Miami Hurricanes junior QB Stephen Morris has emerged as the No. 1 signal-caller on the post-scrimmage depth chart, head coach Al Golden announced Monday evening. Miami completed the first of two #CanesCamp scrimmages Sunday at the Greentree Practice Fields.
As a sophomore in 2011, Morris threw for 283 yards on 26-of-37 passing, including a season-high 195 yards in a start at Maryland. The Miami native, who underwent back surgery following the 2011 season, played in six games with four starts in 2010 as a true freshman. He threw for 1,240 yards
on 85-of-153 passing as a rookie and earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors after orchestrating a comeback win against Maryland, finishing with a career-high 286 yards.
In preparation for the 2012 season, the University of Miami will be hosting its annual BankUnited CanesFest on Sat., Aug. 18, from 4-7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center on the UM campus. Fans in attendance will have the chance to pick up the new 2012 Miami Football poster, receive autographs from Hurricane players and coaches, purchase season tickets, and much more.
Season and single-game tickets for the 2012 football season are available online, by phone at 1-800-GO-CANES (1-305-284-2263) or in-person at the Miami Athletics Ticket Office .

I love how we have flowers at Rt, dequan Ivery at dt and various freshman in the 2 deep. Im really gonna keep an eye on tracy Howard vs Brandon McGee. McGee reminds me Alot of van dyke..
Posted by: Laquinton | August 13, 2012 at 10:05 PM
This list is so refreshing! I didn't feel like this with cokers teams (I don't count 2001-2003 with Coker) or Shannons teams but I feel like this is the beginning of something great. Some of the weight that was holding Miami down is gone. I predict a hard fought year but I know "the process" is working. GO CANES! In Golden we trust!
Posted by: Panamacitycane | August 13, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Surprises on the Depth Chart:
Offense: Flowers at RT in place of #77 who has missed practice and hopefully will return soon to start or provide more depth.
Defense: DeQuan Ivery at DT, Armbrister at LB with LB Gabe Terry behind him (No red-shirt?) and Jimmy Gaines back in the middle with Raphael Kirby MIA?
Posted by: 86Cane | August 13, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Agree, 86- shocked that Ivery is doing so well. I don't like Gaines in the middle, I've seen that movie a few times, appreciate his fearlessness but the idea is to tackle the ball carrier, not just ram into the pulling guard at full speed every time. Flowers is going to be special, what we all thought Henderson might be.
Posted by: j.w. | August 13, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Well... Sorry to see that my defensive LOF, (Eddie Johnson), is NOT listed on the 2 deep. :(
Hopefully, this will spur him on to work even harder to make my LOF pick stand up.
Posted by: roachcane77 | August 13, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Is Kirby gonna rs ? I thought he was a good backup at mlb and armbrister starting olb over Gaines is saying something.. Mainly that Gaines is a bum.. Glenn cook ? Should be interesting . Im not gonna keep sticking up for Seantrel but Miamis season depends on a good starting 5 on the line .
Posted by: Laquinton | August 13, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Roach...U have not heard the last of Eddie Johnson and Raphael Kirby. They both had several mental errors in scrimmage #1. Look for that to change in scrimmage #2.
Those two boys are BIG, FAST and HUNGRY.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 13, 2012 at 10:21 PM
LQ...I expect to see both Kirby and Johnson to play some this year on defense and at the VERY least on special teams.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 13, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Yeah... I'm not giving up on EJ44 just yet.
From what I saw at the Bishop Verot scrimmage, he's a QB sack machine coming in hard from the edge!
He could be a "situational" game changer if given the chance.

Guys do not read into the depth chart, this is the 1st scrimmage Coach Golden has a Masters in Sports Psychology.
Posted by: Hassan | August 13, 2012 at 10:33 PM
I look around this depth chart and I see a lot of new names, which means a lot of you have been promoted above the guys who were here before you for a year or two.
One thing you know happened last year is Golden used the weekly depth chart to shake up a lot of players and play some mental games to see who responded how to getting shuffled up or down the chart. It'll be interesting to see how much movement there is between now and when the next one is released because we'll see who got the message being sent to them and who packed it in instead of picking it up.
Ivory at 1st team DT? I don't know what's more laughable, the fact that the lowest regarded freshman signing is sitting in the catbird seat or that apparently he now weighs in about 28 pounds less than what he was listed at in high-school?

I understand what Golden is TRYING to do with the whole depth chart manipulation thing but I think it gets tedious and tiring and loses its MOJO and becomes counter-productive after awhile.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 13, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Kelvin Cain ? Damn.. Some must have dropped a bomb in that practice
Posted by: Laquinton | August 13, 2012 at 10:52 PM
Oh and since I'm in the middle of a recover period for my workout tonight, I have to take the opportunity to not let this little gem slide from 86,
"U have NO idea what Golden will do at UM but yet U still predict the worse case scenario and attack him at every opportunity.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 13, 2012 at 11:21 AM"
I seem to remember getting a little flak from my evaluation of the hire as a C- for the program's situation when it was first announced and being told how Golden was just like his moniker, blah, blah, blah.
6-6 and a tied for fourth in the division finish later and somehow not being gung ho joe means you're personally attacking a guy who's career record is still four games under .500% for pointing out anything less than glowing praise for his body of work? Sorry, you're right, that's completely unassailable and if his winning percentage were his basis for his GPA he'd still be academically eligible, right?
Uh, not at Miami, (FL). On either count, actually.
I see the depth chart shenanigans as more of a feedback loop for Golden to find out who responds to that particular button pushing myself, so it'll continue to see who he can manipulate with it to respond. Back to the workout.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 13, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Ogv, I too was kinda lost at the hire of golden. I watch temple vs UCLA so I knew who he was a,program builder man. He is a great coach and motivator. Look at Streeter and Jacory last year. Look at how much bigger and stronger the team looks. Muschamp with better Florida team with a 3 time superbowl winning off coord wwnt 6-6 or 7-5 right. this year out of the gates against BC then kstate you will see a vast improvement in this team

Great stuff 86. This is an interesting depth chart. Is any Canespacers going to the Bethune Cookman game and also is any Canespacers doing Duffy's that Friday night or staying at the Hampton Inn besides myself.

I'll wait to look at who's starting till pre game of Boston College then I'll know who's really starting lol. Ivey over Porter LMAO!!!
Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | August 13, 2012 at 11:50 PM
Q, Muschump, who I considered an even worse hire for the situation he stepped into than Golden, went 7-6 with his teams' two return TD's being the difference in the bowl win over OSU for them. Weiss is also a few missed FG's in the Super Bowl away from being a part of this generation's version of the Vikings of the 70's and was a pretty bad college hand. Add in the fact Meyer went a whole game better than UM his last year and you can make a decent argument that Muschump actually did more with less than Golden did with less head coaching experience but honestly, call it a wash between comparing the two thanks to the NCAA mandated suspensions IMO.
I agree Golden's a good motivator and the multiple enumerated S&C gains speak for themselves to his development program but he got out-coached in a lot of close games last year which he'll need to improve greatly with the big set of headsets on this year to make any noise. At least he apparently has finally learned and accepted the idea that Wieclaw usually = 3 points on the opponents side of the field this year, so that's only going to probably help grind out a W or two somewhere along the way rather than steal a loss from the jaws of potential victory by going for it way too early on fourth down and getting stopped.
And another thing, Darius Smith, sophomore? No. I may have whiffed on Gunter's eligibility but Smith is a senior, no way he's got two more years after this one left unless he's getting a red-shirt followed by a medical red-shirt.

Former Nature Coast standout WR Ja’Juan Story has been granted his release from Florida, and USF is among the programs he’s considering transferring to, his uncle, Rudy Story, told the Times on Monday.

I like the depth chart for the fact alone that it gives us something to look at and the team something to strive for.
It is absolutely not set in stone. But it does confirm that Morris is the QB, and as I promised before, I am totally on board.
Surprises? Kirby, Davon Johnson, and pleasantly... Gabe Terry with the 2nd team.
Keep it up.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher calls marijuana use on college campuses an “epidemic” and believes colleges should create a better support system to help troubled athletes, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“(Schools must) understand every situation where a kid comes from, what his environment is, what’s the atmosphere, what kind of trauma did that young man experience as a kid,” Fisher said. “Is alcohol, drugs, those kinds of things constantly in his life from the time he remembers.
“The infrastructure of a program is the secret to it all. Everybody has Xs and Os, but it’s building a support system around those kids off the field to help them in different ways, to give them support in different ways, to give them treatment in different ways.”
Florida State’s Greg Reid and LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu, two of the nation’s top returning cornerbacks, were recently kicked off their teams for repeated violations, some involving marijuana.

"Two years ago, star QB Jeremiah Masoli (now in the Canadian Football League) was dismissed after, among other transgressions, being cited for possession during a traffic stop. One of the more memorable incidents happened in June, when Oregon state police pulled over a Nissan Altima after clocking it at 118 mph about 45 miles north of Eugene on Interstate 5. The car, which carried three passengers, smelled of pot, according to the police report. At the wheel was Cliff Harris, Oregon's standout cornerback/punt returner on the team that lost the 2010 national championship game to Auburn; also in the car was Ducks starting QB Darron Thomas.
"Who's got the marijuana in the car?" asked the officer, who would later note Harris looked tired and that his eyes were "blown."
Harris' reply? "We smoked it all."

Coach Al Golden said there are no games being played to motivate players.
“I’m not one of those ploy guys,” Golden said. “It is what it is. The problem is we have guys who think it is something that it isn’t. ‘Oh they’re going to play me anyway.’ It’s really not. As we coaches, this is Practice 13. We’re settling in now. If guys aren’t ready by Saturday, if guys aren’t making moves by Saturday, it’s over. After that, it’s time to move. We’re really not into playing games. You guys ask a lot of questions about a lot of guys that … we coach the guys who are out here every day and the guys who are dependable and reliable. That’s who we want to play with.”

FROM CASAGRANDE AT THE SS:
•On freshman wide receiver Robert Lockhart: “He has to pick up the offense better. Robert is talented. Robert is going to be a good player. Everybody learns at different speeds, different levels and everybody makes an impact at different times. We just have to get Robert gradually trending towards making an impact for the team.” Lockhart didn’t make a catch in the scrimmage and wasn’t listed on the depth chart after earning strong reviews early in camp.

MORE FORM THE SUN SENTINEL:
•Linebacker Thurston Armbrister, a newly named starter, was back on the field after missing a few practices with an injury.
•Linebacker Gionni Paul, who also missed several practices last week, was back on the field today.
•The bad news on the linebacker front? Backup middle linebacker Raphael Kirby “got banged up in the scrimmage,” Golden said and did not practice Tuesday. “As soon as we find out what his status is, we’ll release that. That’s all I can say right now,” Golden said.
•Jimmy Gaines “will have a dual role” at inside and outside linebacker.

"From a competitive standpoint, from an energy standpoint, from earning it every day, it’s amazing to me as young as we are in relative to last year that this team so much more mature football-wise from a football intelligence standpoint and a practice standpoint."
That says a lot about the MNW crew
O Donnell Played HS last year at 220ish and Reported to UM at 240 is up to 245 now and has a goal of at least 255. he is 6'6 and fast so he will be a force in the future.

LOL this kid will be a beast
Freshman LB Gabe Terry “is going to be a football player,” says Golden. “He doesn’t know whether the ball is stuffed or pumped, but he flies around, he plays with energy, relentless in pursuit, and needs to start to understand the defense and being the right position, but with those characteristics we’ll find ways to get him on special teams. As he grows his role will increase.” Golden and Terry, who is 6-foot-3 and just over 200 pounds, are both reminded that former UM great Ray Lewis was a 200-pound freshman linebacker at one point. “I’m not worried about his weight,” Golden said. “I’m just worried about if he understands the defense and where he needs to be.”

Depth chart news, is nothing but propaganda. It's stuff for us to talk about and news papers to write about. It's like watching a nascar race. One guy leads at lap 100 & by lap 200 he in 20 place and by races end he's back in the top 10. I don't care who's doing what now or what Goldie's motives are, I just want to see results on the field. Consistency, is what starting is all about. Knowing your job and performing. Anybody can have a bad game, practice or scrimmage but you have 2 many, you'll get banished to the bench. As far as the defense goes, it will probably take the better part of a month into the season before we'll start to see who rises to the top and is consistent.

GOLDEN: “It’s hard for me to say Seantrel, with no practices, can perform better than Ereck Flowers and Jermaine Johnson. It’s hard for anybody to say that. He needs to go perform. Flowers is playing really well right now — so well that he’s beating out Jermaine Johnson who is having a great camp.”

So Pierre, who's magically 41 pounds heavier than he was listed at last year, is so far the best DT over two highly touted prospects in Robinson and Grimble? Sure, no games being played at all with the depth chart.

For me, the floor is 7-5 and the ceiling is as high as 12-0....seriously....the toughest games have gone our way in the past and the ball has bounced our way before. If EVERYTHING went right, 12-0.....I am gonna go with 10-2....Loss to either VT or FSU (I think we get one of these) and a loss to someone that we shouldn't lose to, since that has been the norm recently.
In Golden We Trust!!!

******************************************
I'll give you a B-. If healthy, your QB's s/b fine. Not liking your RB position. WR's could be your difference maker. Your TE is a BEAST. Kickers are a dime a dozen. Green bay will have a top 10 defense but I prefer San Fran, Houston, Steelers...

Good day all. I have been MIA in a bad way. My mother is 82; she had a serious back operation 3 vertabrae fused....5 hours on the table...she walked that night!!!
Still very tough going in the appraisal business...maybe seeing a upward turn, but I am struggling.
I see a lot of young guys playing this year...I think it is good. We may not go 12-0, but I think the Golden System will start to show. Kids seem enthusiastic, and I like the idea of no favorites like I saw in the past.
Couple of thoughts..forget the Honey Badger....too many chances....repeated violator of rules needs to be gone...great player but no discipline or respect for authority and law.
Chad Johnson...a moron forever. I never liked him at all....love to have seen Tatum put the whammy on him. Too much talk and show. Never liked that kind of guy...give me a Jerry Rice, Reggie Wayne, AJ...or going back...Freddy Biletnikoff...or Howard Twilley...guys who play their AZZ off...never liked Johnson, TO or Moss.....talent yes, character or winner...NO!!!! How many SBs or NCs have they helped their team to win...ZERO!!! Just once let The Assassin nail them...my dream...or better yet....Ray Ray 52....not that other Ray Ray....
Soup, this is my Dream Week on TV Shark Week my favorite series....I always dreamed of having 3 GW Sharks as my linebackers, strength power speed attack.....like the old UM teams!!!! Feels good to be here thanks boss and everybody else!!!

Up - I agree with you. I had Steve Jackson like 4 years in a row so it is hit or miss. Hopefully, Bradford can open up the passing game so defenses won't key in on Jackson.
I basically won my league last year by having Aaron Rodgers. That guy was good for 30+ points on any given week. Who is on the cover of Madden 2013? Stay away from that dude....LOL.

Sounds like the Bermuda Triangle: Mike Barrow, Jesse Armstead and Darren Smith.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 14, 2012 at 01:22 PM
At Miami Norland High School, Smith played linebacker and was also a 185-pound pulling guard during his junior year. He was also a member of his high school track team were he competed in the 100 meters with a personal best time of 10.7 seconds.
Smith was a member of the Dennis Erickson's 1989 and 1991 national-championship teams for the University of Miami. He played strongside linebacker, where along with teammates Jessie Armstead and Michael Barrow, formed one of the greatest linebacking corps in college football history known as "The Bermuda Triangle".
He was a two-time All-American, the Big East Conference co-defensive player of the year as a senior and a two-time Butkus Award semi-finalist.
Smith stayed five years at the University of Miami, the first as a red-shirted freshman under Jimmy Johnson, so he could get a complete education. He earned his master's degree in marketing after getting his undergraduate degree in business management.
In 2006, he was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.

The fact that Golden is letting Henderson go back to Minn. tells me they don't expect much from him this year. I know he's had some stuff to deal with, but leaving again tells me his mind is somewhere else. Hard to see this as anything but another 5-star flame-out. He may have talent, but he lacks the desire/toughness to do anything with it. I hope for his own sake he finds some fortitude before he runs out of chances, cause I don't see him doing anything here.
I like what I see in #52. Perryman will wear that # well-he's gonna be fun to watch. Did anyone see him blow up Clements in pass protection? Yikes! Desire like his will trump 5-Star hype all day long.
Is it just me, or does Sean Spence look much bigger in that Steeler's uniform? He did miss a tackle, but I thought he was impressive. Its a shame he took the bad advice and left. Having him and Perryman on the field together would have been a heck of a show. Alas.

ESPN:
Boston College sophomore cornerback Al Louis-Jean injured his left foot on Monday and is expected to miss several games, the school announced on Tuesday.
The news comes just days after BC announced veteran tight end Chris Pantale is out with a broken foot. Pantale had surgery on Monday and will miss about eight weeks, according to the school.
These are the excuses BC fans won't want to hear about come November, but there's no question injuries to key players have played a role in the team's struggles. Coach Frank Spaziani has had numerous injuries to deal with during his tenure as head coach, including to former running back Montel Harris. Last year, five players suffered season-ending injuries, and BC applied for medical hardship waivers for Harris and defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey.

UNC STILL MIRED IN SOME SERIOUS CACA:
But it is. The school's cover is blown. The free ride, as I said, is over.
And to North Carolina's shame on so many levels, the cover was blown by a fan at North Carolina State.
Think about that. UNC football -- and probably basketball -- is going down, and it'll go down in part because a member of the PackPride message board found a damaging transcript belonging to a former UNC athlete. Humiliating, and not just because the whistle was blown by a fan of N.C. State, a school many UNC graduates look down upon.
Humiliating also because it underscores just how ignorant North Carolina wanted to be. UNC officials didn't want to know what was happening, so they stuck their heads in the dirt -- and it just got worse. How bad?
Maybe the ugliest academic scandal in NCAA history.
This one is worse than what happened in 2007 at Florida State. I mean, it's not even close. Florida State had some numbers that looked bad -- 61 athletes from 10 different teams -- but this UNC scandal dwarfs it.
FSU had 61 tainted players, almost all from the same class.
North Carolina has at least 54 tainted classes.
How many athletes were given free grades from the Department of African and Afro-American Studies? We don't know. UNC never wanted to find out, but the school has no choice now. The school mustered a halfhearted search for the truth earlier this year when it found those 54 tainted classes, but its search went back only to 2007. Despite efforts from the Raleigh News & Observer that suggested otherwise, the school held firm that the academic fraud started in 2007.
Enter the N.C. State fan and the found transcript. It belonged to former UNC two-sport star Julius Peppers.
It was from 2001.

The University of Miami Athletic Department is reaching out to West Coast Canes with a special package for the upcoming Miami Hurricanes’ football season.
As a special thank you to Hurricanes fans in Southwest Florida for their support during the team’s spring football scrimmage, all fans within the ‘239’ area code can now purchase a “2 for $239” season ticket deal. With this package designed for those deep into Canes Country, fans in the Fort Myers area can now catch every Hurricanes game this season for less than $20 per contest (savings of nearly 20%)!
The 2012 home schedule includes four match-ups against Atlantic Coast Conference competitors, including rival Florida State during Homecoming weekend (Oct. 20) and 2012 Sugar Bowl participant Virginia Tech (Nov. 1). The Hurricanes open up their home schedule against Bethune-Cookman (Sept. 15) and close it out against USF on Senior Day (Nov. 17).
To speak with a representative, call the Miami Hurricanes’ ticket office at 1-800-GO-CANES (462-2637).

An accreditation warning issued to Penn State is serious and necessary given the issues raised by a recent child sex-abuse scandal, but the school is unlikely to lose the all-important designation, experts said Tuesday.
They also expect the university to comply quickly with demands to show that its governance, finances and integrity meet standards set by its accreditation agency, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
"This is an entirely appropriate and anticipated action by Middle States given the strategic importance of voluntary peer review," said American Council on Education president Molly Corbett Broad. "It's really the basis on which public accountability is achieved in American higher education."
The Philadelphia-based Middle States Commission issued the warning last week based on the school's handling of molestation allegations against Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant football coach convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys.
Concerns include whether Penn State trustees provide sufficient oversight of the administration, the strength of the university's ethical standards and the school's compliance with government policies, such as those requiring campus crime reports, said Middle States spokesman Richard Pokrass.
The commission also wants the school to address its financial status in light of a $60 million penalty imposed by the NCAA and any lawsuits from Sandusky's victims.
Penn State must submit a report to the agency by Sept. 30. A small team of accreditors would then visit the school in State College.

I really don't care about depth charts, given that coaches put who they want on the field for any given situation, at any given time. I personally do not think that having large resources is "Sabanizing" at all. There has been an arms race in CFB for many years, Using experts in all fields and building great facilities and evaluating players based on multi criteria did not originate with Saban. Our own Al Golden is not part of his coaching tree but has brought that Pro Mentality to the U with the emphasis on the stepping up the U in the arms race of CFB.

The new student center:
it is on schedule to be completed in time for Fall 2013. I've heard that they had to change the interior design a little big when the architect tried to introduce blue elements. This was unacceptable to UM administration and they redid everything to reflect the orange and green. also, the new Rat will have a cool new lighting system installed and the ceiling will have a hurricane on top!
the U statue:
word is that we will have a statue of the U logo on campus, right next to the Rock.

I caught some replays of this past week's preseason football. Better stated, a few minutes of a handful.
Anyway, in those few minutes, I saw Micanor Regis make a nice tackle v. the Ravens, Tommy Streeter had a nice grab on 4th down and it was debatable that he did not get the first down.
As well, I saw Richard Gordon (not a typo) make a nice grab only to get called for holding a play or two later.
Best of luck to each of them...

WWiN, Henderson is a test subject for fans wanting to be right about the self-fulfilling prophecy of 5* washouts at UM it seems. Guy doesn't give up a sack last year playing with a bad back and now has the gall to go see his member of his immediate family buried and he's lacking something as a football player?
Give it a rest people, let Seantrel say goodbye to his family in peace. This platonic ideal that he has to be some football playing automation without a personal life ever factoring into his life in college is so myopic and unrealistic.
