stuff I do today since I was little, and just being supportive in everything that I do. If I thought I could do it, they thought I could do it to.

When I was six years old, I was a quiet kid just going with the flow.

Other than football, I’m talented at basketball. I played basketball in high school as a point guard, which was fun.

The actor I would want to play me in a movie is Brad Pitt, probably just because of the resemblance. (Laughs)

A lesson learned is hard work. If you set a goal that you really want, you can accomplish it.

I don’t really have a favorite midnight snack, but I always have a protein shake before I go to sleep. That’s my thing.

We are all in it together. It is a family here of tradition. We all have to band together to pass our conditioning test, which we did. We did it and we are all family.

I was raised in Vero Beach, Florida. I lived in the same house my whole life, an only child.

I am afraid of getting old.

If I were a superhero, my name would be S.O.D., my nickname here, and my superpower would be invincible."

Wide open shot on goal and kicking it over the net, both during the game and then during PKs, just sad.

Buchanan, Spence Could Be Next UM Butkus Award Winner:

"CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Two Miami linebackers, Ramon Buchanan and Sean Spence, were recently named to the 2011 Butkus Award watch list, which is given each year to the best linebacker in NCAA Division I-A college football. Miami is tied for first in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in number of players chosen for the list with two.

Buchanan enters his senior campaign after starting 10 of 13 games in 2010 and recording 54 tackles (fifth best on the team) and eight tackles for loss. The Melbourne, Fla. native amassed a career-high seven tackles in the Canes' October 9th contest against Florida State and recorded six tackles in each of Miami's games versus Florida A&M, Clemson, University of Virginia, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

For Spence, this marks the fourth preseason watch list he has been named to. He was also recently placed on the 2011 watch lists for the Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy and Lombardi Award. The linebacker was voted Miami's Most Valuable Player last season and was a 2010 Second-Team All-ACC selection with 111 tackles and 16 tackles for loss.

Dan Morgan was the first Hurricane to be lauded with the Butkus Award in 2000. That same year, he also earned the Nagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award, which are both given to college football's best defensive player. Spence now has the unique opportunity to become the first Cane since Morgan to receive all three honors in the same season.

Instituted in 1985, The Butkus Award is one of the elite individual honors in college football. In 2008, The Butkus Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, took stewardship of the award to fully realize the original purpose of honoring athletic achievement and service to the community while honoring the nation's best high school, college and professional linebackers.

The award's recipient is chosen by the independent Butkus Award Selection Committee, which is headed by Pro Football Weekly's Hub Arkush and is comprised of 51 experts including professional, college and high school scouts, and prominent sports journalists.

To see Buchanan, Spence and the rest of the Hurricanes in action this fall call 1-800-Go-Canes for tickets or purchase online through HurricaneSports.com."

PS - Speaking of Buchanon, how's this kid doing after the arrest and all that? Did it end up being a misunderstanding, or did he get a free pass to come back? Never did hear anything.

He's a freakin monster on NCAA 12. Maybe they played that, then decided? Lol

UMike

Ohio...I was thinking the same thing..on NCAA 11 he is CRAZY good..fast and a INT machine...If #45, #99 and #7 are as good in person as they are in NCAA 11 we will be 13-0 lol

UMike

Oh..and #6 too

Speaking of fictional video game players comparing to real life... Hopefully Chase Ford doesn't suck as much as he does in NCAA 12. He can't catch or block. Got moved from 1st to 3rd string by week 3.

Whoa, off-topic but the News of the World/News Corp whistleblower was found dead today.

I'm trying to get this hat: http://www.shopmiamihurricanes.com/Miami-Hurricanes-White-New-Era-59FIFTY-Old-English-FLA-Fitted-Hat-_-1827937598_PD.html

Anyone down there in Florida know where I can find it in a size 7? I've searched tons of websites and they all don't carry it any more.

Thanks!

When I spoke to him at the Spring game I asked him if he was ready to have a big season. He looked the part and then replied:

"I have to. I'm a senior now so this is my last chance to make it happen."

If it is in him I think you will see him perform and ball out this year. I still think he can get it done.

If not, then well...NEXT!

I'm 29. I bought a 7 1/4, and it was too big. Size 7 for hat is small? Well, then I got a small head lol

^^ I even used a sizing chart recently, and it says size 7 is medium. Lol

Sure, there's always some almost-great RB just waiting to bust out at VT. But damned if I can think of one that really and truly did.

U's may have a relatiely small craniUm.

Nonetheless, U's still have T-E-N TIMES the inner sagacious wisdom than that " narrow-minded " extra-large Goober head from the St. Pedro/Tampa area. Eh.

Matter of fact, that suburban good ol' boys Goober be so big, HE-SHE has to have an cerebral ENEMA. From time to time. Being that HE-SHE's grey matter is full of chit. Say it ain't so, Bozo.

Seriously, macjones: it's like your speaking some language that only two twins know. Let us in on the gag -- throw us a bone, so we've got some idea what you're saying.

SAY IT AIN'T SO:

10/22/11 vs. Georgia Tech * Miami Gardens, Fla. TBA

10/27/11 vs. Virginia * Miami Gardens, Fla. 8:00 p.m. ET

Two ACC games back to back withing 5 days?

Who made this schedule???

SOUP

^^^^^^^

For out-of-towners that schedule sucks. Driving Twice to Miami in the same week?

Six hours or more round trip?

That's gonna hurt attendance fo sho!
