Today in Tampa your University of Miami Hurricanes face the University of South Florida Bulls in an intra-State showdown between an established power (UM) and an up and coming rival (USF).
The Bulls (5-4, 1-4 Big East) are headed into a three-game homestand to end their season as they host the Hurricanes (5-5, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) in this late-season, non-conference game at Raymond James Stadium.
Last Thursday, the Bulls ended their four-game losing streak by beating Syracuse 37-17. USF running back Demetris Murray scored two touchdowns and quarterback B.J. Daniels led the Bulls with 21 rushes for 117 yards while adding a touchdown of his own.
Miami is coming off a tough 23-19 loss to Florida State in Tallahassee. The Hurricanes ran 18 more plays than the Noles and held a 383-259 edge in net yards, but Miami could not overcome three turnovers and a few costly penalties in a losing effort on the road in the ACC.
USF is 1-2 all-time against Miami, but won the most recent meeting between the teams at Sun Life Stadium by the score of 23-20 (OT).
UM head coach Al Golden has argued all week long that the Bulls have a multi-faceted offense that could give the Hurricanes defense trouble.
The fact of the matter is that Golden does not trust his defense as he knows there are not enough play makers on that side of the ball to control most offenses with multiple weapons.
Here is Canespacer Christopher Whelpton's analysis of this week's team match-ups:
If Miami wins the game the Hurricanes will become bowl eligible with only one remaining game against Boston College at home on the 2011 schedule.
But the question that remains is will it be an invitation that they will accept or decline?
We think they will.
Canespace Prediction: Miami wins easily by the score of 34-20.
Ouch!

I think the CANES is about to turn the corner. Until Golden gets the players he needs on Defense, which should start with this recruiting class, our D will be vulnerable. We need bigger/faster LB, and over powering DT who can tie up the middle.
We need to recruit DB, not converting WR/RB and then try to teach them how to play the DB position.
I think the future is bright for Golden and the CANES. I remember when Saban took over Bama he did not win his first year, but after he got his players the rest is history. I'm hoping Golden can duplicate the Saban blue print. GO CANES!

How many grey shirts do we have?
Who are they? What positions do they play?
Are any of them any good?
When they lose the grey shirts in January, do they count toward the 2012 recruiting class?

Where's that guy who was touting Bill Young's defense at Okie State...:)
Posted by: Texascane | November 19, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Best part of the ISU victory over ChOkie St is that this could finally be the undoing of the BCS. We have a scenario where we are legitimately staring at a rematch of Oregon-LSU or Bama-LSU or Bama-Oregon both teams losing to LSU, OSU and OU both lost to 4+ TD underdogs (OU could sneak in there). How could the BCS live if Bama were to get in the national championship and not even win their conference nor their division. And nobody wants to see a rematch of the most boring game of football ever to be played (LSU-Bama). Hell, in 06 when Michigan lost to OSU and we had the OSU-Turd championship a rematch between OSU and Mich would have at least been entertaining. I really hope we get Bama-LSU, that would effectively kill the BCS for good. Thank you Iowa St!

My money is not in Tampa today, staying home to see my Pens take on the Panthers tonight!
Posted by: canesteeler | November 19, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Golden's recruits don't have as many stars by their name as some of the FSU or UF recruits, but Golden's recruits can really play and he has a lot of them. Although we don't have as many DT recruits as I would like, these recruits are still high school players and some will grow physically once they arrive on campus. Some DBs will grow into LBs (such as Cookie), some LBs will grow into DEs (such as Robinson and Bailey) and some DEs will grow into DTs (such as Bailey and Ojomo).
Its clear to me that we got the best Norland recruit, Duke Johnson. When I compare Duke to the RB from Central, Devanta Freeman (who is FSU's leading rusher as a true freshman), Duke is even more talented and a difference maker. I have seen them both play live, and Duke can make an impact his first year, if asked.
Lamar Miller may be a little faster in straight-line speed (a track athlete) and Miller has immediate NFL potential, but I believe Duke is tougher and a more natural football player than Miller. Duke knows what to do and how to do it, and some of what Duke does cannot be coached. If Duke studies under Mike James, he can eventually be a force.
I hope Miller returns next year (and he should) but if he does not I also feel the future is bright.

Go Panthers!!!! "We see red!!! GROWL!!!!"
I don't even know what that means, but that slogan is all over down here....

Posted by: Canesfan4life | November 19, 2011 at 12:29 PM
He just publicly appologized on ESPN.
Posted by: Canesfan4life | November 19, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Ya know what? It's too bad Corso has to apologize for that comment. Yes, he's on National TV... but dude, it was funny, and perfectly in context for what was going on at the time, and in their situation.
I'm a teacher, and I wouldn't want that language used in a classroom, but this is a bunch of ex-jocks and coaches, in front of a screaming crowd, on a show intended for fans, ex-jocks and wanna bees...
C'mon already, political correctness has run amok...
I'm not a Corso fan, but he does bring personality to the show, and I hope he isn't crucified over this.

Furman...lol. There are some smiles out here in Texas. Will Muschamp is better known as Darth Gator for pulling an Anakin and leaving the Longhorns for the dark side of college football.

Papa Cane - Recruiting Update: Add another CB to the list. This one is a silent commitment and the name can't be shared. Baller. Sworn to secrecy.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 19, 2011 at 03:03 PM
Looks like Kelvin Cain will be starting at outside linebacker with Sean Spence in the middle and flanked by Denzel Perryman.

Whoo hoo section 216
Posted by: Hassan | November 19, 2011 at 03:17 PM
Props to Corso on the f bomb, there's political correctness, there's etiquette, and then there's ridiculous arbitrary rules established by George Carlin. More spur of the moment genuine emotion please.
Posted by: Felipe | November 19, 2011 at 03:21 PM
Did Pam Ward start the show off saying we weren't bowl eligible last year? HUH? Wow what a fail. Dunno if she meant USF but wtf? Fire hire ESPN.
Posted by: Felipe | November 19, 2011 at 03:31 PM
Great, Pam Ward is calling this game. Already screwed up and said Miami didn't make it to a bowl game last year.
Maybe she meant we didn't show up? Lol
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 19, 2011 at 03:31 PM
Jacory kills play call on very first play, and we gain 20 yds. THAT is why he's starting
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 19, 2011 at 03:34 PM
WTF
Posted by: IraqiCane | November 19, 2011 at 03:34 PM

Seriously someone needs to get these uniform designers under control.
Anyone seen the Malcolm in the Middle Episode where Hal goes nuts splatter painting? This is them. Unreal.
Posted by: Felipe | November 19, 2011 at 03:46 PM
this is what i was afraid of is a let down ..nothing to play for... the chances we get a big effort is not good
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 19, 2011 at 03:46 PM
Felipe - The uniforms are for military appreciation.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 19, 2011 at 03:52 PM
btw that CB recruit is not Tracy Howard Papa Cane says. My money is on Tee Shepard, the ND recruit out of Fresno CA. They were after him last I read.
The fact that this is a silent recruit and is coming out on USF day would imply possibly Nelson Agholor though (Tampa kid).
Posted by: Felipe | November 19, 2011 at 03:53 PM
Ohio Cane: I love the Army uniforms that are camouflage. These look more like splatter paintjobs on TV. Just sayin.
Posted by: Felipe | November 19, 2011 at 03:53 PM

easy touchdown jh pass to long
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 19, 2011 at 04:02 PM
Jacory seems a little too excited on some throws right now. Overthrew Benjamin in the endzone and Walford on the fade. Calm down
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 19, 2011 at 04:02 PM
Papa Cane sayz the silent recruit information is not related to Tampa. Guessing Nelson Agholor ain't it (he projects to be S anyway).
Tee Shepard my best guess.

Georgia Southern threatening to score again. 12min left down 21-38 to Bama but at the 13.
Posted by: Felipe | November 19, 2011 at 04:33 PM
weve got to have the physical edge on these guys... we just are not playing physical... the interior is sleep walking
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 19, 2011 at 04:33 PM
This is a gut wrenching game to watch... our D is proud right now, and our run game is "spotty" at best.
We need to strap up and HIT SOME PEOPLE!

Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 19, 2011 at 04:43 PM
Lets see a good two minute offense.
Posted by: IraqiCane | November 19, 2011 at 04:44 PM
We're not beating this 2nd tier team on EITHER line. Not good.
Posted by: roachcane77 | November 19, 2011 at 04:44 PM
we dont run consistently... we need to pin our ears back and run or play action on the fly... USF doesnt play anybody... if we dont beat them down in the fourth guys are not playing physical enough.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 19, 2011 at 04:45 PM
D is playing good? I disagree... we've been "lucky" at best...
Posted by: roachcane77 | November 19, 2011 at 04:45 PM
I'm happy with Jacory's play so far...
O-Line isn't blocking anyone.
