Since his arrival first year University of Miami head coach Al Golden has preached relentlessly about the importance of returning to the proud history and tradition of Hurricane football.
It seems that Golden has talked about the remarkable legacy and incredible tradition at Miami of winning National Championships, producing All-American players and dominating the NFL draft at every possible opportunity.
On Saturday at Sun Life Stadium for his first home game ever Golden may have actually started a new tradition of his own that could eventually rival the tradition of running out of the tunnel through the smoke: The Hurricane Walk.
Manny Navarro, our good friend from The Miami Herald, was on hand to capture the event on video (SEEN ABOVE). He also took the time to interview a long-time Canespacer (known here on the blog as Canezilla) about what he thought about the new tradition of The Hurricane Walk before home games.
Canezilla and his hard core crew of Miami Hurricanes fans go way back in Canespace history and tradition as well. In fact, all the way back to June of 2006 when we first started the Canespace blog.
He and his crew can be found on a regular basis before games tailgating in the East side parking lot at Sun Life Stadium. We have had the opportunity to meet at a few UM events, several tailgate parties and even at some away games like at the UCF game in Orlando.
So if you want to meet Canezilla (and his lovely wife), other Canespacers or maybe even former 'Canes like Lamar Thomas before the game, then meet us at "The Hurricane Walk" on the West side of Sun Life Stadium about two hours prior to kickoff to welcome the Hurricane coaches and players.
Be like Canezilla: Get off the bench and get into the game!
UNO!!!

roach, soup,
I think the world of Jacory as a person, but I feel he has been as good as he is ever going to be for a long time.
That safety Merletti on UNC picked off two passes in a row to end Virginia's last two drives, guys like that scare me to death with Jacory trying to throw long when the pressure is on.

What a great time was to be had at the game Saturday! I came down from the ATL with 12 fans (3 OSU). I liked the vibe that going around the stadium on the tailgate tour we took. I am so impressed with the Al Golden show after just 2 games. It's great to see the response the Canes players have to him.
Keep it up Canes!

Northwestern Senior High probed for possible grade-changing
The Miami-Dade school district inspector general is investigating claims that a former principal at troubled Miami Northwestern High School may have changed the grade of a student athlete.
A veteran Miami-Dade principal tasked with cleaning up Northwestern Senior High in the wake of a 2007 sex scandal is under investigation on allegations that he changed the grades of a student athlete.
Principal Charles Hankerson oversaw a steady increase in student achievement in his four years at Northwestern and was credited with restoring discipline to the student body. After butting heads with the Northwestern football coach over the school’s dominant football culture, he asked to be assigned to a different school this year.
Miami-Dade Inspector General Christopher Mazzella declined to comment on the investigation Monday, but said he expects his office to issue a final report on the matter “in the very near future.”
Sources say the incident in question occurred more than a years ago.
Hankerson’s attorney, Michelle Delancy, called the allegations “ironic,” given Hankerson’s reputation as a no-nonsense principal.
“I’m confident, based on what I know, there is nothing that will impair his 20-year-plus record as a tough-as-nails, by-the-book administrator,” she said.
Three days before the school year started, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho reassigned Hankerson to a regional office pending the results of the investigation.. He does not have any duties as principal.
Wallace Aristide, a former assistant principal, took over at Northwestern.
The school has spent the past four years working to repair its image and boost its school grade and graduation rate.
Earlier this month, the school hit a high note — receiving a $1-million investment from the J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation to build a new science lab, partner with Florida International University and foster a college-going culture.
Hankerson became Northwestern’s sixth principal in three years when former Superintendent Rudy Crew tapped him to lead the inner city school in 2007.
The previous principal had been removed for allegedly covering up a sex scandal involving a star football player and an underage girl.
In the decade since the state began grading schools, Northwestern had never earned above a D.
Hankerson arrived and made academic improvement a top priority.
He brought in Teach for America, a program that filled the classrooms with high-achieving young teachers, and pushed students to take remedial reading and math courses.
He tripled the number of students in college-level classes and created a college resource center on campus.
By 2010, Northwestern was just points away from earning a C from the state Department of Education.
But Hankerson found himself in the spotlight for a different reason. Students and alumni complained the school had become all about academics and test prep — so much so that it was taking away from the storied football program.
The principal found himself under pressure from the alumni association.
In December, he had a falling out with football coach Billy Rolle and announced plans to leave Northwestern immediately.
Neither Hankerson nor Rolle would say what the spat was about. Miami-Dade school district spokesman John Schuster said Hankerson had requested the transfer to be closer to his family in south Miami-Dade.
Hankerson later delayed plans to leave Northwestern so he could attend graduation.
He was assigned to lead Miami Killian Senior High this school year, but he never got to start the new assignment. Effective Aug. 19, Hankerson was assigned to the south region office.
Members of the Northwestern alumni community met the news of the probe with caution.
Alumni Association President Larry Williams declined to comment, saying he wanted to give Hankerson the benefit of the doubt until all the facts are in and the probe is closed.
But Darryl Holsendolph, a Northwestern alumnus and CEO of a Miami merchandising company, said he was confident Hankerson would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
“He’s a stand-up guy,” Holsendolph said. “The results are there. He did great work.”

Noles QB EJ Manuel day to day
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Quarterback EJ Manuel's availability for 11th-ranked Florida State's Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Clemson is on a day-to-day basis, coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday.
Manuel, who didn't practice Monday, is one of several Seminole offensive players who could miss the team's first road test of the young season. Fisher had only four scholarship receivers healthy at Monday's practice.
"It affects you," the second-year head coach conceded. "Injuries are a part of football. We'll move around and do differed personnel groupings."
Manuel sprained his non-throwing left shoulder in Saturday's 23-13 loss to top-ranked Oklahoma, and doctors checked him again Monday to see if the injury was severe enough to keep him out of the Clemson game.
Fisher said an MRI on Manuel revealed no structural damage.

"We'll see how it goes," Fisher said.
"It's a concern," he said. "You've got to make sure it doesn't affect your throwing motion."
Redshirt freshman Clint Trickett would get his first start if Manuel can't go against the 21st-ranked Tigers (3-0).
"He was on top of things," Fisher said about his backup quarterback's practice Monday. "Played really well."
The Seminoles' already hard-hit receiving corps got yet another jolt Monday when Fisher announced that the team's second leading receiver this season, sophomore Scooter Haggins, requires surgery to repair a broken left hand sustained against the Sooners. Haggins who has 11 catches on the season, will miss four to six weeks.
The Seminoles (2-1) might also be without receivers Bert Reed and Kenny Shaw for this weekend's critical ACC opener.
Reed is trying to shake off the effects of an ankle sprain sustained in a 62-10 win over Charleston Southern on Sept. 10. Shaw was removed by ambulance early in the Oklahoma game after a vicious helmet-to-helmet collision with two Sooners defenders.
Shaw was taken to a hospital following the scary hit, but returned to the Florida State sideline late in the game.
"He was much, much better than we anticipated," Fisher said Monday. "I don't know if I'm optimistic, but I feel very good."
Florida State has been without junior wide receiver Willie Haulstead all season because of ongoing concussion symptoms. Fisher said Haulstead could be redshirted if he's unable to return soon.
Running back Chris Thompson, last year's leading rusher, has been hampered with a stress fracture in his back and hasn't displayed the explosiveness he exhibited last season.
Aside from a 19-yard run in the opener against Louisiana-Monroe, Thompson has managed just 26 yards on 16 carries.
"We've got to get better in the running game," Fisher. "We've got to block better."
Florida State has hardly used its most experienced back, senior Jermaine Thomas, who has had just four carries this season. Thomas has 1,827 career yards rushing and a 5.7 per carry average.

Destin, I read somewhere an out of context quote that most are attributing to an INT that I think is the 4th and 1 fumble. Jacory said it was a busted play he was trying to make something out of, I think it was the fake a FB handoff, toss to the RB to the outside Morris ran for a 1st against Maryland.

I, like most, am impressed so far with Mr. Golden.
I have noticed so far that if there is anything to say, Al, as he should being the HC, is going to be the one to say it on behalf of the coaching staff.
Nothing against Al. Let's be honest, in comparison to RS, there is actually reason to pay attention to the interview.
That being said, it would be nice to get the perspective of other coaches.
I would especially be interested in the thoughts of Kehoe since he could give his thoughts while comparing Al to Schnelly, JJ, Erickson, Butch and Clappy.
I find it difficult to believe that I would be the first to point that out.

Little early to compare but UM over the last decade after 2 games:
Year PF PA
2002 104 33
2003 86 42
2004 64 10
2005 43 43
2006 61 23
2007 44 54
2008 53 33
2009 71 51
2010 69 36
2011 48 39
Numbers should be more indicative after Game 4.

Anyone else notice that Bryce Brown is not starting, and not listed as one of the top three runners for Kansas State? The Kansas State web sites say it is an "undisclosed" injury but it sounds alot like a coach afraid to play a player he knows is ineligible. I could be wrong, Lord knows I am wrong as more often as not lately, (yes that is a back handed apology to someone for letting some drinks get the bteer of me) but you don't not just play Bryce Brown when the other guys were pathetic in their two previous games.
Should be interesting to see how Arthur Brown plays. He had 12 tackles in the last game, and he was a stud against inferior competition. He also has some knowledge of our players he may be able to impart to his team mates. I don't think it will be a close game. The formula is clearly pound the ball and Kansas State doesn't have the players to stop it.
3-1 is almost assured (their quarterback is a converted wide reciever who is erratic as far as my research can tell but is an excellent runner). That Maryland loss is going to sting for awhile because it was winnable. A 4-0 Miami vs Virginia Tech would have created quite the buzz.

SJMPARMAN: The most glaring stat left out of all the posts I've seen on Bryce are the fumbles, which dropped him from a 3-way logjam at RB to 3rd on the depth chart. Oh, and his coach lampooning his work ethic & even using Arthur as a model of what Bryce is not in that dept.
Posted by: Felipe | September 20, 2011 at 08:24 AM
SJMPARMAN. The thing I wonder about is after Bryce had committed to the U, he went to go see his fellow commit Lamar play. Bryce probably saw the writing on the wall and realized, he wasn't going to be able to compete. And, thus, Hello Tennessee. There he had to compete against into David Oku. The result: Hello, Kansas State.
Of course there was plenty of time interspersed in there for personal reflection, time to wander the plains of Kansas and seek signs from the Almighty or whomever else he was channeling and time to complain about the unfairness of not being released from his scholarships when he wanted to be released.
Ultimately, I guess the excuse of wanting to play with your brother is the singles version of quitting to spend more time with your family.

I'm no expert, but it looked like the short yardage play they ran against Maryland a couple times where they make it look like they're gonna pitch it wide to LM6 but hand off to Hagens.
Either Hagens went the wrong way, or Jacory did. I dunno which one.

Tluv,
I've been ranting for about a year about our D.Tackle situation. Don't Expect Goldman. He was at FSU this past weekend and although he has the Canes listed in his top 6, with this NCAA thing hanging over us I don't expect us to get him. Goldie really needs to recruit this position hard but as it looks now, we'll get some retread 2 or 3 star players as stop gaps, until someone wakes up and realize its been 10 years since we had a differance maker at that position. Forston will not be 100% this entire season and the rest of those upper class Dts play as soft as tomato cans. Grimble & Pierre are not ready to play every down, from a pysicality standpoint. OSU gutted us between the tackles.

Wow. I know Okies love 'em some football, but it's obscene to have a college football coach pulling down that kind of dinero in the current economic climate.

CGNC they're all doing great.
My daughter just started at FSU in the fall. Poor kid was harassed pretty good for being a Miami fan by hall-mates during the MD game. Funny story tho: she called me before the FSU-OU game telling me she'd put the jinx on the game and guaranteed an FSU loss. I guess her jinx worked. LOL.

Presser started. Quotes incoming...
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 20, 2011 at 12:36 PM
DJ,
The salaries are just bizarre...adjusted for inflation, the OU program made 7% more money last year than 2003...when Stoops was making just under 2 million.
He basically (with incentives) tripled his salary in 8 years while returning a 1% annualized increase in sales.
I need to try that one on my boss...
Posted by: Texascane | September 20, 2011 at 12:38 PM
and I will be working under a 10 year paralegal and only doing bankruptcy and phones!!!

Just imagine: if ALL of us pulled that on our bosses, the Gross Domestic Product would go off the charts!

A preemptive thanks to Manny Navarro, Jorge Milian, HurricaneSports.com, and Scott Zavitz for quotes from these pressers....
Al Golden said he's anxious to see OL Seantrel Henderson return, but said Henderson hasn't be cleared yet
Golden speaking highly of JoJo...."He is a real good player for us...a good leader."
Golden says JoJo Nicolas has become a vocal leader and is an amazing human being
#UM players said OL Seantrel Henderson spent Tuesday on a stationary bike
To avoid distractions, Golden says the coaches have been working with the players on focusing on the "process"
Al Golden said Kansas State DT Ray Kibble is better than anyone the Canes have faced thus far
Golden: "Canes Walk is a great way to represent to our University... I hope that continues."
Golden says that six more practices with the players playing their normal positions made a big difference between the first and second games
Al Golden said what makes Lamar Miller special is his OL. He also can go inside as well as he does outside
"All pros, no cons", on ACC expansion
Golden on ACC expansion..... "It's a great time to be in the ACC."
Al Golden said team is still tinkering on OL, says Seantrel Henderson could play guard when he returns
Golden: "We fed off the crowd but I think the crowd fed off of the way our guys played."
On penalties..."They were down (vs. OSU), but it is still something we need to improve."
What Golden attributed the decrease in penalties too... "Threats." <--LOL
Team cut down on penalties from 10 at Maryland to 5 vs. Ohio State
Al Golden said next step for Canes is to advance from winning 1 big game to being a good team again
Golden crediting Jacory for team having a "better operation"
Al Golden said where he wants to see QB Jacory Harris make his most growth "on second and third reads."
More to come...

TLuv.
I eat and breath recruiting! DT is position that is relatively weak this year in the state. Not a lot of great prospects and then when you add to that potential sanctions, the national pool dries up really quickly. Obviously, the big fish is Eddie Goldman out of Washington, DC. He did like us very much and visited during the Shannon regime. The change to Golden DID affect him as he needed to rebuild the relationship, also the sanctions aren't helping. He's still saying he wants to visit and that will be key if we hope to stay on his radar. But IMO he's a long shot. Our current commit is Earl Moore from Tampa. He's a decent prospect but will need some time to add strength and technique to his game. He seems like a potential NT type IMO. Carlos Watkins out of North Carolina and Jordan Watkins out of Georgia were also interested but Carlos Watkins lost his interest fairly early and Jordan Watkins committed to Stanford soon after the allegations hit. Another kid that may come into play now is Christian Brown who early on was BEGGING for some Miami attention. We didn't offer and he's interested now in Illinois. Perhaps now we may warm up to him some, but then again we may not. DT is a position of need so maybe we dip in the Juco ranks a bit like with Smith and look there because this year is just not a great one for big time DT prospects in the state of Florida.

Golden commending Stephen Morris on how he has handled returning to a backup role.
Al Golden confirms TE Blake Ayles has retired due to concussions, says team will miss his maturity <-- (Never seen "retired" used in college lol)
Penalties, turnover ratio, pre-snap communication, special teams are things he wants to clean up before ACC play
