"I guess the only question left now is: Is beating Bethune Cookman College next Saturday at Sun Life Stadium considered a "realistic expectation" for this Miami team?"

That should be a realistic expectation for ANY D-1 school. We should annihilate them. 40+ margin of victory. If it's less than 20 margin, I'll consider it a loss

OK...I am going to add 1 more comment to the previous blog. Why? Because the count is currently sitting at 666.

Miami SHOULD have beat Maryland.

Miami COULD have beaten KSU.

Obviously and unfortunately they did not get it done on either occasion. At this point we have no idea what will happen for the rest of the season.

Golden has his work cut out for him of that there is no doubt. He still has to prove he is up to the task and I think he will.

I do NOT believe he will leave this project unfinished. He will stick with the process and make it work, but it will take longer than most of us expected and all of us hoped for.

Be patient CaneNation, even though we may finish at 8-4 this season there will be better days ahead in spite of any sanctions that may come down from the NCAA.

I will say this: The team NEVER quit against KSU as they prolly would have done last year.

ftmcane

AMEN soup. I was there and they did fight the entire game. My 6 yr old son refuses to say the canes lost. He says "the ref said it was a touchdown so they won". Diehard already. LOL

dg

Wins/Losses, Umm? Do they really matter when I see the Canes becoming my alma mater, Vandy. I believe the UM administraton wants to be a Vandy or Duke but just not on the football field. Just does not work that way, long term. What we have here ladies and gentlemen is the age old battle, athletics against academics. At the moment Miami and Notre Dame are the case studies. So far academics are winning by a landslide.

Interesting perspective butg I think you are over-simplifying the issue. Please elaborate? Offer solutions?

How come Duke can win at basketball at the highest levels but not at football with the same academic standards?

How can Notre Dame beat Miami so DECISIVELY in the bowl game last year with the same academic standards?

How can Stanford win at football with the same or even higher academic standards?

How come Duke can win at basketball at the highest levels but not at football with the same academic standards?

15 scholarships vs. 85, it's easier to find 10 smart basketball players so that you can get by with 5 dummies that nobody will notice.

How can Notre Dame beat Miami so DECISIVELY in the bowl game last year with the same academic standards?

They cared and we didn't. At least as far as I could tell.

How can Stanford win at football with the same or even higher academic standards?

Usually they don't win. These last 2-3 years are the aberration.

Do I win the prize? :)

The Gator here LOL....I love that!!!

You know what really amazes me is how well the Gator coaching staff transition is going?? Sad and I hate saying this but they seem to have a pretty solid team this year. They may lose to AL or LSU but they are winning against teams they are supposed to beat.

I did see the deer in the highlights look by lots of coaches, close-up on the camera on tv, look at the replay on ESPN 3.

Sorry I am not happy at all with this team. I want better, again if that is negative than it is negative. To stay sane I will expect less but still my heart wants more.

And to those who do not believe I am a "true cane".......KISS MY GRITS!!!! (I bet some will be too young to even get it)

Since all the pictures I posted before were not good enough, I will go to my Mom's house to find some pictures of me in the Orange Bowl attending Cane and Dolphin games before some of you were born.

Okay lunch break over back to work.

Jint's butter-scotch personality has been a cancer to this team since 2008, watching SpongeBob in the lockeroom, wearin G@Y A$$ clothing and they pickin' on me tweets has created the soft A$$ weak minded scared team that played this past Saturday. One year of Golden won't cure the team's ills, only graduation of the 2008 class

Soup,

first things first: I read and always read the whole article. I owe you that and I always learn something.

I would like to think we should have beat MD, and could have beat KSU. I think many feel that with the missing guys in the lineup, we beat MD. They were there vs OSU and KS. Played good vs OSU, not so good vs KSU. Logic tells me its a draw. They showed up Sat., so maybe they only showup vs MD. I do not know, we can do the math til Doomsday and not know.

Football is a funny....and cruel game. We all bring light to many subjects as we interact; heck everbody on here is a good coach....and I mean that. We all have valid points and though we do not always agree, we are a smart bunch.

The bottom line is that we want to win. That is half the battle for me: if you do not want to win, then you won't win. I do not think you can teach people the want or desire to win. Lombardi: "Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is the only thing".

So we make great observations, and we damn sure want to win. We cannot do it, these kids have to want to win, and make the sacrifices necessary to make those desires come true. I do think Coach is pretty good at what he does. I think the staff is good as well. It is trial and error, and takes time. 3 games together. I do expect people to go 110%, play every play, execute basics, learn from errors and stick together. Not sure everybody on the team is there yet, but I will remain faithful. We need to stick together as a blog as well. I read some great things from all during and after the game; lets keep the faith people, we got a game this week.

Thanks Soup for providing this blog and for putting up with me friend. Nice article.

Two requests..well a wish and a request

1 I turn 53 on Wed. my player gave me a 42-7 win on Sat in the mud against the team that beat us on their way to the SB last year. My boys destroyed them. Can we wish my BD present is a win vs BC?

2 Solar, I do not ask for much, but a cool video from the band would be a nice gift buddy. You are incredible with those videos!!

Here are a few teams we are usually associated with as far as being equals to over the past years.

Here are their seasons since 2006
You can see some good programs take time to rebuild and others can snap back from an off year, while others just roll along.

USC 06 11-2, 07 11-2, 08 7-6, 09 9-4, 10 8-5

Al 6-7 7-6 12-2 14-0 10-3

LSU 11-2 12-2 8-5 9-4 11-2

Tnn 9-4 10-4 5-7 7-6 6-7

Fl 13-1 9-4 13-1 13-1 8-5

Mch 11-2 9-4 3-9 5-7 7-6

ND 10-3 3-9 7-6 6-6 8-5

Nb 9-6 5-7 9-4 10-4 10-4

Set realistic expectations, believe in the process, acknowledge the fact other fans aren't always going to agree with you, respect their right to their opinions.

Here is what is realistic with the recent Canes teams for the past 6-7 yeras (or longer):

1) They are capable of winning every game; and
2) They are capable of losing every game.

Also, our AD making our schedule is lunacy. Every team warms up with cupcakes to work on aspects of their game. Not us! Let's start with an ACC matchup on labor day.

I stopped expecting a "win" last season I think. But I do expect better fundamentals and not quitting. We saw that in spurts.

My pleasure! It is a LOT more work than people realize and it is only because I have a flexible work schedule and a VERY flexible wife that I can manage to find time to run this blog.

Like everyone else here I just want to win the games we "should" win and compete in those that we might expect the competition to be tougher (VT, FSU, etc.).

I said from the beginning that I would be satisfied with 9-3 this year with loses to OSU, VT and FSU and IF we got lucky maybe 10-2. We beat OSU so 10-2 was actually possible IF not for the losses to MD and KSU in games we "should" have won.

Now I think we are looking at 7-5 or 8-4. That is not good enough and what I think is below expectations. But it is what it is so we have to move forward and root for The U in all of the remaining games.

Maybe one day Miami will be as good as Temple and beat Maryland 38-7?

On a brighter note - AG's former players at Temple seem to be playing their behinds off like Solar pointed out.

thats it right there CGNC...
a lot of people are blaming the coaches for the goal line stand against KSU...the coach had the right call on first down...it was the lack of execution by the QB and the TE that failed...the QB failed to throw the ball to the right spot, he threw it too low...and the TE failed to catch a ball that hit his hands...

if both players execute the play the was it was drawn up.....WE WIN

Golden even said on joe rose's show this morning, that if on 4th and goal jacory had just ran it in and hadnt hesitated then he would of scored...game over...

this team is a mirage...you can see the greatness, but cant achieve it

As a team they have to come out swinging like they did agaisnt OSU, I understand Coach Golden and Fish wanting to keep the offense simple for Jacory. This offensive line supposed to be a strength then why are they playing musical chairs? This team sucks, and with major sanctions coming, it won't get any better for YEARS now. I don't expect Golden to remain here after this year and who can blame him? He's a young coach trying to make a name for himself. Kind of hard to do that when half your schollies are cut and you can't play in a bowl for years. In fact, we may not even have a team next season if the NCAA decides it's had enough of this program and decides to give the media what they've been yelling for since the Shapiro mess hit.If we are in for more years like this one's gonna be with these mutts, it might be a blessing NOT to have to watch them anymore. Am tired of watching the neverending parade of interceptions, fumbles, boneheaded penalties, missed tackles, and failures to hold anyone on third down (no matter how many yards are needed to get the 1st, they'll do it every time). This team is AWFUL and with the situation we're in now, Geebus himself couldn't coach these nags! Good riddance to this whole bunch!

Again Legion if you can't take what happened Saturday then God help you in three years! This thing is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.
The player suspensions were just foreplay, the NCAA hasn't even "kissed" us yet!
I have no problem with someone who doesn't want to go to a game for any reason. $30.00 parking is enough reason to stay away. But for me I would go just to watch Miller break a long TD run or to watch Benji make that big TD catch to put us ahead late in the game! If we can win then I'm there. I cannot ever remember watching a cane game where we absolutely had no shot at winning before the start of the game.
UM's best (and worst) days are ALWAYS ahead of them! Take a cue from the Gator's who supported their team for 70+ years before they won their FIRST SEC Title! 70+ Fing years!! I'm pretty sure we'll best that "accomplishment"!

THE "U" HAS BECOME NOTHING MORE THAN A FARM SYSTEM FOR THE PROS, WHOOPTY DOO!iF WE WOULD OF PLAYED OFFENSE IN THE FIRST HALF LIKE WE DID IN THE SECOND, WE WOULD OF SCORED 45 PTS. A SCARED MAN CAN'T WIN. WE ARE PLAYING NOT TO LOSE INSTEAD OF PLAYING TO WIN. PLAYING CLOSE TO THE VEST, KEEPS THE OTHER TEAMS IN IT. DENOFRIO NEEDS TO GET THE DEE FIXED OR DUMP ALL THOSE OVERATED NO TACKLING ZEROS AND PLAY WALK-ONS, AND FRESHMAN, AT LEAST THEY WOULD PLAY WITH SOME PASSION AND EXCITEMENT, IT COULDN'T GET MUCH WORSE. 8 GUYS BACK ON DEE AND WE ARE 100 IN THE NATION AGAINST THE RUN. Let me put it this way, majority of all teams take on the personality of their coach or the starting QB so it's a mind-set and I'm not saying that Spongebob is killing our team but when Butch was runnin' things it was always Gladitor or whatever murder death kill movie he would make them watch to have the right MIND SET going into the game

So after throwing 2 TD and 2 Pics against Ohio State Jint already worrying about what fashion statment he's gonna make or "at least tha hood has his back" comments reveals Jint thin skin with wanting to be on tweeter but can't handle tweeter negative impact when he fu@ks up

Butch made a name for himself because he never stopped trying to get better regardless of the teams situation. The "fans" treated Butch like garbage until they realized what he had done, then it was too late to get him to stay. He picked UNC over UM for the same reason.
"We" (Drunken scumbag who we all have to sit near on gameday!) will likely do the same to Golden. A lot of fans were screaming his name in vain on Saturday and the lean years haven't even started yet. When your blackout drunk AND cycling on roids you can't help it! FSU’s Greg Reid arrested on pair of misdemeanor charges

Posted by John Taylor on September 26, 2011, 10:24 AM EDT

It has not been the best of starts to a season for Greg Reid. First the Florida State cornerback/return man extraordinaire was suspended for the second game of the season for violating unspecified team rules, then missed Saturday’s loss to Clemson due to injury.

Now, Reid has an off-field legal incident with which to deal.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Reid was arrested early Monday morning and charged with perjury not in an official proceeding and resisting an officer without violence. The Tallahassee Democrat reports Reid was being held in the Leon County Jail in lieu of a $500 bond.

No details were given as to what led to the arrest.

Soup, Stanford has sucked in football for a long time. Of course, they have a competive team every blue moon. Almost any team could have beaten the Miami team ND beat. They were demoralized. In regard to b-ball, all it takes is one stud and a few other decent players and you have a top ten team. Football requires much more of an investment and 5-10 studs to be a good team. Bottom line is football players are not known scholars; of course, the occasional Myron Rolle appears. I don't know how many borderline admission cases Miami football has or if Butch's standards were different, but it is strange all these kids "luv the U" but end of at other schools.

For some reason, there has been an adversial relationship b/t the administration and program. The 30 for 30 special touched on it. You have to invest in the cash cow or it weakens. The only way to level the playing field is to tie scholarships to graduation rates. Of course that will not happen--the SEC would cease to exist :-) Just my .02

With Lamar, might this game be, if he’s not hurt badly, an opportunity for him to rest up?

“All respect, we’re trying to win the game. That’s all we’re trying to do. We’re trying to get better and win the game. Bethune has got an excellent team coming back. They’re off to a good start this year. They’re going to come down here with great energy, with nine days preparation. They’re well coached and we better bring our A game, and that’s it. There is no looking ahead. There is no resting anybody. We’re getting ready for a football game. Hopefully there will be a point in our program where we’re settled in and we have depth everywhere and we’re not playing freshmen sometime in the future where that will be the case. But right now this is about us getting better and becoming a better football team."

86, it was noce to meet u on Saturday...hope we can hook up for a game in the future. U da man...man!!! LoL

back from my hiatus...if u guys haven't noticed yet, I disappear after losses. Not jus on the space but I place myself in a sports solitary confinement. I cant read the Herald, don't wanna hear what others have to say, cuz I KNOW what the problem is, I follow our guys close enough, hearing dummies just pisses me off. But I don't even watch NFL football. No ESPN, nothing, it sux. I take it hard.

Man I know that I ain't that old to remember the glory days (all 3 titles in the 80's) but I'm still old enough to know that if ur a real ass Cane, ONE SINGLE LOSS is like a death in the family. I don't care what the hell the negative people on the blog have to say about my thought process on a Cane loss. It's still Cane football no matter what.

It just sux, and like I said just cuz I don't recall all glory, check that, alot of the glory, that still don't mean that I wasn't around for loads of it and doesn't mean that I ain't knowledgable of the past. I know my history, have read books, and I'm even good with some players (old timers). My fave Cane is Earl Little and the story behind it is quite hilarious...LoL but yea man I'm sayin all this and bringing all this up to say that we who bleed this orange and green need to keep it that way.

Some bloggers and fans on here are starting to sound like fans from other schools when they bring up certain things. We don't think like that here, no moral victories for us. No taking time bull crap (all that stuff is for the OTHER guys), a true Cane is supposed to come in and dominate as a frosh...like Sapp, Ray, or D Morgan. No coddling, screw that. Hey sorry if I think that way but u know what, our head coach does too!!! He's tru U and he never even was a part of our past...but he recognizes it and expects it to happen.

My 1st game @ the OB was when I was 11... the game that made it 58 in a row (I wanna say Georgia Southern)...I remember where the seats were and everything. I've been to epic games and so many heart breaking ones. Wide right 3, wide left 1, the game when Wasgington came down and we hurt them really bad, I was @ the game when we were ranked 8 and Penn State came to town as #2 with Lavar Arrington. I'll never forget that game...raining, nail biter, James Jackson clearly gets a first down but the ball was spotted way short late in the 4th on a 4th down, then Chafie Fields catches a streak down the keft sideline into the open end of the stadium (M. Rumph fell down but Reed was supposed to be there) and we lost a heartbreaker...man. I been to the last game @ the OB, I cried when FSU embarrassed us @ Doak with Ryan Clement as our QB beacause I thought it was over for us and we woild never be back, I was at the FSU game last year, and I was at the game on Saturday as well.

The hell with all u negative bloggers, especially the newer ones on here...get real man. 86 I don't know how u let em on here but w/e...it's ur site and it's a dam good one.

I love my Canes man...ride or die..and guess what, w/ all the bull$h!t, we still have only one ACC loss...call it unreal expectations but I still think that we have a decent year. Decent as in we can run the dam table....will we ???? That's another story, but CAN WE...OFCOURSE. And screw u if u think otherwise. Temple beat Maryland, Terps ain't better than us man, we have a full squad we beat em...simple as that. Point I'm tryna make is as we already know, we're everyones Superbowl and I dunno y the hell we specialize in making other teams look good but KState aint that good either. w/e they 3-0 props to em but I ain't down on the guys...well a select few yea, I'll be at their dam graduation just to make sure they never suit up for us again but I'm tru U and I just wanted to vent.

Canes can and will turn it around THIS year...

Well you got to put 11 on the field, and if your experienced and/or upperclassmenn do not lead or get the job done, you play somebody who wants to play. Give me inexperience but hungry like Chick over somebody experienced but apathetical anyday.

SOUP

Herbie...Based on what I've been told and have seen myself at games:

TBen and Streeter are like parking in someone's yard at the Orange Bowl: "No blockie, blockie!"

Byrd can block very well but has caught the funk for running routes and catching da ball. He needs to have a Leonard Hankerson type revival to contribute more to the passing game.

"find some pictures of me in the Orange Bowl attending Cane and Dolphin games before some of you were born."

Careful there girl I was a fan before U were born. After this loss I cried and my wife (retired R/N) said not to worry about it. The combination of major surgery and the loss by UM opened the flood gates. I recovered quickly
The Dolphin game I remember was the hough rain storm during a Raider game in the OB
I think it was while they were still in the

Great to meet U at the game and GREAT post!

To answer your question: I have to let them all on the blog (positive or negative)because once I start deleteing comments or blocking or banning people then I catch hell for being "The Soup Nazi" and get criticized for censorship and not letting people "express themselves".

Hang in there, we will be back. Look forward to seeing you at more games later this season so maybe we can hook up and tailgate and talk trash.

I will not be at the BCC or Duke games game because I gave the tickets to some friends but I will be at GT, UVA and BC games and away games @FSU and @USF.

I feel ya dog! I can't stand to lose and you are right, I'm tired of making these teams look good. I couldn't watch the second half because I was so pissed off at the first. I keep saying this is the year and then we go out get punked by wanna bee teams. If we are going to go down, lets go down guns blazing but lets do it the whole game. F it, just throw caution to the wind offensively. This first half Elmer Fudd offense ain't getting it. It looks like our defense is going to keep taking siestas, so we might as well bombs away.

mi@mic@ne

The only good yr Randy had was with the Northwestern kids... after that recruiting was down hill. At the same time we were not attractive to the high school qbs. Al is going to start doing it rite.

Hermosa Cane

I will say this: The team NEVER quit against KSU as they prolly would have done last year.

Posted by: SOUP | September 26, 2011 at 12:13 PM

That's the truth, right there.

Dadesfynest83

@ SOUP...okay cool, I'll def be @ the rest of the games this year and hit u up either on FB, twitter, or both just to see if we can catch up and tailgate. my season tix buds are freakin crazy hiolarious and I'm sure ur crew is as well. My twitter name is the same as on here so u know who it is when I "@" u. As far as the whole censorship thing...yea ur right, never thought about that...still sux but I guess it makes for a helluva blog!!! LoL..

@ herbie, man I was really goin thru it in my section, ppl were starting to worry about me...lol. and I was sober ! LoL bUt yea I agree w/ u and I'd rather lose by 50 knowing we sucked instead of losing LIKE THAT...OMG that one was for the birds

LOL that is funny!!!!

That's the problem with most of these players, they have one good game followed by one bad game, now if we can get eveybody on the same page, we might have something. I say dump the pro-style and go to the spread option. At least we can find a qb to run that, there a dime a dozen in High School. I mean, how many major colleges are still running the pro-style offense? So. Cal, Alabama, maybe Texas but the difference between them and us, better Quality of players. So. Cal, if a 5 star don't pan out there's another 5 star to take his spot. We don't have that luxury.

Joaquin said THE SAME THING. It's like if the offense is on, then the D isn't that day or vice-versa.

U know what I wish, I wish these guys would start holding each other accountable. Not the coaches, but the PLAYERS THEMSELVES. I'd love to know that Jacory is getting the hell threatened out of him by the defense, or him gettin on a guy for missin a block or Sean givin it to a guy for missing a tackle u know? Or jus any upper classmen gettin in a guys face tellin him to tighten up OR ELSE!!! Dorsey did it, and they listened... u seen that clip of him layin into the O-line during an FSU game? AND WE WERE WINNING !!! LoL

Things have already changed at the U. But its getting the players to believe it. The two we lost was from being used to losing..plain and simple. Weve got to take care of the ball and make the plays that change the game like the U is suppose to.

2002nemo

PREDICTION:

Because some top ranked opponents are going to take UM too lightly, I predict that we upset either VT or FSU or BOTH on the road.

However, my prediction is premised on the following:
1. No untoward injuries this weekend.(And Miller is completely healed).
2. SH returns to bolster the OL.
3. J12 plays up to his potential. (Lets face it, when he's HOT . . . he sizzles! When he's NOT, he . . . .)

VA cane you think the young ones watched Alice????

Fran I know you know I am a "true" cane fan! I used to go to dolphin games as a kid in my sunday best....yes panty hose and all!!!!!!

Everyone I sure hope in 2 years we are not still playing this same game. I bought into you guys when you said this team was soo talented, even though I didn't think it. When I said I was worried about the KState game you guys said I was crazy that team was pathetic, I bought it. I told you until this NW class leaves Canes will straight up suck, you guys said Golden was the magic man he will change their attitudes overnight, so again I bought it. So until I see MORE big baby steps in the right direction....I will just sit back watch and expect very little. I like Golden, Nicole says he is very, very good looking in person, so I will give him 3 years, like I originally thought, to make things right. And Hell I am okay with 3 losses but to KSTATE at home, no, no that is not acceptable, not at all.

Gators look like they have one good team and it kills me to say that. Not sure why but they are better than the Canes.

can you imagine what the Nole blogs must be like???....I mean that had much higher expectations than we did.

canechic

by the way the FIU attorney that I work with said Cane tickets were going for $3 on Stub Hub....is this true???

I am sure theNoles blogs are in complete and total meltdown!

Losing to MD on the road in the opener with several suspended starters was defensible at the time.

Losing to K-State at home in the third game? There are no excuses for that.

VA Cane

LOL canechic, they probably do not. Florence Jena Castlebury indeed!!!

I understand how you feel about the Canes; we all have opinions and we have that right. I know you are a big fan, you just want to win like all of us. Some of us oldies have been around for the great times, and want to see the Canes win in the present. We will get there.

I really enjoyed the story about Nicks friend; though I have never met Angry, I can see him feeling that way. Great perspective that I have experienced with several of my older players who have bben there as well. It keeps me humble, open minded and always remembering someone has a much more difficult road than I do in my life.

SinisterCane

Jacory Harris has been Canespacin' as RCCF

canechic

That is the truth VA...he was scheduled to come home in November. Rory and nick were inseparable in 8th and 9th grade....rory kinda strayed away when nick stopped playing football and he continued. But nick is the only friend he writes to from overseas, he spent everyday with nick during his leave in May....true friends....just breaks my heart but I am just so glad he will recover.

Now that is some good sh!t right there! Calvin-esque in fact...
Well said Dadesfynest83, BCC will come in playing us like we're their SuperBowl for sure. We'd better be ready.

solarcane

This is how we scheduled things when we were trying to get over the hump and become national contenders.

We played this schedule and became National Champions, playing a schedule that included 6 teams with losing records, 2 teams with 7 wins, 1 team with 8 wins and 2 teams with 9 wins ( lost to 9-2-1 Florida).

This is what Boise gets bich slapped for doing by Cane fans every season.

We need to go back to C Southern, BCC, FAMU and forget trying to beat ranked teams the first couple weeks of the season.

1983

1 Florida 9-2-1
2 Houston 4-7
3 Purdue 3-7-1
4 ND 7-5
5 Duke 3-8
6 Louisville 3-8
7 Miss St. 3-8
8 Cinn 4-6-1
9 W Va 9-3
10 E Car 8-3
11 FSU 7-5

I would STILL like to see a Steven Morris "option" package for our next 1st & goal situation.

(I HATE to say this, but that's how Tebow got started... )

Hey SOUP! Getting a 1 st on this blog is suppose to be the highlite of the day.I know it was for me.Unless that 666 thing comes into play. How about some props, man. At least a congrats.
