The well known and frequently followed college recruiting service Rivals.com recently published an article in which they revealed the names of players that made the Rivals five star football recruiting lists over the last five years.
The story was written by the talented Steve Megargee, one of the National feature writers for Rivals who researched the football recruiting classes from 2007 to 2011 and gave a brief analysis of each players success or failure at the college level and in some cases also provided their NFLU draft status.
We thought it would be interesting to do a more in depth statistical analysis on his reporting so that we could try to get a "big picture" overview of just how good a predictor the five-star high school recruit designation was at predicting which players would be successful at the college level.
So we start off this series of five articles by framing the big picture around the lists of players that received the coveted five star label over the last five years. In the coming days we will examine each class more closely in our series of consecutive articles.
Here is what our initial summary analysis found:
- Between 2007 and 2011 a small and select group of only 144 players received the five star rating from Rivals.com.
- The 2009 class was the largest with 33 players making the five star list.
- The 2010 and 2011 classes were the smallest with only 26 players on the list.
- In 2008 there were 30 players that received the five star label while in 2007 there were 29.
So out of the 100,000 or so high school football players in the U.S. in any given year only around 28 players (144 / 5) earned the five star designation on average over the five year period.
Based on this fact alone one would assume that almost every player receiving the prestigious five star designation by one of the top recruiting services in the Country would be considered a "can't miss prospect" that was soon going to win national awards and National Championships, right?
And, as usual, you would assume wrong. In fact, you would be very, very wrong. Which is why it is usually foolish and at times even dangerous to make assumptions based on opinions instead of analyzing the facts.
Which is why we are here to debunk the myths and to provide you the facts. Here are some of the initial facts we found by studying the Rivals.com five star recruiting lists over five years (and we hope that you are sitting down as you read this!):
- Out of the 144 players designated as five star studs only 36 players or about about 25% went on to becomes what most people would consider to be stars or impact players at the college level.
- That means that approximately 108 players or about 75% of the five star recruits over the five year period were just solid, decent or average players who did not have a major impact on their teams success for various reasons.
- As of last count at least 19 players (13%) transferred from the original school they signed a LOI with on National Signing Day.
- From the list we determined that about 18 players (13%) suffered major injuries that had a significant negative impact on their careers.
So what that tells us is that only 1 out of every 4 five star recruits will go on to even bigger things in college or beyond that in the NFLU.
It also shows us that 2 out of every 10 five star players will either transfer to another school or suffer a serious injury that impacts their college career.
So before you go counting all of your five star recruits before or after National Signing Day you should be cautious not to go predicting their individual success or their team's potential accomplishments.
Simply put, counting on five star recruits to be difference makers has been shown to not be such a good predictor of a team's success after all.
All right

Good Stuff,
Ken Dorsey told me he hates when people try to be traded to a good team instead of workign hard on the team they are on. "Dwight Howard" lol
This team needs workers, we are not Temple who have to work TWICE as hard as even elite programs to get 9 wins, We can match Talent for Talent with nearly any top 25 program but our effort has not been there 52 weeks a year since the Clinton era.

He answered, "60%"

Papa Cane - Did You Know: 2012 Early Enrollee QB Gray Crow, from Clearwater Countryside, was 22-2 over 2 seasons as a starter. Expected to redshirt.

Ohio, 22-2 sounds awesome. Can't wait for the spring games.

Well done. Rumor has it that there are two more EE's in this class.
Any ideas? Lockhart?
Posted by: LB | January 18, 2012 at 09:51 AM
LB, there is definitely at least 2 more. They'll be announced today or tomorrow.
I'm assuming one is Lockhart. I don't know who the other is. I'm checking on that as I type.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 18, 2012 at 09:55 AM
Still not thrilled with Crow, he only good feeling I have is how Fisch changed Harris rather quickly. I still expect Dewey to start eventually.
Posted by: UMike | January 18, 2012 at 09:56 AM
UMike, Dewey has the higher upside. They'll both benefit greatly from coming in early. I think Crow will also benefit even more with a red-shirt year that he's more than sure to get.

Riddle for the day?????????
What nfl head coach was recently hired that was with his last team for 17yrs and only won 5 playoff games in 17 seasons but for some reason people believe he's a hell of a coach?

It would be a remarkable get to have Tracy Howard come to UM. However, I don't see it happening. He's going SEC, IMO.

Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | January 18, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I will rewrite it some
Did anyone see the photo of our 7 EE's?
Crow has legit QB size they said he is 230, he looks bigger then both our LB's witt and Kirby are both 208. Jorge Milian says that is the same as Spence his freshman year, Actually Spence was 195,212,216,225 his years at Miami. By fall camp Kirby and Witt can pack on 12-15 lbs of Muscle they can weight in at 220 ish, Which is great for a freshman LB. If either or both can RS can be near 230+ where is where we want out outside LB'S.
In the Pick Flowers looks big, I met him in person out of his pads and he is a legit 6'5 ish and 300+ wide body athletic dude.
I heard gadbois was not 6'8 but the "source" who told me that must not know how to gauge height. Look at the pic he is in the back and is still way taller then Flowers. He looks to be a legit 6'8 and currently weight 292 after losing 28 lbs at FT union working out getting in shape. He will be the Protype OT here at Miami in 3 years. I believe size and strength wise this kid projects out to be 6'8 and 320+ lbs of muscle. He only recently really hit weights hard and you can tell he is not really big in the arms and shoulders yet. His legs are still skinny, but he is still country boy strong. Weight room projections for me for this kid are 450+ Bench, currently 370 and 600+ Squat currently 470.

Good advice Ohio, where in Ohio are you?
Does anyone think our DE from PENN will be a sleeper in this class? Those kids up there tend to be like CHick very hard workers. ALso I think people sleep on CHickolo he is not some kid with only work ethic he has alot of talent he runs a 4.7 and really has strong hands for a young guy. He is middle of the pack Pass Rusher but as a freshman he did a GREAT job of setting the edge and i thought his BACK PURSUIT was phenomenal.

As far Mid-East as it gets. Right on the WV border by the Ohio River.
Just South of Steubenville if U've ever heard of it. Actually Joey Galloway went to high school about 5 mins from me. Use to hang out with him back in the day before he went pro.

Believe me Golden will get us there quickly he’s a beast.

Thanks everyone for the recruiting updates.
PS. Interesting article. But the statistical analysis is defective, I think. The proper methodology is to compare the percentage of college level "difference makers" who were five stars to the comparable percentage of "difference makers" who were four stars and likewise three stars, etc., and then consider the relative confidence intervals in each pairwise comparison based on the respective standard errors.
Perhaps, a proper statistical analysis would confirm the preliminary inference that five stars, as a practical matter, are overrated. Then again, maybe not. Lots of four stars are overrated too.
Call me crazy but I'd take a D.J. Williams or a Kellen Winslow, Jr. over a three-star or a four-star recruit (even one from the 305) ANY day of the week.

To me, stars are a pretty fair indicator of a kids talent level and thats about it. They dont tell you how well the kid does in school or if the kid has some kind of diva complex. Thats where actually recruiting the kid comes into play. There are thousands of kids every year trying to get D-1 scholarships so the pay sites can only be so accurate. They miss on people, even great coaches do, but most of the 5 star guys are supreme athletes.
Posted by: The Dude | January 18, 2012 at 01:01 PM
Miami's 5 star busts have been due mostly by (in my opinion) coaching staffs. I think if Kyle Wright chose USC over Miami he would have been a top draft pick. They actually knew how to develope QB's. Larry Coker couldnt do that. He needed they players to do everything themselves.
Posted by: The Dude | January 18, 2012 at 01:05 PM
One 5 star athlete that shunned he U and didnt amount to much......Vidal Hazelton the WR poor kid went to USC never played went to Cincy tore his Knee up bad luck.....

Vidal was a super talented kid. He got stuck in a super talented depth chart, got frustrated and left. Then of course there is the injury. 5 stars doesnt mean 1st round draft pick. 5 stars means super talented kid.

Posted by: The Dude | January 18, 2012 at 01:05 PM
NEGATIVE.
Kyle Wright had an arm but no head for the game. IF he was so talented the NFL would have found him and he would be on a team right now.
SEE: SAM SHIELDS, DVD AND JIMMY GRAHAM.
Wright got several tryouts in the NFLU but could not even make a practice squad.

Ohio,
I have some production duties which take me in the 50 mile radius around Wheeling. I like it up there.
My home base is in the Charleston-metro.
As for Leggett: he's now 30 miles away from me after NSD. Funny.
Wasn't UM supposed to come up to Marshall after their game down in Miami... or did that change?
Posted by: LB | January 18, 2012 at 01:19 PM
Thedude your right about Vidal Hazelton i guess its just sour grapes on my end with him it looked like he really wanted to be in coral gables and was told he was gonna be the man but idk he decided to go against that.... Kid was sick... and your right 5 star means your sick straight beast.
Posted by: UpNorthCane | January 18, 2012 at 01:20 PM
LB, awesome! I'm right across the river from Wheeling actually. About 5 mins away if U head West on I-70. Very small city. Actually borders on being a town. We do have a mall tho lol.

I couldnt disagree more. He has NEVER been around good coaching.
Posted by: The Dude | January 18, 2012 at 01:28 PM
Agree with you Soup about Kyle Wright- just not smart enough. Having said that, the offensive line that he had to work with contributed to his gun shy attitude. But even at SC, I can't see him becoming a star.
Posted by: j.w. | January 18, 2012 at 01:29 PM
Wright did get tryouts, but the point is he was already shot. He was basically a high school QB trying out for NFL rosters at the most important position.
Posted by: The Dude | January 18, 2012 at 01:31 PM
USC got J.D. Booty drafted. That kid doesnt have the pure talent of Wright.

Quick question for cane fans....
Who do you prefer Sean Taylor or Ed reed? and why....
this is the toughest question ive been presented.
Posted by: UpNorthCane | January 18, 2012 at 01:44 PM
Sean Taylor.
This is probably the hardest question I've been asked, actually. Obviously, there are MANY things to absolutely love about both of them.
My immediate reaction was Sean, only because of Ed's injury past and age.
If both were alive RIGHT NOW, I'd take Sean before Ed.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 18, 2012 at 01:49 PM
^^ Sidenote, Sean was my favorite player EVER for UM. Very close 2nd is Andre Johnson.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 18, 2012 at 01:51 PM
Ohio i say the same thing . For me Sean was just out of this world and their will never be a safety like him in the league he would be that x-factor who can cover Calvin Johnson, dez bryant, andre johnson, gronkowski etc....... but then i say to myself damnn ed reed is a monster too straight playmaker and the best at reading qbs
Posted by: UpNorthCane | January 18, 2012 at 01:52 PM
Regarding Kyle Wright, I'll say this, No he didn't have a great career for us but how many offensive coordinators did he have while he was here? he had at least 3 maybe 4, in the 5 years he was here and really no Qb coach unless you want to call Todd Berry that. The o-line wasn't that great and we really had no depth at WR. Leggett & Moore were flops. Sam Shields was a lost cause. Akeem Jolla transfered and he had one other WR who was here for 6 years and I can't remember his name but whatever, he played for dopey, enough said. Would he have been better at say, USC, probably.
Reegie Northrup to visit FSHOO, this weekend. If the dude is going to bolt, do us a favor and beat it now!

Taylor>Reed
Reed is more instinctive and a better pure playmaker, but Taylor was obviously more physical and his gifts allowed you to do more with him. Reed in his Prime was the BEST Defensive player in the NFL for a year or two, In Taylor's PROJECTED Prime he would have been possibly the BEST NFL player of all time. Many of his Teammates with the skins said he was already the best football player they had ever seen. The Scheme they ran in washington sucked and Taylor was not used right but he was still a beast and go ask the NFL's 3rd all time Rec T.O how he felt about Taylor. Watch the tapes he got alligator arms everytime they played. Reed is a HOF but he did not do that do you. We are comparing Gold and Platinum here. Taylor probably could be a Pro Bowler at 9 positions, ANY of the 4 DB's any of the 3 LB's RB, FB. Reed could not do that although he is obvousily an all timer at FS.
Kyle Wright to me was not as bad as people thought. Our teams in those days were somewhat overrated, OUr 5 star talent back then played like 1 stars, (youngblood) lol Wright had all the tools, had he had balls and no GF issue and studied like Dorsey then he could have been more productive for sure. Knee's is why he did not stick in teh NFL, his knee's were shot and he could not more anymore.
Posted by: Hassan | January 18, 2012 at 02:09 PM
UpNorth, here is one of the main reasons I say that also... No matter what game it was, he's playing ALL OUT. That's the type of competitor he was, and the type of guy I want at least 22 of on my team....

Sean Taylor was a once in a lifetime talent, I for one am thankful that I had the opportunity to see him play as well as know him personally. My all time favorite 'Cane, I still get upset to this day when I think of him. He was on his way to being the best Safety to EVER play the game.

Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | January 18, 2012 at 02:52 PM
Even then Willie Will - some guys shine immediately, others need more time & development to realize their "potential". The reality is there is no absolute truth. Some 5 star guys are going to home runs and some strike outs...same for 3 and 4 star guys. For every Peyton Manning ("cant miss" prospect), there's a Ryan Leaf (massive folly) and a Tony Romo (no fanfare, small college, spent 4 years learning position b4 starting but pretty good now).
The only truth is that coaches gotta be right more often than not or else your team will suk & they'll be fired. So lets hope AG gets some hits...

What about making an all time U swag all star team. Who would your 22 players be?... And their back ups. The majority of them are probably all pro as well. lol

For the star whores out there chew on this. As a college FB Coach if you Sign an avg of 22 players each year you are EXPECTED to "strike out" on 1/4 to be non factors and not even on your travel team/transfer/injury prone. The 5 stars are not immune to this, so if you sign a 5 star and he does not pan out what does he cost you? 1 scholly yup the exact same that your 4th string WR Cost you. However looking at the NFL, Multiple people get paid Millions+ by organizations to scout and evaluate talent and his determines entire organizations future and they still strike out just as much. Despite having more resources to take only 7 guys each year instead of 22, despite having 3 years of good film instead of grainy youtube highlight reels and despite having not only their own evals but also free evals of guys like Mel Kiper there are still teams Picking the Jamarcus Russell's of the world and setting back their entire organization YEARS by that. At least in college the most it can cost you is roster space, not salary cap season ticket etc...

Our Secondary next year
Boundary CB Mcgee- He has all the tools to be great, a former 4 star recruit and our fastest player in the roster. Has the size and speed you covet as this position just needs to put it all together in his senior year. Started last season all year and gained valuable experience, another year in the system will do wonders I believe and a more aggressive scheme with guys in the 2nd year knowing where to line up will allow him to play to his strengths.
CB Finnie- Another “Golden Gem” Former 3 star Enrolled last year as an EE, is fast and needs weight this offseason in UTough to really help his game, Played well in the run game last year but as with most freshman looked like a deer in the headlights most of the time. Towards the end of the year looked “less lost” and I think next year makes a big jump in his game.
Nickel CB Bush- The 4 star player will probably play a lot early, he is as talented as any we have and it will depend on how much he can handle as he will come in the summer.
FS Telemaque- Really disappointed in the next “Ed Reed” from Cali. This former 4 star has not been what he was billed as and I have heard from many that the work ethic is not there. As evident in his 225 max bench for a 205 lb man. He has one more year to ball out for the NFL Scout and have a chance, I think this year he puts together enough to get a look by the NFLU Scouts and plays at a 2nd team all conference level.
SS Armstrong- This Former 5 star player has talent to make the NFL Scouts drool but he just makes me mad. I throw the remote too much watching Ray Ray peak at the QB too much and allow WR’s past his position. He needs to play with more Discipline. I think Bill Parcell’s said it best “ He is about a 1 Biscuit away from being a LB”. He needs to work hard in UTough to keep his weight down and agility up, study film and be ready to this year to be in position to help this team and be a leader and quit making stupid decision off the field too.
There you have it these 5 projected starters avg 192 lbs and 6’.05 Tall. This is a big hard hitting Secondary, plenty of speed on the outside and play making and run stopping on the inside. The projected starters have a lot of experience at 3 positions and avg about 1.5 years of starting experience. The avg of the 5 positons is 4.00 stars for you star whores.

Mcgahee to the Probowl, 5 PB'ers

Hassan, U forgot about Dallas Crawford. He'll be in the secondary.
Speaking of him...
Dallas Crawford is trying to get into Med School eventually. Wow, didn't know the kid had the smarts to go along with the skill he possesses. I'm impressed.
Just now he said "Just got done with one of my kinesiology classes got one more to go. Future med student. Hopefully"

I just listed my starters, I would put him at backup FS, he is a play Maker, I am told he was so good at preparing the scout team playing QB, had he actually played for them we would have lost lol. I do not think Crawford has the raw speed to play CB, he has had trouble with his weight

I saw TB3 is working out with Chris Carter

First, on Twitter it was said today that Hoilett will enroll EE on Monday so he is #8 of the EE's. the 9th should be one of either Lockhart, Davis or Hope
Second, AJ Leggett was NEVER going to get in as a full qualifier to a D-1 school. He is going to Marshall as a non-qualifier and likely will have to sit out his frosh year. Beyond that even if he was qualified Miami moved on as there were rumors of him associating with someone tied to the person whose name must never be spoken (rhymes with shamzero).
Third my gut says we land 2-3 more for this class bringing us to 32-33 kids and a top 5 ranking.
Not too shabby Corch Al

AJ was shaky from the start, no big loss

When you got offers from EVERY top program in the nation...and you go to Marshall, that tells you all you need to know about the kid. Not saying a bad kid, but something is fishy lol

Is it college baseball season yet?
Posted by: MattInNY | January 18, 2012 at 03:45 PM
Leggett is a qualifier, not sure where you get your info from. I never saw his transcripts but he has a 22 ACT and hsi grades were enough, the fact that he was a Free Agent HS player who transferred to 4 different HS's and has ties to Agent's runner's is why we did not sniff him.

Stars do make you excited though, whether they turn out or not. You bring in Jo Smo from PoDunk High School who is a 2 star and everyone is going who is he but you Bring In Bobby Slobberknocker, who is a 5 star and I guarantee, everyone will go YES!

Lol, Rob Lowe is on twitter claiming Peyton Manning will retire today!! Hilarious

Matt Porter - Palm Beach Gardens OL Avery Young will announce his commitment at 2 pm Feb. 1 at PBGHS. ESPN cameras will be there.

Hassan, he went to 4 HS's in 4 years, he wasn't getting thru the clearinghouse. If he could he'd be going to FSU. His tie to the "agent" as you say is what I said above in different words.
Posted by: Strauzer | January 18, 2012 at 03:56 PM
You will see if he is a real "qualifier" or not if he doesnt play or practice his freshman year.
Per the NCAA
If you fail to meet eligibility and standardized tests score requirements, you will be ruled a nonqualifier. These athletes may enroll at a school but must sit out their entire freshman year— without participating in practice and games or receiving any athletic-based financial aid. To gain eligibility, you must earn 24 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 in your freshman year. "

Typepad is in rare form today, I will type this over again....
Stauzer I am not an expert in this or this kid in particular but my two cents on this are this
UM Admissions had evaluated him and was not going to let him in based on the transfer issue, eluding to it being related to transcripts.
As far as Grades and Test Scores he is a full qualifier but each school will look at the transcripts/tranfser issue differently as it is not regulated as hard as a more typical grade/test score issue.
