You are a legitimate and certified five star high school football recruit.
Rivals, Scout and ESPN have reviewed your film, talked to your coaches and all have decided to rate you among the top 150 players (out of 100,000 HS players) in the entire United States of America.
Letters have been arriving daily from Alabama, USC, Notre Dame, Oregon, FSU, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Ohio State, LSU, Miami and many other prominent national college football programs.
Head coaches from some of the most prestigious programs have visited your house and met with your parents and practically begged you to attend their institution of higher education.
You are almost certainly going to be an incredible success story and can't wait for the huge crowds to embrace you, the national awards to surround you and the National Championships to fall into your lap. In fact you have heard that the Heisman Trophy is desperately waiting to be yours!
Stop the media hype machine and ask yourself one simple question: "Why is it that so many five star players wind up as an epic fail?"
Well let me give you just some of the reasons that these talented players fail:
Academics: A, B, C, D...Uh, what comes after D? Some players never get accepted and others flame out quickly when it comes to the main reason they are in college in the first place: getting an advanced education. It usually goes like this: "Coach when you said I would actually have to go to class and study and pass a test I thought you were just kidding dawg! You see in high school the teachers, well you know, they just looked the other way and gave me the grade. And that kid I had take the SAT for me well he was cool with the $250 I gave him so I could make the millions later on."
Drugs: Puff, puff, pass. Too often too many college athletes get caught up in the sordid underworld of drug use. While alcohol, steroids, amphetamines, cocaine, pain killers and other prescription and over the counter drugs are often abused by young adults nothing takes the place of the king: marijuana. When you fall asleep in the drive through of a McDonald's not once but twice while waiting for your food then you know you got the buzz working for you. Or is it against you, I forget? Who cares, just...puff, puff, pass.
Sense of Entitlement: You were a total stud in high school. You rated five stars, fast cars, loose standards and faster and looser women and all that. You wore #1, you got preferential treatment everywhere you went in your home town. So you walk into the college head football coach's office after seeing the depth chart that was just released today and you say: "Uh, Coach there must be some mistake here, you see I am a starter at (Name your position). I wear #1, I am a five star stud and just what the hell is going on here?" The Head Coach says: "Son, sit down here and let's talk about your attitude and lack of commitment to the...as Johnny five star walks out, transfers and heads to Memphis or Marshall or some other school like that.
Coaching Changes: Bobby five star was recruited by Head Coach A to play position X in a spread offense or position Y a 4-3 defense. That all sounds well and good until Coach A gets fired in your second season and then Coach K comes in and decides that you should play position G in a pro-set offense or position Z in a 3-4 defense. Bobby five star realizes he is totally screwed, figuratively and literally and goes into a major sulk or just transfers.
Lost sense of Ego: When you were in high school in Louisiana you were the big man on campus (BMOC). Everybody knew you from the name on your jersey since you were in Pop Warner football. The high school chicks dug you, the guys wanted to be you and the adults all respected you. Then, you go to college. Nobody knows you. The chicks are like: "Who is this freaky guy with the crawfish?" and the fans are all saying: "Show me what you got home boy from the Bayou!"
Can you think of any other reasons why so many extremely talented, highly rated, five star athletes fail at the college level?
Why do so many five star recruits fail? Let us count the ways...

OK, here goes, translated "insider info":
1. Things are looking REALLY good!
2. We have three silents and three schollies left.
3. Goldman and Avery have their names on two of the three IF they pull the trigger.
4. Otherwise there are 2-3 other potential candidates IF they go somehwere else.
5. The work is DONE. The signatures are waiting.

With the state of the program the past 5-8 years many of you think the stars are irrevalent. Why is it the stars matter for the LSU's, Alabama and so on? I know you have to coach them up once they arrive but if you fill your roster with a bumch of 1 and 2 stars, chances are you are sitting at home during the BCS games. In Golden I trust!
Posted by: canesteeler | January 16, 2012 at 09:25 PM
Wasn't Tyrone Byrd a 5 star? And Dajleon Farr? Thing is this...I get the feeling that we've REALLY been managing our talent for a while now. I get the sense that any of the guys I just named would've done way better elsewhere...ok ok, look at it like this. Would Sammy Watkins have had the same year here as he did at Clemson??? Doubt it...

There is a LOT more to the insider info than that, but that is the tip of the iceburg. TRUST ME!
IF U want to be an insider you have to do three things:
1. Post everyday, all day.
2. Bring important info of your own.
3. Keep confidential secrets like you work for the CIA.
I have shared well over 100 CONFIDENTIAL emails from Da Skreetz and SaveUMFootball with the current "insiders" without ONE single leak yet.
That is what keeps us "In The Loop" without any fear of losing contact with our sources.

Posted by: SATXCane | January 16, 2012 at 09:34 PM
great work on the blog. Stars matter but coaching more so. There has been a void for year at Miami in that department. Saban would likely have wone more NT than at Alabama if he came to Miami. My hope is Golden can coach the talet up and we become relevent again.

Stars matter between the #1 ranked class and the #100 ranked class. But between the 1 and say twentieth class it doesn't make much difference. It's about player development. It's about scheme and it's about getting the right process. If you get those you succeed. If you get coaches like Miami has had over the last ten years then you get coaches that turn top ranked recruiting classes into failures.
Posted by: TheWhat | January 16, 2012 at 09:49 PM
I think we will see player development under Golden. I like the large turnover of the roster because it is tough to change a culture that has been in place for the past 5-6 years. I think some of the kids who decided to leave early are banking on the fact their development for whatever reason (from coaches to individuals)did not progress. I think NFL teams know UM players from the past 5-6 years were undercoached, unmotivated and in most cases have big upsides. The Sam Shields and DVD's are the latest examples.
Posted by: canesteeler | January 16, 2012 at 09:59 PM
What I want to know is how Bryant, one of our new verbals for 2013, likes the U cause of its business school and then states he wants to study psychology. From what I remember a psychology degree comes from the school of arts and sciences.... Now, if he can play on both sides of the ball it will all make more sense to me!
Soup: It actually would be really interesting to hear how things went down with all after NSD is over, but I'm sure some of the things can't hit the public eye...

Posted by: pbcfrcane13
No, he is the first coming of Al Golden. The chosen one who will bring balance to the BCS and end the reign of the evil SEC. If Chuck Norris played college football, he would chose Al Golden to be his coach.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 16, 2012 at 10:40 PM
USAFCane, it's already happening. Trust me. I just hope that Miami is proactive with his contract to make certain that he is not lured away before his work his accomplished.
In terms of recruiting, Golden will prove to be for Miami what Mack Brown has been for Texas over the last 13 seasons.

SOUP you are on fire! With all your good articles and great optimism about the Canes 2012 recruiting class it's very refreshing. Let's keep it this way.
No negative comments allowed on Canespace til after NSD.
You know the best recruits read Canespace all the time.
Be a cane and you will live the Golden years.
Fear the tie! In Al we believe!
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | January 17, 2012 at 06:41 AM
Another excellent article.
Listening to Al's archives with Sid, his two greatest strengths are recruiting and player development.
"Recruiting to your core values."- AG
It really does feel like an Us vs. the world sort of situation:
1. The preconceived notions of "thug U."
2. Negative recruiting against UM.
3. Shapiro.
4. Title envy.
5. High academic standards (weeding out a lot of the riff-raff, as mentioned above).
Though there are plenty of reasons to go to UM: ladies, NFL alumni, ladies, great academia, ladies.

Posted by: Hassan | January 17, 2012 at 08:38 AM
I have recorded 15 UM games in the last 3 years on the Dish reciever/recorder. I call up one when I am up at 3-4 AM waiting to get breakfast for my caregiver/wife.
Well The reciever has blown up, no access to what's on the hard disc. They are sending me a new one. I do not have an external hard drive and really never felt any reason to buy one, until now. I have a good LG DVD recorder but never figuered out how to record from Dish Network, so I guess I will have to get someone in here to help. and but a supply of DVD's
Speaking of DVD I met his aunt yesterday in Orange City, she is a nurse who works at a very special pharmacy where she measured my legs for "TED Hose" that my cardiologist wants me to wear for 30 days. DVD plays for Oakland and she is a Dolfan and had mixed emotions when they played. Very nice, lady my wife (retired RN) talked with her mostly medical stuff (over my head).
Go Canes

Hassan...Obviously the two BIG names left on the board for UM are DT Goldman and OL Avery.
I have not heard that either one will pick UM but there is always a slim (10-20%) chance that one or both do.
There are two flips posible from FSU and UF that I have heard rumored around, but we will only know for sure on NSD.

Quick Golden Al story:
A couple of weeks ago my father and his buddy who were teammates/roommates while going to The U were having lunch at Deli Lane in So. Miami when they saw Golden Al and his fam walking in. After they were seated my father and his friend approached the table, introduced themselves as former players and thanked him for all he had done so far in his short tenure as HC. They also expressed their gratitude at the long term commitment he has made to the program and wished him the best of luck going forward. Before leaving Golden stopped by their table, said it was nice to meet them and made some small talk before going on his way. Shortly after that when my father requested the check the waitress informed him that it had already been taken care of by Golden.
Just thought I'd share...

By my Count we have 14 RS-SR/SR on the roster and about 15 RS-JR would could grad and perhaps leave football or stay with the team but without a scholly.
I would guess we have somewhere around 17ish to hand out next year minus 3 for NCAA restrictions, we have 4 commits, and Junior days and camps coming up. We could be done recruiting by the June Camps.

A few things to look forward to on National Signing Day (Feb 1st) to those who don't follow recruiting closely:
1. When I post a couple names that have their LOI faxed in to UM, U are gonna say "WHAT?! OMG, I DIDN'T THINK WE'D GET HIM!!"
2. When the day is closing, and the full list of recruits that are signed up is posted, U may be so excited U go outside and spin around in your yard like U are 5 years old again.
3. There will be a couple disappointments, as usual with most NCAA teams on that final day, but overall everyone will be elated at the depth and sheer magnitude of this class. Including EE recruits.

Sounds like he'll carry on the tradition of Jax area recruits flaking out at the last minute. Kind of indifferent about him, I like his size but was kind of turned off by how he was just going through the motions in the 2nd half of the state championship game. Granted his team was getting pasted by 30+, but still didnt like the way he seemed to have quit out there.

LSU hasn't been able to pass since Matt Flynn lit us up 6 years ago or so.

SOUP, Ohio, Hassan or anybody who has connections to the Football team send out the word that Shaq Thompson is open and looking one visit will seal the deal if Golden gets him down here

Oh, this group of coaches knows. I don't know if they care or want the kid, but they definitely know.

That kid is a beast, no doubt about it. Would love to have him at UM.
Just don't know if they KNOW he wouldn't come to UM, or has issues, or what. No idea.
Maybe they ARE after him...?

The last few days of recruiting are like watching the last 10 laps at Daytona, anything can and will happen.

I was told that the "silents" are SOLID to Miami. As U know anything CAN happen but I was told there was almost NO chance they back out.

There IT is right there.
However in this case "The BIG One" is not a huge crash but a huge signing day surprise.

Don't have to worry about bragadoshis Mike Davis, he's going to play for the Cocks.

Honestly... Goldman, Hamilton, P.J. Williams, or even A. Young wouldn't surprise me. They're all in positions of big need.
Goldman would leave me the most satisfied as it would help offset the loss of Ojomo.
That being said, a big name receiver would shock me (Diggs, Agholor, Green-Beckham).
Posted by: LB | January 17, 2012 at 06:59 PM
My NSD shockers would be Agholor and Fowler. Think Goldman is already spoken for but would love to get Borque, PJ, Leonard, Hamilton or Young. Can't wait to see how this shakes out!
