On Wednesday, if you looked hard enough and stared long enough somewhere off in the distance, the orange and green Hurricane Express could be seen coming around the bend and clearly into focus.
Driven by first year head coach Al Golden the train was clearly gaining speed and momentum as The Process appeared to be actually working for the 2011 Miami football team.
But by midnight on Thursday all that was left of the Hurricane Express was a heaping, steaming, smoldering pile of twisted metal and dreams after Miami ran into Virginia and lost another game they should have won by the score of 28-21.
Laying at the bottom of the pile of junk that is now the 2011 Miami Hurricane season was The Process, now flattened, unrecognizable and significantly damaged.
The Process did not help the UM offense which suffered from another slow start, some very questionable play calling and one of their poorest and least productive performances of the season. Sure Jacory Harris and his high school teammate Tommy Streeter put on a show for the 30,000 or so 'Canes fans at Sun Life Stadium but it was a little too little and a little too late for Miami.
The Process did not help the infamous Swiss Cheese Hurricane defense that gave up way too may yards and four touchdowns to what had been an anemic Cavalier offense. Of course as they have been known to do on too many occasions the UM defense made an very below average college offense look like the New England Patriots being led by Tom Brady.
The Process did not help Al Golden and the UM coaching staff who got out-coached all evening by Mike London and his UVA staff. London caught the Miami staff off guard on several occasions as he dialed up several trick plays and a few big play calls that led to long TDs for the Cavaliers.
The Hurricane Express was derailed on Thurday night just as it was gaining speed and momentum as it jumped the tracks of The Process and crumbled into a heaping, steaming, smoldering pile of junk.
The 2011 season has turned into just another year in which your Miami Hurricane now have absolutely no chance at winning an ACC title that has eluded them since joining the conference seven years ago.
But I guess there is always next year, right?
Bleh!

Big East is DONE, IMO.

SOUP, I can only imagine how dissapointed you were Thursday night, but let's not insult the superlative 2001 team or their legendary Coach Clappy in this blog no matter how upset we all are with that first mention of a year paragraph two.
CGNC, Velvet Revolver broke up when the GNR guys told Scott Weiland he would have to pay them for the missed dates for going to rehab (again). Special K got bamboozled, he should have hired the other UVA assistant from the last decade, but that would require in conference coach poaching which is decidedly unposh around UM.
VA C, Scarface has owned the Governers Cup but London has his team playing at fever pitches for the big games since he got there, ranked teams, National Championships against Miami, he might be able to cook something up at home. Foster won't be dialing up defense with his eyes closed though like D'No, which will be a big difference in bringing UVA's attack back down from the 400+ yard stratosphere.
I'm very concerned that with the ammount of film now on Fisch's scheme a bowl is in jeaporady because there's no offense I have any faith in the college roomie to be able to diagnose and design a plan to stop. UM might not hold another team under 400 yards of offense the rest of the way and all the upperclassmen probably are now tuning the coaching staff out and thinking about the draft and their paychecks, never a good recipie.

Odd info of the day: Rutgers is now the only team left in the Big East from when Miami was there.

Ohio-lets bring Rutgers over-maybe we can win a game?
Posted by: TJL | October 28, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Too many not so bright players. Maybe the revnege talk was what lost the game, they semeed more intent on whacking someoneone than tackling. And Jimmy Gaines is just young and dumb. Hopefully he's like the majority of us who used to be young and dumb and figures it out with experience. But I don't think I've ever seen one guy standing next to a pile at the conclusion of a play more often than he is.

Posted by: Hermosa Cane | October 28, 2011 at 01:02 PM
2/3rd's of the way through the season, so how do we grade out?
OL - C- = supposedly the strong point of the team turns out to be average.
WR - A = Streeter, Hurns have all performed
TE - N/A = Not sure we have one on the roster
RB - B = Hard to grade without the OL performing, but capable of more
QB - A = Gotta say it, JH has been getting it done and the stats show it.
Overall O = B -enough to win 6-7 games...
DL - D = other than a game or two no pass rush, no turnovers, no game changing plays
LB - D = Other than SS we'd better better off playing with 6 DB's (or maybe not)
DB - C = Not as bad as the LB's, but not enough int's or game changing plays.
Overall D = D - sorry, just not enough talent to win more than 5-6 games.
Special Teams - B - No big mistakes, consistent kicking game, but no big returns.
Coaching - AG's reduced the penalties and turnovers, but the talent level just isn't there.
Still sticking with my 6-6 or 7-5 forecast from week 1.

Posted by: longtimecanfan | October 28, 2011 at 01:13 PM
I'm feeling 7-5 as well, but we could still squeak out 8-4 with a win in Tally. Before the doomsday crowd jumps me I will state that we have the ability to win or lose in Tally.
Rather than take a bite out of the shyt sandwich that many are sharing today I would like to give you my over-simplified analysis of the state of UM's program as compared to last year.
Offense: Better than last year.
QB: So much better that I feel bad Jacory wasn't in Jedd's system all 4 years.
Defense: No better, maybe a little worse. IMHO the issue is "the Jimmy's and the Joe's, not the X's and the O's"!
Special Teams: So much better than last year that I don't even recognize this squad anymore on kick coverage and returns!
Coaching: He He He, ummm yeah. Certainly better at HC, OC, and ST.
Fan Base: Mean spirited, fair weathered, delusional, spoiled. In other words, nothings changed in this category in the 30 or so years that I've followed the team.
That's my assessment. For all of UM's faults this year we've had the ball with the ability to win or tie at the end of all 4 losses. That's a fact not an excuse. If Al is around to guide us through the NCAA minefield that we are about to deal with then I think we will rise again. If Al is not around then I think UM will rise again!
Go 'canes!

Longtime..I agree with most but is flip the lbs and dbs. Our dbs are terrible or should I say Turble...I though or Atleast hope the safties would hold the unit together, bit is argue they've been worst. VT is is invisible and Ray Ray is totally lost. It scares me that we have no faith in the youngsters. I hope they mature over the summer b/c something has to change. If I were a major D1 CB or S recruit, Miami would be on the top of my list. Is be confident enough to know I could do no worst then what's out there now.

Hope we can recruit good players on defense. We have nothing good on defense. It is a slow death team. Other teams have lots of fun against this defense. They can make 10 minute drives or score on one play. Anyway they want. And our O-line, it is sad to see them get manhandled all game buy FOUR players all night. Miserable. Our J12 was hurried on every play, except when he got a sack! As far as opening holes for the run, NADA.

That's funny that it's such a given the head coaching is better this year because I have a giant news flash for a lot of you:
With one more UM loss this season the numbers will tell you otherwise, two more and the coaching is worse, three and it's time to extract a pound or so of flesh from the Lubbock AD, four and it's crow time for some people (you know who you are bunkie) to go with the Lubbock prairie justice.
Next week Petri is bringing Duke's defensive line to homecoming. Do you think they'll engage, shed and get ripped while trying to free the linebackers up to make the play five plus yards past the scrimmage line? Or do you think they're coming for our hurt #2 on the passing list QB to put him out by running around the blocks to disrupt the backfield?

Announcer bad, stadium sucks, players not playing up to par, Al disappointing.....
She and I both knew these players were C's at best but we had a glimmer of hope that a new coach could changes things. They should close the whole stadium. It is embarassing to watch our defense. It should be illegal. People get sick of watching other teams run and pass all over us.
I remmember when our defense pushed other teams backwards and we would wait for the second and third string defense to come in and root for them.

They need to have drug test.. i think some of these guys are juicing... how can they be so big... thats my question.

Just like the baseball fiasco.. they come back the next season and hit 40 home runs ...lol
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | October 28, 2011 at 05:42 PM
All our problems are about defense. If we just hold them to a touchdown ... our NC years we had games where our o did not perform well...but our d only allowed them 50 yrds rushing... unless we get a stout d we will always be in this mess.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | October 28, 2011 at 05:45 PM
I really believe that coach D could do much better with the Temple d then our d. Al likes big linebackers and cover guys in the secondary. We have guys who are big in the secondary...can hit but they are not good cover guys.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | October 28, 2011 at 05:59 PM
I'm certain AG is the right track. I'm not blaming the D coach, close to no talent and perhaps no football IQ.
I'd also say 3 games in 12 days is a stretch for this team, not enough talent or depth. they came out tired, not unfocused.
The thing I'm struggling with is the o-line and defender in the backfield immediately.
It seems to me The D is blown up over and over on the same plays for years now. Why can't these kids get their head around it?
despite everything,I.m saying we go 3-1 or 4-0 the remainder of the season.

No Canechic, but perhaps the NCAA would take a voluntary postseason ban and a 7-5 bowl invite would not be too high of a price to pay. Although that probably wouldn't be enough. They'll probably want to use The Phantom Zone from Superman on us.
Posted by: TonyCane | October 28, 2011 at 09:19 PM
You know, looking at that final series last night, maybe Miami needs to find a way to get Morris in there for a couple of series. I mean hell, that'll put defenses on their heels MORE, than lining TB up in the Wild Cat which only invites more defenders in the box. We're basically playing 9 on 11 when we line up in Wild Cat because nobody believes that TB's gonna throw, and they definitely don't believe that He's gonna throw to Jacory...

Posted by: Felipe | October 29, 2011 at 12:00 AM
Q: Did Olivier Vernon get blocked into the quarterback on that roughing the passer penalty?
A: “I don’t see the TV copy. You start to hear somebody saying this or what perception and reality is. We watched the tape, and on the sideline view he clearly got blocked and pushed from behind, No.1. And then No. 2 you can clearly see him trying to turn his shoulder upfield at the last second. There’s actually probably a half yard between his helmet and the young man’s knee. So I was convinced it was not intentional. I wanted to make sure we did our due diligence here. I brought him in and reviewed it with him and I’m confident there was no intent there. Olivier does play hard. He made a hard turn to the quarterback, and he did tell me he was trying to avoid him up high because he could see the kid start his windup. But there was a push in the back. I know there was an attempt by Olivier not to go for the kid’s knee with his head gear. That was clear.”

CC nothing like a speeding pothead is there LOL! I know how Nicole is feeling - once you really see that this mess starts at the top it is like the stages of grief - denial, anger yadayadaya. And Nicole is right - why can't we have both?

7-5 and a bowl win will be a decent season. That is probably the best we can hope for. This team did not take a step forward this year, but at least they did not take a step backward. I thought the GT win was a signal of improvement, but Virginia showed me that the Canes are still just too average, too erractic, too unpredictable and too inconsistent to rely on.
The Canes have an average-to-below-average ACC defense. The Canes gave up 28 points to a mediocre Virginia team, and not many teams can win ACC games when they allow 28 points to anyone. This D is one of the worst I have seen in watching the Canes play, and that includes Shannon's and Clappy's D. The aggressive playmaking D of the past has been replaced by a conservative defensive scheme for less talentend teams. The Canes also try to put in complicated wrinkles during games, and the players just don't understand it.
In spite of how we feel about Jacory's and the offense's improvement, the Canes have an average ACC offense. On offense, the Canes only scored 21 points against Virginia and that is NOT considered a good offensive game in the ACC.
If we want to know what a good ACC offense looks like, Clemson has a good offense. Jacory has done a good job, but a great college QB looks like Andrew Luck, Taj Boyd, Matt Barkley or Russell Wilson, and only Boyd arguably has more weapons than Jacory. Jacory had done what he should be expected to do, given that he is throwing the ball to at least two future NFL wideouts (Benjamin and Streeter, not counting the underclassmen). We criticize the TEs, but I have only seen a a couple of balls thrown to them against Virginia and they caught both, including the 4th down play where Walford was drilled in the back.
In person, Jacory is one of the skinniest starting FBS QBs I have ever seen and he has one of the weakest arms. Fisch has done a wonderful job of recognizing what Jacory does well and capitalize on it.
I am sure if you survey the number of games a team won in the ACC where their offense only produced 21 points, the answer would be zero or at least very few. The Canes left a lot of points on the table due to mental mistakes, missed assignments, penalties.
Although I am critical of my Canes inconsistency this year, I will continue to support my Canes with some tough love.
Go Canes!

USC is on probation and they only have one loss. Unbelievable how far Miami has fallen!
Posted by: Canechic | October 29, 2011 at 10:02 AM
We likely won't be going to a bowl game Windy. If sanctions loom then there is no better time than this to take our medicine.
I'm not sure what games the Legion has been watching all season but I see a team who has shown improvement over last season coupled with the growing pains that should be expected from a first year head coaching change.
That's not to say I wasn't frustrated and screaming at the preventable aspects of the loss to Virginia, I'm just trying to keep things in perspective. UM could easily be undefeated today. That is what is so frustrating for me. I want these kids to shut up the armchair-sit at home-never played the game-delusional losers-who come onto message boards and talk about them like they are robots who don't have parents who read the drivvle.
The Miami Hurricanes are better than they were last year, and by ALL INDICATIONS (and pending NCAA penalties) it looks like they will continue to improve as they move forward. That's enough for me.
Go 'canes!

This team is better then last year from what I've seen they just dont have the talent.
Look are DB last year they had Bharris DVD and Hill....who arent all studs but you trusted two of them and you could trust them with blitz......
LB were better last year you had 3 guys you trusted to line people up....so people and say the record is the only thing that matters but I disagree when it comes to a first year head coach.

Pro Cane Jon Jay is World Series champ!
That's 3 Pro Canes in 2 years. Huff and Burrell last year.

I believe we have gotten better, unfortunately it hasn't begun to translate into wins yes. I believe the team is becoming mentally tougher, however the talent on the defensive side of the ball is awful...DL is limited, LBs are young an inexperienced....DBs just bad, especially when you consider VT an Ray Ray are upperclassmen. I never thought I'd say this, but Jo Jo is the only one of them who I feel matured over the last few year. Having B.Harris stick around would have helped.
I think another year of off season workouts will make the team both physically and mentally tougher. Golden will have to make a decision on some of our older players. It may be time to cut our loses on a few. He said it best, potential get's people fired. We need to figure something out with the OL; IMO they're the reason we're not averaging 35 pts/gm. we're on the right track, just need to get more pieces of the puzzle plugged in. Unfortunately it won't happen overnight, and we're all worn out after expecting to be peaking at the point after RS took over.
Soon we'll begin squeaking out close wins instead of pooting on the last min drives..when that happens don't complain..just understand it part of the "Golden" process and will eventually lead to the bigger wins.
Hopefully we go to a bowl and decline it a part of self imposed sanctions. I believe our punishment will only be 2 year and not as harsh as others due to our compliance. We should be peaking just as smoke begins to clear.

To answer your question I did a brief survey of all the ACC games this year.
There have been 65 ACC games involving ACC teams this year (some games had more than one ACC team obviously).
Only 5 ACC teams have won with 21 of fewer points.
VT beat ECU 17-10.
Duke beat BC 20-19
UVA beat Idaho 21-20
GT beat MD 21-16
UNC beat Lousiville 14-7

This team does stupid things at the most opportune time of the game. Penalties...mistakes etc.
We also have some weak spots on the d that are being exploited by every team we play. Until we get the cbs to play consistent ie... keeping them from taking a 7yrd pass and walking down the side line for another 30 ...and our SS to read the coverage rite we are going to continue to get burned for long runs and passes in the middle of the field. Theres some players we just cant depend upon in pass coverage. I just hope we can get players who played d backs in youth football and HS so its in their dna to cover their receivers.
The most frustrating thing about this team is to watch them give points away and need to play catch up. Then work doubly hard at the end of the game and come up short by inches. I question whether they really believe they can win at any time and in any game.

Angry and I just talking...after reading I finished reading Butch's history at Miami to him...he reminded me that this year's team is full of SR's and many Jr's who will probably leave (not sure why but money talks). He said really Al will need at least 3 years after this year to make a dent. Like Butch who took his freshman from 1997 to 2000. Here's to Hope!

I dont blame the short yardage failures all on the o line. If they are bringing the backs up to play the run then its almost impossible for us to keep them from getting to LM before he gets started. I blame our qb for not reading the run blitz. A lot of our running is shut down because teams are bringing there backs up..especially when we do that sweep. That sweep worked good in the first two games but has been shut down the last couple of games. The d backs are reading it and coming up hard.

Top 50 Floridian (completely solar's idea, but was cool enough to ask me for some input and devise my own ranking) Tony LaRussa
World Series Champion Manager - again
Oakland A's
St. Louis Cards
St. Louis Cards
Second manager to win 2 World Series with an NL team and 1 World Series with an AL team (Sparky did it first). First manager to ever win pennants in both leagues. He'll never catch up to Connie Mack (no one will) at #1 for all-time wins & games managed - but, he's already #2 in games managed and will be #2 in wins next year probably in 2 months

SUM LIFE-less is a faUx college rent-a-home Stadium.
SUM LIFE-less Stadium SUCKS . . . especially when U're losing.
If this is the new home of the new millennium U, we better get used to mediocre attendance.
Unfortunately, the CANES have got no place else to play. So, the U has got to figure out a way to make the rent-a-home experience more bearable for U fans . . . some way to stimulate better attendance.
Hey, here's a crazy idea . . . PUT A BETTER TEAM ON THE FIELD.

Thanks Soup. So that means you have about a 7% chance of winning when you score 21 points or less.
