Your Miami Hurricanes will play their final game of the 2011 college football season on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, marking the conclusion of their first year under new head coach Al Golden.
So as we come to the close of another season we thought it would be appropriate to list a few things that we are thankful for this Thanksgiving.
So here is the short list of what we feel deserves thanks and praise this Holiday weekend:
- More U.S. soldiers coming home to their families for the Holidays from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- Head coach Al Golden for coming to Miami this year and hopefully being here next year and many more years to come.
- For former UM players Ryan Braun winning the National League MVP award with the Milwaukee Brewers and for Jon Jay winning the World Series as part of the St. louis Cardinals.
- Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch who directed the Hurricane offense and made a productive QB out of Jacory Harris during his Senior season at UM.
- Chris Freet and the entire crew at hurricanesports.com for the fantastic job they do in providing Hurricane fans the news we can use.
- The Hampton Inn hotel in Plantation for supporting Canespace and hosting UM fans from all over the Country both near and far.
- All of the former bloggers here at Canespace who contributed so much over the years including the recently departed Solarcane and Canechic and so many others who have added to the blog content and conversation over the last five plus years.
- All of the players in the Senior class who graduated from UM this season. While the ultimate goal may not have been accomplished we appreciate your efforts and contributions.
- Sean Spence for being the best and most productive defensive player at Miami over the last four years. #31 knew what it meant to wear "The U" on his helmet.
- The newly implemented "Hurricane Walk" at Sun Life Stadium. A great chance to see and cheer on the coaches and players close up on their way into the stadium before games.
- JoJo Nicholas for being a real team player and also the most consistent defensive back for the Hurricanes during the 2011 season.
- Tailgate parties at East 23 with real Canes fans like OGV, Canezilla, RaizeCane, Kenny and Monica and so many others. East-siders rule!
- Jacory Harris for being a true Miami Hurricane and remaining strong and committed the The U in spite of the adversity and criticism he had to endure during his career.
- Military plane fly-overs just before kickoff. They always inspire and never get old.
- For Art Kehoe coming home to coach his beloved Miami Hurricanes offensive line once again.
- Twitter actually becoming a useful tool to gather information instead of just random chatter.
- All of the great Hurricane fans and bloggers here at Canespace who make everything we do here on the blog fun and worthwhile.
It has been another interesting year of ups and downs, wins and losses and successes and failures.
I hope you enjoyed "The Process" as much as I did and followed along as we have narrowed down "The Short List To The Superdome" courtesy of our good friend Christopher Whelpton.
Beginning next week we will shift our focus to college basketball and then turn our attention to college football recruiting in January and February before following UM baseball in 2012.
Thank U once again for being on Canespace and Go Canes!!!
Thank You!

Good Read
Tommy Streeter Sr., Sam Spence and Rodney Harris sat outside Spence’s house recently, reflecting on their favorite topics – Hurricanes football and their sons Tommy Jr., Sean and Jacory — when Streeter approached Harris with a question.
“What are your feelings going to be Friday when you see Jacory on the field for the last time as a Hurricane?’’ Streeter asked, before addressing Spence with the same question. “Are you going to be crying with your wife?”
“I’m going to put on some big-boy pants,’’ replied Harris, claiming he wouldn’t shed a tear on Senior Day. Spence said he’d put on his own “big-boy pants.”
“I think I’ll cry for both of them,” said Streeter, not nearly as stoic. “They’ll both be leaving my son behind to get their degrees and go off on their adventures.
“After we graduated, life took us different places, but brought us back together through our kids. We’ll miss them being together next season.”
On Thanksgiving, when University of Miami players gather with their families, then return to the team the night before their final game of the season Friday against Boston College, three fathers who share a unique bond will say their prayers that all ends well for the home team.

Brandon McGee/Injuries
Cornerback Brandon McGee will be at a disadvantage Friday when it comes to interception attempts. But just because McGee fractured the back of his right hand last Saturday at South Florida when he hit a running back’s facemask while “going in for a tackle,’’ doesn’t mean he can’t do something nifty against Boston College, he reasoned.
“I mean, it has nothing to do with my legs,’’ said McGee, who was in a cast this week and said he is set to play against the Eagles. “It really hasn’t affected me much, really. I’ve been working on my one-handed interceptions, so I’ll see what happens.’’
Earlier in the game, McGee intercepted the first pass of his career.
• Injuries: Right tackle Seantrel Henderson (knee)has been ruled out for Boston College. Also out will be without wide receiver Davon Johnson (hamstring). Not listed: senior linebacker Jordan Futch, who was recovering from an injured shoulder and appears to be set to play in his final game for UM.

Gabe Terry has wheels, he ran a 10.9 100M and has legit 4.5 speed. For a kid that will play the SAM position and probably be 230 lbs he will keep that speed with good weight. He is about 6'3 and 210ish so he has the frame to add good weight and will be a monster after a RS season. Look at his tape, at LB one of the main things you look for is instincts and aggressiveness and he has both.
Posted by: Hassan | November 24, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Hassan, considering the depth at LB, or lack thereof, I'm thinking Terry won't redshirt

SOUP, I legitimately do not follow recruiting at all until only marginally (who's coming to visit basically, no Google search then either) after the year. It was a legitimate question especially after that quote from Golden. Take who you want, I won't be able to tell whether the guy's a bust until two to three years down the road anyway is my point of view on it.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody. solar, awesome to see you just checking by until next year I'm assuming! Or until Al Slogan takes the core values to his alma mater, whichever comes first.

Final Game
The University of Miami will meet Boston College in football for the first time on a Friday since the game that spawned a “miracle” on Nov. 23, 1984 — the 48-yard “Hail Flutie” pass that gave the Eagles a 47-45 victory as time expired.
If only that were the talk of the town when the two teams meet at 3:30 p.m. at Sun Life Stadium.
Despite the spin that national TV will likely put on the matchup, Hurricanes fans know this game is anything but about Doug Flutie or last-second miracles or day-after-Thanksgiving rivalries. And though the Eagles (3-8, 2-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) had their own woes this season, they seem to pale in comparison to the Hurricanes’.
Miami (6-5, 3-4) will play Friday for the final time this season after self-imposing a bowl ban for 2011 as a proactive measure related to the investigation into former UM booster/convicted felon Nevin Shapiro and his relationship with the school.
It’s a bittersweet Friday for the seniors, many of whom will be playing their last football game. But it’s also a bittersweet day for the Hurricanes faithful, who wonder if this will be first-year coach Al Golden’s final game at UM as well.
“I know he’s here for this program. I know he’s going to stay,” senior linebacker Sean Spence said when reminded of the rumors connecting Golden and the vacant Penn State job — or any job, after not being warned of the NCAA matter when he was hired by UM. “I trust him and I believe in him as a coach.”

Report: Sue Paterno wasn’t told to leave Penn State pool
Posted by John Taylor on November 25, 2011, 7:46 AM EST
Reuters
Wednesday evening, a “source close to the Paterno family” — hey @ScottPaterno — told the Patriot News that Sue Paterno, wife of now-former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, had been “told to leave a Penn State campus pool where she normally works out.”
As it turns out, that “snub” may have not been that simple.
Thursday evening, the same paper reported that Sue Paterno “was not told to leave a Penn State campus pool where she works out.” The paper goes on to write that “[t]he natatorium was closed for Thanksgiving.”
The paper also notes that discussions are underway to determine the ability of the Paternos to use the Lasch Football Building facilities going forward.
And, as an aside, if you want to talk about JoePa’s legacy in Happy Valley, this uncertainty about the wife of a living legend swimming in a pool that her husband either directly or indirectly built would be Exhibit A in the short-term.

Mike London would never coach here. He is a made man at UVa
Posted by: BEERicane | November 25, 2011 at 11:52 AM
4real I'm sure him leaving would positively effect the recruiting class. We should easily be able to get a new coach here with possible sanctions looming and also have him hire a solid staff of assistants. It's been so easy for us in the past We have been so successful lately that we should be able to reload right?

Like Al says lets enjoy the moment... but i still cant understand all the speculation that he is talking to PU. With all these big contracts its not like it used to be in the day... i just would have little respect for a coach who goes somewhere for a yr and bolts.. i dont believe Al is like that .

Enjoy "the moment"? Which moment do you mean?
The finishing-at-best-seven-and-five moment? The no-bowl-game-this-year moment? The almost-certain-severe-NCAA-sanctions moment? The ACC-whipping-boy moment? The mass-exodus-of-nearly-all-the playmakers moment? Or the possibly-losing-the-third-head-coach-in-ten-years moment?
So many to choose from.

I would have little respect for an administration that omits to mention to a potential hire that he's taking over a sinking ship.
Posted by: dj moonbat | November 25, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Mike London is a heck of a coach - 2nd year at average program, inherits Al Groh's sub-500 team. Average talent at best. Wins at Miami and Tallahassee and is poised to challenge for the ACC Coastal. Don't think London will be on the market for the Canes job, though. If UVa beats the Hokies, he will be one of the hottest names in coaching, anywhere!
I think Al Golden will come back. Golden may be a former Penn State alumnus, but that program is a real mess right now. With the lawsuits, potential sanctions, Paterno's shadow, recruits backing out and the spectre of this scandal, it will be a tough place to coach for a while. I also heard that Golden may have a buyout clause in his current contract.
Golden is building a solid recruiting class and has some solid asst. coaches - some are better than others. I have a feeling that Shalala and Co. are waiting to see how the Canes play today before they make a decision on what a possible extension should look like. On the other hand, Golden is trying to negotiate and is leaving his options open.
If Golden doesn't return, I think it shows that UM has some serious problems with stability and leadership, beginning with Shalala and the Board of Trustees. The failure to keep him could set the program back for several years, UNLESS they have a really good candidate out there that wants to come to Coral Gables.
Posted by: WindyCane-Forecast1 | November 25, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Im not close enough to the college to know what is going on so i cant say what is going to happen. But i think Al blaming the U for not knowing about the Shapiro scandal is an excuse .. Thats what you pay your representative to find out..lol If hes going to sign another contract with a school that is in deep dodo how does he know its not going to be worse than the U without his representative finding out... gosh no one takes personal responsibility any more.. just pass the buck... where are the coaches who can trust that the buck stops at their desk?

Posted by: TJL | November 25, 2011 at 12:33 PM
dj, of course we're together on this. Everybody who takes shots at Shannon's expense to pump up Golden is just full of it. I'm not sticking my head in the ground and pretending 2011 was some fantastic Hurricane year on the field when it obviously wasn't and throwing poo at the former regime just to make myself feel better about the new one.
I keep hearing about how much better coached and conditioned this team is; well, it didn't translate to a single extra win in the regular season so obviously those claiming to see both of those are hallucinating.
Not that it's making me call for Golden's head just yet, I'll refrain from that until he can't win in 2013 with his own players in the upper half of the roster, but let's stop with the, "obviously he deserves a lot of money and years tacked on his contract because Satan's cousin couldn't listen to his old coach about Ponzi midget," talk.
TJL, you didn't hear that Miami Northwestern QB's are overrated and we don't want them because they're spread guys who always bust out in college? Or you aren't buying that line of bull either? Gray Crow can't get here soon enough.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 25, 2011 at 12:44 PM
OGV, in terms of straight up W-Ls we are no better off than last year. However, we have not been blown out of a single game this year. In fact we COULD HAVE been 11-0 at this point. Same couldn't be said for Shannon at any point during his tenure. So in terms of making progress and getting closer to where we should be, we are getting closer even if it is only from a score differential standpoint.

So my tickets for the 1st row, section 122 just showed up from Fed Ex, except I'm six hours by car away from this game and I never was sent a confirmation that my card would be charged and the tickets sent which would have alerted me they would arrive at 1 pm on game day and allowed me to call and cancel the order immediately instead of post facto if I had received it.
Fortson's on the tickets though so that's not a good omen, maybe it's really for the best, LOL.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 25, 2011 at 01:14 PM
dj, Kirby Hocutt, Satan called him his cousin talking to Al Slogun on solar's last animation.
BEER, Shannon didn't get to coach his best recruiting class in their best college football year, their senior and red-shirt junior seasons. For a coach who has more prior experience, Golden should be doing a lot better than Shannon was in 2010 with a year younger roster and one less year of head coach experience (really two less years when you look at Shannon's career in 2010 vs. Golden's in 2011) especially when you look at the results for who we played rather than the preseason expectations for them coming into the year.

OGV, point taken. I've always been a Shannon fan, personally. I feel most of his struggles as a coach were more reflective of his assistants and coordinators than him.

dj moonbat,
I can understand your level of frustration considering the expectations a lot of us had coming in to this
season. But I don't agree that all of our playmekers are gone. Allen Hurns, Street, Lamar, MJ, Clements, Hagens, Dye, Walford, Dosett, Thompkins, Crawford to name a few who are back on offense.Granted, we lose Jacory, Byrd, and Travis, but we have a lot of experience coming back. We'll also have a big blocking tight end when Cory White comes of the DL at 6'-6" and 275.
Things are not all doom and gloom.

U guys check out the list of supposed visitors coming down next month? Unreal!! True ballers! Yet we ain't got but 5 schollys left! If Goldie really does plan on staying then why would he give out all his schollys b4 all the REAL recruits have a chance 2 visit?

Gorten - QB Jacory Harris sporting mohawk 2day for final game, just like he had as a freshman. Has come full circle. Nice symbolic touch by him

That's the video dj, but all of solar's animations are good for at least one LOL per vid.
BEER, it's fair to say Randy learning to head coach on the run at UM meant his organizational skills were lacking, thus the assistant turnover for one, but his tour of multiple football programs this year means he obviously realized that was substandard and was committed to bringing that portion of his coaching abilities up to speed. I expect him to rebound and excel if he lands a decent job at a program that is committed to winning. UNC for one could do worse than hire him for example.

4got 2 mention tennessee juco dt committ Damien Jacobs is scheduled to visit, along with dt Nick James, Tyriq Mccord (who had Uf his leader until uf started showing more luv 2 higher rated de's) & last but definitely not least Stefon Diggs canceled his visit 2 uf & has guaranteed UM his last visit. But need I remind u our beloved head coach admitted he doesn't shop 4 cadillacs :(

First of all, relax. Breathe, 4-Real, breathe.
Second of all, Just because he doesn't SHOP for Cadillacs, doesn't mean he won't TAKE one. Hell, I don't shop for Mercedes', but if someone said "Hey, will U take this Mercedes 500 series off my hands and drive it around for 3-4 years?", I sure as hell wouldn't say no.

Steve Gorten - I'm told John Melear, QB for #UM in 1951, will lead Canes onto the field before today's season finale vs Boston College

4-Real, you can't wait three hours to worry about which committed prospects Golden is going to try and flip on the visits? You have to do this now, really?

Oh, I know. I had just forgotten to bookmark the Youtube channel.
That particular video is even better than most. "How about 15 thousand, and I just coach the Miami Dolphins?" Ha!
