As the first month of the season ends, only 56 teams are left on the Shortlist to the Superdome and they read when grouped by conference affiliation as such:
Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State, Iowa, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Florida State, Clemson, NC State, Maryland, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Oregon, Stanford, Washington, California, Southern Cal, Arizona State, Utah, Pittsburgh, USF, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Syracuse, Boise State, San Diego State, Wyoming, Houston, Ohio, and FIU.
Four teams escaped from my predictions to fall from Shortlist contention last week and they were:
1) Iowa ignites a huge fourth quarter comeback to stave off elimination at home against Pittsburgh 31-27. Welcome to ACC football 2012 Panthers, you'll fit right in no problem with games like this!
2) Utah posts a Holy War massacre on the road at BYU 54-10 as Norm Chow shows no mercy to his old employer for passing him over after Lavel Edwards retirement. The Pac-10 still made the wrong expansion choice even with this result but it's not like BYU would have been the better choice either.
3) Wyoming barely dodges overtime and escapes with a win in Bowling Green, Ohio, in what could end up being the difference in going bowling during the holidays and staying home for Dave Christensen's Cowboys. Enjoy this week on the Shortlist in Laramie guys, for Saturday you will be purged at the hands of the Cornhuskers of Nebraska.
4) FIU makes it two weeks in a row as Mario Cristobal's Panthers become 2011's Shortlist team you most don't want to see on your schedule as they take down UCF in the state of Florida under-card showdown of the week. If Cristobal continues like this he might have an offer he can't refuse luring him away from his hometown very soon.
Four teams lose and get removed from the Shortlist and the new roll call of infamy looks like this:
1) Northwestern travels to West Point and ends up on the end of the bayonet of the Cadets 21-14. Dan Persa's Achilles tearing celebration continues to wreck havoc on the Wildcats play, I hope the win was worth it last year for them as it holds them back in this one.
2) Shortlist traditional prediction nemesis Connecticut goes 0-2 against BCS teams and falls off the Shortlist quickly this year by losing at home to Iowa State 24-20. At least Paul Pasqualoni will get to avoid some uncomfortable road games every other year with Syracuse's jump to the ACC next year. Oh, wait, that might not be avoidable either now.
3) UCF loses the Florida Shortlist Elimination Showdown with FIU in Miami 17-10 as the Golden Knights still can't find a way to break through against anybody from their home state other than the Owls in Boca. George O'Leary won't get to 11 wins this year but still can make some noise in the conference if they find a way to put this behind them quickly.
4) Bowling Green has a tying extra point try blocked at home against Wyoming to fall 28-27 as Dave Clawson's team now moves on to the daunting part of the schedule this year where they will be underdogs the rest of the way. Letting a chance at a win slip through their fingers such as this one again will destroy any hopes of bowl rewards for the Eagles very quickly down the line.
I call for nine teams are on watch for Shortlist elimination this week and they are the following:
Kentucky, Missouri, Florida State, Arizona State, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, San Diego State, Wyoming, and Ohio.
As the eliminations begin to pick up into month two the Shortlist will begin to pare down entire conferences quicker and quicker until the pecking order for this final season of relative football stability gives way to even more wild chaos than on the field of play any given week.
Enjoy the games this week as your Miami Hurricanes try to stay in the race for another week and join me back here next week as the real separation between contenders and pretenders begins to rearrange the roster here on the Shortlist to the Superdome.

OGV,
I think 'cuse and Pitt have to wait 27 months, 2014, to join ACC competition unless the Big East folds sooner which could happen.

solar, I swore that I had read they had applied and been accepted as of 2012, but I'm in no hurry to start back up the old Big East series with them even though UM has a ton of alums in the 'Cuse neck of the woods who will make the road trip to the Carrier Dome.
VA C, WTF man? You are busting my balls big time tonight for what reason in particular? Here's a little tweak back for you since you've got that salty feeling going on tonight about me: Randy Shannon just had two losses vacated with the UNC sanctions off his record which means even when Golden wins a game to catch a little up to him, Shannon moves even farther ahead of him on the all time coaching win percentage sitting at home collecting his Special-K extension money. Now who's the loser there IYO? Next you're going to call for the 1-0 QB to be benched for the 0-1 backup I bet. Yeah, like that's going to happen anytime soon!
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 20, 2011 at 08:37 PM
OGV,
you most likely correct, The Big East will have to come up with two teams real quick so penalizing Syracuse and Pitt with the buyout, and waiting period would only hurt their conference i guess.

Speak of the Devil! Justin what did U think about Miami's HUGE win over OSU?
Posted by: 86Cane | September 20, 2011 at 09:24 PM
Great way to start the Golden Era. For Miami to get 200 yards rushing against a perrenial stout defense like OSU is amazing. I don't care who was suspended. Defensive game plan was a lot better. Thanks to Sean Spence. Spence is one of those guys who leads by example, not a vocal leader. I personally think vocal leaders are a bit overrated. Actions say enough and Spence gets everyone in position. Got to get the passing game going though. J12 was absymal. But a W is a W!

Can someone tell me who the coach / balding gentleman is who was shadowing Golden during his interview with Holly Rowe after the game?
Always is to the back and left of the HC.
Not Kehoe, not sure who the dude is.
Anyone know?
Posted by: AlpharettaCane | September 20, 2011 at 09:29 PM
J12 was NOT that bad, he was just J12. The defensive effort was increidble. Wait until Ray Ray and Vernon get back, then we will have something.
Now what about Fisch and D'Onofrio? Verdict so far?

what's up Justin,
Fisch is going to be a good one when he gets his own Qbs in here.
Posted by: solarcane | September 20, 2011 at 09:31 PM
I loved Coach D's game plan. Team tackled better and had better initial reads. Miami opponents have had nine possessions in the red zone and only allowed 1 touchdown.
Fisch is good. The lack of velocity with J12 is scary. I wish LaRon Byrd was involved more. Even J12's completions he was flirting with fire sometimes
Posted by: Justin Antweil | September 20, 2011 at 09:34 PM

I think Harland Gunn may be the odd one out. He's a good run stopper but not a big pass protecter. Feliciano was REALLY impressive and will have RT until he can't prove it. Linder is too good to sit.

Solar, the bees over at Tech are making some noise.
I know they haven't played anyone, but 768 yards? Holy Christ. 12+ a pop?
They just have to pretend like they can throw the ball and they're going to be dangerous.
I think they're going to give our 'Canes all they can handle. OSU gashed us up the middle a bunch the other night until they made some adjustments.

I agree. D'onofrio has and will had his work cut out for him.
First game against MD and they threw the ball all over the field against a depleted UM secondary.
In a few weeks against GT they will attempt to run the ball down our throats. It will NOT be an easy game as some might assume.

Hurricane Walk was the highlight of the game for me! And I'm not going to lie, the defense was my biggest concern and their play shocked me.... Yes, OSU was not as impressive as one might have expected BUT don't take anything away from our defense. Once RayRay gets back, watch out! And Forston is still not playing at 100% of his ability, but have faith, he will.

OGV - I am typically of the same opinion with you on most Cane/Football matters, so I am not begging to argue w/ the Ayles topic.
I agree with your opinion that Ayles did not bleed orange and green and came here because the party was over in SoCal.
However, whether he was "soft" or not did not have anything to do with his head injury. That's all I'm saying.
And for the most part, having lived my entire life in Big 10 country, I don't have many good things to say about football in the Pac 10/12, whatever. And no, I don't give a dam* about Big 10 football either.

Da skreet'z identity is unknown right now. My best guess at this time . . . Romeo Davis?
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 21, 2011 at 01:00 AM
pre83, I'm not trying to get in a row with you either, you go way back on here so I've got nothing but respect for your opinion. Left coast football takes all the best players and stacks them on offense leaving the 2nd tier prospects to stock the defensive side most often. Thus you have Ayles running roughshod as a schoolboy and getting all that attention down at OC Lutheran but then once he gets skimmed off the top and up a level in the worst defensive BCS conference overall, he does nothing. Then he moves to an upper tier defensive BCS conference and gets taken out for good in practice by his own teammate who is a ferocious defensive prospect and an elite one in the entire nation. That's my point in this, great offensive players on the left coast are a lot of times great because they don't have great defenders making their job incrementally difficult compared to most of the rest of the nation. Not saying Ayles was soft, saying he wasn't that great of an offensive talent to begin with and never learned to avoid the big hit because he never had 11 guys on a team that could deliver it on him before. But hey, at least South Beach is still 10 miles away if he can stand the neon at night without getting headaches.

Ohio_Cane - the recruits were behind the rope right next to the east endzone where the Canes were warming up. First guy I saw there when I walked onto the field was Gray Crow .. talked with him for a little bit .. then saw Chris Freet, talked with him and he said to make sure I didn't have any extended convos with the recruits b/c it would be a violation

Head Coach Bill Snyder
On the difficulty emulating Miami’s speed during practices…
“You are what you are. If you do not have people who can replicate what someone else can do, then it hinders your preparation. That might be true in a lot of different arenas and it is certainly true as it relates to speed. We just do not have it. Not saying that everybody we have is left-footed, but we still do not possess that kind of speed. It is hard.”

We are the furthest south so we play all the northern schools...makes sense...
Put FSU in the north and let us play the Carolinas and Georgia...

Why not move J. Johnson to D.Tackle? Dudes hugh.Speaking on D. Johnson, he played a lot as a freshman and even caught a td pass against Duke and then fell off da map. Dude can fly.
Adding the Cuse & Pitt does not make this conference stronger in football. This is strictly a basketball move. This may help us recruit better in those markets, is the only positive for football.
We also, may have to be looking over our shoulder, as the ACC may look to do to us what the romans did to my boy J. Ceasar.

Adding Pitt and Cuse makes the ACC the best basketball conference in the country, hands down.

Just because a guy has size doesn't mean MOVE him. Gunn WILL BE a GUARD and ONLY a GUARD. Obviously Jeremy Lewis is capable of going back to defense of need bee but the rest of those guys are OL only. You don't just put someone there. Jermaine will REMAIN an OL as well. Ben Jones did play DE in HS, but I think he'll remain at OL too. He hasn't shown ANYTHING during his time here so why would he be any better on D where the mentality is much different than that of an OL. Plus I'd question his athleticism as a DL at this point. I wouldn't look for ANY of our current OL to move to DL except for Lewis who obviously started his career at DL anyways.

Emmanuel Benton - "One of my buddies over at the park told me Leonard Hankerson is starting to "get it" in practice. May come off inactive list sometime soon."
Very happy for Hank if this is true!

Wasn't the ACC already the best basketball conference? I'd say yes, but yeah -- adding 'Cuse and Pitt just renders any further argument about the best b-ball conference completely stoopid.
