As the student voice of the University of Miami, WVUM radio fills an important role in keeping UM students and Hurricane fans alike informed about what's happening on and off campus and inside the world of UM athletics. Here is a brief summary of the station from the WVUM web site:
"WVUM is the non-commercial and fully student-run radio station broadcasting out of the University of Miami. Since its inception in 1967, as a pirate radio station hidden in the Mahoney dormitory, "The Voice” has evolved into a nationally recognized leader in college radio, broadcasting eclectic music programming, public affairs/news content and excellent sports programs."
Over the last four years Canespace and WVUM have developed a very positive relationship that has proven to be mutually beneficial to Hurricane fans not only in South Florida but literally all across the United States and around the world.
Justin Antweil, the previous Sports Director at WVUM, was a good friend of Canespace and a solid partner in providing sports coverage for Hurricane fans. With Justin's recent graduation from Miami (he returned to his native New York where he has become a serious Tweetaholic) the radio station was required to conduct an extensive search for someone to fill his position.
The radio station eventually selected UM Sophomore Chris Wittyngham for that important role at WVUM. Almost immediately we looked to form a new relationship with Chris to continue our excellent partnership and to ensure that we keep bringing you the news you can use when it come to UM athletics from our exclusive on campus connection at WVUM.
Just last week Canespace agreed to become an underwriter for WVUM sports programming and will be sponsoring part of the pre-game segment of all UM football games this season. We are excited about this new venture and hope that all Canespacers will tune in to listen to WVUM before, during and after UM football games this year.
WVUM has lively weekly sports talk shows such as their signature Ibis Sports Weekly which will be on the air every Friday from 6-7 PM. They will debut the all new "WVUM Sports Saturday" airing Saturdays from 11 AM to Noon and also return with Beyond The Scope, Sundays from Noon to 1 PM.
Hurricane fans can tune in to all things WVUM on 90.5 FM or http://www.wvum.org.
Tonight at 8 PM we will have a chance to catch up with Chris for one of our now famous Canespace Q&A sessions. Please post your questions on the blog comments section beginning at 8 PM and remember to hit your browser's "refresh button" to keep up with the fast paced LIVE chat.

Under Shannon, the team always seemed to relax after a big win and come out flat and lose to an underdog, what is the level of focus around the team with K-state coming into town? Are we in for a let down or a focused effort?

Al Golden is talking like Oklahoma is coming in and they're 10 point underdogs at home. I think he wants the team to play the same week in and week out and is stressing that this is the first normal preparation period they've had all year. Whether or not that translates on to the field remains to be seen

Golden said he should get back into practice some time next week and for now is wearing the yellow injury jersey. The ideal is to get some playing action against Bethune Cookman to ready him for a full load @ Virginia Tech, but like neck injuries back injuries are sensitive and very tentative. Could be next week, could be 3 weeks from now. You never know

Following the canespacers I have surmised that we are having a hard time recruiting bigtime defensive tackles. I can't remember the last time we sucessfully acquired one. Maybe Forston, but he has underwhelmed me so far. What gives?

The obvious here is Lamar Miller. My goodness is he outstanding. I saw this coming last year. But after that, it was only one game but Sean Spence's impact has clearly been felt. Jojo Nicolas has also played very well
I'm surprised by how quickly and drastically the special teams improved. They seemed prime for at least calamity per game and everything has been very solid thus far. The unspectacular throwing numbers have not been surprising and the spectacular running numbers weren't either.

Not really sure. You look at the long list of d-tackles that have come from UM you'd think there'd be some sort of pipeline but there are some holes in this team left by poor coaching, poor recruiting, and poor development. I imagine depth at every position is something on the Golden agenda. (Crosses fingers NCAA sanctions don't involve losing too many scholarships)

In my opinion, a coach is judged from week to week and in-game adjustments. Only a certain amount of preparation can prepare you for a game and in game and after a game is when coaches work is most necessary. By that criteria, defensive backs coach Paul Williams certainly earns my award for that. After his defensive backfield got decimated in week 1, they held bauserman/miller to a historically horrific passing effort. That's laudable in my opinion

I don't know. A lot of quality candidates. He may not even be the most qualified at his position as Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina and LaMichael James of Oregon are very well qualified not to mention the quarterbacks that are the ones likeliest to win the award anyway, it seems like a long shot now. However, he does have the talent to be there if he can do what he did against Ohio State every week. At the very least, he has next year before he goes to the pros (no question in my mind he leaves early).

Chris...My pick for assistant coach so far is...wait for it...wait for it...Michael Barrow!
Special teams has been lights out with two completely new key players (Botts and Wieclaw) and kick coverage has been excellent. Replacing Bosher was a KEY concern going into 2011 and that has been put to rest so far.
Now IF they can get a few returns going (they will against KSU, I have that as a fact) then Barrow will be a MAJOR factor in the Canes 2011 season.

I agree with you. Morris has the better quarterback physical skill set, but apparently Golden has either placed a value on experience and his command of the operation. I don't think he wants the quarterback to win or lose the game and with that running game, I don't necessarily disagree either.

I think Forston is fine. Not 100% because those are delicate injuries but I haven't seen anything that would suggest otherwise. Plus I don't see many football players around campus due to practice. They do a lot of summer school so their coursework load isn't as intense during the fall. You see baseball players in the fall and football players in the spring
And if Seantrel can contribute this season that's more than I would have expected. Still would fight him, slip in my own urine, and concuss myself before the fight would start

Not much at all. Miami is a 13 point favorite. They're a team that perennially wins 6 or 7 games every year. However, the are a division one team so they shouldn't be taken lightly. Miami is better and should win handily

Nicolas would move back to corner for Ray Ray, so maybe Lee Chambers sees a reduced role. Vernon would move back to starting DE, so that moves Marcus Robinson or Andrew Smith back. Those guys will still play, but perhaps at a reduced role

I actually thought he was the same guy. Mentioned more than once on the broadcast that he looked like he was reacting instead of anticipating again. He completes the throw to Byrd that ended up being an interception if he throws it earlier. Quarterbacks need to be cerebral enough to see throws before they happen or have enough arm strength to get the ball to a receiver even if he sees it a second late. Right now, I don't think Jacory has either, but that's just my analysis from my view in the press box and I would love to sit with a coach and him explain to me how I'm wrong. I think right now they just trust Jacory more to run the offense, which isn't unfair, but I don't think he's the better pocket passer.
By the way, I love talking to Jacory. He's the best interview by far on the team even at a position as personality-deprived as that one and I root for that guy to succeed so much. He's clearly grown as a human being and shows so much maturity and candor and clearly has an unparalleled fondness for his teammates.
As for Ryan Williams, I haven't seen much of him, but I imagine he and Stephen will compete for the job. I hope Stephen takes this experience and focuses more on learning what it takes to run an offense well. I feel like they've had to teach him that and that's why they probably trust Jacory more because he knows how to do that by now.
I love quarterback talk by the way. I like talking about the important positions

I'm very conflicted on this. I remember how physically ill I felt after reading that story, but I quickly moved on to processing the details. I don't think enough of how he got the information was included in the story, but unfortunately when your dealing with delicate information like this people are reluctant to reveal their identity. I will tell you this, Robinson's body of work is impeccable and other journalists how have taken out a career in this field and have studied this took it seriously.
I think Canes fans have misplaced their anger here. They blamed the messenger, which was unnecessary. I think the two concerns here should have been 1. How did this happen? and 2. Is this relevant and salient enough to justify legitimate NCAA penalty?
As for the abortion stuff, it's a very heavy accusation to lob, but from talking to the editor of that story on the radio and listening to every interview robinson and the yahoo staff did that week, I think they were very judicious about what they put in. They probably had tons more that they didn't put in, so I think that what they did put in there was for the most part true, as proven by the NCAA penalties to the current players

I still believe in Stephen Morris and I thought the first two games proved it. Very different defense, but the things I liked about Stephen showed, and the thinks I didn't trust about Jacory didn't show. However, Golden and Fisch want a game manager, which may not be the worst thing.

Also saw it on the sideline throw to Hurns that ended up being intercepted. It's actually the same problem Chad Henne has with the Dolphins (I know I opened of can of worms. He's my least favorite athlete in sports) and that problem is that he has to be certain the throw will be there before he throws it. In a sport that fast, if you're a second late, it's catastrophic. Especially without the arm strength

I think if U did a POLL 60% or more of Canes fan would want M17 over J12.
But we ain't coaching the team and I think Golden thinks that J12 is the glue that holds this team together and also gives him the BEST chance to win TODAY so he is going with it knowing that they aren't winning any championships this year or next.
IF the NCAA spanks us hard then he realizes it could be a five year plan not a two year plan.

About my Robinson answer,
I mentioned the part about the allegations being true so as to prove that the article wasn't entirely made up like certain canes fans were claiming. I don't think the abortion claim would have been printed (considering how delicate that was) without definitive proof. The point is that we don't know what the proof is and without that knowledge I don't really want to pass judgment on that being a baseless claim

btw, when someone propagates information that suggests something extraordinary, which has been unsubstantiated, and is unsubstant_iable_--like the prostitution and abortion stuff--it isn't blaming the messenger and we aren't "wrong." We're blaming the propagator of irresponsible bs.

I doubt there's ever going to be any agreement on how deep the rabbit hole went, as far as violations go, until the evidence (if concrete and substantive, as I presume it not to be--evidence has to be, well, _evident_) is put forth. In any event I appreciate your journalistic viewpoint Chris and I think it's a huge tension point, a microcosm of the issue of journalistic responsibility. Duty to print X because of weight it carries vs. duty to withhold printing X due to weight it carries.
Thanks for your time Chris!

Chrsi
If this article had been just about trips to strip clubs, or other benefits, and did not include an "abortion" allegation, would it have sold? The abortion allegation was ridiculously shakey, based ONLY on Shapiro's statement, and no reputable newspaper would have published it. Without DNA evidence from the reputed father, how can anyone say a prostitutes pregancy is due to any one man 2 months after the alleged incident? That is what makes the story suspect, because she worked at least 4 or 5 days a week thereafter.
College football players going to strip clubs is nothing new. It is rarely documented for sure, but it happens everywhere. Smart boosters pay cash. It happens. I am not saying it is right or anything but it happens.
That is why we are not in "kill the messenger" mode but we do argue that such an inflammatory allegation should not have been printed without cooboration, which, in the case of this allegation, was only that Shapiro told his girlfriend that he spent the money for that reason. But whatever. If you choose to believe that everything Shapiro said was true, and Charles Robinson should win some journalism of the year award for making such a serious, defamatory allegation without sufficient proof, then so be it. I just think our football players deserve more support given the lack of proof.
On a football note, this is a good read about the Wildcats and their plans for the game.

Susan Miller Degnan = Boring and dump as ever...Lucky to be on the payroll at the Herald. We don't learn much from her, do we?
She has to write about the same stories and repeat the same lines over and over, ask stupid questions to coaches and players. She likes the negative stuff...

Thanks guys today is going to be a busy day.....3G does your sister live around campus?
If the school gets sanctions, I am sure the abortion part will play a very little role. Strippers, drugs, and abortions do however sell magazines. People can't get enough of these over sensationalized stories but get bored of them just as quickly. Notice how this story really just kinda died out.
We will get sanctions because of @sses like Hurtt and Holcutt.

K-State fans got their chests all pumped up about their "#1 D in the nation". Lamar and this O will deflate that quickly.
Getting that confident against those 2 opponents is like winning the special olympics with no disability. It just makes U look stupid.

No way I would take Stephen over Mackey at this point. J12 looks much more comfortable in the offense and seems to be managing "the process" better. If we can get him to make quicker decisions on the deep ball we will be in business.
Hope he doesn't make me eat my words!
