expect that delay is influenced by the NCAA's evaluation of the 12 players. Be patient. Several look to have cleared.

What do Chris & Justin feel is happening "behind the scenes" at the U right now? Are any heads gonna roll of people remaining who haven't already jumped ship?
Have they had any "real" contact with AG? Is he as "impressive" in person as he appears to all of us on the "outside?"

Appreciate it Tom! I may not be at UM now but I'll always be part of the orange and green family. You and your site has been great to me over the years.
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:01 PM
If a ship is capsizing, there is no better person than to salvage the situation than Al Golden. He is the CEO of the University of Miami. It's definitely crisis management at UM. While on the outside they post articles on Green Tree All Americans, inside everyone is second guessing saying why. And the adults are largely to blame in all of this. I mean Jimmy Gaines is taking questions about this while Donna is reading PR statements and hiding. It's not fair and it's not right. Golden is the man. While adminstrators are worried about the consequences. Al is worried about how this affects the depth chart.
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:04 PM
Justin is really is great to have canesfest on campus this year! Gets the average Miami fan up close and personal with the school! My daughter is a junior at the U!
I am the negative gal here on the blog, I want to see the players suspended to give Al Golden a fresh clean start, to start a new culture, what are feelings about the "named" players?
Posted by: canechic | August 24, 2011 at 08:05 PM
Justin-what are your thoughts on how the national media has covered the scandal?
Posted by: TLuv | August 24, 2011 at 08:06 PM
Justin, thanks for coming over to the Space again!
Any truth to the rumors that Vernon and a couple others have been cleared (quietly) behind the scenes?
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 24, 2011 at 08:07 PM
To answer Canechic - your daughter picked the perfect school. Being at the U was the best four years of my life and it gave me opportunities I could only dream of. I do side with you. While a lot of Canes fans are looking at this situation with orange and green glasses, I've got a realistic approach. I'm not naive about this. I do think the players should be suspended as well. Golden is a man of utmost integrity. And remember players will already be suspended for the opener even before the Yahoo story broke. So there is some serious depth issues. As for the 12 players named, it dramatically affects the defense. I mean the secondary starts would be Chambers, Highsmith, Swasey and McGee. YIKES

Ohio Canes - There is no truth to the Vernon rumor as far as I know. Not sure what would make him expemt and others not. Players parents are naturally going to side with their sons. He's status is still up in the air like everyone elses.
TLuv - The national media is jumping on the story and rightfully so. The calendary has featured a plethora of scandals and this is the icing on the cake. It's big news because the MLB is in a grind, preseason NFL is like nonalcoholic beer...why bother, there is no NBA. This is the premiere headline to talk about. SI, CBSSports all have a right to voice their opinions. It's a lot easier to bash a program when it's already down. It's a lot harder to speak highly of something in tough times. Seems like a lot of people are taking the easy way out.

I'm here now. Feel free to send questions my way.
I have to imagine everyone involved is nervous right now. I imagine the feeling that they can't control the outcome has swept over and the only thing they have to hang on to is their voluntary cooperation with the NCAA and the source (Nevin Shapiro).
As for your Al Golden question, he is very impressive in person. Looks you in the eye when you answer questions. I think a lot of it has to do with his appearance actually. Having slicked back hair and being in shape adds credibility. He also rarely stutters and seems to know the questions before they're asked and has answers ready.

Orgeon, lol. You are sending your children to places full of scandals haha. I'm just joking. Lots of good Nike gear up in Eugene!
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:15 PM
SlingBlade - no truth to the rumor of the penalty of the players being announced. This will be a long process and it will be a risk to see what Al Golden and his staff do. I think that's why the depth chart is taking longer to publish because lots of pieces to put in place.

Chris/Justin: Let's talk UM hoops for a minute. First Reggie Johnson goes down to a knee injury and now Julian Gamble tears an ACL. How much bad luck can the UM basketball team take?
Posted by: 86Cane | August 24, 2011 at 08:17 PM
I'm interested to who the other 2 players are of the 15. We know it's the 12 football players and DeQuan Jones. I wouldn't be surprised if Durand Scott is one of them. Scott's high school coach from Rice High in the Harlem, NY was Moe Hicks. Hicks was clubbing with Fernandez in South Beach with Shapiro's money. It's an interesting thing to keep an eye. Basketball team is already without Reg for half year and Gamble for entire year. That's just my humble opinion.
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:19 PM
With all the complaints about the NCAA and their investigative threats is there any way that people outside of the college world be a part of changing what seems to be out of control authority? A lot of good players lives have been destroyed by breaking a rule that seems to be miniscule compared to the punishment. Good Coaches have been forced to resign etc.

Justin-what are your thoughts on how the national media has covered the scandal?
--
I'm stealing this question because I wanted to hit on this. I think the opinions from guys like Pat Forde and Buzz Bissinger are reasonable to be upset about. Those OPINIONS backed by no information and a lack of perspective are fine to be upset about.
But to get upset at Yahoo, who did an investigation, wrote a high-level high-interest well-done story, promoted it as such, and got a huge reaction should not be blamed. If you want to poke holes in the story, there are some and there should be questions asked of anything, but to flatly deny its credibility is also lacking in perspective and only reveals an emotional desire to not want to believe the allegations. Don't blame them for the reaction to this
Posted by: ChrisWittyngham | August 24, 2011 at 08:21 PM
86Canes - At least USC Upstate isn't on the schedule. Before that was Miami's biggest marquee out of conference game because Haith was a baby and didn't challenge the team. The hoops team will struggle. They are learning a new system. Have no post play. I would start 5 guards. You have to hope Shane Larkin gets a medical waiver so he can play right away. If Larkin is eligible I'd start: Larkin, Malky, Scott, Brown, Trey McKinney. A very very small lineup
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:21 PM
how is coach larranaga handling all of this...we keep hearing how everyone feels so bad for golden..but a loss of scholarships can hurt a basketball team worse than it can a football team...and with the loss of johnson and gamble do you see Akpejiori and Kadji getting a ton of minutes or do you see larranaga playing the hand he is dealt and going with an uptempo version of small ball...?
Posted by: SlingBlade | August 24, 2011 at 08:21 PM
MiamiCane - unfortuntely innocent players are going to have to bear the burden for others wrong actions. It's the only way it works. I don't see the system changing and I'm extremely against paying student athletes. Having an education, housing, athletic gear, meals and the chance to represent your university on the playing field is enough.

It is an unreasonable amount of bad luck. I don't know how these injuries happened and I'd like to talk to Julian gamble about them who I see around campus on crutches, but I wouldn't be surprised if a step up in the conditioning program under larranaga revealed more injuries. The "Scramble" defense requires good conditioning and maybe the players' bodies aren't ready for it. It is unfortunate that both centers are injured, not like it was split and to different positions

UM didn't get put on probation in 1995 for what Uncle Luke was doing, they were put on probation because of pell grant fraud. A lot of the "crimes" don't matter to the NCAA.

As for Canes Baseball, that's what I'm talking about baby! My favorite sport at The U. Let me tell you all something. This team will have the best pitching staff in the country. Radziewski, Whaley, EJ and Ewing will all be stronger and a year older and have the experience. Eric Erickson is indeed returning this year and will be a lethal left handed arm. Erickson is 23-6 in his career at UM with an ERA a shade over 3.00. He's a bulldog and a winner. He got a 6th year of eligibilty from the NCAA. I talked to him and he told me he's healthier than ever. His arm is fully rested. Plus Miami got Andy Suarez, a 9th round left handed pitcher selected by the Blue Jays, to come to UM instead of go to the pros. Suarez has nasty stuff. He's the highest drafted player to come to the U since Jemile Weeks in 2005 when he was drafted in the 8th round by the Brewers. 6 legit pitchers!!!

Vishnu - great to hear from you. Road trips are my favorite part of being with WVUM. Best experience is taking the team chartered flights. Man those are awesome. So much leg room and no airport security. Strangest story was when I went to Cameron Indoor stadium last year at Duke. The broadcasting takes place in the rafters so it was a unique view to announce bball from to say the least. Funniest and strangest part is you need to climb a latter to get to the broadcast booth. So imagine Dick Vitale climbing a latter. That's what he did and that's what I did. Just a surreal experience.

Lost in football being the glamour sport is that basketball is alleged to have committed the greater crimes. 10 G's for Dequan Jones? That's bigger than most of the football crimes. I'm just not sure how to untangle a new boss of the program. It seems stupid to punish people who weren't involved with the program. I can only hope they penalize Jones and Frank Haith, not the current staff and kids
And for your other question, I think that's the only choice. Instead of going with prototypical big men you have to go with athletic forwards and try to out-speed and out-athlete them.

I addressed this in the last chat. You have to make taking money from a booster the worse option. So you do that with harsher penalties and financial compensation. I understand as a broadcast journalism major that my value to the university is not the same as that of Jacory Harris, who has a jersey selling in the book store. I'm not as valuable. I don't have 70,000 people eager to view and pay for my work (although I wish I did). So their value needs to be compensated appropriately.
Posted by: ChrisWittyngham | August 24, 2011 at 08:35 PM
Slingblade - Coach L may have to tinker with his game plan if he loses some key cogs on his roster. It will be uptempo and the team will be mentally tougher. No more blowing big time leads.
TLuv- I'm against even giving athletes stipends. Regular students survive, so can they. Remember they get the best tutors to help them as well.
MiamiCane - I can't say if performers get paid or not because I don't know. Not too familiar with the music school

I'm thinking with the quality of the backs and the quality of the O-line (both groups free of potential suspension), I imagine Jedd Fisch knows that's the stronger area of his offense. In his media time, he's spent a lot of time talking about taking advantage of strengths and weaknesses, so he knows that's his strength. I imagine the team is in the top 25 in rushing. You can see just by looking at him that Lamar Miller is a SPECIAL player. I just remember expecting him to pop off 6 yards a carry in my seat in the student section. He's going to have a great year and a great pro career
Posted by: ChrisWittyngham | August 24, 2011 at 08:37 PM
Ohio Cane - I could definitely see Al leaving and frankly I think he deserves to leave if they Canes get punished hard. He's a man of integrity. His alma matta is Penn State and Paterno is getting old. He could be a Nittany Lion next

I think it would be the opposite of progress. Although there are probably bundles of great, young, motivated college coaches, Golden has a level of organization and a level of passion for this job and university that's very impressive. He seems to have the Packaging/Administration part of this job down but we first need to see what kind of coach he is on game day before we get up or down about his potential departure.
Posted by: ChrisWittyngham | August 24, 2011 at 08:40 PM
Caned - No one has been cleared yet on the current UM squads (basketball or football)
I think hands down no brainer the answer is Anthony Chikillo as far as having the biggest impact as a frosh. He has the physical tools to succeed, has UM in his blood (3rd generation Hurricane) and has a tireless motor. Plus you got to think about all the players on the defensive line alleged (Ojomo, Forston, Robinson). He'll get plenty of reps
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:40 PM
If you are against flat out paying the athletes. How do you feel about them being able to sell stuff that is THEIR property whether physical or itellectual. As of now they arent able to profit off their "likeness" being used in video games (which EA makes a boatload from) as well as their game worn uni's or autographs. I find it quite absurd they cant sell their own stuff yet someone could go to Canesfest this saturday, get all the players to sign a helmet and then turn around and sell it. Everyone else is allowed to make money off them but they are denied this opportunity. Seems patently unamerican. Thoughts?
Posted by: 3G Cane | August 24, 2011 at 08:42 PM
Tight end I like is Blake Ayles. Brennan Carrol knows him from their days at USC together. Although apparently Blake has been nicked up to use a Shannon term. So that may stunt his growth.
Player I expect to be even more productive this year is Lamar Miller. He was my ACC Player of the Year pick. He should get 25 touches a game and be the first Cane since 2002 to tally 1,000 plus yards

Canerock - There was a sense of entitlement under Randy. Philosophy changed once Al stepped on campus in December. The UTough program squeezed every ounce out of the players. This team won't be tired in the 4th quarter now. It is a grind as they like to tweet. Golden said the team trailed in the 4th quarter 6 times last year and lost all 6 games. This year their legs or lower extremities if you will, will be stronger

Thoughts?
--
Couldn't agree with you more. What's most offensive is they try and pass off like it's not Jacory Harris' jersey while putting his number on it. This was the most poignant scene in the Fab Five documentary that ESPN did. Chris Webber walking down the street and seeing his jersey in a store window selling for 80 dollars and not being able to afford lunch. That's ridiculous. Their likeness is being used in video games and jersey sales and they don't make a penny off it.
As I told TLuv earlier, they need to be paid their value to the university based on what the program takes in. Not all of it because there are lots of expenses that football brings and other programs that need to be funded, but how many more examples do you need that something needs to be done about this.

MiamiCane - the program will be worse off than last decade. It's logical. Think about how the social media that's available to high schoolers, recruiting services with rankings. Times have changed now and info is more accessible. Kids and parents will know everything wrong with programs and may not want to send their kid here. That's just the facts and the times of today
Posted by: Justin Antweil | August 24, 2011 at 08:52 PM
86Cane - I feel most sorry for Golden because let's face it, the U is synonymous with football. Shawn is more of a figurehead and Jim's in a tough spot but he knew coming to coach Miami woulddn't be easy.
I think Donna has to take more responsibilty. She is the only common denomicator with the years Nevin Shapiro was involved

Chris: Have U seen the UM women's tennis, diving and volleyball team players lately? Now those are sports teams at UM that we may want to pay closer attention to in the near future.
I'm jus sayin'...

Lets cut through all the BS about protecting the integrity of amateur athletics and get to the center of what this is really all about, the NCAA keeping a tight grip on the enormous amount of money they reap off the backs of college athletes. Instead of punishing innocent kids and entire programs for the actions of a few how about just imposing substantial fines and/or severely punishing the adults that shouldnt be allowing it to happen. If you start handing out lifetime bans to coaches, boosters, etc this stuff would stop happening real quick. Thoughts?

So will these allegations clouding over the football team put a damper on fan support at the home games or should we expect the same as every year, the numbers in attendance being in inverse correlation to what week in the season it is and how many losses have been racked up to that corresponding point?

What are the chances the football program is worse off in loss of scollies than the days when Butch brought us back? If Golden leaves and we are dead for 3 years can the program survive?
--
If you lose the coach and the program for 3 years you'll lose a sports director (Just kidding). But then you'd become SMU, who won their first bowl game in 2009, 22 years after they received the death penalty

Justin and/or Chris,
I've heard the players say that they're schoolin' and ballin' from sunrise to way after sundown. So my question is:
Do you guys notice a difference in how much time the players put into football under Coach Golden, as opposed to Coach Shannon?
--
I'm not certain. All evidence suggests this, but I don't know enough about how Shannon did things to make this assumption. I would think that Golden's better organizational skills/stronger demands would lead to this, but we can never know enough about what happened behind closed doors.

Posted by: TLuv | August 24, 2011 at 09:01 PM
3G Cane - You are right the adults need the blame not the kids. I'm just stunned nobody realized or raised on eye brow over Shapiro's character. For Kirby Hocutt to say he was just a booster and was allowed to do X, Y, Z since he was a Golden Cane is nonsense. You don't treat someone who donates at minimum 30,000 dollars a year to your school. You schmooze with them, get to know them, have lunch with them, make them really part of the U family. Don't just ignore them and only care about their name when it's on the bottom of checks. The whole UM staff is to blame. And UM needs to look at the mirror. It's about self-policing. Maybe if UM was less worried about the APR and more worried about outsiders this wouldn't have happened

Do I really have to choose? I feel terrible for all of them. They all took what they thought were promotions and got thrown into the center of a scandal that they weren't any part of and their ability to their jobs may be affected by the scandal. So I'll cop out and say all of them.
I don't know how much the University President can know. Probably just took checks from him like she would any other booster. So hard for her to have a grasp on what the individuals are doing when she's so concerned about the greater institution. I'm sure she's not hitting up the south beach nightclubs to find out the information herself. Only way she can be blamed is if she knew and she ignored it

Everyone involved is getting a nice deal, what incentive do they have to change it? I think that incentive is the bleepstorm that occurred this summer. At this point it would be ridiculous if they didn't change anything.

The attendance has been poor since the team moved to Sun Life(less) Stadium. I miss the OB.
As far as which beat writers I admire. Two come to mind. Manny Navarro and Chris Stock are hands down better than the rest. Manny and Stock are two of the hardest working people I've been around in the industry. Manny is ubiquitious and all over the place. Also a great guy too. Same with Stock. He's created InsideTheU.com from scratch and developed great sources and publsihes articles at a rapid rate.
As far as broadcasters I look up to. I like a lot and tkae pieces from each one to develop my own unique style. My favorite is Ian Eagle. He's funny but knows what to do when the game is on the on the line.
