Five teams overall lost games I didn't call for them to lose last week and find themselves looking to next year before month one of this one is even done, four of the them from the ACC and the fifth across the ocean in a erector set aluminum stadium:
1) NC State gets destroyed 44-14 by the Bearcats on Thursday night in their first trip to Cincinnati. In hindsight, this was an ominous portent of things to come in the ACC this week on the Shortlist, we all should have heeded the signs, as well as Tammy Flores' warnings but were too haughty to even consider it. For that, we all owe someone a big apology.
2) Maryland decides to let Temple of all teams construct a woodshed in College Park for a 38-7 thrashing behind it. That about sums up the sorry current state of Hurricane football right there nice and succinctly better than any clever quip I could come up with instead, doesn't it? At least the NCAA can help keep them marginally respectable despite being the worst dressed football team in history.
3) Miami can't cross an extra three feet of football field as the clock winds down at home, and as a result, loses to Kansas State 28-24 as the Al Golden honeymoon period is now done in just under a month. Hi, I'm BCS auto-qualifier football, Al Golden. You might remember me from such classic seasons in Charlottesville as when you lost seven, five, five, four and five games from 2001 to 2005 as the youngest defensive coordinator in FBS play. I'm here today to inform you that the vast majority of your fan-base now officially has better things to do with their leisure time in Miami this year than watch your team play and you'll be lucky to have 30,000 fans cheering your team on the rest of the season at home. While winning seven ACC games, the conference title game and playing in a BCS bowl this year would settle everything down, your coaching history and the continuing trends your detractors were worried about when you came over from Philadelphia initially suggest that things will instead begin to spiral down the drain as NCAA sanctions hinder your recruiting, on field results, and fan support in a vicious reverberating cycle that will only end when you take another job somewhere else higher up the food-chain, though the likelihood of that happening when you fail at UM is null and void. While no sane person could reasonably expect you to cook dinner without getting your own ingredients, you coach at Miami, which is never noted for having sane people as fans and thus, will most likely not be afforded multiple opportunities to assemble several more underwhelming recruiting classes in order to grind out Big 10 (plus two) style victories while playing a 3-4 defensive front and qualifying for some backwater hamlet bowl game like they were happy to accept at your previous coaching stops. Basically, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place, is there a chapter in Deserve Victory, with orange and green on the cover of course, that covers this situation and if so, what does it say exactly? Thanks for listening and enjoy the rest of your coaching career in Coral Gables, preferably by hanging half a hundred on Bethune Cookman's version of the Wildcats in the manner you should have done on the Kansas State's version instead.
4) Virginia is now 0-2 against traditional FBS power Southern Miss as they fall in the friendly confines of Scott Stadium 30-24. The signature win of Mike London era so far? The 16 point underdog win against Randy Shannon's Miami Hurricanes of course in 2010! Come on, you weren't expecting that big road upset of Indiana this year to be the answer were you? Miami is everybody's national championship, even 10 years removed from its last one!5) FIU makes sure the Hurricane's upset loss isn't the worst one last week in Miami as they fall to the surprisingly competitive Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 36-31 at FIU Stadium. Mario Cristobal's 19-34 career record in only five years as a head coach still compares very favorably to Al Golden's 28-36 record in six years and if he goes on a long-shot run to finish 11-1 in the regular season this year the incremental heat on the head coaching seat in Coral Gables is only going to increase with each win that closes the gap. Did I mention welcome to BCS auto-qualifier football yet Al Golden? Just checking.
Two teams come up with blowout victories at home last week to stay on the Shortlist as they send the visitors packing with their tails and fighting spirit tucked between their legs, as usual, and they are:
1) Arizona State reminds all the, "Southern Cal is the new Miami," parrots out there just how right they really are as they dominate the mediocre, for a very long while now, Trojans 43-22 in Tempe. Dennis Erickson's now gang insignia laden team delivers a big win and I'm sure he had a few to celebrate the occasion afterwards if history is any reliable informer here, as the race for at least second place in the Pac-12 South now heats up as conference play ensues with ASU holding a big trump card they weren't expected to have in their hand at the start of the year.
2) Butch Jones routes the Wolfpack in the Thursday night rematch of the game that got away early in the 2010 season and set the tone for a down year in Cincinnati. His team now appears poised to stay on the Shortlist almost all the way through October and could reach the final month in they can pull off one upset in the Sunshine State thanks to two bye weeks and a manageable schedule otherwise in what will be a bowl season with BCS possibilities.
I call for six teams this week to fall off the Shortlist including last year's champion and a highly ranked top 25 team as conference play is joined in earnest. The six teams in question list as follows:
Auburn, Michigan State, Texas A&M, Kansas, Utah, and Syracuse.
The Shortlist begins the process of grinding down the BCS contenders at an increasing pace as October begins in 2011. Enjoy the games this week and join me back here next week as the Shortlist to the Superdome gets within striking distance of the magic number of only 25 left on it.

Now this, this is interesting, I got it from CBS;
Since Paterno started at Penn State, the automatic qualifying BCS schools with the most head coaching turnover are Miami and Cincinnati, each with 13 coaching changes in the past 45 years -- or a coaching change every 3.46 years.
Since Paterno started at Penn State, Miami has gone through Walt Kichefski, Fran Curci, Peter Elliot, Carl Selmer, Lou Saban, Howard Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis, Larry Coker, Jeff Stoutland and Randy Shannon before Al Golden took over this year.

OGV...wow that is surprising. Let's hope Golden stays a while longer and wins more than most on that list.
Remember this name: Winston Moss.

For the second consecutive year, WQAM, the Michael Irvin Show and the University of Miami are running a special ticket package for a UM home football game.
The Michael Irvin 4-for-$47 Deal is back for this weekend's game against Bethune-Cookman at Sun Life Stadium (Saturday, Oct. 1, 3:30 p.m.). Irvin, as all Hurricane fans know, wore jersey No. 47 during his UM career.
These tickets must be purchased in blocks of four and are available by visiting HurricaneSports.com or TicketMaster.com or by calling 1-800-GO-CANES. Fans can also stop by the UM Ticket Office in the Hecht Athletic Center (5821 San Amaro Drive) on campus, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to get their tickets.

A)Forston?
B)Buchanan?
c)Telemaque?
d)All of them?
It's easy look at the tape stop it restart...look back...

j.w. - Crawford is one of my favorite players ever, my favorite Ray of all time
Hated hearing idiotic people around here calling him a traitor b/c he went to the Red Sox
As if they wouldn't do the same if they were offered the type of money he was .. and it's not like Tampa even offered, they just basically wrote him off as a loss b/c they knew they couldn't afford him
Like 86 said about the Rays being 9 games out of the Wild Card - how in the hell have the Red Sox fallen like they have? esp. with the guys in that hitting lineup
Ellsbury in my opinion is the best all around CF in all of MLB - it's either between him or Kemp, but I give a slight nod to Ellsbury
I thought before the season started that the lineup would look like: Ellsbury, Crawford, Pedroia, AGonz, Youk, Ortiz, who cares about the other 3. Or possibly Ellsbury, Pedroia, Youk, AGonz, Crawford, Ortiz
I dunno what is happening with CC this year. Just gotta get used to his new environment up there - some guys adjust quicker than others, and, some guys just don't adjust at all
I'll still take Crawford back though. Him in LF, Bossman Jr. in CF and Dez Jennings in RF with Joyce or Damon as the DH and Joyce able to come off the bench if needed to play OF
Good to see the hometown kid Joyce hit the go-ahead bomb off former Ray MFIKY Soriano, when they were down. That kid went to Armwood High School and then went on to Florida Southern
Thank you Detroit Tigers for making that trade a couple of years ago

We should have won against KSU just by keying on their qb and made them beat us in the air. When you play an option team... you got to practice going through the defensive progression just like they practice going through the option progression. Over and over again..It just seems like there was too much confusion and to many open spaces. Guys were not doing the same thing in response to how the qb opened up. You just practice and practice it until you surround the qb because you do your progressions better and quicker than they do theirs. Thats how we used to shut the option down in the day..
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | September 28, 2011 at 08:28 AM
We always shut down their best player because we watched them and that was our main goal back in the day.We prided ourselves in taking away their star.

UMike their d backs were coming up in our run lanes ... we play a lot more soft zone this yr than we have in the last ten yrs.
Im not to confident in our linebackers. Maybe we need to recruit bigger guys.. seems like college football has changed ...we used to be successful with fast guys but now offenses run more schemes with multiple formations and a have better passing game...
But theres no excuses for not being able to figure out the option. We should have met them in the back field at the point of the hand off even if it meant run blitzing..

Starting QB's in college and what state they're from...
"Not surprisingly, California (25), Texas (19) and Florida (15) rank first through third in producing this season's starting quarterbacks. When Ohio (eight) and Virginia (seven) are added, that's 74 starters - or 62 percent. No other state has more than five, and, in all, 29 states have produced at least one starter. "

I'm not worried about Golden, he'll get this tuff fixed, I'm more about the defense, which aside from the CB's shouldn't be a problem.

That is why i predicted Miami to win 24-19. That was the average points for / against goint into the K-state game. Until proven otherwise to quote D. Green, the canes "are who we thought they were."
I don't expect anything different this week other.
Anyone who predicts the canes to score over 50 or to keep BCC under 10 is not watching the same team I am.

Dolphins claim RB Steve Slaton off waivers from Texans; he rushed for 1,282 yards in 2008

Slaton can't be any worse than what they have.

I don't know about holding the recruiting class together, already our 2 best LB's are probably on a bannana peel, Brown & Kirby.

Coach D'Onofrio just bench all those 2008 fake A$$ football players
Except for Spence :)
Posted by: SinisterCane | September 28, 2011 at 10:29 AM
And Vaughn Telemaque, you kiddin' me??? there were so many missed tackles that if it weren't for him, the k-state game might not even be that close!

And Tyler Horn
And Travis Benjamin

If we start winning some games we should be able to hold this class together..this staff put together this class after a 7-6 year with an embarrassing loss in the bowl game..i dont think these recruits expect us to win 10 games this year..jmo

As a new coach, you can have a bad record and start selling the #1 thing most big time prospects are interested in, early playing time. Now as a fan, with my team being coached by a new coach, I want D'Onofrio to just bench all those fake A$$ defensive game-plans and win some games by coaching up who's there now and forget the early playing time for the 18 year old recruits in 2012.

Ohio Cane i appreciate all the great infos you provide here on Canespace. We will miss Solar but i am sure he will come back once in a while especially after our victory next week vs. VT.

Oh thanks Q my disgust with Miami sports has left me out of the loop....LOL!
I listened to Joe Rose every morning, can't take it much these days, so to try to stay positive I watch 19 kids and counting on TLC in the mornings. Makes me feel more normal knowing my life is not that crazy. I have to hand it to those parents they really stay positive....if I had 19 kids????
Posted by: canechic | September 28, 2011 at 07:43 PM
Al Golden will right the ship!
Posted by: jack | September 28, 2011 at 07:52 PM
This is just ridiculous, maybe the ACC will tell the Canes showing the U is unsportsmanlike conduct or the NFL telling former players that can't show the U after TD's....silly, isn't football supposed to be fun?

Solar, if you're out there somewhere, this link is for you - my way of saying thanks for your keen wit over the years.
Six - re Moneyball, loved the book, haven't seen the movie, but if you're a baseball nut,and I know you are, then "The Boys of Summer" goes without saying as best sports book ever.

What do ya'll think of the Marlins signing Guillen? I have to admit I'm a bandwagoner when it comes to baseball, but can OG turn it around?

SaveUMFootball Papa Cane
Like I shared with you in the past, I still expect LB Keith Brown to be a Miami Hurricane in 2012. Things did cool off for a bit but OK now
----
Worth posting since there are rumors to the contrary. Corey Long was texted that Brown's Clemson visit went "Great" in reply to his inquiry. Notice "Great," and not "My New #1."
