This is the fourth part in our continuing series evaluating the last five years of five star high school football recruits according to Rivals.com...
The 2009 recruiting class had the highest number of five star players of any of the last five years but surprisingly it only had the third highest number of major impact players.
Even more surprising to many college football fans is the fact that RB Bryce Brown (seen below with 86Cane and OcalaCane at Canes Fest 2009) the #1 rated overall player in the Country in 2009 (who flirted with and then dumped the University of Miami before choosing Tennessee) was NOT one of them.
Here is a detailed summary of the 2009 Rivals.com five star recruits for 2009 including some of the individual player's rank, school and performance:
Rivals Class of 2009 Five Star Player Quick Facts:
- Total Players: 33
- Number of impact players: 7
- Percentage of impact players: 21%
- Number of players who transferred: 5
- Number of Players who suffered major Injuries: 4
The 7 impact players and their rankings from the 2009 class were:
- (2) WR Ruben Randle, LSU
- (5) QB Matt Barkley, USC
- (6) RB Trent Richardson, Alabama
- (9) LB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State
- (11) CB Dre Kirpatrick, Alabama
- (12) LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
- (27) CB Greg Reid, FSU
The 5 players who transferred from their original LOI to another school:
- (1) RB Bryce Brown (from Tennessee to Kansas State)
- (17) S Janzen Jackson (from Tennessee to FCS school McNeese State)
- (18) QB Garrett Gilbert (From Texas to SMU)
- (23) DT Gary Brown (from Florida to East Mississippi CC)
- (33) LB Dorian Bell (Ohio State to Dequesne)
The 4 players who were impacted by major injuries:
- (15) DT Jacobbi McDaniel, FSU
- (19) ATH Patrick Hall, USC
- (22) Christine Michael, Texas A&M
- (31) CB Corey Brown, Ohio State
In summary, the 2009 class was above average in terms of the number of five star players (33) and about average when it came to the number of impact players (7). The class was also average in the number of transfers (5) and players who were impacted by major injury (4).
Heading into National Signing Day, it is tough to crown a champion of the Sunshine State. Miami holds the honor as of today, with Randy Johnson leading a group that includes nine of the top 50 in-state players but the Florida Gators may have the inside track to walk away with the Sunshine State Championship. Will Muschamp's group has eight of the top 50 but remains heavy contenders for the top two prospects - wide receiver Nelson Agholor and cornerback Tracy Howard. As for out-of-state schools, Alabama is the only school with multiple commitments from the top ten prospects in the state - wide receivers Chris Black and Amari Cooper. - Chris Nee

“Everyone amps it up and goes all out this weekend,’’ Farrell said. “They’ll tell you how important you are to their program, how high they have you on their depth chart, make you feel like they have to have you. There is more of a sense of urgency than earlier in the recruiting process. They want the kids to leave campus at least confused or, at most, convinced.’’

Hassan...U need to take it easy on the rumor mill issues especially when U come on here and try to state them as FACT.
I'm jus sayin...

Coach Golden had to deal with brutal allegations, an incomplete roster, suspensions, and press bias. Still locked down talent. Wow.
Facing potentially crippling penalties, he signs an extension and fully commits to the program. How can you not love this guy.

There IT is right there.
Now, it is ALL about winning those games on the field!

Top 10 recruiting, who cares! Miami's 2008 was top 3! Just get better Canes!!! I would rather have the athlete with a serious chip on his shoulder. Yes, you do need top level guys, that said there are a lot of top level guys rated 2 or 3 stars!
Posted by: Jack | January 29, 2012 at 09:35 AM
Perryman 3 stars ! I fell he will be our best LB since Jon Beason, Vilma, Williams ect.

Thanks Montreal. Well I hope we get him back. The Pens are playing lights out right now without him or Jordan Staal. We will see if they keep it up after the break

Happy Sunday, everyone! Anyone else having
trouble sleeping with all the redcruiting madness? :)

Soup, i never stated as fact. Go read my repky i specifically said it was a rumour. Not to mention 90% of what we post is rumour and we are not reporters so why are we held to this journalistic standard. I am pretty sure everyone in the cane blogosphere knows most anything anyone writes is opinion or rumour until it comes into the public as fact, in which case we will include the source info.

Hassan...don't get your knickers all in a wad. I was NOT trying to criticize, just advise. Carry on...

Darius Hamilton announcing Tuesday night..not sure the time
Posted by: UMike | January 29, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Hassan. Although not journalists that is a level of reliability and legitimacy that individuals must maintain. I like many reading this blog thought Miami got a commit so while you may have intended for your post to be deemed merely a rumor it was not by myself and others. By trying to be first on the inside info business there is a fine line between responsible reporting and tabloid reporting whether you are a journalist, blogger, or joe schmo from the street. Also for anyone who posts inside info keep in mind the reputation of the site. A couple of false rumors and a site can be viewed as a hack. If you are not the owner/moderator of the site you owe that to the website and those that run it.

Some FSU homer on twitter:
Scout.com's recruiting experts are in agreement that Ronald Darby, Eddie Goldman, Tracy Howard will all pick #FSU on signing day.
lololol.

And I thought Cane fans were delusional lol

Cane commitment Reggie Northrup visited Clemson over the weekend. Get the latest now on when he will announce a final decision and what schools are his finalists. Read on
Never seen a committed guy who still has finalist and an announcement date. If your committed your "announcement" date should just be to sign the papers in front of your friends and family..you shouldtnt have "finalists"..I dont care if we get this kid, move on two FSU to Duke Johnson can burn you!
Posted by: UMike | January 29, 2012 at 01:04 PM
UMike...Carl Pelini is a joke...when your own brother has to run you off it says something about your abilities...
I give him two years before he implodes and pulls a Jim Leavitt on a sportswriter or a player...no way is this a guy to build a program.
Posted by: Texascane | January 29, 2012 at 01:16 PM
A lot of Rutgers bloggers pushing for Al Golden...I feel really bad for people who don't live in the real world...so easy to get your hopes smashed...
Christobal would be a great hire for them but I don't think they could even get him to bite...program on the rise at FIU...

Quiet sunday, it's very odd . . nothing on the recruits visiting?
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | January 29, 2012 at 01:46 PM
Out of our recruits/commits who are on the fence who stays who goes?
Stays
1. Crawford
2. Northrup
3. Hamilton
Goes
1. Howard
2. Young
3. Williams
I would love to get howard but all we hear is rumour on him coming it does not seem like a strong chance he is coming.
Posted by: Hassan | January 29, 2012 at 02:16 PM
Hassan..Ima trade you Northrup for Howard lol..I dont want this kid any more personally
Posted by: UMike | January 29, 2012 at 02:24 PM
Texascane:
Saw a couple of them pushing more realistically, for Mark D'onofrio, who was the recruiting coordinator or something for Rutgers from 2001-03.

Just the quiet before the HURRICANE!
Posted by: SOUP | January 29, 2012 at 02:30 PM
Hassan...I agree with your projections except for Young. Just a gut feeling no real info but I think we get him.
BTW...Da Skreetz thinks that Bush is as good or BETTER than Howard, especially when it comes to playing physical with WRs at the LOS, against the run and in tackling.
Posted by: SOUP | January 29, 2012 at 02:32 PM
I'm glad it's quiet. Announcements of commitments will just get some desperate coaching staffs(staves?)--like Georgia for Avery Young, or Will Muschamp who seems desperate in general-- to double down before 2/1.
Posted by: Felipe. | January 29, 2012 at 02:35 PM
Saying on ITU blog Hamilton said if he doesn't like the new Rutgers staff he coming 2 tha U! Rutgers got 3 days!

Good thing we got the heat/bulls game to kill our sunday afternoon!
Are the recruits still on their official? Coz if so, Golden should take them kids to Triple-A arena and watch that game, that'd be a very good recruiting tool!

Just based on how Tracy spoke about Tally, it didn't seem like he is too excited about going up there for college, but why in the hell does FSU fans think Tracy is theirs to lose? LoL
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | January 29, 2012 at 03:15 PM
Ey Sling, just out of curiosity, how come you have Ray2x getting beat by a VT dude as your avatar? Ain't there a better picture of Ray2x out there actually doing something good instead of getting his ass burned? lol
