CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami has been notified of the actions taken by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff.
“The NCAA has informed the University of Miami of their decisions regarding the reinstatement of eight student-athletes who were declared ineligible by the University last week, “ said UM Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst. “The student-athletes involved have acknowledged receiving improper benefits and will now be responsible for restitution and, in some cases, the student-athletes will also serve game suspensions. They understand that their actions demand consequences.
“This university has the highest standards in all of our academic and athletic endeavors. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to continue to build winning programs with the utmost of integrity. We will be more vigilant in our compliance and continue to work with the NCAA on the joint investigation to determine the facts.
“We appreciate the diligence and understanding of the NCAA staff and its handling of the student-athlete eligibility issues in an expeditious manner. I would also like to thank Coach Golden and his staff for their professionalism and leadership over the past few weeks.”
Additionally, the following football student-athletes have been cleared by the NCAA to participate in all competition though each must make repayment in the amount of less than $100 for receiving impermissible benefits: Brandon McGee, JoJo Nicholas, Micanor Regis and Vaughn Telemaque.
Senior Marcus Robinson has been cleared of any NCAA violations and will not face any penalties.
Finally, UM head coach Al Golden announced that senior wide receiver Aldarius Johnson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Oliver Vernon gets 6 games; Ray-Ray and Dye 4; Jacory, Forston, Spence, Benjamin, Ojomo 1 game suspension.
Posted by: Alberto | August 30, 2011 at 05:34 PM

> Defensive end Olivier Vernon received more than $1,200 in benefits and must miss six games and make repayment of the value of the benefits.
> Safety Ray Ray Armstrong and tight end Dyron Dye will miss four games and must make repayment. Ray Ray owes $788 and Dye owes $738.

This is what amazes me about all the sensationalized coverage of this whole affair...
Rhett Bomar at Oklahoma took "improper benefits" that totalled 4 times the amount of all of our players combined...no calls for the death penalty, no "shut down the program" for Oklahoma...

We are about to determine how good Al Golden really is as a coach. He has a lot of distractions and issues to deal with, but at least now the Canes know what to expect and can at least put this behind them.
I don't know who won the QB job in camp, but its now up to Morris-17 to step up. If Morris plays well in College Park, it will be hard for Golden to bench him going forward.
Golden will have the Canes ready to play.

Eight Miami (Fla.) football student-athletes must miss competition and repay benefits as a condition of becoming eligible to play again, according to a decision Tuesday by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. The student-athletes received varying levels of recruiting inducements and extra benefits from university booster Nevin Shapiro and athletics personnel, according to the facts of the case.
Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete’s involvement are determined. This is typically well in advance of infractions decisions. The enforcement investigation into the university's football program is ongoing.
MIAMI SUSPENSIONS
Player Pos. Game(s)
Olivier Vernon DE 6
Aravious Armstrong S 4
Dyron Dye TE 4
Travis Benjamin WR 1
Marcus Forston DL 1
Jacory Harris QB 1
Adewale Ojomo DL 1
Sean Ryan Spence LB 1
Of the eight football student-athletes, three received substantial benefits as prospective student-athletes from Shapiro and athletics personnel to entice them to enroll at the university, which are considered some of the most serious recruiting violations within the NCAA.
Olivier Vernon, who received more than $1,200 in benefits primarily from Shapiro, must miss six games and make repayment of the value of the benefits. These recruitment benefits included meals, transportation, access to Shapiro’s game suite, drinks, as well as cover charges at two different nightclubs, among others.
Two other student-athletes, Aravious Armstrong and Dyron Dye, will miss four games and must make repayment. Armstrong received approximately $788 in extra benefits from Shapiro and athletics personnel during his recruitment. Dye received approximately $738. These student-athletes’ benefits included five nights of impermissible lodging from institutional staff during their unofficial visits, transportation, multiple meals, and entertainment at a gentleman’s club.
Different than the first three student-athletes, five other student-athletes received impermissible benefits while currently enrolled at the university.
These five student-athletes – Marcus Forston, Sean Ryan Spence, Adewale Ojomo, Travis Benjamin and Jacory Harris – must miss one game and make repayment. Forston received more than $400 in extra benefits from Shapiro and athletic personnel, including athletic equipment, meals, nightclub cover charges and entertainment at a gentleman’s club. Spence received approximately $275 in benefits, including meals, transportation, as well as cover charges and entertainment at a gentleman’s club. Ojomo received $240 in extra benefits, including a meal and nightclub cover charges. Benjamin received more than $150 in extra benefits, including meals and entertainment. Harris received more than $140 in benefits from meals, entertainment, transportation and nightclub cover charges.
During the student-athlete reinstatement process, the staff considers a number of factors including guidelines established by the Division I NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for the type of violations and value of benefits, if a significant competitive advantage was gained, the student-athlete’s responsibility for the violations and any mitigating circumstances presented by the school, among other factors.
“From regular reviews of our rules to the presidential retreat earlier this month, our members have continually stressed that involvement of third parties during recruitment will not be tolerated, and there must be accountability for inappropriate behavior,” said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs.
STUDENT-ATHLETE REINSTATEMENT
Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete’s involvement are determined. Most cases are resolved quickly. In fact, many likely conclude before an investigation closes.
• More information
When a school discovers an NCAA rules violation has occurred, it must declare the student-athlete ineligible and may request the student-athlete’s eligibility be reinstated. The NCAA staff reviews each student-athlete’s reinstatement request individually based on its own merits and set of specific facts, which are agreed upon by the university and the NCAA enforcement staff. The University of Miami has not submitted any additional reinstatement requests at this time.
"The NCAA has informed the University of Miami of their decisions regarding the reinstatement of eight student-athletes who were declared ineligible by the University last week,” Miami athletics director Shawn Eichorst said. “The student-athletes involved have acknowledged receiving improper benefits and will now be responsible for restitution and, in some cases, the student-athletes will also serve game suspensions. They understand that their actions demand consequences.
"This university has the highest standards in all of our academic and athletic endeavors. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to continue to build winning programs with the utmost of integrity. We will be more vigilant in our compliance and continue to work with the NCAA on the joint investigation to determine the facts.
"We appreciate the diligence and understanding of the NCAA staff and its handling of the student-athlete eligibility issues in an expeditious manner. I would also like to thank Coach [Al] Golden and his staff for their professionalism and leadership over the past few weeks."
The reinstatement process typically concludes prior to the close of the enforcement investigation, which must determine the university’s responsibility for violations. While it depends on the complexity of the case, most student-athlete reinstatement requests are resolved in about a week after the school has provided a complete request and the reinstatement staff has all the necessary information. In contrast an enforcement investigation, which also varies in length depending on the complexity, must look at the totality of issues and takes an average of 11 months. For this reason, student-athlete reinstatement decisions do not signal that an enforcement investigation is complete.
The university can appeal any student-athlete reinstatement decision to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, an independent panel comprised of representatives from NCAA member colleges, university and athletic conferences who are not directly affiliated with the university. This committee can reduce or remove the condition, but it cannot increase the staff-imposed conditions. If appealed, the student-athlete remains ineligible until the conclusion of the appeals process.

That’s the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. This thing is far from over and you can bet on that. It’s obvious that these guys came clean and that is why the NCAA didn’t make them eligible (ala Cam Newton). My only question is if Harris needed $140, couldn’t he have borrowed it from Vernon?
Getting a 1 game suspension for $10.00 is almost as bad as getting fired on your day off

Hurtt’s Miami recruits punished
Posted on August 30, 2011 by C. L. Brown
Three former Miami recruits U of L defensive line coach Clint Hurtt allegedly delivered to renegade booster Nevin Shapiro while he served on the Hurricanes’ staff received the harshest punishments of the eight players disciplined by the NCAA today.
Aravious "Ray-Ray" Armstrong and Dyron Dye each received four-game suspensions and must repay a total of slightly more than $1,500.
The NCAA determined that Armstrong ($788) and Dye ($738) received extra benefits from Shapiro and "athletics personnel" during his recruitment. The NCAA report concluded:
"These student-athletes’ benefits included five nights of impermissible lodging from institutional staff during their unofficial visits, transportation, multiple meals, and entertainment at a gentleman’s club."
One recruit that also was alleged to be introduced to Shapiro by Hurtt, Olivier Vernon, received the harshest punishment among the Canes’ players. The NCAA ruled that he received more than $1,200 primarily from Shapiro and suspended him six games and ordered him to make repayment.
The NCAA reported Vernon’s illegal benefits included "meals, transportation, access to Shapiro’s game suite, drinks, as well as cover charges at two different nightclubs, among others."
The remaining five Canes not affiliated with Hurtt in the Yahoo! Sports investigation received 1-game suspensions and were told to repay up to $400.
It’s unclear what this may mean for Hurtt. It appears to validate Shapiro’s allegations if the players and NCAA prove that Hurtt had knowledge of those improprieties as initially reported by Yahoo.
As of Monday, head coach Charlie Strong said the NCAA had not contacted Hurtt about his role in the Miami scandal.

If U recall correctly I specifically quoted Lamar Thomas and Andre Johnson both of whom I interviewed IN PERSON about which incoming Freshman WR would be the best of the bunch and they BOTH said and I QUOTE: "Aldarius Johnson".

We have to run,run and run most of the game to keep our defense off the field. Maybe go for some deep passes. If we can do that we will be OK on Monday. Also, I wouldn´t be surprised if we see a five receiver set to keep them on their toes. GO CANES!!!

Look at how many of u are gonna see significant PT on Monday (namely on the defensive side of the ball). You guys hyped??? I love that u all will see the field so quickly...and talk about being thrown into the fire...nationally televised game on primetime which proly is the ONLY game that night, MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL jus like the pros, on the road, oh and did I mention it's a conference game???
Yea...this is it
Let the dogs out...sick em, take no prisoners, and come out with that W by any means necessary. Even with our suspensions we're still bigger, faster, stronger, BETTER. Make the terps the twurps and show the nation why we all tweeted #IStandWithTheU.
Make freshman impacts like Santana, Morgan, Ray, and every other Cane that dominated from day one. WIN BIG...make statements, let em kno that yall r takin names and kickn @$$. THIS IS WHAT U CAME HERE FOR...

I'm very upset this news comes in right now. All of this was blown out of proportion. But now the players that did wrong are punished and we will have to move on. Sad though..I have a lot to say but also a couple things are mind boggling..
Why is O.Vernon suspended for 6 games but up at OSU Terrell Pryor and co all got 5 games but did way more..free body art..discounted cars and selling everything.
Now we have the depth chart and I'm curious to know why Fig is the starting LT if Bounche beat out Seantrel then he earned the spot a week of training and he lost his job? Now I won't get to see Ray Ray blast Bryce Brown...
Go canes. Great offseason and I love what golden has done.

there is no institutional crap here. think about it, if shanon chased him away when he came in and warned all players and assistants to stay clear of him or else, and somehow, he circumvented shanon's control and went behind his back to affect his recruits without shanon's knowledge. this shows the actions of a rogue booster that had no respect for the institution's rules.

Okay, whatever you say, hoss.
Anyway, although he hasn't had problems with drops like some other UM WRs, "glue hands" is probably going a bit far.

If U recall correctly I specifically quoted Lamar Thomas and Andre Johnson both of whom I interviewed IN PERSON about which incoming Freshman WR would be the best of the bunch and they BOTH said and I QUOTE: "Aldarius Johnson".

Well this sucks balls. The good news is we will be fine for the Ohio State game. Most of the players will be back in time. However, losing Ray Ray and Vernon hurts. But I am pretty sure those two will not be the deciding factor in a win for us. Do not get me wrong they will be missed but those two should not determine our season. Maryland game is a different animal we lost too much to expect to win this game. At least fortson, spence, ojomo and benjamin will be ready to go forthe Ohio state game.

The university can appeal any athlete’s penalty to the NCAA’s committee on student-athlete reinstatement – on which UM deputy athletic director Tony Hernandez serves. Hernandez would have to recuse himself. If appealed, the student-athlete remains ineligible until the conclusion of the appeals process.
Why is O.Vernon suspended for 6 games but up at OSU Terrell Pryor and co all got 5 games but did way more..free body art..discounted cars and selling everything.

The only thing different about this year's team vs the last several years is that The Turnstile will be on the Left Side this year as opposed to the right (Figs, Pipho).

Maryland has plenty of issues of its own. Vegas has Miami as a mid-sized favorite.

OK if it will make EVERYBODY happy then I will confess to my transgressions:
I WAS WRONG ABOUT AJ II.
But to qualify that comment I ONLY said that because two of the GREATEST WRs ever at UM TOLD ME SO!
IF LT#36 and AJ#5 told you to your face that he was gonna be the next GREAT one, what would U say?
Posted by: SOUP | August 30, 2011 at 07:59 PM
Does anyone else feel that the NCAA came down really harsh on us? I would be pissed if I were Travis Benjamin.

If our te s get some receptions and we drop the ball off to the backs on the delay then your the receivers are gonna get open... they gonna half to key on smash and dash in the open field.

Being that their statements were not based on projections/extrapolation and a minimal amount of data, I'd say they were still opinions. You were star-struck and that clouded your judgment.
I'm just saying... still love me some SOUPster up in here though. you da best!

That HAS to be a typo. I don't buy it. Maybe he went over the $100 limit by $10 dollars so in effect it was over $10?
