Long-time Canespacer and well known blogger "Six" filed this report from the sidelines at the 2012 Under Armour game from St. Petersburg...
Got to the UnderArmour game around 4pm. Lots of people there. Here’s my story from the sidelines:
Talked with: Herm Edwards, Mooch (Mariucci), Cam Newton, Prime Time, Chris Weinke, Ron Zook, Ty Detmer, Preston Dewey, Duke Johnson, Dante Fowler and Nelson Agholor for a bit.
Hung out with: Chick, Daddy Chick and Leon McQuay III (again, remember the name b/c he was already the top rated Junior in the nation at his position – he will most likely be top 3 in the nation this upcoming year at his position) during the game.
When talking with Mooch, he came up and saw my “U” hat on – he asked me if I was from the “U”, I said no but I’ve been a die hard fan since I was a kid. He said that he knows all about the “U” b/c he works with Sapp and Irvin, he then paused, looked at me with wide eyes for a bit and then said .. “they’re …. intense .. about their school”, then exhaled his breath and shook his head a little. Funny ass guy, real good guy as well.
I asked Herm Edwards how his life was going so far, if he loves doing TV more than coaching – of course he does. TV is a hell of a lot easier, the money is good and he gets to spend more time with family. He then said that his neighbor back at home in Cali was pretty cool .. I asked him who it was .. he said “Clint Eastwood”.
That must be nice. Herm said Clint has a 27,000 square foot house he chills in. That must be nice as well. Herm was cool as hell when he was a coach with the Bucs back with Dungy – he hasn’t changed, cool cool cat.
Cam Newton is large.
Talked with Preston Dewey, he was standing next to Ty Detmer for basically the entire game. He and Ty would talk to each other after each snap, do a little pointing – must be nice to have a Ty Detmer as your high school head coach and also QB coach. Preston told me he wasn’t playing, said his hammy was acting up. Kid throws a nice ball during warm ups. He was throwing with Chad Kelly – that kid likes to run. When I say likes to run, I mean like he’s a squirrel that got loose on the field type of likes to run.
Eddie Goldman is a man already. Big, big kid.
Nelson Agholor had Duke, Chick, Dewey & Jean-Louis in his ear all night. Agholor is a great kid, real personable, smart. When his team was getting blown out and it was almost over, some big ass OLineman came up to him, Duke and some other players who were sitting on the bench and said “it’s not over, it’s not over, remember that we’re All-Americans and we’re going out like All-Americans” – he was slapping hands with Agholor, Duke, etc. and then walked off. Agholor then turns to these 3 kids who were standing behind the bench and said “now look kids, I’m not saying you should ever quit, ever, and I don’t know why he came over and was trying to tell us that it’s not over (their team was down by 30+ with 2 mins left in the game) -but- there’s something called reality and he hasn’t grasped it yet b/c ya, this game is over” .. and then Agholor pointed to the scoreboard.
When the #1 Safety committed to ‘Bama on the air, I was standing with Agholor and Duke – they both said “damn, ‘Bama getting another player? They’re gonna have the #1 class”
Chick is great. I hung with him for about half a quarter. I talked to him about how everything is going down there. Asked him about him being seen on crutches, he said that he just had to get some bone spurs taken out, nothing big at all. Kid is big and he’s gonna fill out even more. I asked him what he thought of Duke Johnson .. Chick said one word .. “beast”. When Duke’s team was waiting for a kickoff, Chick was standing about 30 feet behind him, yelling at him, “Dukeee. Dukeee. Dukeee”. Duke turned around, nodded, had the ball come to him – then Duke did his thing and almost housed the kickoff. Chick said he was talking with Dante Fowler all night, that’s his boy, he’s trying to do everything he can to flip him.
Chick then took off into the stands to go hang with Josh Grady (Armwood QB that is a Frosh at Vandy). That’s when Leon McQuay III walked up and I hung with him for a while. Real real quiet kid, shy, big ass smile though, insanely humble it seems. Chick is friends with him as well, you know Chick is in his ear about heading to Miami.
Talked with Daddy Chick. Guy has hands the size of catcher’s mitts. He had some interesting takes on the Canes D. Also had some interesting takes on the players that left early. Said he was beyond impressed with DZP and told Chick that he needs to hang with him as much as possible, learn how to tackle from him as well. Daddy Chick also told me that when they first got down to Miami, he told Golden that Chick was better than any of the DLineman they had presently – including #35 (who he thought should’ve stayed another year because he might play OLB in a 3-4).
One more thing, my co-worker is good friends with Avery Young's coach. Had a nice long convo with the coach at the game tonight - he said that he talked to Saban a couple of days ago and had to tell him that Avery wasn't thinking about 'Bama anymore.
First?

New Guy,
SEC is the best overall conference, especially defensively. Pac-12 has better throwing QB's, which could give SEC some trouble and USC, might be the only team athlete wise, to dethrone those guys.
Posted by: herbieibis | January 06, 2012 at 01:41 PM
UMike, I believe the hard opponents are necessary to draw revenue. Cupcakes will draw 20-40K. Bring a Notre Dame or Ohio State to South Florida and you have a sellout.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 06, 2012 at 01:26 PM
Tony..I was at the OSU game..FAR from a sellout..but I can understand your point. I do think Notre Dame will bring in a large crowd, but so will winning.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 06, 2012 at 02:50 PM
U are right Mike but as of the last 6 years, that conference has ruled, with no end in sight. As long as the Alabamas of the world keep stock piling the top talent on a regular basis, it's going to be tough to dethrone those guys. I'm not saying they will or any other of those top dogs in that conference will win the ship every year but they will be in the hunt, one of them will anyway!

Good stuff 6, would like to have been a fly on the wall to hear the parts you had to leave out. I'd still like to hear about the convo with Kehoe the other week.
Funny thing is, I say I'm not going to get all wrapped up in this recruiting thing each year, but once again, I LIED!
I found myself getting mad b/c I feel these kids don't fully understand the tradition, and see the opportunity to play. The only thing I can think of is a lot of coaches are planting "death penalty" nonsense in their heads.
Further more living in Columbus, I have to listen to everyone tell me how Urban is cleaning up and will restore the program in no time.

SEC best conference? Maybe. South Carolina, not all that, Georgia they're ok (lost to Boise), auburn without Cam they are middle of the road, Florida (hahaha laughably bad especially for how hyped they are by the media), Arkansas is good/very good, I don't know much about ole miss or the others but all those teams I listed are not elite and can lose to any other conferences middle of the road teams. I would argue the big ten is better Michigan is coming back as will Ohio state (unfortunately), Wisconsin is good and Michigan state is average.
I just want the U back and dominating again. I agree the SEC will always have a team in it, with the money and coaches they have they aren't going anywhere for a while but teams will start catching up to what they are doing and will adjust.

Good going on the blogging gentlemen. (Soup & Six !)
When I first read Six's post I thought, MAN that is a LOT of cool info! I'm glad you saw fit to "upgrade" it to the status it deserves.
(Your UAAA coverage was awesome reading too Soupster!)
My two "textbooks" arrived today, so I'll be spending much of the weekend doing Coach Golden's (and 86's) homework, and read them.
As a high school coach myself for over thirty years I figure there'll be plenty of stuff in them to help me become a better coach, teacher & mentor.
OK, no more posting from me till I do my homework...

Rivals says he had offers from U-La-La, Memphis, TTU, Tulane. Some interest from LSU but no offer. Unrated by them as well.

Honestly, with where Brissett wound up last year, where Garmon is going based on it's NFLU status (NOT Miami) and the Iowa depth chart, and where so many other guys are going it just seems like we pay way more attention and are more deductive and rational about recruiting than any single prospect out there. Heck with it, just hoping they produce in a couple years.

Fish story
The Marlins owner promises the moon in Miami. Don't believe him.
By Chris Jones
ESPN The Magazine
... You're about to witness the Montreal scenario play itself out again, only on a far grander, even more heartbreaking scale.
In early December, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission opened an investigation into how the new ballpark was funded: Nearly 80 percent of the money came from Miami and Miami-Dade County, after Loria and Samson pleaded poverty -- just as they had in Montreal -- and claimed they needed substantial public financing to build a new stadium if the Marlins were to remain in town. The kicker? When the Marlins' financial documents later showed up on Deadspin, they revealed that Loria and Samson had been raking it in, mostly by pocketing money from "richer" clubs through revenue sharing. In 2008 and 2009, the team actually made a profit of nearly $49 million. Whoops.
At least when Montreal was saddled with enormous debt for a stadium, the city got the Olympics out of it. Miami has buried itself under what will prove a $1.2 billion burden ... to keep the Marlins. They've finished dead last in National League attendance seven straight seasons; even when the Marlins won the World Series in 2003, their average attendance was just over 16,000. Will a new ballpark really make any fundamental difference to this duped city's appetite for baseball? Maybe for a brief burst, the way it did in Pittsburgh...

This has always been about Dade County sports. Most particularly football Until the most talented athletes coalesce, and come together as a team, not just from one school, we will have the "northwestern years."
Bratton, Highsmith, Armstead, Barrow and Smith could have gone anywhere else. They wanted better for their hometown. Now, kids seem to want to be from Miami without being from Miami.
These NW kids are gone. There is a future at UM It is a great opportunity for you all. For all South Florida kids at UM, you have a chance to shape your own destiny, to declare you want to be a player at UM. The timin g is absolutely right but you must make the choice. You grew up as Canes. Now is your opportunity to restore the prgram to prominence based on your talent. It is timw to defend the home turf.

Really wish ESPN would actually try to be up to date on their prospects database. Having Briscoe at his 16 year old size is absurd. Either way, hope the killer B's from Louisiana, Briscoe/Bourque, can anchor the defense in the future.

Somehow, someday I think that there will the equivalent of a 30 for 30 special that details the "enhanced" recruiting that is reputed to go on in the SEC, showing what transpired was nothing less than a high-tech version of what the Southwest Conference engaged in on the "Pony Express" documentary.
Whatever scandal cracks it, ESPN mouthpieces will be aghast...that this was out of the blue and so under the radar that they could not have possibly known.
BTW, the book "Third and Out" which details Rich Rodriguez's tenure at W. Virginia and Michigan came out recently. Picked it up at the library and read it last weekened. Very interesting regarding the dysfunction at both schools, particularly W Virginia.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 07, 2012 at 10:43 AM
The problem with all the cheating going on in the SEC is that it is so wide spread that if they busted 1 school the whole conference would be affected, meaning they would all go down. Sorry, the SEC brings in top $$$ for the NCAA, ESPN, ABC and NBC including local retail outlets. There is to much at stake for everyone if LSU and Alabama and Auburn and UF all go down. Who would the top dog of the SEC be, Vandy... Please. Wouldn't it be funny if the SEC was just better and not cheating. Nah, that's funny.

Dysfunction #1: Absence of Trust
This occurs when team members are reluctant to be vulnerable with one another and are unwilling to admit their mistakes, weaknesses or needs for help. Without a certain comfort level among team members, a foundation of trust is impossible.
Dysfunction #2: Fear of Conflict
Teams that are lacking on trust are incapable of engaging in unfiltered, passionate debate about key issues, causing situations where team conflict can easily turn into veiled discussions and back channel comments. In a work setting where team members do not openly air their opinions, inferior decisions are the result.
Dysfunction #3: Lack of Commitment
Without conflict, it is difficult for team members to commit to decisions, creating an environment where ambiguity prevails. Lack of direction and commitment can make team members, particularly star players, disgruntled.
Dysfunction #4: Avoidance of Accountability
When teams don't commit to a clear plan of action, even the most focused and driven individuals hesitate to call their peers on actions and behaviors that may seem counterproductive to the overall good of the team.
Dysfunction #5: Inattention to Results
Team members naturally tend to put their own needs (ego, career development, recognition, etc.) ahead of the collective goals of the team when individuals aren't held accountable. If a team has lost sight of the need for achievement, the business ultimately suffers.
The Rewards
Striving to create a functional, cohesive team is one of the few remaining competitive advantages available to any organization looking for a powerful point of differentiation.
Functional teams avoid wasting time talking about the wrong issues and revisiting the same topics over and over again because of lack of buy-in.
Functional teams also make higher quality decisions and accomplish more in less time and with less distraction and frustration.

there are HUNDREDS of kids that SEC teams recruit that go elsewhere. Some of those kids, Miami commits for example, HATE teams like UF. If there was this unbelievable cheating going on, it would have been exposed long ago as one of these kids would blow the whistle. For example, if UF was offering chick money or something enticing (strip clubs, yachts, pool tournaments) do you really believe that he would just let it go? You guys have this utterly absurd perception of the SEC because you are tired of seeing it whip everyone elses ass. Bottom line. Soup, when you post a blog and make a bunch of vague accusations it just makes you look like a hack. Wake up man. Football is religion in the SEC. The ACC? Not so much. It affects the final tally.

Sounded rationale of a recruit this year: playing time and proximity to home the reasons why he chose Miami. Props to Bush on doing his homework. Could've Brissett'd it and played behind Landon Collins before transferring to Northern Illinois in 2 years if he made the mistake Garmon's making playing behind 7 guys.

Deon chose wisely.
Turbodawg- you're extremely naive and have your head in the sand if you think the SEC isn't doing a little "enhanced" recruiting.

cmon down Tyriq McCord
Posted by: SlingBlade | January 07, 2012 at 01:55 PM
TurboDawg, if "enhanced" recruiting is transpiring as many suspect, I think the reasons that it is not exposed is:
1) Many teams do it, not just the SEC
2) Mutually Assured Destruction. If Texas were to somehow rat out an LSU for instance, perhaps LSU releases something on the Longhorns that would be equally damaging.

Ohio you are the MVP of Canespace not to forget that SOUP is the king of this site.

Haha, if you check the ESPN twitter recruiting feed on the Recruiting Page, no mention of Tyriq to Miami, just speculation pretty much elsewhere. They also were total homers about Garmon going to Iowa, which was correct and made sense since Iowa basically owns Erie, PA. Still hilarious nonetheless.

^Nuff said. Seems ESPN is steamed to lose an SEC guy, as they aren't even reporting it yet.
