The opening lines to the famous Led Zeppelin song "Your Time Is Gonna Come" goes like this: Lying. Cheating. Hurting. That's all you seem to do.
When it comes to college football recruiting and the practice of "negative recruiting" then it appears that the 70's rock band got it right.
If you are in the business of making up harmful lies or partial truths about other universities, their campuses, coaches or players then you understand the old school lyrics.
Certain coaches have been known to adopt the practice of negative recruiting in an attempt to sway potential recruits to their school instead of their in-state or conference rivals.
Some coaches have been known to spread slanderous rumors through unofficial back channels and at times even flat out lie directly to recruits when meeting with them face to face during a home visit or an official recruiting visit to their university campus.
But does this practice really work, and maybe even more importantly, does it have the potential to backfire in certain situations?
When these negative recruiting tactics, let's call them exaggerated falsehoods or simple lies just for the sake of argument, are eventually exposed as false, can those actions come back to hurt the coach and the university that is employing these negative recruiting tactics.
The answer apparently is very simple: YES.
The recruiting process is a delicate dance that is based on a relationship and trust developed between a coach and a player.
When that trust is broken the recruiting relationship is often damaged beyond repair and the dance ends abruptly.
Just hypothetically speaking of course we would never accuse any particular coach, in say a city like Gainesville, of utilizing this tactic or unknowingly claim that a certain other University, in somewhere like say South Florida, may be getting excessively harsh NCAA penalties now would we?
Or that same head coach would falsely be accused of spreading rumors that a certain head coach at a University, let's say in Coral Gables, was going to leave said university to take the vacant job, at let's imagine a University like Penn State, or anything like that.
But who knows, in the big scheme of things that are possible, it could happen right?
Not that we are in any way implying that the current head coach at the University of Florida would ever stoop to such low levels or do such a despicable thing.
Unless of course several recruits actually told the local media, the national recruiting services and several sources directly that the Gators' head coach actually "lied" to them or did something similarly unethical by intentionally misleading them just recently during the recruiting process.
Yeah, that would never happen, right?
yep

the last blog was spot on. but look at Michigan. last year ranked 108th. with a proven defensive coordinator they are a too ten statistical defense. now Michigan had the players. just needed coaching. Give D'No time

Mississippi coach Renee Ladner was finished with her news conference and walking out the door. But the last question posed to her — about University of Miami center Pepper Wilson — had lingered.
“I’ll take her,” Ladner said. “Six-six? Oh yeah.”
UM coach Katie Meier wasn’t offering, however, especially after Wilson scored a season-high 15 points in the Hurricanes’ 76-48 victory over visiting Ole Miss on Saturday night.
The Canes, ranked ninth in the nation, improved to 8-1. Ole Miss, which entered on a five-game winning streak, fell to 6-2.

Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan released a statement today on the arrests of players Cody Larson and Erik Murphy over the weekend in St. Augustine.
He said both are suspended from the team, pending further review and action.
“I’m aware of Cody and Erik’s situation and very disappointed with the news. The two are currently suspended from basketball-related activities. I’m not going to comment further until I have more information and get a chance to meet with both student-athletes.''
The two allegedly broke into a car early Sunday morning in St. Augustine and were later released on $5,000 bond.
Larson and Murphy both face felony burglary charges. A third man, Joshua Adel, is charged with principal to burglary. Abel is a team manager.
Police said Larson and Murphy went into Scarlett O'Hara's Bar and Restaurant around 2 a.m. Sunday and claimed to have lost a wallet. They said the men tried to get close to an employee who was counting money from the night.
Bouncers then told Larson and Murphy to leave and a few minutes later, they saw the men allegedly breaking into a co-worker's car in a parking lot across the street, according to police.

Ex-Gator Hornsby starts 90-day jail sentence
Former Florida football player Jamar Hornsby, who violated probation by a Mississippi conviction, has been ordered to serve 90 days in Alachua County Jail, which started on Monday.
"Hornsby's demonstrated course of conduct over the last few years does not make me optimistic that he is capable of change, but it's his choice as to whether he wants to live in free society or in jail,'' said Bill Cervone, the Gainesville state attorney. "If he makes the wrong choice he'll be back before the courts again. I hope he both learns and grows up."
Hornsby was on probation after a plea agreement made while still in Gainesville, in which he also agreed to pay nearly $9,000 in restitution and court costs for allegedly making nearly 70 fraudulent charges on the gas card of Ashley Slonina, a UF student who died alongside a walk-on football player in a motorcycle accident in October 2007.
In a letter of apology read to the court by his attorney, Huntley Johnson, Hornsby said at the time he took full responsibility for what he called "a mistake'' and he described Slonina as a friend.

CBS' Danielson: Muschamp has 'no chance'
CBS college football analyst Gary Danielson, when asked today about the predicament Will Muschamp is in as the head coach at Florida:
"I believe Will Muschamp is doing about as good as he can. To me, I really think Will Muschamp has a butter knife, basically a dull butter knife of talent in a league that everybody else has steak and you need a steak knife to win in this league. He has no chance. He does not have a team put together to compete at the highest level at this league, especially with an injured quarterback.''
Florida is 4-4 overall, 2-4 in the SEC with a four-game losing streak in Muschamp's first season as head coach. The Gators host Vanderbilt at 12:21 p.m. Saturday.

I was told there was a new format at Canespace and to please return and comment.
Three guys re posting Twitter tweets all day that anyone can get first hand at Twitter faster, while the amount of new bloggers decreases weekly; vs dozens of bloggers speaking their minds on various subjects relating to the University of Miami and many other subjects like it was here in the past makes scratch my head.
Mh, pb, calvin, cav, Truth, JSQ,canes1,bg1906, canechic excluded from Canespace,
Six, hurri, daytoncane, KL canefan,autumn,canescanescanes,estaban,
sailorcane, and others deciding to spend their time at other sports blogs
VaCane, ocala, djmoonbat, MaryLou, fran, DTC, roach, Alph, old skool, matt,CGNC and others posting 1/4 as much as they did
has turned Canespace into a very sterile boring reference site to retrieve second hand Twitter news from.
Look at that list of names again, think about the personality and uniqueness of each and realize there were days when 75 to 100 percent of them percent posted here daily.
As one of the original 2 members and thinking back on the effort and time I dedicated to this place it DOES indeed make me sad to see it go from something original, to an article link site.

umike, you and Ohio and native are all doing great work.
I too hated the negativity and constant insults between portions of the bloggers.
I left because of it. Now I get emails every week to check in and see whats happened to the place.
The thing is the bloggers have to make the blog what it is, the site owner is like a bar tender, he is just the host. A bar tender with too many rules is going to end up with a lot of empty stools.
Maybe one day there will be a new guy with a new place that will be as fresh and new as Canespace was the first few years, and every Cane fan can get back together
You guys are doing what you are asked to do and doing a fine job.
My best to you and Happy Holidays to your family.

A bar tender with no rules has to spend every day and night breaking up drunken fights between patrons. I was not going to spend all of my time doing that.
If it take having "empty stools" to allow me to keep my sanity and make blogging FUN again then so be it.
I am not doing all this just to make myself miserable, which is what I was due to the constant negativity and fighting on here, I can tell U that!

No big deal at all, IMO. I've been signed up thru Typepad since I first posted here.
As far as I know, it's the slow off-season that's limiting posts from fans. There's not a whole lot to talk about right now for a regular fan with no "inside news", simply because there isn't anything other than workouts and recruiting going on.
Not to mention no bowl game upcoming, and the season being over as of 2+ weeks ago.

If you already have a Facebook or Twitter account you can sign in from there.
And if you can figure out how to sign up for a Facebook or Twitter account then you can certainly sign up for a FREE Typepad account directly if U choose.
The problem many are having is that there work place blocks employees from signing into Facebook, Twitter or Typapad so THAT is an issue that seriously limits comments during the day.

IMO, U both have valid points. 86 needs Canespace to be a fun sideline again instead of a headache inducing, stressful 2nd j-o-b. Solar - U r correct in that most of the old, original crew have either moved elsewhere or otherwise detached somewhat from blogging. This changing dynamic can be both good and bad depending on perspective. New blood is almost always good, but the flavor and debates/discussions that we used to enjoy have changed.
I cannot speak for anyone but myself; but a lot of things changed over the last few years with my work and personal life, all of which have conspired to reduce the amount of time I spend blogging. I still get on as much as I can and read ALL the articles, but its true that I don't post anywhere near as often as I used to.
Also, for me; I invested emotionally in the hiring and success of Randy. Seeing his tenure play out the way it did was depressing and now I'm more guarded. I think I'm a voice of reason when it comes to judging coaching performances too quickly, but I'm also not ready to jump on anyone's bandwagon until I see proof on the playing field. Well...I confess...I'd probably have jumped all over Leach's bandwagon if he'd been hired. Our D would still have sucked, but we'd have outscored just about everyone on the schedule!
It seems like somewhere a line was crossed and the tone of many of the debates changed into a "I'm right, no matter what, and I see every situation as proof of such". Instead of a give-n-take where Canespacers actually thought about what others said and considered a different POV from their own. When bloggers get like that, there's no point in commenting so the number of posts dwindles. And, fewer new bloggers bother taking the time to post.
As to the Typepad thing...if that is what is keeping people away, I have no sympathy. I signed up with Typepad at the start because it's EASIER to post when it keeps U signed in. There was no Facebook requirement; it was thru Typepad directly and all that was needed was a valid email address. It takes less effort than 1/2 the posts I read.
Finally, I hope Solarcane will consider coming around and posting again. IMO the blog benefits from your perspective. Peace

Maybe they have changed procedures? I've always used the same one, so wouldn't be aware. Maybe Facebook bought Typepad? LOL They certainly have the means.
I'd feel put-out if I was forced to do this thru Facebook. I don't sign into Facebook very often and don't want to start.
So, if this is what Typepad is forcing people to do, I guess some sympathy is warranted...

Solar...good to see U around. I only wish that if you had something constructive to say about the blog you would email me or call me you have both contact options. But since U decided to go straight to the blog then I will respond here as well.
First of all U know that blogging in general has changed GREATLY over the last 3-5 years. First was there was the Facebook explosion, then the great blog divorce here at Canespace, and now in the last year or so the incredible explosion of Twitter that has made most blogs obsolete.
Second of all the losing, losing and MORE losing has hurt the blog as well as the entire CaneNation. People don't want to listen to the bitching and moaning for 6 years straight now do they? That is obvious.
Thirdly people move on, they have lives and they find different interests and ways to use their time.
But just like your self imposed departure from Canespace the disappearance of most of the bloggers you mentioned have absolutely NOTHING to do with the new format of the blog and you know that.
If I have to point it out to you then here goes. Let's break it down one by one shall we?
1. Mh, pb, calvin, cav, Truth, JSQ, canes1, bg1906, canechic excluded from Canespace.
NOT EXACTLY: MH, pb and Cavaleer haven't been on here for over three or four years now and don't blog anywhere. None of them were ever banned they simply stopped blogging.
Canes1 is welcome anytime at Canespace and he does drive bys every now and then. I saw him at the USF game and we chatted for a while about the "good old days".
bg1906 can come by anytime he wants but he is busy doing other things at other sites and on the radio.
Calvin is old news. He was banned over two years ago for bashing UM players at the request of MM01 who later left with his Dad RandyCane and now neither blogs at any of the free sites.
JSQ and The Truth are also old news and had to go for valid reasons and you know why. Oh and BTW "The Truth" no longer blogs at any site after having a major falling out with the JSQ a few months back.
Canechic had to go because as U know she became negative beyond reason and losing touch with reality from week to week ("Canes wil never win another game, Canes will win every game this season"). That is on her not the blog.
2. Six, hurri, daytoncane, KL canefan, autumn, canescanescanes, estaban, sailorcane and others deciding to spend their time at other sports blogs.
That is their choice, no harm no foul. The "other" sports blog has a crew of about 8-10 regulars and that's all. Of all of those you mentioned only Six is a big loss for this blog as most of the other hardly blog a lot or about add much content.
3. VaCane, ocala, djmoonbat, MaryLou, fran, DTC, roach, Alph, old skool, matt,CGNC and others posting 1/4 as much as they did.
That is all for various well known and valid reasons in each case is different.
OcalaCane got married and is taking care of three young children and opened his own business a year ago he has not a minute to breathe.
Fran has had severe health and medical problems and MaryLou is in the same situation. Neither ever blogged a lot anyway as they both have lives to live.
MattinNY, Alph and Old skool never blogged a lot before or now. They read everyday but post occasionally that is all.
VACane, CGNC, Roach, DTC and others still post comments all the time.
The new rules had to be put in place to filter out the trolls and the negativity. Since I am here running the blog on my own it had to be done so at least the remaining few could have a FUN experience instead of the negativity that polluted the blog day and night.
Solar...thanks for your many contributions to Canespace. Let's remember that U left the blog on your own because of all of the negativity and by your own choice to go "outside and play".
Now U come back just to complain about it and act like this is "news" and that the few people who left the blog over the last 4 years did so as a result of recent format changes or too many rules.
The two things are completely unrelated and you know it. And, if people don't want to follow a few rules then so be it.
Here they are:
1. This is a Miami Hurricane sports blog. Let's talk about UM sports and sports in general with the occasional "off topic" comment.
2. Be respectful, be productive and try to be fair and balanced in your comments.
3. Sign in through Facebook, Twitter or Typepad so we can weed out the trolls.
Is that so hard to follow? We would ALL love to have you around the blog if those rules are not too unbearable for U?
BLOG ON!

SOUP...you have inspired me to try something. I'm going to start a blog..NOT A CANES BLOG..but a local sports blog covering the youth, middle school and high school sports in my area. I want to be around and involved with the kids..close to the action..and once I get enough traffic I am gong to seek to make money from advertisers...the "Academy Sports" of the world etc..I think that would be very cool

Same here. I actually get my cookies scrubbed by the company and have to log in to Typepad every once in a while, and have no trouble.
Do the same on my iPhone too, and it logs me right in.
UMike, is it possibly an issue with a firewall setting or something if U are using a home PC? I don't know much about computers, but I know enough to be dangerous. Lol

Whoa!!!
Solar coming in and doing a drive by
Speaking for myself I didnt get involved with alot of discussions that went on with many of the bloggers named because I knew what it was going to lead to
After a few posts about something then you can be sure the insults would start flying around and instead of an adult conversation about the subject that subject was totally ignored and became about who was tougher when typing on a computer
I can speak for two bloggers I thought crossed the line for me. Calvin(besides his 5 mile posts LOL)was when he went on full attack against Jason Fox. Fox took time to sit down for an interview and Calvin just hammered everything about him. A very classless move if you ask me(which nobody has)
Canechic was always fun to talk Marlins baseball with since I am a fan of baseball. When she called a friend of mine a "racist" on here is the 1st time I ever was really upset with anything she ever said. Thats my main man and I just couldnt let that comment slide
It all about the `Canes
Lets go `Canes

Sebastian - what is your opinion of the new Marlins' ballpark (RIP OB) and current spending spree? Is there a market for baseball in S.FL? And...whats the deal with the new logo?!?
Since the Marlins weren't around when I was growing up in S.FL, I've always been a "casual" fan only. I was excited when they managed to win, not 1 but, 2 World Series! But didn't grow into a more serious fan because of the ownership's actions following those championships - dismantling champ teams is a great way to piss off fans!

FTM here....so any word on any recruits this past weekend?

I don't follow much youth sports, other than my daughter's soccer (she's currently on the top team in her age group in N.TX's ODP program). BUT...I know a lot of others do, especially as college recruiting is concerned. U may want to consider a recruiting slant to your blog - NOT from any individual school's perspective, but from the local athlete's perspective. So, you'd cover ALL recruiting for your local area not just the kids focused on UM (for example). Just a thought as people do get really worked up about recruiting...

IMO the Marlins will do whatever it takes to make sure their new stadium is packed
The 1st year fans will come out but after that its going to drop fast
I dont know whats in these players contracts that they just signed but if they done have no-trade clauses then expect another Marlins great sell off after 2 years
Buehrle will give the starting rotation some much needed innings. Reyes is injury prone and closer Heath Bell is better then what they had
Now if they could just trade Hanley for some pitching and maybe a CF they will have a chance at 1 of the 2 Wild Card spots
The best part is going to be listening to Ozzie go on his rants in the pressers LOL

ohio, you hearing anything on the recruits from this past weekend?

Lamar Miller to NFL. Expected. Coach Golden has been recruiting for weeks to fill the need. We will bring in 3 RBs this year. #NFL #Draft

Awil80..according to a few people..we should of or did get at least 2 commitments from this weekend..although none have been made public. That is just from little tidbits here and there I picked up

Even though Smiley didnt have the type of season `Cane fans had hoped for having him for next year is a very big deal
Smiley could put up 1,000 if he can just stay healthy. He is a hard runner that will wear defenses down
Posted by: Sebastian | December 12, 2011 at 03:05 PM
PapaCane eluded to some upcoming "Welcome to the U"..and I believe Dewey stated the same to Rivals. Of course..nothing confirmed as of yet
Posted by: UMike | December 12, 2011 at 03:05 PM
Sebastian..if he is healthy and doesnt dance he could go for 1,500 imo

Posted by: DallasTX Cane | December 12, 2011 at 02:32 PM
The new ballpark is GREAT! I went by there a few weeks ago and it looks marvelous darling. I'll go when I am in town for work but I do NOT see people coming from Broward or Palm Beach County on a weeknight in rush hour traffic to attend many games.
IMHO it will turn out to be the biggest WASTE of $$$ ever by the City of Miami. They will do fine for attendance for the first 1-3 years then nada.
They built a BUNCH of store fronts at the street level under the parking garages and guess how many they have leased out as of today? ZERO, that's right ZERO!
Hate the new logo. I think the design is too busy and the colors are atrocious.
Posted by: 86Cane | December 12, 2011 at 03:11 PM
Hopefully Lamar lands in round one.
Posted by: The Dude | December 12, 2011 at 03:12 PM
Alot of his dancing had to do with his foot-toe injury
That type of injury makes it almost impossible to push off to get started. He was much more effective when the play called for him to just blast straight ahead
I give him credit for going out there each week and not sitting any games out. He could have easily done that
Posted by: Sebastian | December 12, 2011 at 03:12 PM
so are soup and 86 the same person?
Posted by: Awil80 | December 12, 2011 at 03:12 PM
Everybody knew that Miller was gone to the NFLU, no surprise there. We will be fine at RB with Smiley, Clements, Duke, Danny Dillard and prolly one more I am forgetting?
Posted by: 86Cane | December 12, 2011 at 03:17 PM

Posted by: Awil80 | December 12, 2011 at 03:12 PM
Yes. He was originally 86 and that remains a "more serious" persona. SOUP is a little bit of a nutcase and has problems being taken seriously by others. lol
