In the second feature of our "Five Questions" series of feature articles Canespace caught up with Gary Ferman from Canesport. Ferman, who it seems has been covering the Miami Hurricanes football team since the school's inaugural season in 1926, is widely recognized as the senior statesmen when it comes all things orange and green.
Of course you can find always find Ferman and the Canesport site at: www.canesport.com .
Gary has been around long enough to see the good, the bad and the ugly days of Hurricane football and has covered and interviewed many of the great players and coaches who have passed through Coral Gables over the years. Canesport's coverage of the Hurricanes is unsurpassed and the effort and resources they devote to publishing their web site and magazine is amazing.
We recently caught up with Ferman, and always the good sport, he agreed to take a few minutes to talk to us in spite of his busy pre-season schedule covering Fall practice at UM.
Here are our five questions with Gary Ferman of Canesport:
Canespace: Stephen Morris won the starting QB role on this team. Do you think he is really ready to lead this team to victory in 2012 or is simply the best available player at his position at UM right now? We all know that it is only a matter of time before fan favorite Gray Crow is named the starting QB at UM but based on what you have seen or know is Morris going to have an excellent or just average 2012 season for the Hurricanes?
Canesport: I am a big believer in Stephen Morris, thought he should have been the QB last year. If you look at the Maryland game, once you got past the communications issues they were having getting plays in, it really wasn’t that bad. If it wasn’t a conservative game plan, he might have thrown for 350-400 yards, Morris has shown what he can do and should be much better this year as a junior. I absolutely do not feel it is just a matter of time before one of the freshmen get the job. I don’t think either of those guys are even close and they will have Kevin Olsen to contend with next year.
Canespace: How many Freshmen do you see getting some serious playing as the year goes on? Name some Freshmen (True or RS) who you think will play in 2012 and maybe even start by season's end?
Canesport: It looks like at least 15-20 are going to play, which is staggering. Personally, I would like to see more redshirt unless they are on first or second team.
Canespace: The Legends of the Fall selection process is an annual ritual at Canespace. The bloggers select one player on offense and one on defense that they think will have a spectacular, break-out or legendary season each year. This year the most selected players were of course QB Stephen Morris and LB Denzel Perryman. Apart from those two obvious selections which two players do you think will show up and show out this season? In addition please also select ONE Freshman player and ONE assistant or position coach who you think will be difference makers for the 2012 UM football team?
Canesport: Philip Dorsett on offense and Ladarius Gunter on defense if I can’t pick Perryman. Duke Johnson as the Freshman selection and Micheal Barrow as the coaching choice.
Canespace: Will the offense carry the defense or will the defense carry the offense for the 2012 Miami Hurricanes? Which is the stronger side of this team and what is the strongest position?
Canesport: I think the offense is stronger and that the WR position is probably strongest on the team.
Canespace: OK, finally it is time to put you on the spot: I need your overall season record prediction for the 'Canes this season? Just give it to us straight!
Canesport: 8-4

Good article. I like the 8-4 prediction better than the 4-8 prediction. I think this team may surprise and do very well. No I am not predicting 12-0 but 8 or 9 wins would not surprise me. 4-8 would definitely surprise and disappoint me.

Great stuff 86. Great stuff from Ferman. 8-4 sounds about right My hope is that our Canes can at least win the ACC Coastal, perhaps the ACC, and their bowl game.
Posted by: Tsully76 | August 22, 2012 at 10:37 PM
When it comes to the LOF picks and the record prediction, I agree with and respecd almost everything Gary Ferman said.
I didn't agree with anything that Brandon Adoi said.
I don't think I feel this way just because I am a die hard Canes fan. I genuinely believe that Golden is running a great program and he has developed some very good players.
After this weekend, the college football world will begin to see how far Golden has taken this program.
Posted by: BigWIndyCane-Forecast1 | August 22, 2012 at 10:42 PM
BigWindy...In a way I'm glad that Odoi went first with his 4-8 prediction just to get that bad taste in our mouths outta the way. That prediction prolly JOLTED many here back into reality.
If you look at all of the "experts" and their predictions Ferman is prolly being a little optimistic at 8-4 although many here feelk that's about right.
For the record CGNC and I are sticking with our 9-3 predictions until we are right regardless of how long that may take. LOL
Posted by: 86Cane | August 22, 2012 at 10:48 PM

top seven reasons we will be National Champs before Gas hits to 4.00 a gallon
7 Kyle Wright,
Better suited for Tractor Supply ads
6 Bryce Brown,
Best highschool running back in a decade, holds two major programs for ransom then hooks up with his brother at a third school, amasses a staggering 476 yds in college football.
5 the MNW posse,
includes the greatest future HOF Miami receiver Lamar Thomas and Andre Johnson had ever seen, turn out to be really good high school players that didn't realize kids in college never heard of them
4 Jacory Harris,
can't miss Heisman winner by his soph year, turns out to be all around nice guy with gently used purple suit gathering dust in his closet
3 Smash and Dash, the absolute 1 2 punch that could overcome any amount of interceptions a qb could throw in a game, Lamar decides a dash for cash while you still got wheels is part of his process.
2 Art Kehoe, The heart and soul of Cane football past will single handedly drive the mighty Canes to the NC, turns out old guys in floppy hats screaming their azz off can't run into the game and remind guys to block.
1 Al Golden, Gas is about $ 3.75 right now

Canespace Ring of Honor worthy lol material there solar.
Man, I love that Ferman pushes Morris as the more worthy starter last year then proceeds to damn him with the faintest of praise, "well once you get past the fact he had problems getting the play in from the sideline." WTF? That's like the first important thing a QB has to do and it's the easiest part of the job Gary!
"He could have thrown for a country mile's worth of yards in that game if the game-plan wasn't so conservative." Uh, Gary, he completed 19 passes against the worst FBS opponent on the schedule and didn't break 200 yards in the air thanks in part to the last INT TD return with the game on the line, Harris surpassed that game yardage total with less completions two times against FBS competition and led victories against two ranked teams the other two times he didn't reach that number of completions and didn't surpass that yardage total. But Morris is fantastic otherwise.
:/
I wish you had asked Ferman if Al would deserve a lifetime extension if he finishes 8-5 this year, that would have been freaking hilarious no matter what the answer was.

OGV,
When morris threw that first pick that streeter didn't fight for with the game on the line? What was he suppose to do not throw it and take a sack on 4th down????

Tropical Storm Isaac continues to move westward near the Caribbean Sea, although the storm became slightly weaker overnight.
Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft finds Tropical Storm Isaac slightly weaker and farther south.
According to Bay News 9 Meteorologist Juli Marquez, long-range models have the system near Florida by Monday of next week. Although the chances the storm will hit the Tampa Bay area still remain low, the prospect of a major storm arriving the same week as the Republican National Convention is creating some anxiety.
The center of Tropical Storm Isaac is located near latitude 15.4N 64.8W; About 225 miles SSE of San Juan; 315 miles ESE of Dominican Republic

I had to cover Andrew for a client, so I was on the scene a couple days after. Beyond all the homes destroyed, the single image that still sticks in my mind was the 2 x 4 with the square end that was picked up and blown through the middle of a thick tree trunk. It hung there 20 feet off the ground stuck tight with both ends protruding like a spear through a fish.

As for Dobard, he must be completely horrible from getting knocked down a star. After all, terrible schools like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and LSU offered him. So the people at Rivals must be right, and the Hurricane season has already entered oblivion because the 2013 class is down one star from one recruiting service. Therefore, it will further translate to the world as we know it shall cease to exist. Marriages shall end. Men will weep. Women will scream. God himself may come back and shake his head.
Sincerely,
Sarcasmo
P.S.: Dobard is exactly what we need. Great hands, great blocker, and a big body. I'll let Rivals eat crow (not Gray, CEO) while we giggle like schoolgirls.

I'm glad the Fermaster sees the De-line as the Herb does. We better get some pressure up front or as he states, Denzie P. and his cohorts could be in for a long year. The squat brothers Smith & Porter (ht)just aren't going to be the answer in the long run. Porter just can't catch a break. Servicable would be the word I use for dem twos. Grimble & Pierre, could be stars on the rise and Robinson could be a dark horse. The 3 freshman are just what they are, still physically maturing. The DE spot could be an albetros, with only Chick having seen any action at the spot. His Chicketts need to step up. The talent could be very good at this positon but time don't wait, so next year we should be loaded at this spot.
Al, Big Al, do you hear me, Hit the DE-LINE Hard With 4 of those 7 ships you have left. If I talk about it enough you're sure to hear me. Uh, 6'3 or above preferrably!
