Whoo hoo that is my 2nd first in a row!!!

Anyways let me repost Duke is 189.8 lbs and hopes to be 195 by fall camp. He was 182 at the HS championships. So although he is not a big guy 195 at 5'9ish is not bad, he is strong too. He can give us 7-10 snaps a game next fall.

CGNC

What is expected from the baseball team this year?

j.w.

#4!
Good to see you, CGNC! To answer your question: best UM team we've had in a while. Not sure how far they will go, but we seem to be healthy and we are deeper across the board than in past years. Getting a new catcher should really help both offense and defense

It's the year 2031 in my NCAA dynasty and I have a Greg Mark who I recruited and is starting DT. How ironic.

Knew Daniel Stubbs was up there.

Also, CBS Sports has a Q & A with Al Golden up right now. Worth a read.

Felipe, there's audio of that interview with Brian The Beast London out there if U'd rather listen to it.

Link was posted in a previous blog.

CBSSports.com: You lost a lot of leadership and talent. Is it possible for the incoming freshmen to replace that?

Golden: They have to. We played the most freshmen in America in 2007 and 2008 at Temple and it ended up being these guys that won the most games in the history of that program. There's going to be a lot of young guys that have to play. We recruited 48 guys in the last 13 months, which was exhausting. I think the stat of the year, that goes unnoticed, is that we signed 33 guys on 48 visits. That's hard to do.

*OFF TOPIC*

Terrapin Insider - Maryland Coach Randy Edsall would not release Danny O'Brien to transfer to Vanderbilt, according to individual familiar with the talks.

Uhh, why not? LOL

TheWhat

Thats cause Randy Edsall is a tool. If its one thing hocutt did right before he bolted was not hiring Edsall. The Miami program would have been in shambles and never recovered. I cannot express to you how hated Edsall is in the DC metro area. Maryland alums, the media, everyone hates him and wants him out. How he was able to pick up 2 quality recruits I have no idea. But I'm pretty sure he will be fired in a few years. MD cant fire him now cause they dont have the money to pay him out.

Felipe

Edsall's a POS ahole. So glad we dodged that bullet. The stuff I've read about him from Maryland Press is just devastating. Poor kids there and at UConn.

SOUP

Late on Sunday night, Boston College Eagles fans learned that Sean Desai, the assistant director of football operations at ACC rival Miami, was hired as BC’s new special teams coordinator. He will officially replace Mike Dawson at this position; Dave Brock was previously named as the coordinator, but he left for Rutgers before coaching a game.

There is not much of a file on Desai, but here is what we do know:

• He is 29
• He is from New England (Connecticut)
• Desai did his undergrad study at BU (ick)
• He received his Master’s from Columbia
• He earned his Ph.D. from Temple while working with Al Golden on their football staff.

Felipe

Seriously, if there's a Classless Clown Car of College Coaches, it's:

1. ASU's Graham
2. Maryland's Edsall
3. Florida's Muschamp
4. USC's Kiffin
5. Wisconsin's Bielema (running up score on loser teams with first stringers, saying 'if you're a real Badger, you're giving up groceries' to go to the game in hard economic times, and whining like a girl about Urban Meyer)

Did I miss anyone?

SOUP

More on Sean Desai to BC from another blog:

2. Desai was not a fotball coach at Miami. REPEAT: he was not a football coach at MIAMI. He was an assist to the Director for football operations. Meaning he worked on budgeting, airline scheduling, logitics etc. Not football coaching. This is not an impressive background.

3. Desai was not a recruiter under Golden. Look at his Miami Bio: "Desai works closely with director of football operations Tom Deahn to maintain the day-to-day operations of the football team. In addition, he assists with the administrative side of recruiting." -- Desai was not recruiting, he was performing secrtarial duties for others recruiting

4. Desai's experience includes 4 years as an assistant coach to a high school freshman team!!

5. Desai started working with Golden as an academic adviser to players. Not as a football guy.

6. You are overstating Golden's love for this kid. Desai was a special teams 'coach' (not sure if coach is the right word) at Temple in 2010 only, but when he got to the U, he was removed from coaching and placed in an admin role.

7. He was involved in NCAA football coaching for all of ONE SEASON -- 2010 at Temple.

Count me in there, i might forget so Soup remind all of us the day before the game.

I can see Chick ending up with the sack record. He had 5 sacks in his freshman year. No Matter what happends he has gotten a lot better and stronger. I can see him with 10 or more sacks this year. I can also see him staying all 4 years.

TheWhat

You forgot

Urban Meyer - You cant leave UF for health reasons only to come back in a year to Ohio State and lie about it.

Nick Saban - Over signing

Petrino - for over recruiting so much that the SEC had to put a limit on how many players you can recruit in one year (28)

Larry Coker & Randy Shannon - For taking a program that you have to try really hard to lose with and doing just that. (I just couldnt help myself)

herbieibis

Larry Coker didn't forget how to recruit, he just forgot how to coach and Randy never really new how, (head coach).

TheWhat

I think both Coker and Shannon were poor coaches and poor recruiters. Shannon has a good eye for talent, but when you only have 2 commits upon getting fired and leaving the in-coming coach practically nothing to work with that tells me you just gave up on the most important aspect of college football. As soon as Butch Davis' recruits were gone, Coker's term slid into complete mediocrity.

On shore there's cave tubing (you tube through caves), Mayan ruins even a resort where you stay in luxury treehouses or the beachfront. My brother and his wife went down and had a blast. I don't know about swimming with the dolphins.

Posted by: 86Cane | February 13, 2012 at 01:13 PM

That also means that Golden signed the guys he targeted, and that star-rating was not necessarily his focus. Golden did the best job of locking down the "state of miami" since Butch. It will be interesting to see how these players are developed over the next couple of years. My guess is that near the end of next season, we will know just how good this team can be.

I am excited about what Mr. Golden is doing in CG.

Met Freddie, Matuszak and many more, it was like spending the day hanging out with comic book Superheros.

IN MY OPINION

South Florida sports scene full of excitement, intrigue

BY GREG COTE

gcote@MiamiHerald.com

The football Hurricanes have a popular second-year coach in Al Golden coming off a top-10 national recruiting class, and yet the program braces for looming NCAA sanctions, the ominous unknown, the darker side of interesting times.

UM’s women’s basketball team is No. 6 in the country and thinks it should be in the mix for a first national championship.

Top 2013 QB Recruits: Max Browne, Shane Morris, Kevin Olsen, JT Barrett, Aaron Bailey, Christian Hackenberg, Brice Ramsey, Tyrone Swoopes

Which will Miami get?

j.w.

Olsen! And that's nothing more than a somewhat educated guess, based on where he lives and where his bro. went to school. Who is your pick, Ohio?

Ohio_Cane

I really don't have a pick yet, to be honest.

I'm hoping for Olsen, but I don't know much about any of the others besides Swoopes.

Ohio_Cane

I just looked thru each QB for next year.

I think it's between Olsen and Hackenberg. Both pro-style QBs and both pretty tall at 6'3 and 6'4 respectively.

There's 3-4 dual-threat QBs in there that we won't even look at, I'm sure.

Ohio_Cane

I just watched a couple 5 min highlights of each Olsen and Hackenburg as Juniors.

I've gotta say, I'm more impressed with Hackenburg. Quicker release, better arm strength. This kid can throw the out route as a Junior in HS better than Jacory could as a Senior in college. (I know, that's not saying too much, but still)

Saw Hackenburg heave one 65 yards, with what seemed like little effort.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 14, 2012 at 02:52 PM

Hackebburg

School: Fork Union Military Academy
Size: 6-4, 210
Stats: Hackenberg threw for 2,164 yards and 20 touchdowns with 16 interceptions while completing 171 of 341 passes.
Strengths: Hackenberg has as much potential as any quarterback in the 2013 class. He's a big, strong quarterback that has one of the most explosive arms in the country. Hackenberg is very comfortable out of the shotgun in three or four wide receiver sets. His offense is all about making quick reads and getting the ball out of his hands on his first or second read.

We are also looking at 3 star out of Carol City a school we have not seen a lot of talent out of in years, Akeem Jones. He is a 6'3 200 lbs dual treat guy, will be on the 7 on 7 circuit this spring and was at our last Junior day.

Also Kurt Benkert out of teh Ft Myers area. he grew up an FSU fan. He is about 6'3 and 200 also and has a live arm, places the ball well. He also punts pretty good too. He has gone to 2 of our camps as well.

When you have 5 guys on the roster not all will ever start for you or even raelly provide quality depth, You go for your top Targets Olsen and Hackenberg but if you can't land them sometimes these other guys work out but if they dont they can play other positions like WR for AKeem Jones or Punter for Benkert.

Texascane

Need another Texas QB...we have Dewey but if you take a look where the really good college Qb's come from it's Texas HS football...Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin, Derron Thomas (Oregon), Andy Dalton, Kevin Kolb, Christian Ponder, Matt Stafford, Case keenum, Jarret Lee, Vince Young, Colt McCoy...not too high on Florida QB's...

CaneRock

To hell with all these "Oh, He's a dual threat", or, "Oh, He's a Pro-Style" QB labels, just give me a damn kid that can MOVE THE STICKS and SCORE SOME DAMN TOUCHDOWNS!

Golden and staff would be FOOLS to turn their noses up at a QB prospect because said prospect is blessed with the ability to run.

And if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Teddy Bridgewater the very first prospect that Golden went after...

Six

Texascane - I'll take signal callers from the state of Texas any day of the week over any Florida QBs ... certain states are known for producing particular players at a certain position - Texas is a QB breeding ground hands down

Who would you say is the best QB to come from the state of Florida in the past 11 years as opposed to the best QB to come from Texas in that same time span

Whoever it is, they'd beat the Florida QB easily .. and the Florida QB would probably be Tebow

Dante Cullpepper is laughing at you. The '99 Vikings were one of the great NFL teams never to make a Super Bowl and Dante was a better ground threat and infinity better throwing the ball.

Texascane

OGV,

I think the criteria from SIX was "last 11 years"...Culpepper doesn't count...but you made his point...

Texascane

...as I thought about it...has The U ever had a decent QB from Florida?

orange 'n green in the vein

Texas, you're right, he stacked the question and I skimmed right over the qualifier. In that case I'll take Geno Smith or Denard Robinson over Teblow, same reasoning as Culpepper. I'd even take Thad Lewis as a QB but as a FB taking snaps have to concede Teblow to you by the nose of a football.

SJMPARMAN

Craig Erickson from Palm Beach County was a pretty good quarterback at Miami but that does take us back to the late 1980's. Before that, probably the other QBs that were local who competed were Mike Rodrigue and Mark Richt. Richt lost the battle although he split time, on a 40-60 basis, with Rodrigue. There have been more busts than hits. Kenny Kelly, Ethnic Sands, and Jacory Harris to name just a few. There have been several Miami area QBs that were recruited who never saw a down of college ball.

I think Florida high school football is just a different breed. Because there is tremendous speed at skill positions, high school coaches haven't needed to have the gun slinger to win. A 4.5 guy who can run and doesn't fumble offers greater job security for most high school coaches. Some of that is changing of course, as teams employ more spread offenses but basically Florida high school clock timing rules favor more conservative offenses.

Six

Happy Val-Lin-tines Day .. kid did it again

OGV - how is that a stacked question

Whether he's a FB playing QB or not, Tebow is probably the most successful college QB ever in Florida, that is from the state of Florida ... and I'm the furthest from being any kind of a Tebow fan when it comes to his QB skills

Daunte had 3 good years in Minnesota out of his 7 there

Denard Robinson won't be a NFL QB, I don't think Geno Smith will either. Geno might get drafted in the late rounds or picked up as a UFA - hell, if Dolphins were dumb enough to draft Pat White in the 2nd Round, then Geno has hope. Has Thad Lewis even taken a snap with the Browns?

Andrew Luck ... Robert Griffin 3rd ... Andy Dalton ... Kevin Kolb ... Christian Ponder ... Matt Stafford ... Colt McCoy ... Case Keenum ... all > than any QB from the state of Florida in the past how many years?

Has there ever even been a QB from the state of Florida more successful in the NFL than a QB from the state of Texas?

Guarantee money that there hasn't been. I will absolutely match any amount of money put up by anyone that there hasn't been at all

For any QB from the state of Florida in the NFL, I will name a QB from the state of Texas that is better

For that matter, same goes for the state of California - for any QB from the state of Florida, I will name a QB from the state of California that is infinitely better

It would be a completely loaded bet if I said from the state of PA, that wouldn't even be fair

Florida is definitely not known for the QB position

Six

Texascane - don't forget Chase Daniel either from Southlake Carroll, he put up some really nice numbers at Mizzou

"Andrew Luck ... Robert Griffin 3rd ... Andy Dalton ... Kevin Kolb ... Christian Ponder ... Matt Stafford ... Colt McCoy ... Case Keenum ... all > than any QB from the state of Florida in the past how many years?"

Uh, I've got news for you, if you're counting pure hardware accumulation, the FB taking snaps from center has more than that entire list COMBINED at the college level. Your premise doesn't hold there already. We'll see what happens with Shoelace, if Vick can pretend to know an NFL playbook, Robinson just might actually figure it out from under center even with the lack of prototype size these next few years. Somebody will take a flyer on Smith in the mid to late rounds coming up here, especially if he can put up numbers flying 9000 round trip miles in a tougher conference top to bottom this year.

Nice article, Would be cool if we could reach out and interview the guy, maybe not specifics but just something a lil more in depth of what he is doing, what he might do different then others, and then of course what he likes about UM and it's players he has seen through the years.

Apparently a few of our Canes Streeter, Miller, Vernon are training with him and are looking good.

Turns out that Old School may be able to join us also at the Festival IF his travel plans all work out to be in Central Florida around that time.

More to follow...

Cool beans

Soup I was thinking we should do some articles about "pipeline schools"

We could reach out to the STA's the Plant's the Centrals and MNW and Miramar's and get some #'s about how many D1 kids NFL'ers and whatnot, put it together in an article talk about why it is so important to cultivate these schools and help them out. You look at Just 5 schools

1. STA
2. Central
3. Plant
4. Miramar
5. MNW

Just those 5 schools put out about 100 D1 kids a year. As a program we are only going to take about 18-20 kids most years, if you took the top 8-10 from these 5 schools every year you will have the most talented Roster in the country. There are a lot of angles to look at this from but just those facts are staggering and the fact that Miami has made major inroads with schools we used to not even be allowed in the door speaks volumes to What kind of Coach Al Golden is, not to mention what kind of momentum we have going forward as a program.

Granted the NFL values 40 times over football skills too often. But TB3 is a decent football player, he made some plays for us and can play in the NFL, but he has PLENTY of flaws in his game. He does not have good hands, does not high point the ball well. Does not run good routes, if he did not run 4.2 ish he would be flippin burgers right now. He is fast but not fast enough to be a track guy and he can play football but his skill set it not elite. He can always work hard and get better, if his hands and route running improve he could get to a Desean Jackson type level.

There are very many fast guys in every NFL training camp that do not make a roster. Cory Nelms was a better track guy then Travis Benjamin and alot bigger and he is struggling to stay on an NFL roster. Benjamin does not have an NFL body and lacks skills.

With all that said I hope he makes a roster and gets a chance to improve, his speed is rare and if he can use that skill until he improves the rest he might have a nice lil NFL career.
