No matter where or how hard you look in college athletics, IT is hard to find.
Just a few years ago former University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer had by all accounts and at last report over 35 players arrested over a three year span while he was pontificating and strolling around the Swamp. Yet surprisingly, the NCAA never charged The Pope of Gainesville of not having enough of IT. Maybe that was because apparently Jesus himself was playing quarterback for the Gators who were busy chomping up their opponents on a consistent basis and winning a couple of National Championships at the time?
Just last year the Auburn Tigers got into some trouble for not implementing IT in the curious case of All-Star quarterback Cam Netwon, whose father allegedly accepted bags full of cash on his behalf as Netwon The Younger drove all kinds of fancy sports cars all around campus that he did not own or could even think about affording. Newton's case would be cleared in record time by the NCAA at the end of the 2010 season and just before their bowl game. Maybe it's because during that season the star QB and his Tigers were in line to play for the National Championship?
Let us not forget Jim "Tattoo U" Tressel at Ohio State who proved that he could not even understand the concept. It was eventually revealed that Tressel not only knew about several players receiving "extra benefits" but that he refused to report it. Then he made things even worse by trying to cover it up in spite of the fact the people inside and outside the program knew about it at the time. Maybe that was because one of the players, some guy named Terrell Pryor, was his star QB and the Buckeyes were playing for a National Championship berth that season. The Sweater Vest was unceremoniously fired for his apparent lies and misdeeds that showed he clearly violated the most basic tenets of the whole idea and intent of IT.
More recently in a stunning, shocking and scandalous case of alleged sexual abuse by a former assistant coach, Joe Paterno and several administrators at Penn State, in spite of their previously untarnished reputations at a highly esteemed institution of higher education, demonstrated that not only did they not have any of IT but took it a step further and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they couldn't even spell IT. As a result, the legendary JoPa was sent packing just a week after the scandal broke and just a short time removed from winning a NCAA record 409th game as head coach of the Nittany Lions.
What we are talking about here sports fans is a relatively simple concept to understand and one that is one would assume is extremely important to the NCAA: Institutional Control.
Yet, with just a few of the many examples listed above one has to wonder: How important is Institutional Control to the sanctioning body of inter-collegiate athletics?
Given the current NCAA investigation at the University of Miami involving illegal benefits to several UM football players and at least one basketball player the university as an institution is taking no chances of being accused of lacking Institutional Control.
That is why UM President Donna Shalala and Miami Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst made the decision on their own without consulting UM head coach Al Golden that Miami would NOT compete in a bowl game this season.
The announcement came with stunning swiftness on Sunday and almost immediately after Miami beat USF to become bowl eligible by winning their sixth game on the 2011 season this past Saturday.
The move to not go bowling was a bold, decisive move by UM administrators that serves as an example to others as what to do when your institution has been accused of NCAA violations.
The decision was not expected to be universally accepted by all Hurricane fans, coaches or players. However, you can be certain that the move was not done to please them but a much "higher power".
It should be clear to even the most casual observer that the decision to self-impose a bowl ban for the 2011 season was done to ensure the NCAA that at the University of Miami, if absolutely nowhere else in college football, that Institutional Control is alive and well.
And that is a concept that the NCAA and all Miami Hurricane fans can certainly understand, appreciate and support.
BOO yah!

He called out 10 plays in a row and was 10 for 10. I watched it after that and every call I could see I was right everytime. F n straight teams are on that tip also. Very bad for Al and Fisch on that point bruh.

Best news of the day...
If there is some positive news for the Canes, it appears Al Golden and his staff will have use of every scholarship available to them in this next signing class. Asked if he's been assured by UM the scholarship total for 2012 wouldn't be affected, Golden said: "Yes. Yes sir."

I may add that Aldarius Johnson was let go and that Ray Ray was suspended 1 more game later in the season as a preventive measure until the U administration completed it's investigation which revealed nothing wrong.

Posted by: SOUP | November 21, 2011 at 09:09 PM
SOUP, I've been saying the film is out on the offense for at least the last month and better defenses are reeling it in. With only one game left and Kuechly on the other side now is the time to throw more of the playbook at them until UM can get to next year and start reloading at the skill positions.
As for institutional control, I've said before, they should have rolled the dice with the infractions panel because the freshman needed the practices. But you've got a program suspending players for non-violations while eating dinner at nice restaurants, so what do you expect right now?
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 21, 2011 at 09:10 PM
OGV...the fact of the matter is that every team has film on every team and some OCs or DCs have been in place for YEARS.
That does NOT render them or their systems ineffective in one year or 10.
There is something else going on at Miami as to why the offense has stagnated.

OK - on a serious note. I agree with the decision. I don't care about those other schools mentioned. What I do care about is Miami and as we always say, the program is bigger than the player. Well, it's bigger than it's coaches too so let's sit out the year, swallow the pill, and move forward as quickly as possible. That seems to be working for USC so it will work for us.

With that said, why won't Golden come right out and say he will not take the Penn State or any other job. He stops short, or dances around it everytime. That bothers me.

NOT SO FAST.
First of all, the UM administration does not and cannot know what additional NCAA sanctions will be imposed.
Second, it is quite possible that there will be no reductions in the 2012 recruiting class simply because the NCAA sanctions will not be announced until after NSD, thereby taking effect in 2013 and 2014 and . . . ? WHAT'S SO GOOD ABOUT THAT? Moreover, recruits who sign in 2012 may be relased from their scholies to go elsewhere, if and when the sanctions come down harder than expected on the U.
I'M JUST SAYIN' . . .

nemo we will see... I don't expect a final decision by the NCAA before NSD...So Al will have his first real and complete signing class at least 30 scholarships plus expect some bad apples to transfer after this season...So if we have a top 10 recruiting class in 2012 by our standards we should be ok...

This roller-coaster ride is over. No bowl is the right decision. The NCAA won't impose 2 bans on the Canes and 1 on OSU. As far as the seniors--maybe the most disappointing class in Miami history. They should be mad at themselves for failing.

Knew the streak would end this weekend. Perfect storm of bye week players, Shockey's injury, Gore's injury, McGahee's injury, Moss's injury. Almost no chance. Kellen converted but was called for an obvious pass interference (apparently the ref had X-Ray vision, because it was only obvious interference from behind Winslow & Shields, while the Ref was in front of them).
Posted by: Felipe | November 21, 2011 at 11:50 PM
Greg Olsen doing more blocking than is typical (Detroit with the Wide 9), and covered by Detroit's strong Linebacker corps. Sigh. Was a great run though! Time to start a new one with Andre Johnson next week.

Sarasota, check out some of Jon Linder's tweets on twitter for some fun. Some people were "dumbfounded" and "floored" by the bowl decision. Incredibly humorous view on the fact that no matter how obvious some things seem to some of us, there's the 27% who will perceive a Blue Sky as Plaid.

As far as Auburn, Ohio State and Florida and "institutional control" are concerned, I always think of Jerry Tarkanian's famous quote:
"The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky that it's going to give Cleveland State two more years of probation.."
If you're winning, you can do what you want...they may wait until you are down to catch you but it's a great ride for a while...ask Calipari, Holtz, Eddie Sutton...and Dave Bliss...most of them would/have done it all over again several times...
Posted by: Texascane | November 22, 2011 at 12:26 AM
ust a few years ago former University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer had by all accounts and at last report over 35 players arrested over a three year span while he was pontificating and strolling around the Swamp. Yet surprisingly, the NCAA never charged The Pope of Gainesville of not having enough of IT. Maybe that was because apparently Jesus himself was playing quarterback for the Gators who were busy chomping up their opponents on a consistent basis and winning a couple of National Championships at the time?
Don't ya'll know-- winning cures everything-- including a case of ncaainvestigationitis!

OGV - if Crow does make it to Miami (still don't see how this nightmare of mine will happen, esp. with Kehoe standing in the endzone this past Friday when Countryside played Venice and lost) - and he does make it out onto the field as the QB, my mind will be so blown that you'd think I had just eating a bag of shrooms, smoked a bowling ball size hit of PCP and had a Columbian Booger Sugar snorting fest with (insert any South Tampa women's names)
His high school plays in a weak district. His OLine last year compared to mid level FBS school OLines. They relied heavily on the legs of their RBs last year and on their RB this year, Diomi Roberts. I said that when they get into playoffs, both Crow and Countryside will be exposed for what they really are ... overrated. They lose the first game in playoffs against Venice and Cane verbal Danny Dillard
Kehoe was there, standing in the endzone, even have him on tape yelling words of encouragement to Danny Dillard. Crow stunk that game - took sacks, threw picks, overthrew/underthrew his players .... much like he usually does. Hopefully Kehoe took what he witnessed first hand into account, went back to Fisch & Golden and said maybe they should re-evaluate offering him a scholly to be a starting QB
He passes the eye test physically, but damn, he sure doesn't pass the QB test
Kid seems like a team player, kid is the rah-rah type ... but if he does somehow wind up at Miami, I'd just ask him to add weight and learn how to block/catch to possibly be an H-Back or Fullback
Posted by: Six | November 22, 2011 at 02:46 AM
The bowl ban is perfect, knocks one out of the way of who knows just how many are left to be banned from (hopefully just 1 more, if that)
If you're going to choose a bowl to not go to, choose the one after a 6 or 7 win season b/c it doesn't mean anything anyway ..... b/c going to the Sun Bowl & Smurf Turf Bowl was so fun anyway
Sorry kids, you don't get your schwag bag from the Micron PC Papa John Magic Jack Bowl
It does suck in a sense for the players that did nothing wrong, then again, it's bigger than them, it's about what's best for the program right now to put this crap behind them
And it's still hilarious to me that other fans want to rag on the Cane fans/Cane players/etc. about Cane players getting into clubs for free, having strippers or prostitutes (allegedly), parties paid for, VIP paid for, etc. - when I just say, uh, isn't that what a lot grown men try to do and wish they could do on the weekends when they go out to party or on certain weekdays when they go out? But since these 18-20 year olds were getting it done and having it given to them for free - you're now poo-pooing it and calling Miami dirty only b/c you can't get it done yourself?
Love it

On the same day University of Miami seniors expressed sadness about a season cut short by a self-imposed bowl ban by school officials, a pair of key underclassmen — star running back Lamar Miller and leading receiver Tommy Streeter — discussed their futures with the program.
But before all that, perhaps a glimmer of good news for Hurricanes fans still aching over a what will be an abbreviated season: It appears coach Al Golden and his staff will be able to use every scholarship available to them in their next recruiting class.

The Streak
For the first time since December of 2002, no Miami alum has scored a NFL touchdown in a week, according to Elias Sports Bureau. To show how impressive this streak is, the next-best such streak is Pittsburgh at 12 weeks, Elias says.

I am all in favor of the self imposed bowl ban. Although it may be just a small message it does punish more of who were involved on the current roster than future recruits and underclassmen that were not. Lets hope that the scholarship bans in the future are kept to a minimum.

Grading (a day late) UM vs. USF
by Jorge Milian
I’ve covered every UM game for the Post since 1995 and Saturday’s was the first in which neither team scored a touchdown. But memorable? Hardly.

Sorry for my pissy mood last night, but running this blog and trying to have a life is not an easy balance to strike.
Apologies to all.

Here's my comment:
Personally Al doesn't leave. Leaving UM to go to PSU would really be a step backwards. In S.fla you have your pick of recruits as long as they can pass admissions. Would you rather have local talent in Fla or local talent in Penn, even if you are an alumni or not. Would PSU even be interesed knowing Golden was on staff during those suspected years. The biggest set back for this team which will be fixed going forward is true coaching, something they have lacked for years. Al and his staff will bring that "coaching" here and everything else will take care of itself. Al is building a football team. S&C were down, that takes time, o-line has been a train wreck for years, we will see where that goes. Coaching and Consistency is all this team needs. Now, if Holtz was really stealing signals then somethings up.

"The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky that it's going to give Cleveland State two more years of probation.."

My personal add to the quote: "And because Harland Gunn is a SR is graduating so I have been guaranteed that I get to go back to Guard next season from Tackle."
He is much better at G that OT anyway so no problem with that.
Streeter and his dad also said he will be back for sure next year.
Miller and Forston, yes I said it, may be the only two that bolt for the NFLU.

SOUP - I think Miller and Ray Ray would be the only 2 to leave.
I REALLY hope LM6 stays, but I'm ok with his replacements.
Ray Ray, unfortunately, seems like the type to "Take the money and run".

My take on the bowl ban is that they made the right move for the obvious reasons already mentioned (be proactive, continue to show cooperation and contrition, punish some of the players involved as opposed to future innocents). While I wish we could have gotten to six wins earlier in the season and announced it then, as long as we could start this season I'll take it.
As far as Golden Al bolting, I just dont see that happening. Even before the mess at PSU, IMO there was little chance of him leaving. He's just getting started to build the foundation in THE PREMIER RECRUITING HOTBED IN ALL OF THE NATION. You dont just walk away from an opportunity like that.
As far as Fisch's gameplan being compromised, that to some degree is going to happen to every OC eventually. Which brings me back to why I like the ban this season. This team needs to hit the weights BIG TIME. Being bigger and stronger than the guy across from you can make all the difference in the world EVEN if they know what play you're about to run. There is nothing like being able to say "we know that you know what play we are running here but we also know that you cant/wont be able to stop it".

The way the offense has played the last 6 years, it looks like the "U" swap their play book for game film, the way their opponents have defensed them, either that or the bookies have them on lock down.
Golden's not going anywhere, give it a rest.
Definetly, Washington, Forston & Streets, need to come back next year, the NFL shouldn't be in their vocabulary yet!
Miller could go either way, if anybody is ready it's him.
Armstrong will be a better pro than college player, mainly because he's a freelancer, trying to show out instead of playing within the system, or should I say it's all about him.
If Golden is bringing in 30 kids, that means there ain't but 3 Ships left. I hope his early evaluation signees are as good as he thought and if not we've wasted some space.
Those last three I hope he's thinging big & strong, because we need help in the DEE trenches.
I'm glad we're getting the bowl ban out of the way. We would only be playing in some scum bucket bowl anyway and really if we are not playing in one of the big 5 bowls, I could care less.
The "U", however did win a national championship. I have a magazine in front of me and it says The "U" was named the Sports Turf Managers ASSociation College soccer field of the year, well it's for 2010, but they just handed it out in Oct.

Good timing on this blog article Soupy. Front page of today's Wall Street Journal - article on Penn St and how Joe Pa managed to bully and intimidate the University into treating football player infractions differently (less seriously) than other students. That includes an incident of breaking & entering + assault committed by basically the entire defense (broke into an off-campus apartment and beat up several students) where almost all charges were eventually dropped.
Everybody's "can do no wrong" angel of integrity over the past 40 years also basically got the university's former "chief disciplinarian" fired because she consistently clashed with him over football player preferetnial treatment. He threatened to stop fund raising for the school if she wasn't fired. I believe she "resigned". Her replacement offically agreed with Joe Pa's opinions concerning player issues and implemented them as school policy.
IMO there should be no doubt about the control Paterno exercised throughout that university and his complete control over the football program. I believe he knew what Sandusky was and was complicit in an "arrangement" to retire the pedophile while sweeping all under the rug in order to keep things "in house". Its nice that he cared about his players going to class and graduating...too bad that he didn't care as much about 10 year old boys being raped.
I wish UM were playing a bowl only because I'm an eternal optimist and believe that a good bowl performance carries over into the off-season & sets a good foundation for the next year. But, I also dont think the admin would self-punish without some indication from the NCAA about what is likely coming down the line. So, I'll trust the admin that the act of self-denial and sacrifice now will help the program overcome the scandal and more forward in the future.

Soup,
Who do you think skips out? I got to believe that space takers;
Billy Sanders
C. J. Holton
Darion Hall
Tyrone Cornelius
Ben Jones all take a hike.
These guys maybe;
Jermaine Johnson
Keion Payne
Asante Cleveland. I know Cleveland has been hurt but they're putting every retread at TE and right now has Ford, Dye & Walford ahead of him and Maybe Perry. I can't see him staying another year and Corey White will be back.

Just listening to Spence's after practice interview, it hit me that Friday is the last time we'll see him play with that U on his helmet.
Gonna miss him, but will be nice to see him in the NFLU.

herb...I have no idea how many or who the players are and am not gonna guess and name names.
I am certain MOST know who they are and will prolly wanna leave on their own but Da Skreetz said there are going to be "some hurt feelings".
I guess that means some will be "asked to leave" rather than volunteer.
