When we first thought about what the University of Miami football team and second year head coach Al Golden needed in the critical 2012 recruiting class the term first came to mind.
Then when we met UM offensive line coach Art Kehoe at the FHSAA championship game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando a few weeks ago he used the term to describe this year's haul of high school players.
When we watched the U.S. Army All-Star Game yesterday and all of the highly talented high school football recruits commit to Miami we thought about the term once again.
The term that will be used for the 2012 UM class is: "The Mother Load".
That is exactly what the University of Miami football team and talented coaching staff are getting this year in Coral Gables. The latest star-studded names to join the 2012 recruiting class at Miami are:
DB Deon Bush
DL Tyriq McCord
WR Robert Lockhart
These players are only part of what we will come to know as "The Mother Load" when people refer to the 2012 class of Miami Hurricanes.
So stay seated and do not get your knickers all in a wad UM fans, the 2012 recruiting class is just going to get better and better by the minute.
Trust me on this!

Lockhart is a stud.
We need to quit stressin who has inside info and who does not. just be happy to have ANY info lol made up or not, we have 9 months til we see them play and we need to be entertained. Other sites have just that "cane entertainment" and they charge for their "inside info" like Brown to UM and whatnot lol
His HS coach TOLD me his is not coming to UM. there are people with legit inside info but if we keep attacking people and whatnot that info will disappear. there are only a FEW guys not employed by UM that have access and get this info out, lets not ruin it by outing them or worrying how they get it.
Posted by: hassan | January 07, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Agree, hassan. We just need to enjoy this haul, this is reminiscent of another big class we brought in around 1998.

Posted by: raizecane | January 08, 2012 at 12:50 AM
raize, that's a trick question as the NCAA will only count the ones who enroll in the fall and early in 2013 as "this year." So by that definition, the full 25 is my guess. Now how many will actually join the team in 2012? 28-31 maybe?

Has anyone heard the rumor that Randy is to be DC at Tennessee and he is taking Barrow with him?
Posted by: Texascane | January 08, 2012 at 01:31 AM
Nothing like those heralded recruiting classes...
"In late November, Florida lost two more players from its highly touted 2010 recruiting class. Josh Shaw and Lynden Trail became the eighth and ninth players to transfer from the program from that class, one that came in with high expectations.
Ronald Powell was the top overall recruit in the country in 2010 but has failed to live up to expectations so far at Florida.
The departures have certainly diminished the impact of a class that ranked No. 1 in Scout.com and ESPN’s rankings and No. 2 by Rivals.com. In all, Florida has lost 10 players from that class – one was dismissed by Urban Meyer last year, two more left the program before the start of their freshman season and seven more have transferred since Will Muschamp was hired to replace Meyer." Tex I keep seeing that Randy is gonna be the Defensive CO at Tennessee. I have not heard anything about Coach Barrow. I like Barrow and I dont think his ties to Randy would have him leave Miami...would be a shame though. We have young linebackers and the special teams with the guide of him and Coach Golden played very well this year...
I love the committed kids Miami has Not all about stars and being highly rated. These kids have heart and want to be apart of what Coach Golden is building ! Cant wait for Feb!

It's been a pretty special 24-hour span for the University of Miami's football recruiting efforts.
The Hurricanes, who lost a handful of key underclassmen last month who announced their intentions to enter the NFL Draft early, picked up four commitments including two U.S. Army All-Americans on Saturday -- Miami Columbus safety Deon Bush and Tampa Jefferson defensive end Tyriq McCord.
Bush (6-1, 185) is ranked as a consensus top five safety in the country by ESPN and Rivals.com and picked UM over Alabama and Auburn. McCord (6-3, 222), ranked 7th by Rivals at weakside end and 13th nationally at his position by ESPN, chose UM over South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

To add to OGV's point, I say when it's all said and done, this class ends up being around 32 kids total. EE included

Rivals updated their rankings (post-U.S. Army Game) and moved the Canes up to #6, past FSU who sits currently at #9.
This is a really good class, with a good mixture of talent. I have seen a lot of these recruits play in person or on TV, and I have been very impressed. They all can play or have good upside potential. The recruits also indicate that the Canes will continue to run a pro-style offense as they did this year. It also appears they will transition to the 3-4 on defense. the depth chart competition will be interesting in the spring and next fall. The Canes may surprise some people in the ACC.
I also think there could be a few more surprises before or on NSD.

Golden is starting to set precedent for his ability to close. I'd have to believe, based on the awesome teaser-trailer comments from 86 and crew... that there's a nice little surprise coming.
Few questions:
1. Who's the jester/comedian of the current squad (not counting the 2012's)?
2. Does Henderson become the LT?
3. Reports are that Al Golden's tie fights crime. Any updates?
(A snarky recruiting remark would be welcome.)
4. Who, if anyone, pushes Walford for the TE spot?
5. Do they plan to run the "Raising Canes" documentaries indefinitely (or does the 3 Penny Film contract run out at the end of the year)?

I have heard that 33 is our target number- 8 enrolling early that count against last year's total, and the remaining 25 for this year's class. Not sure how accurate this is, I thought, based on the numbers we have, that 31 was the maximum number.

2. Yes. With (IMO) Flowers at RT
3. Golden's tie does indeed fight crime. It's the secret piece of apparel under Batman and Superman's costume. He lent it to them. They wouldn't dare try to steal it.
4. Asante Cleveland
5. Last I heard, the Raising Canes will continue.

Uh-Oh SOUP, looks like Moss may be headed to Oakland:
"The Dolphins have announced their interivew with Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin has concluded this Saturday afternoon.
Great.
I'm wondering if they interviewed the best Green Bay assistant?
The fact of the matter is many NFL people I speak with tell me the biggest budding star in the Green Bay Packers coaching staff is assistant head coach Winston Moss. Yes, Joe Philbin is considered to be a very good coach. He is a solid X and O guy and he has no problem communicating with most of his players.
But those same people tell me Moss commands a room when he walks into it. Those people tell me when Moss speaks, everyone listens. They tell me Moss will be a head coach in the NFL and if he gets into the right situation, he will be a bigtime winner because he knows football, knows how to pick good people, and is a natural leader.
And so again, I ask, are the Dolphins interviewing the right Green Bay assistant?
I know this: The Oakland Raiders are becoming the Green Bay Packers of the west. They've asked former Packers general manager Ron Wolf his opinion on all things from hiring a general manager to hiring a head coach. No, Wolf is not oficially working for Oakland but his words are resonating.
So it comes as no surprise the Raiders hired former Green Bay director of football operation Reggie McKenzie on January 5. McKenzie has the power to fire and hire head coaches. And, again, people I'm speaking with tell me McKenzie is seriously considering firing head coach Hue Jackson.
And if that happens, McKenzie will ask for permission to interview, you guessed it, Winston Moss."

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 08, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Respectfully disagree
What has he done to be penciled in as the starter? Looking at his body of work I see nothing more then a undersize self-entitled player with no play-making ability and Golden shouldn't appoint him as a team leader with brush with the law.
Posted by: SinisterCane | January 08, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Sinister,
If you can recall, Golden did give Buchanan his approval before the season even started. He was starting, and I didn't hear anything negative about him based on the comments given to the press before and during the season after the legalities were finalized.
He's not exactly a proven entity, but he's also not a freshman. We have Perryman as one LB. Who are the other two/three? Buchanan's just a good a name as any (Cain, Gaines, Paul) with experience and speed to boot. With the loss of Spence, it cannot be a bad thing to pencil in someone given a nod by Golden with a year of experience in the defensive system.
I'm not defending his idiotic lack of judgment.
I'd much rather Buchanan start at LB over Armstrong in the secondary.
Posted by: LB | January 08, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Another question:
Which of the 2011 class who didn't see significant action looks to have developed the best?
Posted by: LB | January 08, 2012 at 01:00 PM
LB...I'm OK with Buchanan at LB also. I think he has the skills and experience we will need at LB in 2012.
My selection for starting MLB is Gionni Paul IF he can get the playbook and pass coverage down. Word is he is a weight room junkie and is getting bigger and stronger this offseason and is a run game stuffer.
He may play on first and second down and be pulled on third down or second and long next year until he can become a complete player.

These are our EE's we should be able to get at least 8-9 of these. Northrup may not even be in this class and he def wont be an EE. We need Northrup IMO. I think our depth chart will look good there soon. if we get 9 EE's our class will be 34 so we have 4 slots left minus our one Silent, So 3 spots left saving for big time players. We will end up a top 5 class.

Well they are silent for a reason but smart money is on Omari Phillips a 4 star DT who is committed to the Gayturds but grew up a Canes fan.
Speaking of those who wear JORTS up north they have lost 10 recruits from their top ranked recruiting class of 2010 already. including 7 tranfers. The team was 6-6 and top Brass at UF are already looking to an exit strategy with him. The luster has worn off that hire already meanwhile we are making headway into long time Gator country of central fla and the treasure coast. The future looks bright with our recruiting.
Did anyone see the pic with Golden and Dewey. Dewey is listed most often at 6'3 but there is no way. I am 99% for sure AL Golden is 6'3 Dewey looks to be 6'1 to me.

Soup, I read The Five Dysfunctions of a Team last monday in Alabama.
My book report is this:
I think Kathryn is HOT!!!
Mikey reminds me of a former Canespace blogger who I envision was always rolling their eyes.
The pyramid of dysfunction makes total sense as I have seen status and ego,low standards, ambiguity, artificial harmony, and invulnerability in a working business environment.
Its much easier to pussyfoot around problems than facing them head on and solving them through confrontation.
Its also hard to trust teammates when there is a history of failure.
You must set goals and be committed to them.
All team players must be accountable for their actions and held to standards through peer pressure.
Results matter and attention to them must be duly made.
Go Canes!!!

Who else thinks Ponder is a stud in his few games this year? A year of UTough and pratcice he can collapse the middle. Our D should be much better next year.

8 EE's will certainly help, especially the three corners...
...and a silent commit. That's excellent.
Thanks for the information about Paul and Crawford.
Also, I browsed some other sites. If McCord holds, I note there's an end from Tampa named Sherit for 2013. That would be 3 in a row for DE from Tampa. Curious.
QB's the key, though. Ryan Williams, baby!

It's widely know Tebow's favorite quote from the bible is John 3:16. Well JOHN elway told him to pull the trigger, then he throws for 316 yards vs Pittsburgh in their win, AND averaged 31.6 yards per throw.
Wow. Odd.

At QB in 2012 I want whoever Fisch wants whether it be Williams or MoMo or Dewey.
My early favorite is Williams but I just wanna WIN baby!

I have loved the last week of articles and how folks on this space have been providing/updating info. as it has become available. Forgive me for sounding slightly petty, but my old high school yearbook editing days get me upset seeing a very nice article referring to the mother "load" several times, when this is a rather disgusting image vs. the mother "lode." :(
More and more it's becoming obvious to all how much of a business college sports is, especially football and basketball. Big money, not about student athletes, winning makes money and gets bigger donations, etc. It's always been this way, but the extent of it was always kept under better wraps. There are things going on to some degree at almost every program and always have been.
That being said, I still can't get past my love of the Canes and am pleased to see Golden clearly doing a better job of what has been necessary, but not done, with recruiting over the last decade. All that is left to see is not only if the highly-rated guys come through but if there a few diamonds in the rough. If so, look out over the next 2-5 years.
Happy new year to all, and thanks for your ongoing efforts, Soup.

Wait do I have this correct? 4 Star CB Draby commits to ND at the UAAA game on 1/5 and then goes to visit Clemson this weekend and de-commits from the Irish overnight on 1/8?

And they go to a nowhere neck of the woods in Oregon for the laughably stupid uniforms instead of because of having had money sent to their middleman in Texas before transferring also SOUP. You didn't catch that part too, you homer?
Mother load, mother lode, UM could use them both on signing day this year, but that is a funny catch J.

Uh, raize, did that profile pic of yours get taken at Duffy's in Plantation? Because if it is I'm going to have to ask my friend who works there to, uh, get me a preferred seating arrangement and come up with an excuse to go to see Wrestlemania at Sun Life after enjoying a few drinks on the patio.

Thanks for the updates, guys, took my little one to see a basbketball game and missed the Broncos-Steelers game, but by my count, NFL teams with more Canes on their rosters are 4-0.

SS
The Hurricanes received an oral commitment from Miami Columbus' Deon Bush on Saturday during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. It is important for a number of reasons.
Most notably, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound four-star prospect gives them the big-time defensive back they badly needed. Bush, whose other finalists were Alabama and Auburn, has 4.4 speed in the 40 and the ability to play immediately as a true freshman.
His commitment also shows that Coach Al Golden can win recruiting battles against top-notch SEC schools for elite players, and it's an encouraging endorsement for a program that had to worry what impact the Nevin Shapiro scandal would have in building its team.
The oral commitment of Tampa Jefferson defensive end Tyriq McCord, also at the all-star game, is significant assuming McCord doesn't switch. He still plans to visit Southern California and TCU, who he considered along with South Carolina and Georgia, later this month.
UM's recruiting class was ranked 11th nationally by Rivals.com and ESPN.com prior to the pick-ups of Bush, McCord and Lafayette [La.] Carnecro's Jacoby Briscoe, though, it lacked much star power aside from Miami Norland's Duke Johnson and Miramar's Malcolm Lewis.
Quick hits
•Can LB Sean Spence make a major impact at the Senior Bowl on Jan. 21 in Mobile, Ala.? Spence's former UM teammates WR Leonard Hankerson and LB Colin McCarthy both raised their NFL Draft stock during Senior Bowl week last year.

BLASPHEMY! But, it looks like a yes on that.
ESPN is going to be in COMPLETE meltdown mode ALL week over Tebow.
Chris Whyttingham from WVUM reported on Twitter that he heard one of the ESPN top executives ordered they switch to "DEFCON 5" immdeiately after the Tebow threw the long TD pass for the win over the Steelers.
Speaking of Steelers, has anyone seen or heard from our own "Canesteeler" after yesterday's loss to Tebow and the Broncos?

I just requested a vacation day for February 1st so that I can devote my entire day to posting all recruits that end up signing!
CAN'T WAIT!
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 09, 2012 at 09:44 AM
I am making a personal commit to NEVER EVER, EVER, EVER root for teabag.
GO CANES!!!
Posted by: IraqiCane | January 09, 2012 at 09:48 AM
Tea bag cannot succeed in a pro offense. But he has physical qualities as an option qb that are one of a kind. He has great feet and real NFL quickness. But his throwing motion is below average. He needs his receivers to be really above average NFL receivers because he cant stick the ball in between two defenders on a regular basis.
The best way to play him is to spread the field and do not bull rush but allow him to have time to pass. Play pass defense and force him to throw into coverage. No big plays.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | January 09, 2012 at 09:55 AM
Pitts d ends were most of the game out of position... the NFL teams to not see the option and are not schooled in it yet.It only get harder to move the ball next year. Once they figure it out.
