I've written and rewritten this answer 4 times. So my answer is going to be I don't know. Hardly expert analysis, but considering the circumstances and considering these aren't his players, this team looks like it has improved from last year. That's hard to argue considering the results are basically the same but just from watching the team they seem like they compete more and are in every single game. It's still alarming that they're losing to Virginia at home and the defense regressed again, but I don't know if the team is talented enough to have lofty expectations. They're just sort of OK. Congratulations on making me very conflicted

Ask Whittyngham when he gets here how much he thinks the short week to prepare lended to the latest 400+ yards of offense given up by the UM on defense? Then if he goes to that tired old saw of, "players not plays," laugh at him.

SOUP

Susan...what did U hear today from Al Golden?

SOUP

Susan...why is #72 Brandon Washington still at LT? Isn't he better suited at LG with #77 Hendersen outside at LT?

And will Clements see more time at RB as the season progresses?

canezilla

SUSAN...DO U THINK THE CANES COVER THE SPREAD OF 14 AGANIST DUKE?

SOUP

Susan and Chris...remember to hit your "refresh" button to keep up with the comments and questions!

Susan Miller Degnan

Al was good today. He said he was making changes "in every aspect of what we're doing right now.'' He said there would be changes in terms of play-calling and "personnel moves.'' But he wouldn't tell us at what positions and the players involved. He does not think the O-line is doing a good job lately (true), especially in terms of short-yardage situations. He's not satisfied with running game and with tight ends (blocking, etc.)

pbcfrcane13

For Susan or Chris....

I know its a little to early, but any reason to believe some juniors will be leaving early....

Like a Ray Ray
or Tommy Streeter

Was the misspelling of my name intentional?

Despite your passive-aggressive tone I'll answer the question. The team looked plenty prepared to play Georgia Tech on defense. Made the 9th best offense in the country incompetent. So I don't know what changes over the course of 4 days, either the coaches or players. One way or another, the defense isn't dominant.

orange 'n green in the vein

Susan, is Regis in the Golden-plated dog house still or is Ojomo really that effective inside against the run? Considering Moses basically had him staring at the pennants on the corners of the top of the stadium wall all night I'm having trouble believing Ojomo is the answer this year until he gets another 15 lbs of muscle put on him in the off-season.

canezilla

ANYBODY CAN ANSWER THIS..WITH ALL THE SPEED ON THIS TEAM HOW COME WE DONT DO MORE END AROUNDS AND SCREENS???????

Susan Miller Degnan

I expect juniors to leave early this season. Don't know about Streeter, but I wouldn't blame him if he bolted -- that is, if his season continues on this pace. There's too much uncertainty going forward next season. I definitely don't think Ray-Ray should leave early. What has he done this season? No way.

SOUP

Chris...what can U say about the fans and even the students failing to show up or stay for the whole game at Sun life? I drive three hours to go to the games from Orlando, they have no excuses in the 305.

Ray Ray Armstrong is listed as a 2nd round pick on ESPN.com. He may or may not come out, especially depending on what happens with sanctions to the program. Nobody seems to know anything about Tommy Streeter. 6'5 with that kind of speed and ability will catch on at some point.

Susan Miller Degnan

Soup, I'd like to see Brandon Washington back at guard, yes, next to big Seantrel. And the new depth chart says Mike James or Clements. Bet we see more of Clements this week.

2ND ROUND OF WHAT????CFL!!!

Susan Miller Degnan

Canezilla, I never assume the Canes will cover any spread. I know that sounds harsh, but I think you understand. It seems like whenever UM seems to turn the corner and break through, it regresses the next week. So maybe that means they'll cover the spread this week, right?

ChrisWittyngham

From canezilla

CHRIS..WHY DO STUDENTS LEAVE AT HALFTIME????

---

Been really disappointed in the students this season. It's embarrassing. It's a thursday night game on national television. They should run out of student seats and send people away. There's one group of students that get there first and are loud and are into it, but other than that nobody cares on campus. I always ask people if they're going to the game and they'd rather sleep in after a night in the grove. It pisses me off.

Another theory is that they're a lot of international students at UM, particular from Japan and China, not exactly football hotbeds. Also, very few kids from Florida and even fewer from Miami go to UM. A lot of northeastern imports, so students don't have long histories of being a UM fan, so they could care less about a team that isn't great. These are all excuses. It's inexcusable

pbcfrcane13

What line would you guys like to see

They wait for the NCAA to hand down they're penalties. I doubt they care at all about what's going on with the sanctions when trying to fix a 4-4 team

Susan Miller Degnan

Orange 'n Green, I know Golden is very disappointed with the defensive line so far. There's no pressure by them, which really screws up the rest of the defense. Chickillo and Vernon are very talented, but the tackles have struggled obviously. I don't think Micanor Regis has endeared himself to the coach.

Tesus just isn't good. That simple. More like terrible

And with the Dolphins, the only way the coach matters is if they get Luck. No team in 2011 wins a super bowl without a franchise quarterback. Then you can hair split over the offensive line, 2nd receiver, and the coach. It's why the dolphins have been a disaster

Rat Bastidd

It would be nice if one of our great players stayed and played his senior season. We really need Streeter to stay for the teams sake. Sure he'll make a lot of money in the league but with the new CBA he wont make HUGE money. Our new QB whoever that may be will need him. STAY!!!

Great answer!

orange 'n green in the vein

Susan, you were on here before the season and I asked you what early season game would be most indicative of what to expect from Golden's first year, you answered VT.

Wow, that was spot on. Anybody who says you don't know the game doesn't have any cred with me after that one now.

Jethro Franklin made a name for himself with Wild Bunch II when USC was tearing up a really shallow talent pool in the Pac-10, then he went to Temple in a head-scratching move, if Petri gets his line to throw Jacory off his game and helps Duke pull the upset on homecoming while UM's has done bupkis along the front four this year, do you see a major assistant cleaning, ala Shannon's first off-season where he switched up the defensive brain trusts, when 2011 is over or is Golden going to sink or swim with the guys he won 9 games in a row two years ago?

Susan Miller Degnan

Defense: Sean Spence. JoJo Nicolas.

Offense: Tommy Streeter, Jacory Harris and Lamar Miller. You guys pick the two you think are the best!

Would like to see them play, but if you had to pin me down, 7 or 8 ACC wins. Teetering on the tournament. I only say that because of the questions at center. They looked awfully athletic at midnight madness though. We'll see how they look under Larranaga.

The women are the team to watch. Deep run into the tournament are expectations for them. Go watch them play if you can. They deserve great crowds. And if you can't... Listen on WVUM!

Susan,
How will conference re-allignment effect recruiting in the future? My feeling is that the top recruit's will only want to go to a BCS conference school, which will "steer" kids away from schools like FIU, FAU.

Do you think UM has positioned themselves better than most BCS schools for coming higher academic standards in recruiting and during a college career?

SOUP

WOW: Chris and Susan both picked the same Legends of the Fall so far this season.

Chris...the rest of the way this season, how many games will Miami win? Is 8-4 or 7-5 good enough for Golden's first year?

Susan Miller Degnan

Wow, Orange 'n Green, good question about Duke pulling off the upset and potential coaching changes.. Great one. I absolutely don't have an answer. But I would never say, 'No way!' Golden's pretty tough. But he's also realistic and he seems like he knows this thing will take a long time to fix. HOWEVER, he seems like he means business, and I could see him making changes if he thought he needed to. I definitely don't think he'd can D'Onofrio, though. Not this season at least.

I'm not Susan but I'll answer your questions.

I actually think that UCF will go to the Big East. Whether or not they stay a conference is another thing, but FIU and UCF both felt like teams that should be in the big east. I think as long as they stay in the BCS they'll be fine

Nothing about this team says they'll win 4 straight, especially two of them on the road. 7-5 isn't exactly acceptable, but it's what you're probably going to have to settle for.

Chris, you're an 18-23 year old male, do you spend the first Saturday in November with mid 70's weather 10 miles away from campus on South Beach scoping out topless models or do you watch your .500 football team fight to comeback for the sixth year in a row against Duke for homecoming an hour away in both directions? Valid point. That's what's both good and bad about Miami. Because there's so many entertainment options, every sport organization has to fight for every last discretionary dollar. Which is why Dolphins-Redskins will without a doubt be blacked out and if it isn't then Stephen Ross will be the one buying the tickets. So I agree, they have to start earning their fans again after nearly a decade without any kind of meaningful winning

It's been about the same. We've also had terrible home games. Virginia Tech and Ohio State are just natural draws. Even clemson would be a draw this season. So far it's been Virginia, Georgia Tech's sleep inducing offense, Kansas State, and Ohio State. So it's not golden.

But expect a Shannon against USF like crowd for Golden against Boston College. That crowd is going to be a disaster. The day after thanksgiving with an at best 7-4 team? Good luck. Felipe

Al Golden told WQAM today that UM has some "clock-punchers" on the roster.

^There it is, just what we all expected. Guys wearing the U just to say they do. Not all, but a good lot of them.

CGNC

Good morning party people! Good interview last night - was fun reading the comments. Zilla that is a great pic of you and Mrs. Shoes Zilla.

CGNC

Canechic - here is a question for you since you have a kid at Miami and a kid at Oregon - how do the two schools compare in promoting their football team and games?

How is your new job?

Ohio_Cane

Manny - RB Lamar Miller practiced in a yellow non-contact jersey. Way he's run lately smart to save him for Saturday

Gorten - OT Seantrel Henderson is looking svelte. Says he has dropped down to 345 pounds

Chris Freet - In Case You Missed: With 1,955 yards, Travis Benjamin is about to become the 6th wide receiver in Canes history with 2,000 career receiving yards

herbieibis

Clock punchers or space takers, there both the same and most of them are on defense. Washington sux at guard and not getting any better and using Seantrell to motivate him isn't helping either. Also this merry-go-round with the o-Line doesn't help. Put the sun-of-a-guns where they belong. Seantrell at Tackle & Washington at guard and it doesn't matter who plays where on short yardage, when you have an 8 man front and why not give the ball to the dam fullback? Somebody said the secondary coach should go, why should he go, when One, he has no talent to work with and two Jethro's d. Tackles stink and get no pressure on the QB. Lets face it we have a bunch of week-sisters, on defense.
As far as the crowds at the games, who wants to watch a half-azz effort every other week. It's like watching an NBA game, with these guys, just watch the 4TH QT, that's when we wake up all the sudden and start to play.We need an on campus stadium, plain and simple, that seats about 45 to 50,000. Playing in an 80,000 seat stadium and filling up maybe 40,000 of those seats, i imagine you could hear a pin drop.
