Yes, I know that the 2011 college football season is about to get started and many meaningless NFL pre-season games have already been all over our television screens these past few weekends.
Football fans all across the Country are focused on the here and now and can be found getting their swag on as they cling to their irrefutable belief that THEIR team is the one that will go undefeated and bring home the big prize this season: A BCS Championship and the respect and glory that accompanies it.
After all every team is still undefeated in August, right?
Still, the college football recruiting race never sleeps and keeps running full speed ahead even as a new football season full of hope and promise is just getting started.
Now that your Miami Hurricanes may be facing some potentially serious NCAA sanctions for past sins committed by former and current UM players who were alleged to receive extra benefits from booster Nevin Shapiro everyone is wondering what impact the NCAA investigation and possible penalties will have on next year's recruiting class.
The Florida HS Football (FHSF) web site is one of the best sites on the Internet for following prep sports action and keeping up to date with the college football recruiting game all across the Sunshine State.
The FHSF web site can be found here: http://www.floridahsfootball.com/
Here is a list of the 19 recruits (of the Hurricanes' 22 total verbal commits so far) who are from Florida that are verbally committed to Miami for the 2012 class according to FHSF:

The FHSF site also lists 8 players from Florida that have signed with the Florida Gators and 7 players from the Sunshine State who have signed with the Florida State Seminoles. Those combined numbers do not equal the total of 19 players that are verbally committed to the Miami Hurricanes.
The entire list of Florida high school football players who have verbally committed to NCAA schools can be found here: http://floridahsfootball.com/recruiting/commitments/2012/index.html
Expect Miami to sign the maxium number of players in 2012 as the large and highly acclaimed yet underachieving #1 ranked 2008 class graduates after this season and Hurricane head coach Al Golden looks to restock the roster with local South Florida bred talent.

3G: North of Atlanta. Went to a small school with no football team (Niagara University) near Niagara Falls.
Hated the Irish, had to adopt a team as far away from them (philosophically) as I could - that's how I settled on 'Canes.
Loved the way our safeties became LBs, our LBs defensive ends, etc. Got hooked on the speed and the defensive intensity, and guys like Eddie Brown back in the day.
Fan since '81.
Gotta run, P51 scene on Saving Private Ryan coming up. Nothing like the sound of a Rolls-Royce Merlin engined doing a low pass at 400+ mph!

If there are sanctions placed on UM, Florida State and Florida are going to get such a short-term boost it will be crazy. When Miami was on probation and trying to rebuild from 1995-2000, Florida or Florida State went on to compete in six consecutive national championship games.

Anything anyone said to the investigators is just a guess. For all we know these players are being cleared for lack of evidence.
Yahoo claimed that they had substatiated evidence on every player listed in their article, but most had nothing more than a phone call log and old bowling alley bar tab receipts.
For several of the players the only thing listed was "Declined Facebook friend request"????? What the hell is that??? Nevin says the kid received a benefit, the kid declines an interview and Yahoo somehow concludes that their is enough evidence to smear the kid in the expose of the program.
I read somewhere else today that the stories must be true because the former players in the NFL have all said "no comment"!!
Most of the most damaging allegations fall outside of the statute of limitations which is why I feel they are trying to invoke the "willful violations" clause.
If we go into Maryland and 5-6 of the 8 players who are currently unavailable end up playing then I'll feel a lot better than I did yesterday about the severity of the situation.
Go 'canes!

Robert Marve's Dad said his son was not given limited immunity. We don't have any definitive confirmation that anyone was given immunity. CBS reported yesterday that some of the players MAY HAVE been given immunity, but there was no proof to back up the guess. Several news organizations ran with that story as if it were proof that immunity had been given.
That is the problem with this entire investigation, Miami has been tried, convicted, and sentenced to death in the court of public opinion. If all of the suspended players are back by OSU then Lucy is gonna have some serious splanin' to do!!
Go 'canes!

Clint always reminded me of the stupid loud mouth bozo when he was in school who didn't know when to tone the, "look at me," routine down for his own good. Did Yahoo seriously have a declined friend request as their only substantiating evidence on that smear for some of these players, really? Too freaking funny!

Spence in my mind is undoubtedly the heart of that Cane D .. best player out there hands down
I agree with others on what all exactly has Ray Ray done to give him all the hype?
Made some nice tackles in practice or during scrimmages over the past couple of months?
He had that nice knock on DeMarco Murray in the Oklahoma game ... but it was more right place, right time (which is a good thing, b/c he was coming up for run support) when Murray was in the air, coming down and Ray Ray was right there
I still think that tackle VTelemaque put on Roddy Jones of GTech was nicer than the majority of what Ray Ray has done since being on the field .. that, and the fumble recovery off a deflection vs. UNC this past year at the Canes goal line ... and when he knocked the ball out of Donovan Varner's hands on the sideline hit ... and the 2 INTs against Duke

Spence - out. RayRay - out, etc. etc - out. All out on UMs end. They are sitting them proactively rather than retroactively because the NCAA will in all likelihood make a determination regatdig eligibility more quickly when the university takes such steps. This is just a standard move and expected move by the university. The real meat comes when the NCAA gives word on these kids.

This makes a bad situation seem a little better:
"In the short term, the schedule gives Miami two breaks in getting the ineligible players back before it gets steep in mid-September: One, the 'Canes have two extra days on the rest of the country before the season opener at Maryland on Labor Day, Sept. 5, which is two extra days for exiled players to be cleared; and two, they follow that with a bye week the following Saturday. That leaves a little over three full weeks between today and a Sept. 17 visit from Ohio State, the first of a six-week stretch that includes dates with Kansas State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Georgia Tech. If at least a few of the "Shapiro 12" aren't back in the fold by the time the Buckeyes come to town, you know it's going to be a very, very long year."

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 26, 2011 at 09:45 AM
Eight not 13 right? Already asking for reinstatement. It's been printed everywhere the U was on to this guy back in 2007 and his contact withe players was curtailed dramatically after Randy took over.
Know what that is? Institutional control.
F this fire Shalala talk. This school is on it's way to being a top 25 private school in the country. Our medical school is becoming world renowned. She is a fund raising machine.
The football team is a pimple on an elephant's ass when it comes to importance overall. The whole "she should have known" b.s. is hysterical. That's like asking Bill Gates about gossip heard in the lunch room at Microsoft's headquarters.
We may get tagged for the 2003 crap, even though it's beyond the statute, just so the NCAA can save face. But we aren't losing any of these kids long term. They got them for spitting on the sidewalk and that's it.
It will all be fine.

If you're only counting private schools, Miami's probably not that far off. If you're talking Top 25 overall, don't hold your breath. It only just cracked into the first tier according to US News.
But you're right: on almost any objective measure, UM continues to improve on Shalala's watch. That includes athletic compliance, if not winning. She's not getting canned.

Ohio..I read where Golden say they can still practice, so that doesnt mean he is cleared...
Miami coach Al Golden confirmed the move Friday morning without revealing the number of reinstatements being sought, saying the school sent paperwork to the NCAA on Thursday to begin the process.
"They're eligible to practice," Golden said Friday. "We have filed paperwork to the NCAA as of late last night, which is part of the normal process. ... The only entity that can reinstate them is the NCAA. So now we've done our part. We're waiting. Of course, there's going to be follow-ups from the NCAA standpoint. We've done our part from this end, and it's up to the NCAA to reinstate them."

I realize everyone thinks Ray & Spence are indespensible but really what have they done on consistant basis since they've been here? Ray has never consistantly started since has been here. Spence has been above average but not great. I mean where were these dudes when we were coughing up 5 runs of over 7o yards last year and we were like 9Th in the ACC in rush defense. What's the worse we could do without them, finish the same? Look i'm pulling for these guys but enough about them being beast. Hell, if they were beast they'd be All-Americans and at least 1ST team all ACC.

I saw on Rivals that DE Trent Taylor is opening his recruiting back up

Tenn is on his nuts. He's going to visit rocky top for the Montana game.

A healthy Spence makes a big difference to the quality of UM's defense. Ray-Ray, I agree, is not nearly as much of a difference-maker. All the talk about Ray-Ray comes from the fact that he's a big guy with tremendous range and athleticism; he's not any sort of Ed Reed or Sean Taylor (yet).

Well, LSU just suspended their QB and LB. There is now a warrant out for their arrest. Must of found blood on dem shoes. Sorry, but caving a guy's face in is not self-defense...

Yep. They turned themselves in. Bar employees said victim threw first punch. Don't think that'll help much in court when they get battery charges

There was a coach who once said "Nothing good happens after midnight."
Hang out in bars late at night and eventually something is gonna go down in a big city or even a small college town.

According to those who are actually THERE at practice RayRay has been the most impressive player on D in practice along with Ojomo.
And of all the NFL scouts who have been peeking around Miami the pro scouts have him #1 among potential UM draft picks.
I'm jus sayin...

Ohio, that was, finally, an article with decent perspective. Thanks.

Sure, they turned themselves in -- when the police called their lawyer and their coach and requested that they do so. Basically, they were given the option of avoiding being seen in handcuffs, and they took it.
Posted by: dj moonbat | August 26, 2011 at 01:22 PM
UMike - don't believe what you see in Rivals, Scout or whatever ... rarely holds water, esp. this time of the year
Opening up their recruitment really means nothing when it comes to verbals for the next year
That's their job. To drum up subscriptions and keep people constantly guessing .... when in fact, they really don't know any more than anyone else
The kids play them like puppets when they want
Perfect example - Chick.

Absolutely. I wasn't giving them praise for turning themselves in, just telling everyone here who didn't know.

I think the mis-perception with Ray Ray is the comparison to ST.
Genetically...IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Fundamentally...IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Athletically...IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE.
I think RR is more Kenny Phillips than ST, and hell, Kenny Phillips isn't a bad drop-off at all.

Comparing Ray Ray to Sean T before he even got here was a disservice to the kid. He'd never live up to that standard and IMO he hasnt even come close yet.

So where are we on cleared players. It VT the only confirmed?

Sure, Ray-Ray is two inches taller. Weighs about the same. So he isn't as muscular as ST. He's certainly not massively slower.

Again, a couple inches taller than KP, and about the same weight. But I'm pretty sure Ray-Ray is faster than KP, whereas he's slower than ST.
The big problem with Ray-Ray is that he's (so far) undeveloped, and just playing on the fact that he's got this incredible, lanky frame that can get him to the ball in a hurry. He doesn't seem to know what to do a lot of the time, and can make up for it with talent. If he actually pulls his crap together, I don't think the ST comparisons will seem so inapt.

As we have all learned...perhaps they can take their other visits...get all their illegal money, dinners, strippers and hookers and then go to a different school and rat the others out to the NCAA and get immunity...
Posted by: Texascane | August 26, 2011 at 01:58 PM
Ohio- I've seen a number of fans posting or tweeting the names of the eligible 4. The most credible lists (just my opinion) are:
Telemaque, Vernon, Forston,,Ojomo
or
TB,VT,RR,DD

The Texas sized loophole....
If I was a recuit I'd go on OV's to all rival schools of where I'm going to commit, get a bunch of improper benefits and then get them all in trouble. Talk about a 5 star recruit!
Posted by: 3G Cane | August 26, 2011 at 02:13 PM
Everyone is always talking about Ray Ray getting hype but hasn't done anything. Take a look at his stats from last year, he was productive. He hasn't been the game changer that most are looking for, i.e Ed Reed and Sean Taylor. I feel last year coaching staff hindered this team in all areas as the proof is the number of players that went to the NFL and most appear to be holding their own. The talent is in Miami but development along with conditioning have been lacking. With the new staff, I am expecting all the kids to step up big time and play football like they are supppose to. It is not always the players, it could be coaches and schemes that don't allow players to play to their strengths and potential. Go Canes

Just wondering how long it will be until the NCAA starts paying recruits to work undercover for them to report these violations...slippery slope...
Posted by: Texascane | August 26, 2011 at 02:40 PM
I asked Papa Cane - Is Telemaque still the only cleared player confirmed?
He replied - I have heard 4 other names that should be next. Won't post until sure.

Even better set up a FAKE street agent or runner or booster to see how many coaches they could catch on the take or knowingly steering recruits to them for the $$$.

Greetings all!
Not worried yet about MD, this thing needs to play out first. I do have a feeling we will be w/o a few key guys for an extended period of time.
By the way, anyone have any advice for us amateur NY'ers riding out a hurricane? Supposedly its going to be the end of the world on Sunday.

Don't think NCAA wants to go there but I can certainly see Yahoo or ESPN doing it...or a rival school?
Yikes...

Matt in NY- I think we're bad people to ask, we throw parties when hurricanes come through.

Forget water and batteries, load up on guns and ammo!
Spray paint "You loot, I shoot!" on your garage door as soon as the storm passes. Not only does it keep the criminals guessing, it gives you serious "street cred" points with your neighbors!
Go 'canes!

Susan Deagan was just on Outside The Lines...she makes an interesting point..the NCAA CANNOT use the Yahoo story as evidence..they can use it as a guide, BUT they have to dig up their own evidence..if no one talks we may not be that bad of..maybe
