While many Miami Hurricane fans have been focusing on Al Golden's Summer Football Camps held at Greentree Field on the beautiful campus of the University of Miami some may have missed the fact that there is another exciting Summer sports camp going on in Coral Gables just around the corner and down Ponce De Leon Boulevard at the BankUnited Center.
Last week more than 100 campers participated in the sold out first session of the 2012 Jim Larranaga basketball Camp at the University of Miami.
Registration is currently being accepted for the final four sessions of the five-day camps. Students in grades 1-7 can register for Camps 3 July 9-13, Camp 4 July 23-27 or Camp 5 July 29-Aug. 3. Camp 6 is Aug. 6-10 and is for students grades 1-12.
Hurricane basketball players and staff are on hand to coach the campers in drills and games, but also to be role models for the youth.
“UM players are heroes to these kids,” said Mike Summey, UM’s Director of Basketball Operations and Camp Director. “To have current players act as coaches and spend time with the kids is a great
opportunity for both current and young Canes.”
For $285 per session, kids receive daily individual instruction, game play, all-you-can-eat lunch, a camp t-shirt and a camp basketball. In addition, there are tremendous guest lecturers, many awards given with each age group and a championship series played on the final day.
The camps are held in The Fieldhouse on the Coral Gables campus, adjacent to the BankUnited Center, the home of the Hurricanes. Sessions run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day. Children of UM employees may receive a $25 discount, while discounts are also available for groups of six or more.
For more information, please visit www.hurricanesports.com or contact Mike Summey in the Miami men's basketball office at (305) 284-6062.

More impressed with this coaching hire than the doofus in Lubbock's MAC-man pick for the football team to date. Of course, it's way easier to get a basketball team turned around in a year or two than it is a football team, admittedly.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | June 19, 2012 at 02:18 AM
Getting less and less impressed with ole Sully up in hogtown?
0-2 and BBQ yet again for the choking gagging gators.
Consensus number 1 preseason team. Number 1 for most of the season. Number one seed for the CWS. Thought by most to have the most talent in the nation, if not, then top 5 at least. What do they do? Knocked out by Kent State.
Mock me for saying so, I'll take our 4 CWS titles, even if you call them ancient history. That's why you win championships: they never expire!
Now I realize our team is at a crossroads and has been a poor performer for several years, so something has to change. I'm not happy with it, and neither is any canes fan. But I'm just glad to see all the gator/Sully come to an end for this year. All they've proven is that they can choke with talent.
Now back to our regularly scheduled football program and 9 win season (fingers and toes crossed)

Golden on the radio. Some new things, some old hat:
-Progress in high schools, specifically in Dwyer (reading between the lines, there are still issues to be worked out)
- Stephen Morris, Ryan Williams stand out on the dedication front
- Henderson's weight loss is solid; Perryman's size is well improved
- Golden sounds like he needs some sleep
- Rose doesn't deviate from his sophomoric form, obsesses over Henderson
- Golden speaks of postseason inclusion, wants to make regular season matter more when driving towards the tournament
- The camps are community builders, educators, inclusive, and organized
- Golden: Camps > Combines because of evaluation
- Stargazing (40 times) is irrelevant
- UM's own evaluations are paramount

Jon Bastian (free article):
Son of former Cane to camp at UM
Quincy Wilson, cornerback for Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) University School, has nine offers from some of the top programs in the country.
“I have Auburn, LSU, Maryland, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida and Purdue,” Wilson said. He is still waiting for an offer from his childhood favorite, the University of Miami.
“I like Miami because I grew up a Cane all of my life,” Wilson said. “I have always been to their games and my father played there. I am going to their camp next week. I am looking to do what I do and hopefully get an offer from them.”
The 2014 prospect named some of the colleges recruiting him hard. “Florida, Auburn, LSU, West Virginia and there are a couple more. I took a visit to Florida and Auburn already. I have offers from both of them.”
Quincy’s father, Chad, played defensive back for the Hurricanes from 1992-94. The former ‘Cane isn’t putting any pressure on his son to play for his Alma Mater.
“He is all for whatever I am, what I want,” Wilson said of his father. He went on to describe what he does best at corner.
“I read the quarterback well and I have good jams on receivers.”

Hearing the name Quincy Wilson reminded me of a local phenom that I was friends with from Weirton, WV, just up the road from me. He went on to play at WVU. If anyone remembers his significance to the Canes, here it is:
(It hurt me to be friends with a guy that almost knocked out the Canes LOL)
"The Run"
"The Run" took place in 2003, when West Virginia played the #3 ranked Miami Hurricanes. Losing in the 4th quarter, West Virginia needed to score fast. Rasheed Marshall took the snap and threw a screen to Wilson, who broke a tackle and took off down the sideline. Halfway down the sideline, Wilson knocked down Miami safety Brandon Meriweather and jumped over him while staying in bounds to score and give the Mountaineers the lead late. Despite efforts, Miami still won the game.
Horrible quality, but this is it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHr2DbCBHws

Man, talk about ironic, I was just reading an old SFSS article that talked about Chad Wilson. And if I'm not mistaken, I think this comment was made prior to UW whooping our asses in the OB, and breaking that 58 game win streak that we had:
____________________________________________
Wilson delivers a shot
A sports columnist has infiltrated UM's ranks. Cornerback Chad Wilson writes for The Hurricane, UM's student newspaper. In Friday's issue, he talked some trash, writing this about the Arizona State fans who witnessed UM's 47-10 rout of their Sun Devils: "Midway through the fourth quarter, an orange landed on the field, missing me by 2 feet. I was amazed that Arizona State started Jake Plummer at quarterback when their most accurate passer was sitting high up in the stands."
Wilson wrote that he is looking foward to Washington's arrival next Saturday.
"We're having Huskies for dinner. Bow wow."
Wilson also is writing game program profiles for UM's sports information office. He's a senior majoring in broadcast journalism."

"He went on to play at WVU. If anyone remembers his significance to the Canes, here it is:"
Horrible. I have to hear about that nonsense every month or so here in the heart of Zero-Title Country. It starts with a wide-eyed giggle, the kind that potheads give you when they beat Dorito's. Then I hear about how cool it was, the great history of the Mountaineers, and how I should change my life and watch Hee Haw.
Then comes the polite reminder of the final score of that game. The prescription is only temporary, however, for they return in one month... like a bad insurance salesman. It's cool that you're friends with him, though. If he ever comes cruising by here, they may elect him king.

WURD ON DA SKREETZ IZ...
1. Brissett did not come to Miami because on an UV he went by a party where ballahs were, which by the way all but 1 has gone ghost mode. He didnt like what he saw, told Al and momz bout it and thats why he aint here. I had to go back to Dec of '11 to get that vmail/email I hit foolies with. What up CEO, you aint got goons steppin their game up lol.
2. One way it happened and sure I said it was that Coach Will pimp limped his azz into a crib and asked [a player] how his momz been doin. Yah, sure its a smart question to ask but when the momz is no longer living its stupid as f to be askin. How the f a coach really wantin a ballah and not know that. Thats part of the reason a current Miami ballah would not speak with him on the phone and ignored that f when he limped his azz on HS campus.
3. Names of current ballah and HS will stay with me down here. No need to bring them up just cause Will is an azzhole. Just another reason to HATE.
4. Whoever the f the peep makin the statement of cheerin for FSU unless they ballin against Miami needs a serious b!tch slappin. Aint no real Hurricane fan ever goin to say some sh$# like that.

High school recruiting ratings are like IMDB in reverse. Instead of seeing the product and reviewing it... you review the product before you see it. Putting it in that context, it's insane.
- Because Kelly Clarkson won American Idol, "From Justin To Kelly" will be excellent.
- Because Bryce Brown is a football genius in Kansas, he is a 5-star and will be a program changing back.
- Ang Lee made a great movie in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Therefore, "The Hulk" will be a wonderful film.
- Aldarius Johnson won a championship and royally kicked butt on Friday night. Therefore, he will be a transcendent receiver at UM.
- We know nothing about Morgan Freeman and Frank Darabont. Therefore, the Shawshank Redemption will be terrible.
- Because Tyler Horn was the 123rd ranked offensive tackle in the 2007 ESPN rankings, he will not contribute to UM.
- Halle Berry (Catwoman). Prince Kent (2009). It is madness.
There are no absolutes in entertainment (and yes, sports is entertainment). Think about that when stargazing.
But hard work, thoughtful evaluation, excellent staffing, relentless recruiting, and Canespace? The needed recipe.

University of Miami legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly will be recognized as a recipient of the Jefferson Award, one of the nation's top honors for community service and volunteerism.
Kelly will join 16 other recipients from around the country at a Washington, D.C., gala June 19 to receive the 40th annual Jefferson Awards, known as the "Nobel Prize for Public Service." Alongside Hockey Hall of Fame center Pat LaFontaine and IndyCar racer Charlie Kimball, Kelly will be honored in the category Outstanding Athlete in Service and Philanthropy.
"I feel privileged to be able to do the work I am doing," Kelly said. "I would never have been able to do it without a team effort, whether it was football, family or charity. I am very blessed."
Two weeks after he announced his retirement from professional football in 1997, Kelly and his wife Jill welcomed a son named Hunter. Several months later, Hunter was diagnosed with Krabbe Leukodystrophy, an inherited fatal nervous system disease. Kelly and his wife started Hunter's Hope Foundation that same year in honor of Hunter, whose life expectancy was no more than two years but lived until he was 8½. The Kellys bring encouragement and hope to families in the midst of suffering by: funding research necessary to treat and cure Krabbe Disease and other devastating leukodystrophies, increasing newborn screening standards to obtain early detection and treatment for all treatable diseases and much more. Kelly also gives back to disabled and disadvantaged youth in Western New York through Kelly for Kids, a foundation that has distributed more than $4 million to local children's charities.
"During the years I played in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills, community service and reaching out to others was such an important part of my role with the team," Kelly said.

Look at these two DUMASS bozos, ya'll go all the way to Omaha,Nebraska to SHOPLIFT!
Florida State designated hitter John Holland was arrested Monday night on charges of shoplifting from Scheels sporting goods store at Village Pointe. John Holland, 19, and his brother Steven Holland, 23, were suspected of switching price tags of items from the store in order to purchase the goods for $12 less, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
The brothers were booked Monday night at 6:03 pm in Douglas County Correctional but later released on bonds at 8:06 pm. Holland appeared before a court Tuesday morning and Holland pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of damaging property. He received a municipal ticket for his guilty plea and paid a $50 fine.
John Holland remains a part of the Florida State baseball team, but he has been suspended indefinitely for his actions. “The young man in question, John Holland, made a serious error in judgment," said head coach Mike Martin. "Due to a violation of team rules, he has been suspended indefinitely. The university will have no further comment on the situation.”
The charge will not remain on Holland's record and the case is closed. It is not certain if he will remain in Omaha with the team as they compete in the College World Series.
We will provide further updates as they become available.

Crocs have been to Omaha the past 3 years in a row
Crocs have knocked the Canes out of the post-season how many times since Sully has been there
What's the Canes record against the Crocs since Sully has been there? 6-15 since 2008, O'Sullivan's first year ... the Canes have lost to the Crocs 8 consecutive times to date
Last I checked, his squad ended the Canes season 3 years in a row
No other team in Florida has as many titles as the Canes - zero combined - but it's not exactly something to puff the chest out about when the Canes suck against UiF since he got there
Here's a difference -
Canes got oustcored by Stony Brook (who got absolutely blasted in Omaha) and Mizzou State 22-4 ... at home
Crocs lost to the back-to-back defending champ (and a coach that Paul Dee was considering for the Canes job in Ray Tanner) and also not a shabby Kent State team (who made it to Omaha .. mighty Miami didn't)
Let's see as well - the 2 years prior to Sully getting there, the Crocs went
2006 - 28-28
2007 - 29-30
He gets there, the Crocs go
2008 - 34-24
2009 - 42-22
2010 - 47-17
2011 - 53-19 (most wins ever in school history)
2012 - 47-20
But nah, what he and his staff have done up in Gainesville isn't impressive at all - not exactly like they walked into what Morris walked into when he got to Miami. Brad Kelley didn't leave Morris what Pat McMahon did up in Jortsville for O'Sullivan
I'd rather have my team get there and have a chance to either win/lose than not even make it there at all
It's also not like the ACC is as powerhouse of a conference in baseball that some people think. The SEC (exactly like in football)
1990 - present .. 14 SEC teams have been in the CWS Championship game
1990 - present .. 4 ACC teams have been in the CWS Championship game
Pretty good chance an SEC team will win it again this year
I don't want to see either FSU or UiF win a title, but I'm also not a blind fan or sports fan to realize who has a damn good program on the rise while another aging beauty queen should realize her shiny tiara isn't what it used to be

LETS GO HEAT!!!'
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | June 19, 2012 at 10:33 PM
Heat go up 3/1 series over. Patrick is a big kid, lives in my parents old neighborhood. He is about a 4.4 kid as a freshman. Is a legit 6"1. His teammamate is the kicker featured here recently

This is the most cheating I have ever seen in a playoff game. The heat is getting away wit murder

Who said OKC will not win another game in the series?

Blaming the refs is a crutch. I don't like it, or ever do it.
Difference is, Heat are a driving team, which draws fouls. OKC is a jump shooting team, which doesn't.

Six...Please read this comment with an open mind. U know we are long time friends and I mean NO disrespect at all.
We get it that you like the Gators coaching staff and players but your love affair with ALL things Gators baseball has gone on and on and on and has has really gotten annoying.
Posting it once or twice is cool, we get your point and acknowledge that you know baseball and your facts are correct. But really, do U think fans on a Canes blog want to read that over and over and over again? Posting it once is fine, but posting it all the time and even when the Gators LOSE is just WRONG.
Thanks for listening, I hope U understand and once again I mean NO disrepect.

PS - Fouls called for:
Heat - 18
OKC - 20
What refs?
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | June 20, 2012 at 12:13 AM
Willie Will...U do realize that fans from BOTH teams think that they NEVER get the calls and that the refs ALWAYS favor the other team right?
U can argue refs all night and it will get you nowhere. At the end of the game the last three possesions had nothing to do with the refs at all.
I'll say it again: Basketball is a game of LUCK. The lucky teams makes 1-3 more shots at the end of the game than the other.
That's Basketball.

Why even bother playing or watching an entire game? Just play five 3 minute games each night and take the best of three and count it as ONE game?
If you ask me both teams are very equal. The Heat is just slightly better at this point and getting luckier and winning at the end that's all. That was true with Dallas last year also when they beat the Heat in the Finals.
There really is not much difference between the teams really and even Heat fans prolly can accept that over the next 3 years OKC will prolly be better than the Heat.

Don't get mad at me SOUP, but Six's rants are pretty entertaining and informative. Before Six, the last time I gave a hoot about baseball was when I coached my kids little league team. Just my two pieces of copper on it...

Expecting Six not to perform the Heimlich maneuver instinctively when someone points out yet another year of his favorite skipper keeping the choking alive for the turds' diamond nine is like expecting 4-Real not to have a conniption when some high school rising senior with five snowflakes next to his name gives a non-binding verbal commitment to a team floating stacks of cash as a signing incentive during the summer, it's just not realistic.

Ohio,
Just because you drive doesn't mean you are getting fouled. Then look at how many times Westbrook drove into the lane and he only went to the foul line 3 times that's ridiculous. Anytime lebron drives its almost guaranteed a foul will be called. Just face it the nba wants Lebron to win one. Durant is not committing half the fouls that he's being called for. The thunders players were getting held and pushed all night wit no calls. And how do you explain how lebron committing four fouls on one play at the end of game two???
Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | June 20, 2012 at 12:59 AM
86,
Heat fans around here are even admitting that the heat are getting all the calls
Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | June 20, 2012 at 01:01 AM
86 - no offense taken at all, completely understand. I hate even bringing it up, but it's a fact that we as Canes fans need to acknowledge b/c 2001 is getting further and further away by the minute
It's no different than bragging about the last football title won ... over a decade ago
Gotta also point out though that if a Cane fan is going to rant on about how bad a team is (in any sport), then at least make sure that our beloved Canes haven't sucked against that team for the past 4 years ....
B/c that just looks foolish
I can actually put a halt to it
... unlike OGV who can't even tap the brakes gently in the slightest from his full throttle drive of complaining about everything/anything Al Golden
Posted by: Six | June 20, 2012 at 02:41 AM
Six...thanks for understanding, I don't want to create any blog drama, just wanted U to be aware. No harm, no foul. And like U fairly indicated we all have our issues.
4-Real is the recruiitng panic button guy.
OGV is the ultimate Golden doubter.
And CGNC is just way too smart and pretty.
Some issues are just easier to deal with than others. LOL
