Allen Iverson may go all ballistic on us but yes indeed today we are talking about practice and nothing but practice. Football practice to be more exact.
On an absolutely delicious Winter Day in Central Florida the Under Armour All-America Game practices concluded today at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
If you live in Florida or have been to Disney World and have never been to this beautiful facility then you need to get there and get there soon.
It is a magnificent and expansive maze of soccer, football and baseball fields for high school, college and other amateur sports competitions.
The site also serves as the official Spring training facility of the Atlanta Braves and as a result plays host to some of major league baseball's most famous and talented athletes each year.
Each year the Wide World of Sports complex hosts a week of practice leading up to the Under Armour All-America game for some of the Nation's most talented and highly recruited high school football players.
And when you go there you always have a good time but you never know who you are going to meet.
I met current Miami Hurricane DE Anthony Chickillo and his famous former Hurricane father who told me...well, due to confidentiality clauses I signed I can't really tell you what they told me, but trust me it was all good!
The actual game is not played at the Disney Complex in Orlando but at Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, in St. Petersburg near Tampa.
This year's contest is scheduled for tomorrow night, January 5th at 7 PM.
University of Miami recruits and verbal commits RB Randy "Duke" Johnson (seen above in kick return formation) and WR Angelo Jean-Louis were on hand to participate in the drills led by former NFL head coaches Steve Mariucci and Herm Edwards.
On the practice fields the coaches were a contrast in styles. Mariucci was all business and talking techniques with his offensive players while Edwards was all about his defense and yelling out loud to motivate his players.
At one point Edwards, who was working with former NFL WR Keyshawn Johnson to coach Team Blur (black), could be heard yelling across the field:
"Don't follow the eyes (of the QB). The eyes are trying to look you off of the real target. Play your area of the zone and follow the QB's shoulders. When you see the shoulders start to turn or the top hand come off the football that's when he is gonna let it go and then you break on the ball."
Later he was in a joking mood with Keyshawn and his team when he teased them out loud:
"Sure, you say you wanna be a star but can you get it done when the lights come on? Can you get it done in crunch time? Don't come out here if you are afraid. If you're afraid just go buy a poodle and put a pink bow on it and stay home."
On the other practice field Mariucci the technician was seen in the offensive backfield working with the QB's of Team Highlight (white). He could be heard coaching up UM verbal commit Duke Johnson and saying:
"You have use the play fake to decoy into the line and be patient; pause and then pop out to the left side to set up the screen properly. That will help set up your blockers for a big gain."
Marucci had his team work specific down-and-distance situations, player substitutions, nickle and dime packages on defense, the "Hail Mary" play and then spent an incredible amount of time for an All-Star game working on special teams.
Team Blur practiced kickoff coverage, punt returns, field goals from the center of the field, the left and right hash marks and even ran several on-side kicks. They also learned and how to cover of a fake field goal by their opponent where players and coaches yelled "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!"
After the practices ended the media (and me) had the opportunity to interview some of the players who were made available. Unfortunately, Duke Johnson was not among them.
But WR Angelo Jean-Louis was. He is an impressive and out-going young man who is articulate, out-spoken and a lot of fun to be around.
I wrote down every word he said on my notepad during a lengthy interview and when I got home and translated my notes here is what he really said:
I'm just saying!

2G Chickillo looks like he might still have a few gallons left in the tank. The Fred Flinstone neck is obviously hereditary in that gene pool. Great blog SOUP, really enjoyed reading about practice and Iverson never won jack so he obviously never knew what he was talking about to begin with.

Posted by: SOUP | January 04, 2012 at 11:48 PM
UpNorth...a lot of these ballers are VERY good. Most are just good, and a few others not so much. There are many, many factors that go into recruiting and player evaluation.
If you heard the 1:1 interviews that I did today then U would know why some players are being recruited heavily by the BIG dawgs and others are not.
There is a LOT to be praised about and also a lot to desired about some of these soon to be college "student-athletes".

As a WVU grad, I'm celebrating the ass kicking in the Orange Bowl!!! (PS - I hope the 'Canes are preforming like this soon. They can really beat anyone in the ACC if they get it together.)
Posted by: HawaiiCane | January 05, 2012 at 12:34 AM
Forget the talk about practice! Let's talk bowl games. Just like last night, the ACC champion went down in flames again, against a Big East opponent, and it wasn't even competitive. I don't get it. These teams play us so well and then go out and flame in bowl games. Why? Why can't we win the ACC against teams that don't stack up well against out of conference opponents?
Yes, VT thoroughly outplayed Michigan but they still lost. Clemson gave up tonight, worst performance I have ever seen by a conference winner. Dabo is an over-rated coach but this wasn't just coaching. This was extremely talented players not competing.
Why can't we win the ACC against these teams? Our recruits in 2008 were far better than these guys overall but we couldn't even finish 2011 with a winning record. It isn't just Randy or Coker. There is something bigger wrong with the U right now. We have lost the belief. We expect to lose the big games. We feel we are not entitled to win. Until that changes, we will always be a team that loses to teams that lost 63-26 in bowl games.

The National Football League announced its 2012 Pro Bowl Rosters on Tuesday and the Miami Hurricanes lead all NCAA programs with five players chosen to play in the annual all-star contest on Jan. 29 in Hawai'i.
The Ravens' Ed Reed and Ray Lewis, the Saints' Jimmy Graham, the Patriot's Vince Wilfork and San Francisco's Frank Gore make up five of the 11 players from the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn a trip to the Pro Bowl.
The five selections for Miami are more than all other schools in the state of Florida as UCF, Florida State, USF and Florida each have one selection. Pittsburg was the second-most represented college football program as they saw four players earn nods. Michigan, Ole Miss, Georgia, Cal and USC earned three selections apiece.
Last season, Miami was represented by 10 players that were on the Pro Bowl roster and in 2010, a record 11 Hurricanes earned the honor.
WHICH IS WHY GREG GARMON PICKED IOWA? LOL

SJM, the only thing i see wrong with us is what's gone on here since Coker took over. We weren't recruiting players to fit our systems so much as we were just recruiting great players. i don't think there is any question that we've had talent come through here the last ten years we just didn't have talent to fit our system or didn't have a system in place (more likely). Alot of this comes with losing coordinators and assistant coaches so often. Hopefully Golden has a system in place and it's a good one.

Its astonishing how "chicken little" some of our fan base has become. Glass half empty is even too positive an outlook for some of these malcontents who would rather complain about who we lose instead of commend who we have in the fold WITHOUT any real insight about the goings on in recruiting.

Looking at Oklahoma right now and they are in the process of bouncing 6-7 formerly four and five star recruits from the program because of "attitude". Three more left during the season.
A walk on, Dom Whaley, was the leading rusher for them until he was hurt in the seventh game. Two five star RBs left the program during the season because of it.
Bob Stoops, when he was asked about all the defections said..."I just want kids who want to be here...we can teach them everything except that"

DUNH, It's hilarious that Clemson makes their fans wait most of a generation to finally win the league again they used to absolutely run and then the payoff is . . . Dabo! I can't decide which is worse, the woodshed trip or Scarface Ball imploding while they try to say they found a kicker after the fact? Sure you found a kicker, who can't make the kick when the game's on the line, that will come in real handy, go get three more just like him and enjoy your empty trophy case while hoping not to suck hot lead at a random traffic stop or engineering class meeting, yokels. Slightly better than Bill Dooley, but worse than Dabo, what a combination.
If Al says either one of them are the standard or benchmark or anything similar again any time soon, it's time for some mental reprogramming of him to keep the weak sh!t from infecting the rest of the football culture at Miami. Schnell's got a lot of free time on his hands now, maybe he can address the the roster to inoculate them from that BS?

Jon Bastian -
"Elite offensive lineman Avery Young had a good week at the Under Armour All-America practices and is now set to play in the game tonight.
The impressive 6’5 and 292-pound tackle from Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) talked about recruiting with CaneInsider.com. Although his top three does not include Miami, it hasn’t stopped the UM coaching staff from making a hard push for Young’s services.
“Not too many,” he said about colleges still recruiting him. “It has slowed down a little bit because I have a solid top three which is Florida, Georgia and Auburn. I still have one more school to see and that is Miami. I will say that they are the hardest school now that is really making sure I come on a visit. Just making sure I get an opportunity to decide on what I really want to do.”
With Miami in hunt, Young said it will not be too hard for them to break into his top three, but that all depends on how well his official visit goes on January 20.
“Not hard, but at the same time I look at the coaches and the surrounding of the kids and type of kids they have on their team. Like with Florida and Auburn, they are a great group of guys. My cousin plays for Auburn, Brandon Fulse, the tight end. One of my best friends is Tre Mason, the running back they have. When I went there on my visit, I felt at home. It was a great group of kids, same thing at Florida and Georgia.
"So, that is the main thing. When I go down there on a visit I will see how they carry themselves and how things work. I don’t want to go to a program with a group of kids that don’t know how to act.”
Miami head coach Al Golden has developed a really good relationship with Young’s father. Golden now needs to win over Avery in order to have another offensive lineman join his roster for 2012.
“Miami coach I stay in contact with is Al Golden. He is a real good guy. Him and my dad have a real great relationship. I haven’t really talked to him in a while because I haven’t had a phone in a while. He is a real good guy and everything is good with him and my family.”
Randy “Duke” Johnson committed to Miami and has been an ambassador for UM ever since. At the Under Armour AA practices, he is on the same team as Young. “He is my running back on my team,” said Young. “We have been doing pretty good so far. He is real fast.”"

Ohio's recruiting prediction for the night: Lucas Thompson picks UM, Wes Brown picks Maryland.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 05, 2012 at 02:06 PM
FROM HURRICANESPORTS.COM:
Seven Miami Hurricanes have been invited to play in three different all-star games showcasing the nation’s top senior talent.
Wide receiver LaRon Byrd and tight end Chase Ford will be playing in the East-West Shrine Game, the longest-running all-star game in college football. The Shrine Game, which will be played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Jan. 21, has served as a benefit event for Shriners Hospitals for Children since 1925.
Lee Chambers, Joel Figueroa and Micanor Regis will join other NFL draft-eligible collegiate players for the inaugural Battle of Florida All-Star Game. The game will feature legendary coaches from the state of Florida – former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden and UM legend Howard Schenellenberger – on the sidelines Jan. 21 at Florida Atlantic University Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
Jacory Harris and Jordan Futch will play in the sixth annual AstroTurf NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The game, which pits the best players from Texas against the rest of the nation, will also be played on Jan 21.

Just post a key paragraph or player quote and a link, not the entire article. There are copyright issues.
The official UM AD site (www.hurricanesports.com) is not really concerned about it because they want to get their message and product out there but the PAY sites do raise hell once in a while. Thanks!

Great 2 see the "U" represented well in the pro-bowl.
Great to see the ACC get punked in the bowl games, except for NC St & FShoo.
Clemson looked like we did against FSU 2 years ago, except, mildly worse.
Va. tech did it's usual, choke in a bowl game.
Thompson to ECU, my pred.
I hope I'm wrong but i don't see any big announcements coming our way from the all-star game tonight.
This conference is a joke and why for the life of me we don't have at least 4 ACC ships is beyond me, well i do know, lack of stable coaching, not developing QB's, poor evaluations in recruiting and lack of depth over the years at QB, CB, LB & DT. I could also throw in there WR. At one point and time or another all these positions have or were been over looked.
We can still stock pile NFL rosters & produce pro-bowlers but for the last 8 to 10 years why have the boys not produced consistently here.
Where's the first or second team All-Americans at?
In order for us to get back to where we need to be we have to get our share of difference makers, every year and develop the grunt 3 star guys and if we are going to keep running the antiquated pro-style offense we need to recruit kids that run it in high school and we need a good QB coach, which I think we have.
In our worst year in this conference, we should at least be 5-3.

Whats going on people....
My guess on thompson is he Chooses the U works hard to get cleared if hes not able to ends up going either prep or Juco then becomes a Hurricane... I just dont see why he would pick ECU ...
Are prep schools free of charge for athletes?

No one in the Senior Bowl? Kinda sad. Jacory is the 2nd best QB statistically at "QB U" and he is playing in a crappy all star game.
Regis will make an NFL roster. Jacory will if he takes the same stuff Barry Bonds took during his 70 HR season.

Ill tell you what if Danny wuerffel, Ryan leaf, Rex grossman, and the list goes on made NFL teams and at one point or another started ill bet my money Jacory will be on an NFL roster one day

All of a sudden, I'm reading Lucas Thompson is expected to choose ECU. Hmmm
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 05, 2012 at 04:11 PM
Looks like we won't be getting any new commits tonight. Unless Wes Brown shocks everyone and doesn't pick Maryland.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 05, 2012 at 04:14 PM
Ohio i gtta feeling man Wes Brown, Keith Brown, Lucas, Bush, and Goldman will all pick the U
Posted by: UpNorthCane | January 05, 2012 at 04:25 PM
That's one hell of a feeling, UpNorth. Lol. Hope U are right. I'd be more than shocked if that happens.

RB Montee Ball returning for senior season at Wisconsin.
Now this is the type of kid we need to recruit...team players instead of individual selfish players who think that
everything is only based on talent and make premature decision to go to the NFL and lose millions.

First time, long time.
Love the site.
Which of our firmly committed has the best mean streak?
Posted by: LB | January 05, 2012 at 05:02 PM
Thanks guys!
The ACC should be on the rise in 2012 following a real bad run in the bowls.
I believe in a few seasons we will be as good as the SEC. Miami, FSU, VT,Clemson, GT and others...Time to show up.
