This is the second part of our two-part interview with Jeremy Herring, MS, CSCS, the owner and head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Power Sports Academy in Davie, Florida.
Herring's philosophy has been developed over 10 years of extensive research and also throughout his lifetime obsession with strength. He earned a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology from FIU , is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Certified USA Track and Field Coach and a club level USA Weightlifting Coach.
He is also the American Powerlifting Association State record holder with a 585 pound bench press and was named the 2001 South Florida Strongest Man in the heavyweight division.
His philosophy is a simple one: "Train hard, train smart, and put the body under greater stress in training than it could ever face in competition. Competitions should be fun, the training up to the competition is where the work is done."
In this part of the interview Jeremy covers more ground on several different areas of a professional and successful S&C program.
Q: Diet and nutrition play an important role in the physical development and conditioning of athletes. Can you give us some more specific details of how a strength and conditioning coach could build diet and nutrition program and incorporate the use of nutritional and/or body building supplements that could be designed or tailored to specific athletes at different positions in football? Are the any specific dietary requirements (e.g. grams of protein) or restrictions (e.g. grams of fat or sodium) that would be part of that program?
A: Yes, we give nutritional guidance to all of our athletes. We don't go crazy counting calories or weighing our food, by any means. But when working with large groups with varying needs, we have some basic guidelines. We try to get .5g - 1g of protein per pound of body weight. We also try to limit sodium to less than 1000mg per day. During the season we suggest no added salt to any meals.
Our leaner athletes looking to gain weight, we suggest only 3 large meals, made of quality protein, at least 1 cup of a starch, and 2 servings of fruit or vegetables. We also suggest a high calorie protein based weight gainer, to follow each meal. So that's 3 shakes and 3 meals. These should be
consumed at the same time as to not further speed up an already fast metabolism.
For our bigger athletes looking to loose body fat we go with a low calorie protein shake only twice a day, and aim for 4-6 small meals made up of 1serving of lean protein and no starch. We try to get all of our carbohydrates from an unlimited supply of fruit and vegetables.
Q: What role does a strength and conditioning program play in the role of injury prevention? We often see shoulder, hamstring, ankle and knee injuries in football and the ever present "cramping". Can some injuries and more specifically cramping in general be prevented in athletes, and if so, how?
A: Yes, a huge role! A couple of specific things we do is we train the hamstrings hard all year. I haven't had one of my athletes pull a hamstring in 10 years. This is partly because we warm up thoroughly everyday, stress stretching and flexibility, but mainly because all of our athletes are freaking strong, especially in the hips and hamstrings.
Another thing we do is we train hard in-season. Lifting cannot be priority number 1 in-season, but we take care of that by programming short, dense, intense sessions in-season. Exercise selection is huge. We pick big movements, to get the most bang for our buck, then 1 or 2 accessory exercises, then we send them home. It’s easier to get a guy to lift hard in-season when he knows he isn't looking at a marathon session.
Also with exercise selection, we pick exercises that aren't going to aggravate already irritated areas. For example, we never straight bar squat in-season, ever. We use a safety squat bar. This takes a ton of stress off the shoulders, as they don't have to reach back and hold the bar. We also never do cleans or front squats in-season. Also because of the abuse the shoulders already take on the field. I think these things play just as big a role in preventing injury as the preventative exercise we prescribe.
But that being said, we use band traction for the shoulders and elbows twice a week in-season, strengthen the rotator cuff through a variety of exercises during our upper body warm-up, and use broom stick stretching. For the back and lower body, warm-up, stretching, foam rolling, maximal strength exercise, and many other preventative exercises reduce the likely hood of injury in the hamstrings, knees, and ankles.
Cramping should never occur with a fit player. The only time I can understand a player cramping is if they had an off-season injury that prevented them from properly preparing themselves for the season. A healthy player, following the same hydration requirements and dietary guidelines as everyone else shouldn't cramp. Ever. Period.
Q: I saw on your web site that you worked with current UM OL Jon Feliciano before he arrived at Miami. What can you tell us about Jon and how your work with him may have helped him see some serious playing time as a true freshman at UM in 2011?
A: Early on I realized that Jon was very athletic for his size. But he was weak. We started off addressing proper technique in the bench, squat, and dead-lift. He really liked dead-lifting and got pretty strong at them pretty fast. His squat lagged behind, but he was a deep squatter naturally, which I was pleased with, especially for a fairly tall guy. I continued to hammer him on his technique on all our big lifts and his pulling strength transferred into an elite high school power clean. By his junior year he was STRONG!!! He would run D-lineman off the screen on game films.
He continued to work with his position coach on his on field technique, which was at a high level by this time as well. Jon was also on the basketball team, which replaced most of his conditioning in the winter and early spring. Jon had a great summer going into his senior year. He showed up in great shape, sharp technique, and super strong. He was a dominate player that year.
Then he was off to The University of Miami. After a red shirt year, he sent me a text and told me he was going to start at right tackle against Ohio State. I was very excited for him and proud of him. He had worked very hard for this. The first offensive play was a run off tackle to Jon's side. Jon pancaked his man, and dominated all game.
All season long Jon impressed me most by never looking like a redshirt freshman. He looked and played stronger than all his opponents. I like to think my relationship with him had something to do with that. But I know his development is far from over, he will continue to improve every year.
Q: Tell us more about Power Sports Academy and what you do there that helps athletes in various sports prepare for their events? Are there any specific theories or philosophies that you follow in your work as a strength and conditioning coach?
A: To be blunt, we try to avoid the gimmicks and concentrate on tried and true training. We train hard, but more importantly we train smart. People come to us in pretty bad shape sometimes, and while there is always a time frame we emphasize that it cannot happen in one session. When people try to over do it, we must step in and keep them healthy. Otherwise they push to hard to soon and then we won't see them for a week or two.
Sports specific training has gone too far, people spend too much time trying to mimic their sport with weights attached to them. Instead they should focus on building true strength in areas important for their sport/position/event and develop fitness according to the energy system their sport falls under. That is what we do.
People always ask about speed training and camps, but we push them towards our strength and conditioning program. Like I said before, it concentrates on running/sprint mechanics, strength development, explosive power and endurance, mobility, flexibility, agility, and speed training each and every workout.
We all have been running our whole lives, running only makes you so fast. Louie Simmons calls it "The Speed Barrier". At some point you have to increase horse power. You do that in the gym.
Q: What type of specific services and supports do you provide to athletes at Power Sports Academy?
A: We offer professional strength and conditioning. We are experts in this area. We try to focus on our expertise.
If you are an athlete living in South Florida and want to reach your true potential then contact Jeremy Herring, MS, CSCS, at: www.PowerSports-Academy.com or 954-829-4144.

A little off-topic, but I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show and I got to see a few 4K televisions, as well as Sharp's incredible 8K television (basically 8x the pixels of a 1080p screen). Put it this way - Miami's future dominance will be seen in quite enhanced detail in the years to come.

Canes leaving early...Big mistake$$$.....
“I was surprised,” Golden said of the exodus of four juniors and one sophomore. “Any young man that leaves our program and wants to pursue an NFL career, we’ll support him. But I was surprised at how quickly the decisions were made and that many of them signed [with agent] prior to getting any feedback from the NFL [Draft] Advisory Committee, which I had never seen before in my 17 years of coaching.”
The deadline for underclassmen to leave for the draft is Sunday, though Golden said he doesn’t expect any more departures.
The coach has little time to look back.
At this moment, it’s all recruiting all the time. Signing day for the 2012 class is Feb. 1. But at least seven new players are expected to enroll early for the spring semester that begins Monday, and participate in spring practice that starts March 3 and ends with the spring game April 14 at Sun Life Stadium. The early enrollees will count toward last year’s signing class.
Because so many of last year’s seniors and letter winners left, the loss of the five former starters especially hurts UM with scholarship numbers. The NCAA scholarship limit is 85, but Golden confirmed the Canes will be well under that number, considering at least 32 are gone from the 2011 roster.
The NCAA sets a limit of 25 new signees each year, regardless of a team’s total scholarship count.
“The student-athletes leaving early came at a disadvantageous time for us,” Golden said, “because our senior class was so big to begin with.”
............................................
I said it before an agent too close to the program wants to sign all the Canes with potential for the next level at any price with giving them bad advices. He is so eager to get them before any other agents that he will say anything. In his own way he is a Shapiro type of guy. Canes players please take your advices from your coach at least you can trust them at 100%, they want the best for you. As for the rat face agent you should stay away from his BS and make sure you get the best advices for your own pockets and future.

Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Monty...jusy FYI, I was told by Chris Freet that UM fans and supporters and boosters are not supposed to have direct contact with a recruit even via the Internet.
That means Facebook, Twitter or other mneans. I know it sounds stupid but it is what it is.
My question is this: How can the NCAA be so important or powerful that its rules supercede the U.S. Constitution? Doesn't a U.S. citizen who is not directly employed by an NCAA institution have First Amendment rights to free speech and choose who they want to talk to?
Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 10:09 AM
SOUP, next time you talk to "Skreetz", can you ask Him does Miami do "Mat Drills"?
Posted by: CaneRock | January 13, 2012 at 08:18 PM
Will do.
Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 10:16 AM
You do have the right to contact these recruits...but the NCAA has the right, as a private entity, to set up its rules with regard to punishment for what they deem infractions of their rules.
It is the same as going to work for a company and the company requring you not to speak with people at a rival company. You still have the First Amendment right to do it but the company can surely fire you for it.

I need everybody to do me a favor if U can. Please do not stay logged into Canespace for days or weeks at a time. Here is why:
1. When U stay logged in U do not know when a new blog posts and U keep posting on the old blog instead of the new one. Then some people miss your comments completely or you have to copy and paste your comments from the old blog to the new one and it complicates and duplicates the reading time for others.
2. It affects the number of "hits" we get per day which could impact future revenue opportunities to support Canespace.
3. I know it means a little more effort on your part but it would be GREATLY appreciated IF U would log in and then log out when you are done reading or commenting and then log back in when you are coming back to the blog.
THANK U!

From the previous blog...
I show the March 30th, UM Scrimmage at Bishop Verot HS in Ft. Myers as a 7:00pm start.
That's too bad about the NCAA's "25 NEW Signees" limit... I NEVER heard that before... bummer...
Posted by: roachcane77 | January 14, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Texas...the one BIG difference is that we are not WORKING for anyone! We are under no professional or contractual obligation to anyone.
We signed no formal employment agreement or contract to follow certain rules when we became a FAN of a sports team did we?
Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 10:24 AM
No, but the NCAA is allowed to set its own rule with regard to contacts, etc. While I disagree with many of the NCAA's rules, can you imagine trying to police "booster" contact vs "fan" contact with recruits?
While we are not considered employees, the member institutions and the recruits, at some point, are so designated. The NCAA cannot control what we do but they can certainly punish the players and schools. So, either way, they got the hammer...
Posted by: Texascane | January 14, 2012 at 10:35 AM
The NCAA has no jurisdiction over anyone who is not formally working for or attending an NCAA institution.
Those who work for or attend an NCAA institution signed an agreement to follow certain rules, FANS never signed on to that!
Do IBM employment policies apply to an employee at Ford Motor Company?
Do Catholic Church religious doctrines apply to atheists?
Do the policies of Communist China apply to citizens of Chile?
No of course NOT! None of those people ever agreed to those policies and never signed up for that.
Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Texas...name one other non-governmental entity that has the authority to formally apply penalties and sanctions against an institution for the actions of people who do not work for or attend that institution?
Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Easy Soup... I am not condoning it, just saying that they have the ability to do it. The NCAA has run itself this way for decades...the fact that if I want to help out the poor college kid down the street with some groceries...no problem...but he/she better not be an athlete on scholarship or I have ruined their career.
I ran into the situation many times while visiting my son and out to dinner...I would take several of his buddies with us and I knew that when I paid for dinner...as any Dad would...I might be violating NCAA rules...or when his Mom loaded his apartment with groceries a couple of times a year and he lived with a teammate who would eat some of the food...was that a violation?
As far as the Tweets and Facebook...I don't know how they would monitor that...maybe Freet was just trying to head off a problem before it happens...

“I hope so. I think I was pretty adamant after the [last] game. I thought we got pushed around by Virginia and Boston College up front,” Golden said. “I don’t think we’re as strong as we needed to be. I don’t think we’re as physical as we needed to be.
“Hopefully we’re a lot more stronger, a lot more physical. We’re trying to recruit that way — I can tell you that. We’re trying to become a more physically imposing team, most particularly on defense.”
— DE Anthony Chickillo said late in the season he wanted to add 20 to 25 pounds of muscle in the offseason, but Golden said Thursday the coaching staff doesn’t want Chickillo to bulk up too much and have no plans to move him inside to DT.

Happy Saturday, everyone. We had a nice poster of Frank Gore in the morning paper, great way to start the day. I still think New Orleans is going to be too much for SF today, but Frank is the equalizer. If he rushes for over 100, they win.
For those following Eric Armstead (local kid out here), he is visiting Bama today. Bama, Auburn, Cal, ND seem to be his top 4. Anyone who will take his brother as a transfer will get him, wish we had a shot at him.

"About the number of players UM has lost since its season finale against Boston College: “We lost 35 players. That’s going to be hard to replace. End of story. We’re trying to find the right guys who see the opportunity and value in that and want to make an impact at the University of Miami early."
If we lost 35 we should be able to sign 35? It is possible but doubtful he is talking about walkon's

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jeff Fisher has decided against joining the Dolphins
As of Thursday, the Dolphins had not asked for permission to speak to Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator and former University of Miami player and assistant coach Rob Chudzinski, who was booked for interviews in St. Louis and Tampa Bay. But he’s a possibility now for Miami.

Agree 100%. The only way to prevent NO from scoring is to keep them off the field. It is up to the SF OL and Frank Gore to do that. Otherwise NO CHANCE for the 49ers today.

Negative.
There is a 25 max per class limit plus we have 7 EEs = 32 total.
Then prolly 3 "preferred walk-ons" that fall under the rules Texas explained yesterday and then they can earn a full scholly for next year IF they perform well.

Texas...I wasn't coming at U, I was arguing about he NCAA's apparent jurisdiction over private citizens behavior and their authority to punish or sanction member institutions on something that is totally beyond their ability to control.

Posted by: UMike | January 14, 2012 at 01:54 PM
4-Real rumors need to be checked and facts are always better! From Gorten at the SS:
Golden said he expects UM's 2012 signing class to include about 30 players. The NCAA allows a maximum of 25 scholarship players per signing class.
However, UM will have at least seven recruits who enroll early at UM next week, Golden said, so some of those mid-year entrants can count toward UM's 2011 total.
"Just look at the numbers – we're going to have 50 of the 82 that are either first or second-year players," he said. "We're not recruiting kids right now to sit on the bench."
Posted by: SOUP | January 14, 2012 at 02:04 PM
Freet is just doing his job, standing in the ocean trying to hack the waves as they come to shore, it's futile, the NCAA can't police the internet and the 1st Amendment is more important than football eligibility anyway since I potentially couldn't laugh at Jason Fox saying he has no weaknesses online without it.
This was a really interesting interview 86, good stuff. I screwed my hamstrings/back/hip muscles up in 2003 and only recently finally started to put a lot of those old injuries behind me with a combination of some of these techniques so when I read this;
"For the back and lower body, warm-up, stretching, foam rolling, maximal strength exercise, and many other preventative exercises reduce the likely hood of injury in the hamstrings, knees, and ankles."
I was nodding along dutifully with Jeremy Herring while reading the screen. The foam rolling therapy is surprisingly effective as a massage substitute and much more cost effective.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go try and dunk a basketball for the first time in over a decade thanks to some of this information! But first, I'll close the tab with the blog on it, lol.

SOUP the last thing we want to do is get our Great University in trouble...To the contrary somehow, somewhere we want to help within the rules.
I think that UM will be on high alert now on. The latest suspension of Ray Ray for having dinner with a girl friend is just a good example. May be Chris Freet is correct that we cannot per NCAA rules contact recruits via Facebook or other social medias to wish them good luck and that we hope they pick the team we like.
If we go on the facebook of every top 250 recruits, you have fans all over writing messages to them in the same way. In this context i have never heard any sanctions or infractions imposed by the NCAA.
Once again we will do what is best for UM. If they tell us not to do it, we won't but this is beyond ridiculous.
Like you said SOUP...We signed no formal employment agreement or contract to follow certain rules when we became a FAN of a sports team did we?
That being said once again everyone in the UM athletic department knows where the panic button is and they want to be cleaner than clean after the Shapiro situation. I don't blame them i would probably do the same.

Direct TV and my local fox channel 7-Miami are in a pissing contest and the SF-Saints game is unavailable. Instead of watching the game I am watching a firefly marathon on Sci-Fye Ugh
Posted by: TJL | January 14, 2012 at 04:57 PM
You might as well go ahead and make that switch to DISH, DirecTV has turned to straight GARBAGE. It took those SOBs a whole month to hook up our service when we moved to our new place, and when they finally came, dude took FOREEEEEVER! to hook it up. But yeah, go ahead and make that switch man, DTV has some pretty good deals going on now...

I love me some Cane news.
As for the Draft Advisory Committee, I know some things (which shall remain confidential). However, it's just silly. It breaks precedent (at least with Golden) in a terrible way. Declaring for the draft on a whim is downright foolish.
The Tie's stranglehold becomes greater each day.
Submit, mediocrity! Kneel, ACC! For the Tie has come for you!
I think I need to take a break from screenwriting.
Happy Saturday.

On another note... was just checking the Miami Herald and they are still saying they don't have much info on the Ft. Myers Spring scrimmage... check this article out from the Ft. Myers News-Press from Dec. 16th.
http://www.news-press.com/article/20111217/SPORTS/312170020/Miami-Hurricanes-football-scrimmage-scheduled-Bishop-Verot
It looks like it "could possibly" be changing, (it DOES say no contracts had been signed at that point), but THIS is the article where I got my info.

Great day to be a Niner fan after a decade of depression....Watching their defense got me thinking that is probably the vision that Golden and D'No have for our. 3-4 Scheme (I know , 4-3 is tradition)that can put a tremendous amount of pressure with just 4...good cover corner and a ball hawking safety (Ed Reed type) patrolling the middle.
Now if only Golden and staff can sell that to these recruits

Per Jon Bastian, Davante Bourque committed to Tennessee
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 15, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Bastian's FREE article on Briscoe:
"Recent Miami commit Jacoby Briscoe is wasting little time getting to know his future coaches.
“Coach Franklin came by at 8 O’clock to my school,” said Briscoe. “He came by just to talk. It was more like a friendly conversation just to get to know each other more and build that relationship. He was telling me about how I will enjoy my official visit and asked me if I am ready to go. I told him I am ready to strap up now because I am ready for football. He said he is looking forward to seeing me on the visit and seeing me play.”
Briscoe, 6-foot-4 and 290, has a couple other official visits in mind, but isn’t 100 percent sure he will be going on them. The Lafayette (La.) Carencro athlete explained in more detail.
“I am not too sure about it yet,” he said about a possible visit to Texas A&M. “Mostly likely I am not going to visit them. Right now, I am not too sure. I told coach Franklin about taking a visit to Texas A&M and he said do what you feel is the right thing. Most likely I’m not. I’m not, because I don’t want to waste no one’s time. I am not going to de-commit from Miami.
“I was supposed to go to Minnesota on the 20th but I cancelled that one to go to Miami on the 20th. I have Louisiana Lafayette [official visit] was on the 28th, but I probably won’t go on that one either."

That was not an easy catch. He definitely put it behind him. Two years later and he is an all-pro tight end.

LEXINGTON, Ky.--The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up the first event of the indoor season tonight, leaving the Kentucky Invitational with two titles. Seniors Devon Hill and Tarika Williams won the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash, respectively to lead the Canes.
Hill, a returning All-American in the 60-meter hurdles, bested the field with a time of 7.80 to medal. Williams, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champion in the 200 meters, showed her speed and prowess on the short track, winning the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.30—a new personal best for the Kingston, Jamaica native.
“Our seniors showed great leadership today, said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “Tarika [Williams] was very impressive today; she opened up with a personal best and a win in the 60m. Our men’s hurdles had strong performances and I look for them to make big strides as the season progresses.”

2013 DT Keith Bryant committed to Miami today
Posted by: Caniak | January 15, 2012 at 03:03 PM
TJ Yate is a good QB, didn't think he was going to be any good. Looks like there is hope for Jacory after all
Posted by: Caniak | January 15, 2012 at 03:05 PM
As opposed to JH, Yates had a very good senior year to get him ready for yhe NFL.
Harris will never be a starter in the NFL unless the 3rd string QB goes down.

Kearse was a Auburn commit..nice to see us flip an SEC commit

UpNorth...as of right now Rivals does not have any stars or ranking for them, but here is some info I got from Rivals. Keith Bryant the DT from Delray Beach - Atlantic (I want to say the same high school as Orlando Franklin) is already a big boy at 6'2" and 292lbs as a jr. His only other offer to far was from Marshall. Here is a video on him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irW-szX4qBI .
Alex Collins is a local kid from South Plantation, and had an offer a month before jr day. He had offers from Ball State and Boston College. He is shifty with speed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6TUXHOFZEk
Kearse appears to be a SOLID pick up..he was an Auburn commit but had offers from Auburn, Clemson, Boston College, UNC, GT, SOuth Carolina, Tenn and others. Another Fort Myers kid.

Sota..I have no clue..he is listed as an Athlete on Rivals.
Posted by: UMike | January 15, 2012 at 09:01 PM
at 6'4" and 195lbs as a jr, he could probably play a few spots.
