The streak is officially over.
Miami's impressive five game winning streak against ACC opponents came to an end in Tallahassee on Saturday afternoon as the 15th ranked Florida State Seminoles outlasted the Hurricanes to register a 64-59 victory over Miami.
The Hurricanes came out hot and fast and jumped out to an early six point lead but could not sustain that pace and trailed most of the second half. Still, the Hurricanes kept it close until the very end and trailed by only three points with under two minutes to play but could not get any closer than that as time ran out on their comeback hopes.
Miami (15-8, 6-4 ACC) failed to knock down a few critical fouls shots late in the game that could have produced a different outcome for coach Larranaga and his resilient players who showed no quit before a packed and raucous crowd at the Civic Center in the State Capital.
FSU's (17-7, 8-2 ACC) Bernard James scored 15 of his 18 points to propel the Seminoles to victory. James appeared to be quicker than Miami's Reggie Johnson who had a difficult time defending the paint and keeping up with James' athletic moves under the rim.
Miami's Kenny Kadji led the Hurricanes in scoring with 14 points and Durand Scott dropped in 12.
Johnson, who played so well in the Hurricanes huge upset of #5 Duke last week, could only manage two baskets on the day.
It doesn't get any easier as next up for the Hurricanes are the highly regarded and highly ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on 2/15/12 at The BankUnited Center in Coral Gables.
We urge you to show up at "The BUC" on Wednesday night and support your Miami Hurricanes!

I'm not sure which cult I'd have rather beaten, the "UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" cult at Duke or the stupid looking tomahawkers.

Reggie was getting stripped down low all game long. It was a sure TO today when he touched the ball. Guard play was worthless. Larkin needs to look to score more and the bigs need to learn to set some screens.

We got out rebounded in the crunch and shot poorly also...we had problems with their versatility under the rim.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | February 11, 2012 at 08:45 PM
Well, chalk it up to a bad game. Several months ago, with RJs injury, and D.Jones suspension, sniffing 5th place in the ACC was a REMOTE possibility AT BEST.
Despite that, we only lost by 5 to possibly the 2nd best team in the ACC, the same team that blew NC out of the same building.
I'm proud of this team, I like what Coach L is doing...

Damn I'm mad we lost. But it's growing pains and we will only get better and better.

NCAA investigation update:
Nevin Shapiro rants from prison;
UM optimistic
SUNDAY BUZZ COLUMN
Barry Jackson
As he sits behind a computer in a New Orleans prison, the rage still boils inside Nevin Shapiro.
The angry e-mails this winter paint the picture of a man determined to destroy the UM football program. But UM remains optimistic he won’t be nearly as successful as he claims he will be.
“The public is going to hate me worse in the next coming months,” Shapiro, serving a 20-year sentence for a Ponzi scheme, wrote in numerous e-mails over the past few months. “It’s going to be severe and catastrophic. My feelings are getting inflamed and I’m going to pop off pretty soon with regards to them and the NCAA. I’m coming for them both [UM and former players] and I’m going to be successful.
“I’m taking that program down to Chinatown and the former players and links to that program. Why? Because the U.S. government lined up 47 former players to testify against me in open court if I went to trial. That in itself is motivation to shove it up their collective [butts].”
Nobody at UM believes Shapiro when he claims “UM is getting the death penalty or damn close to it.” The NCAA isn’t commenting on its investigation, which began last March, but here’s what people are saying, including UM administrators and Board of Trustee members:

"Former assistant football coach Joe Pannunzio, now at Alabama, said he would do nothing to implicate UM, according to a friend, though one active player told the NCAA that Pannunzio was to blame for taking him to Shapiro.More problematic is Louisville assistant Clint Hurtt, who was implicated by several players for providing lodging during recruiting trips."
SHOCKING.
SHOCKING.
...
Shocked yet?
Didn't think so.

It seems more than a little crazy that the actual wrongdoers get off, while the new regime gets the axe. Ohio State's a bit of a different beast, because Tressel was fired because of upcoming sanctions.
Pete Carroll leaves town, Lane Kiffin gets the punishment.
Hocutt and Hurtt leave. Golden comes in and UM gets the ban.
Just searching for some sense here... where there is none to be found.

The Miami Hurricanes had just 24 sacks in 2011 and 2009.
They had only 31 sacks in 2007 and 2008.
There were two seasons they recorded 50 or more sacks. Name those years?

I'm guessing a season with Daniel Stubbs was one of them. He went insane right? So sometime in the 80s.
...p.s., good luck to Jelani but if he gets 0 sacks and is all-around a solid gritty player I'll be happy.

I don't like random guesses but I guess I'll go with '86 and '87.

In 1990, Russel Maryland had a monster year with 96 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Those numbers earned Maryland the Outland Trophy—an award given to the best interior lineman in the country—and a spot on the All-American team.
He also won the Jack Harding Most Valuable Player Award, presented by the team.
He would end his Miami career with 279 tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks.
And Jelani Hamilton says on Twitter he is gonna get 17 in his FRESHMAN season? LOL
Posted by: 86Cane | February 12, 2012 at 08:49 PM
SOUP, to be fair, I don't think he expects to actually achieve that, but I love that he's setting his own bar very high. Goals are a wonderful thing to have. I actually praise the kid for having those types of goals, no matter how lofty or unlikely they are.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 12, 2012 at 08:53 PM
Let him shoot for the stars. He just might do it.If he gets 17 what will the rest of the defense do?Heres to hoping!

Nothing wrong with Hamilton saying that, gotta set goals......
As they taught me at Miami Horace Mann middle "shoot for the moon. If u fall short , you'd at least be among the stars"........was a rough school, but I rember that banner...lol lol

Realistic goals I don't have a problem with. Nobody wants these kids to succeed more than I do but U gotta be at least somewhat realistic. Fantasy land trash talking is what I take issue with.
That is the FALSE swagger that has plagued this team for years. U haven't even earned a starting position yet. You haven't even played a game yet. You have not even stepped on Greentree field with a helmet with a U on it.
Now before your first Spring practice U are gonna set the single season record for sacks at UM as Freshman and win the Outland trophy?
Who says? U think this is HS? Do U?
Have U lined up against anybody that is 6-8 and 350 pounds or muscle and talent and experience? Have U punked anyobody in practice on the UM OL? Have U dominated and punished somebody like Henderson, Bunch or even a Freshman like Flowers in a Texas drill?
Well if U think this is going to be a cakewalk then U got another thing coming.
Russell Maryland won the Outland trophy with 10 sacks in 1990 and had 20 for his CAREER.
Now U are gonna say U are gonna get 17 sacks in your FRESHMAN season? And Howard and Bush are gonna get 15 picks each right?
Give it a rest and SHOW us and stop talking about it! Real swagger is based on what U do on the field, not what U say on Twitter.

I guess I should respond since I am the biggest Larranaga supporter here. I didn't get to see the loss at FSU, as it wasn't broadcast here. I was disappointed though to hear the result. This is an NCAA tournament talented team. I wish they would believe it. FSU is talented but no better than Miami. Why they didn't go up there and dominate is a mystery to me.
The team really put themselves in a hole with this loss. I would say it almost makes it impossible to get to the dance without beating Maryland, and then either beating UNC at home, or making it incredibly close. Of course, a great performance in the ACC tournament could make up for it but this was a really bad loss.
I do want to point out that focusing so much on kids potential as signees contributes to the false swagger. The 2008 class was so highly covered that they thought it did not matter how they performed during their four years here. Look how all of them declared for the NFL even though they didn't perform at NFL standards in college. Then look at the past 5 blogs of the current recruits here. We annoint these kids NFL ready and they haven't played a down in college.
This infatuation with signees placates certain segments of Miami fans, who follow twitter and speculate where 17 and 18 year old kids may sign. That is fine. I understand the interest. But can I insert the names Willie Williams, Bryce Brown, Patrick Peterson, and others as to why none of that matters.
It is total BS. According to the 2008 class, we should have won the national championship this year. How does 6-6 sit with you? Can we please require these kids to perform beform before we annoint any of them champions??? I want to throw up every time I read this blog about these kids potential. I have read this so many times before in the last 4 years.

If big reg comes back and I think he will because of his injury, next year we will be far better with Kanji and Reg in the middle and Larkins with a year under his belt.

Yeah, a lot of top prospects announce early these days, FLA is expected to get him, anywhere else would be a big surprise.
In CANE RB news, Duke Johnson announced he is not weighing 189.8 and has a goal of 195 for fall. That is impressive, seeing the kid in person up close a couple months ago he is lean and mean, I could not add bead weight if he tried. @ 195 I could expect him to handle 7-10 carries a game next year.
Rayshawn Jenkins said he is @ 210 and running a 4.46. He is a big safety and a great athlete. Dare I say athletically similiar to a freshman Sean Taylor. Both are big kids and fast and both played RB and safety in HS.

Be careful of those early comparisons. Let's wait a while before we do that.
As long as they back it up and don't say anything inflammatory, let them talk. They'll adjust. Sometimes, one has to learn hard lessons.
