The anticipation is building towards another exciting season of college baseball in Coral Gables that now seems just around the corner as the Mid-February opening day quickly approaches.
With the new year comes a new season of hope, change and opportunity for your Miami Hurricane baseball team.
Hope is found in the 'Canes outstanding pitching staff; change can be found in the coaching staff; and opportunity comes in the form of the many new players joining the team this season.
Apparently, several people who should know college baseball on a National level agree. The University of Miami hardballers landed at the No. 14 spot on the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason Top 40.
The Hurricanes return 18 players from a season ago in which the Hurricanes finished 38-23 overall (19-10 ACC). Miami advanced to their NCAA-record 39th consecutive NCAA Regional as they traveled to the Gainesville [Fla.] Regional.
Among the returning players for the Hurricanes is the entire starting pitching staff that includes Bryan "B-Rad" Radziewski, Eric "Bob Marley and The" Whaley and Steven "Dallas" Ewing. Former starting pitcher E.J. Echinosa will move to the bullpen as the closer.
Head coach Jim Morris will begin his 19th year as head coach at UM as the Hurricanes open the season at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park (ARP) against Rutgers for a three-game series beginning on Friday, February 17.
Gino DiMare rejoins the University of Miami baseball team after three years away from the program. He will serve as an assistant coach in charge of hitting, as well as assisting with recruiting. Overall, this will be the 13th year for DiMare as a member of the Hurricanes baseball staff.
Prior to his exit in 2008, DiMare served as the Canes recruiting coordinator and hitting coach over his final nine seasons. He held the title of assistant head coach during the 2008 season - a year the Canes won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship before advancing to the College World Series.
DiMare will serve as the assistant coach in charge of hitters and share responsibilities with pitching coach J.D. Arteaga in recruiting efforts.
Previously, DiMare helped recruit and coach players such as Yonder Alonso, Ryan Braun, Jon Jay, Gaby Sanchez (seen below M), Danny Valencia and Jemile Weeks - all of whom have reached the big leagues in recent years.
The Canes will host 16 of their first 18 games inside ARP to open the year, including a series with the preseason top-ranked Florida Gators beginning Friday, March 2.
Miami will play a total of 54 games in 2012, including 41 of those contests in the Sunshine State.
And just this past week Morris and the Hurricanes got some really good news regarding a potential star player who will join Miami for the 2012 season.
Susan Miller Degnan from the Miami Herald reported on Friday that the NCAA approved former Bethune-Cookman star catcher Peter O'Brien's appeal to compete for the Hurricanes during the 2012 season.
O'Brien, 6-5 and 225 pounds, is a senior, so he needed the OK to be able to finish out his career with the Canes without having to sit out the customary season. He was drafted this past summer in the third round -- 107th overall -- by the Colorado Rockies, but did not come to terms with the Rockies on a contract offer by the Aug. 15 deadline.
O'Brien is a big-time Major League prospect. He was never recruited by UM, and flourished with the Wildcats. He grew up in Miami Gardens and played at Braddock High.
His numbers last season at Bethune: .304 batting average with 14 home runs and 69 RBI. He was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2010, and was a freshman All-American from Louisville Slugger in 2009.
Canespace will be at ARP for the opener on 2/17, at Florida Gulf Coast (Fort Myers) on 2/22, in Miami on 3/6 at Miami Marlins Ball Park (exhibition game), on 3/14 at UCF (Orlando) and on 4/22 at FSU in Tallahassee.
We hope U are able to join us for some Hurricane hardball this season.
GO CANES!
Again

Scouts.com Kristen Kenney, according to ESPN rumor central, reported Goldman "may" have eliminated Miami, so it's tentative right now.

That's not what her twitter says. It reads "Goldman to UM is done."
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 22, 2012 at 11:48 AM
UPDATE: Eddie Goldman (Collegiate Academy/Washington DC), ESPN Recruiting Nation's no. 2 overall recruit, may have trimmed down his list of schools to three options.
"According to (Scout.com's) Kristen Kenney, while Eddie Goldman took a visit to Miami, the 'Canes are likely out of it," John Crist of NoleDigest.com relayed. "It'll be FSU, Alabama or Auburn."
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | January 22, 2012 at 03:21 PM
Ohio,
"May" have trimmed?
"Likely" out of it?
It sounds like an individuals opinion and not real reporting, wouldn't you agree?
Plus, with how recruiting has been, i would not be surprised who ends up with us when it's all said done.
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | January 22, 2012 at 03:35 PM
Well, there's no $ on the table to come to UM, so whoever commits will be 100% Cane.

Alright. 86, the bbq email is fine to use for Fran
Posted by: Six | January 22, 2012 at 06:23 PM
durand scott is having a hard time adjusting to a structured offense...he is still trying to playground out there...and because of this he isnt getting the looks he was getting last year because often times he is out of position...and because of this he is missing alot of shots he would normally make and forcing up more 3's than he did last year...so he is losing confidence in his shot and starting to second guess his instincts...malcom grant is having alot of the same problems...but you can attribute his bad shooting to other things also if you wanna give him the benefit of the doubt...both of these players feed off of emotion and it is hard to get emotionally charged when you are not shooting good and also learning a new defensive scheme...alot of easy baskets are made in transition from turnovers and when you are learning a new defense it takes time to gain confidence in that defense...
IMO this season is lost and larranaga should concentrate on teaching fundamentals the rest of the year...
Posted by: SlingBlade | January 22, 2012 at 06:46 PM
Damn shame the Ravens game-really wanted to see the old guys get back to the Super Bowl. I thought the receiver caught it at the end, bot feet came down he had possesion of the ball-never bobbled it, then was stripped-bad luck
Posted by: TJL | January 22, 2012 at 06:48 PM

big news, six. Oregon is going backwards at the same time SC comes off sanctions. They will find someone good, just not in time for signing day.
Anyone else think that was a TD for Baltimore at the end? Two feet down, held the ball for a second at least. If a RB funbles while crossing the goal line in indentical situation it's a TD

Papa Cane on Tracy Howard: Excellent athlete, CB and young man. Gifted cover guy. Wants to leave Miami. Used to love FSU - rumors of silent commitment. Silent commitment rumor was a while back. Loved Florida. Leaned towards them. Then USC/LSU joined. Coach Golden never stopped. Kept pushing for a visit. Now got him to visit. Small chance. I don't expect it. I've said it lots. He is very close with UM verbal commitment Deon Bush. That might help a bit but TH wants to go out of town. Respect that.

Convince Howard to stay home in the big city to spend the best four years of his life and with a major need at the position also? How hard could that be? Let's ask Jacoby Brisett that one.

Remember the Name: CB/WR DaCarlos Renfro, 5'10'' & 175 lbs from Texas. Talked to UM coaches. Might land offfer. Video: http://ow.ly/8CM7n

Joe Paterno, not only fulfilled a promise he made to his father by making an impact,he left an indelible piece of himself w/every1 he touched. The values Coach Paterno instilled in each of us fortunate enough to play for or work alongside him will never be diminished. They are manifested in our leadership, character, class and dedication to improving the lives of others in the classroom, workforce & community. They are distinctly evident in the way we raise our children and the types of husbands and fathers we have grown to be. I am forever grateful for the impact that Joseph Vincent Paterno has made on my life and I am not ashamed to say to Coach and his family that the way of your former players will carry your legacy forward is by humbly improving the lives of those we touch every day. #ThankUJoe!

lol is he on crack, I thought he might be saying that but i refused to believe it? I was thinking the quote was missing a word or something. If Jacory threw a ball into a car wash it would probably not have enough on it to make it out the other side.
Hey Jacory needs this though more power to him, maybe his work with DREW has him really working on that part of his game.

He already knows he could play immediately, he'd get a better education, and that he'd be close to his mom.

Dequan Ivery apparently had a surprise visit to UM this weekend and we're now 50/50 vs Louisville.

This is my analysis on our LB's
Miami Projected LB Corps
I project this unit to be improved from the 2011 unit by leaps and bounds. Losing Spence hurts in the leadership dept but his production will be made up for by the improvement overall. We get bigger and stronger and will be in our 2nd year of the defense which I feel will really be helpful. Not to mention an improved DL and DB play to help our LB’s run free and make more plays.
WLB Perryman- This former 3 Star played well last year and seems to be ready to fill Spence’s shoes. He should check in close to 230 and be a master of the defense by next fall, look for little drop off from Spence’s production but more pop to his hits which can result in more T.O’s
MLB Paul- This former 3 star LB did not play much last year, but anyone who saw his highlight tape will recognize he has what it takes to be special, with a year in to learn the defense I think he has a leg up on the incoming recruits to start and he has more football and tackling ability needed for the MLB spot then Gaines or Cain. Checking in last year at 230 lbs he has the size needed for this demanding position.
Buchanon- A four star prospect out of H.S. he has been decent but not great at U.M. He really needs to step up and play well this year to have a chance at the NFLU. He has great speed at 4.41 but is undersized at 222, hopefully a year of UTough can get him closer to 230 and bring us the experience and speed we need to make our LB corps a feared unit once more.
Key Reserves, the aforementioned Gaines and Cain played a lot last year and will be the first LB rotated in, they honestly do not seem to do a lot well except try hard, maybe another year of Utough will help them get stronger and help them on the field. Kirby and possibly Northrup both have the size and talent to make an impact as a key reserve and special teams their freshman year.
Avg Exp of starting unit 1.25 seasons, Avg projected weight 230 HT 5”11, Speed 4.5
Our unit will be short but not small and fast and hit people in the mouth, really reminds you of the old Miami teams.

I didn't listen to Vermeil's quote or see the video but just reading it made it seem like he was saying "Jacory couldn't hit water in a car wash"...just how I read it
Posted by: Hillviewcane | January 23, 2012 at 03:13 PM
eg couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. He is so inaccurate he couldn't hit water in a car wash

I like Eddie Johnson to make it into the LB rotation this season.

D line ends with a bang both leonard williams and Eddie Goldman....
Secondary ends with Tracy howard

U are VERY optimistic, UpNorth. Lol, I like it!

UpNorth,
I feel ya dog. Wishin, wanting & hoping is all we got left. It's sad when you look at those projections and Rutgers has 3 picks for destinations but I feel our blues will continue one more year, with this mad push to signing day. We haven't had much luck the last couple of years of luring top prospects the last 2 weeks before signing day. A lot of kids love to visit, because of the weather & scenery. We have to finish on the field and be a little more consistent to start flipping, some of these dudes. If FSU gets Goldman, they will be loaded for some years to come on their De-line. I don't care what Flo. gets, we don't play them enough for it to matter. FSU is who I measure us against as far as recruiting and right now, they've got it going on, at least with the big dogs. We have one more chance this weekend, with Howard, Williams & Hamilton coming in. It's hard to get these out of stae mama's boys to come this far South, no matter how much paradise you offer.

Herbie i hear you on that buddy I dont care about Florida nor do i respect them one bit always ducking us... Fswho is a choker in my book we shall see what comes about with their recruiting classes, get our recruits into the Utough program and coach them up by their second year or so they'll be playing like the so called 5* players..
I just think Goldman makes his pops happy and keeps true to himself and picks UM, its his childhood dream school and he's gonna pick Fswho i just dont see it happening .

SOUP, got email this morning. That's actually the same info Papa Cane sent us back at the beginning of December. Thanks for the info tho!

Yes but it was confirmation of the info from a completely unrelated source. That's when you KNOW U have something!

Agreed. Great info as always! Thanks again!

Jimmy Gaines will be the starting MLB. He was this past season and you can only expect him to be better. Golden constantly praised him this past season, therefore i don't see how you guys get him unseated by players who have never played there. If we totally transition to a 3-4 , we will need 2 MLBs anyway

1. Totally agree.
2. NCAA data for over 30 years shows that 80% of players sign with a school in their home State and usually the one closest to home.
3. There is more mobility of players today because the recruiting process (hat game) and access to information has changed due to the Internet and recruiting services but still it is hard to get OOS players to sign.

i think gaines played by default we didn't have anyone capable of taking the reigns on that position without hurting another one of our lb positions specifically spence's....
Posted by: UpNorthCane | January 23, 2012 at 03:56 PM
Hassan...I agree with U, I like Paul or Gains or Johnson at the MLB spot and leave Buchanan and Perryman at OLB.
