Your Miami Hurricanes beat the Clemson Tigers at the BankUnited Center on a beautiful South Florida Winter evening in lovely Coral Gables on Wednesday night by the score of 76-73.
It was the conference home opener for Miami, a team that really needed a big win after posting an 0-2 road record in the ACC early this season.
A balanced scoring attack propelled the 'Canes to victory over a stubborn and tenacious Clemson squad that trailed most of the game but refused to quit.
Malcolm "General" Grant led the Canes by scoring 16 points and made the game-clinching interception with less than 5 seconds left Wednesday to help the Hurricanes beat the Tigers.
But it was UM freshman Shane "Son Of A Barry" Larkin sank both ends of a one-and-one for the game's final points with 5.4 seconds to go to seal the deal for Miami.
Miami (10-6, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) won for the first time in six games against Clemson since February 2008. The Tigers (9-9, 1-3) are on the verge of falling below .500 for the first time this season.
The dependable Kenny Kadji added 14 points for the Hurricanes. Their point total was a season high against Clemson, who came into the contest ranked 19th in the nation in scoring defense at 58.6 points per game.
UM head coach Jim Larranaga had this to say about Miami's big home win:
UM players Trey McKinney-Jones and Malcolm Grant were interviewed after the game at the post game presser with the media and had these comments:
.
Dwayne Holiett should be EE at UM around Monday or Tuesday, acccording to some reports. That's why UM hasn't announced it. He's not there yet.

Monte, I agree with you that this was HUGE. People often fail to realize how much an outstanding catcher can influence a game and improve a pitching staff. Having a catcher that has strong D skills, and can hit, separates teams from the pack in college ball.
Not ready for any proclamations for this team yet, but I am anxious to see how the new staff impacts performance. I hope, as usual, that we ramp up aggression on the bases, and clean up the sloppy D. Otherwise, I kind of like this group.
Definitely ready for some baseball.

Wasn't that like the same thing he said about Gray Crow? Some other coach was recruiting Gray and that coach has a good eye for QB's so...

Papa Cane - Recruiting Update: LB Darius White, 6'1'' and 230 lbs, from Manatee HS has been offered by Coach Golden & staff. Video: http://ow.ly/8AqPi
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 20, 2012 at 09:56 AM
White, is a 3 star and Six should have intell on him he is from his area. I know the kids our of Manatee are well coached esp on defense. this is a big kid 6'1 and 230.
The 2013 kid we just offered Garrett Sikels he looks pretty good. He is a NJ kid and is big 6'4 225 as a HS Junior, We def are getting kids who acn play 3/4 and multiple in the defense we employ.
About the Pasco kid Guy, I know Six loves him and he might be a hidden gem but I think Six needs better scouting eyes lol. I got to love six but I checked this kid out more and he was at FSU's camp throwign for their OC and he passed on him and did not get an offer, nro does he have an offer from SFLA and his BROTHER players TE there. The kids offer sheet is pretty crappy Western michigan is not a power house so I am thinking although the kid may not be bad why does NO ONE in fla recruit him?

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 20, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I look at QB's this way, If you look at most of the starting Qb's in the NFL, they didn't come from some of the top programs. Especially the back-ups, are from a lot of mid-majors conferences. There are a dime a dozen High School kids that have gaudy numbers, mainly because of the talent they face or the system they run. Our problem with Qb's is we can't keep coordinators here long enough to develop these kids. Boise State don't have a problem developing no name QB's. We can't keep getting Frank Costa type QB's, while they are a little above average, they're not going to get you to the top. Let's face it, it's a crap shoot, when you bring in any High School kid. it's up to the Head Honcho's to develop these guys and don't put them on the field to early, which is another problem we've had, is lack of depth at that positon, so we can't redshirt anyone. Crow may not have impressive numbers but it shouldn't take Goldie but 2 years to figure out if he will be a savior, career back-up or let him transfer out.
I'm glad Goldie found this Lb White. I hope it's not to late because will need someone to replace Northrup, unless Barrow really made an impression on him yesterday.

Papa Cane - Visiting This Weekend: 4-Star OL Avery Young, 6'6'' and 275 lbs, from Palm Beach Gardens. Close friends with Angelo Jean Louis. 60% chance.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 20, 2012 at 12:29 PM
UpNorth, actually no. That was just a general statement RE: how Golden handles recruiting.
How it use to be: Shannon would get X amount of commits. He would bank on X amount of players coming in. We would lose Y amount of recruits to other schools and there was no back-up plan.
How it is now: Golden gets X amount of commits. He banks on X amount of players coming in. HOWEVER, just in case we lose Y amount of players, there is Z amount waiting as back-ups JUST IN CASE something goes wrong (Grades fall short, defects to another school, etc.). THEN, JUST IN CASE something goes wrong with those back-up recruits, he has MORE back-up recruits to fill in for them.
It's how it SHOULD be done, but hasn't in the recent past.

Ohio..I do wonder though, the back ups to the back ups..are those wasted schollies or do we have to use them anyway?
Posted by: UMike | January 20, 2012 at 12:54 PM
They're not wasted schollies, as far as I know. I don't know exactly how it works, but I can't see any scenario where Golden would waste a scholarship.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 20, 2012 at 12:57 PM
I dont think a plan C player is a wasted schollie in the sense that Golden isn't just gonna pick up a player just to pick one up to fill up the roster. His plan C players may be more of a work in progess than say a Plan A that can come in and contribute right away. But the end result after 4 years would be the same. At least thats how I believe Golden is looking at it.
Oh and I heart golden as well.

I am not going to put my nose up at any 3 star LB, look at Perryman.
Also the kid is from Manatee and they play good ball there adn he is 6'1 and 230 so he could help right away.

Florida State started their rebuilding process 2 years before we did. The media hype of last year ranking them #5 makes potential recruits believe they are on the brink of national prominence. Lastly they don't have to deal with NCAA sanctions like we do. Right now we have so many things working against us in terms of recruting its a miracle that we are ranked top 10. It shows how great a recruiter Golden. Imagine Muschamp and other coaches are sitting in your living room telling you that Miami is gonna get the death penalty or sanctioned severely. When you hear it from various coaches then it makes it difficult for Golden to convince these kids, that its simply not the case. We have had a mountian of a road block over the last year and half between coaching changes to the scandal, this program has taken its lumps. Once we get the punishment which I still believe will be light, then we can finally move on as well as once the new players Golden brings in get on campus.
Again for the record, Jimbo will be on the hot seat this time next year and Muschamp will have one more year before being fired. Book it.

Mephis what up my man! Been a while.
I still have my questions about this team with regards to the hitting and defense. The pitching is going to be one of best rotations in the nation. But it all comes down to if they can hit and pick the ball up. The lack of power and shoddy defense the past 2 years has been downright paththetic. And for lack of power, no one better get in to that was the bats and the change this year. That is a downright weak excuse.

Darius White played the entire playoffs this year with a torn labrum in his shoulder, kid is going to have surgery in Feb. 6’1 23o lbs already. They beat Jax First Coast 40-0 to win the state title this year
Manatee is a good program, real good football - state runner ups and state semi-finals a whole lot of times. Ace Sanders came from there .. some kid named Tommie Frazier came from there .. a former Miami Hurricane OLineman named Mike Moore came from there .., so for Golden to start invading that territory and pulling kids from there is a good thing
Kid has been starting since he was a Frosh, led the team in tackles basically every year since he’s started. Had 137 tackles as a Soph. Kid was real nice against Don Bosco Prep early this year. They beat up on Venice in the playoffs, beat up on Dwyer as well
Posted by: Six | January 20, 2012 at 08:03 PM
Hassan - ya, I've got a man crush on Guy over Gray Crow definitely. If you're going to pull a kid that supposedly can throw it, then take the kid that broke county records in a tougher district. Pasco was 1 game away from playing in the state title but lost in triple overtime to Wakulla

Ratings suck, Potential don't mean squat. But I will say again. these basketball players deserve your support. These guys play hard. They may not win but they give a great effort. This is a very good team. Give them the same chance you would give 17 year olds out of high school.

Hi all, don't have as much time to blog as I wish but I have been reading from time to time. Thought I'd throw out what I've been hearing/reading..
Tracy Howard - About a month ago he was rumored to be a lock for the Gators. Now we aren't hearing those rumblings. On one hand he has mentioned how he has wanted to leave the Miami area. On the other hand he's mentioned how he wants to make a big surprise on signing day. Also he said something like "I don't want to go where some team wants me, I want to go where a team needs me". The Tracy Howard camp has been pretty quiet so I don't know exactly how to read into it, just take it all with a grain of salt I guess. O and BTW his mom is borderline making his recruitment a circus, parents need to not use their kids to get into the spotlight.
Eddie Goldman - Supposedly we have a silent commit? If we do my guess goes to Goldman. His finalists are FSU,Bama,Auburn,Clemson,Miami. Bama supposedly has no more room, however I'm thinking they would try to find room for Goldman if he committed. FSU if I remember correctly has plenty of DTs. Clemson just hired a new DC and I think its too late in the game for Clemson to make a move (If clemson gets him, def something dirty going on there). That leaves Auburn and Miami. He loves Coral Gables, loves the schools, I'm sure he likes the coaches otherwise we wouldn't have been in it this long. And once again immediate playing time would be staring him in the face when he steps on campus.
These 2 are the biggest needs right now but like Ohio has said, Golden has backups ready. I think Golden is going to try and fill every scholarship he has because we could get hit with a redux next recruiting cycle
Posted by: DrewZ2 | January 21, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Bottom line: We are better off with an experienced Buchannon than without him. He's inconsistent, misses tackles and assignments, but he still makes plays when he figures things out. And just look at that depth chart and tell me who you would rather see, for all 65 or so plays out there than him? Maybe one of the younger guys takes his starting position but he will play valuable mintues, and this is his second year in D'Onofrio's system, so he should improve.

Jon Bastian - 9 UM players competing in the Battle of Florida today: Lee Chambers, Joel Figueroa, Harland Gunn, Chris Ivory, JoJo Nicolas, Adewale Ojomo, Micanor Regis and Mike Williams.
