This tradition actually started when CanesGirlNC, who is without a doubt a legend herself here on Canespace, started a series of player features with the same title. Three years ago she wrote features about former UM players QB Kenny Dorsey and TE Jeremy Shockey and called them "Legends of the Fall".
In our fan selection process true "Legends of the Fall" are those players who the fans feel will have outstanding or "breakout" seasons for the Canes on offense and defense this year.
It's not about simply picking the Hurricanes' best players, but your personal favorites among the UM players apart from the usual suspects and most obvious stars. Some bloggers choose first or second year players who are likely to break on the scene as freshmen or sophomores.
Four years ago those players were LB Sean Spence and WR Aldarius Johnson.
Three years ago the LOFs were QB Jacory Harris and DL Allen Bailey.
Two years ago they were WR Leonard Hankerson and CB Brandon Harris.
Last year it was RB Lamar Miller and LB Sean Spence filling the LOF roles.
There are your unusual selections and surprises like kicker, punter and lead body slammer Matt Bosher who just happened to be the Canes 2008 MVP. Who woulda thunk it?
Other bloggers are more traditional or conservative in their picks and select juniors or seniors who are projected to finally have that one incredible breakout season that leads them to become a high round NFL draft selection.
These picks could really be any defensive or offensive player who may be primed to explode on the scene after a solid previous season or a spectacular Summer with Swasey. Offensive and defensive linemen may not be popular or sexy picks but they are just as eligible as any other position player.
And don't forget special teams standouts too who can change a game with that one big play that shifts the entire momentum of a game. Some bold predictions even result in selections of completely unexpected dark horse candidates for this honor like Sam Shields a few years ago.
Sam "Sticky" Shields went from being buried on the depth chart at WR to CB where he shined and eventually got drafted by the Green Bay Packers.
If these long-shot picks actually play out, the blogger (like OcalaCane seen above with Shields at CaneFest in 2009) who picked them look like absolute geniuses. This is the most risky, but potentially most rewarding, approach of all.
Then again if you decide to take a leap of faith on a player and they don't ball out like you might have hoped or expected then you might wind up like old time blogger Cat5 who selected LB Arthur Brown or SolarCane who selected Thearon Collier and then well, U know what happens then.
It's your choice. Here are the 2012 LOF rules:
- All players are eligible this year.
- Pick one player on offense and one player on defense.
- Pick one freshman for "Freshman Impact Player of the Year".
- Pick one assistant coach or cooordinator for "Coach of the Year".
Now make your choices and U may win Canespace prizes (shirts, coffee, mugs) and other fun stuff like tickets to a 2013 UM football, basketball or baseball game!
BAM!

Duke Johnson/Anthony Chickillo.
Duke Johnson (duh).
Art Kehoe.
You have to hit all four this year to 'win?' Freshman/coaches seems redundant to me since the former's already eligible to be picked and deliver you to the pay window and the latter isn't putting up any stats to quantify-ably judge the correct choice but, whatever.
Glad The Thing is back with his other family, hope he's doing OK all things considered and is ready to unleash some marvel age clobberin' time.

Must be a Monday morning, Skreetz deniers are staking out 7-11's all over South Florida waiting for the CEO to walk in and buy a slurpee for himself so they can snap a photo to prove their exhibits regarding the former's non-existence.
Too bad the only ones getting laughed at are them, ask around, you'll hear it for yourself.

OGV...no, U do not have to hit all four to win. If you get ANY TWO right U are a winner. I just added the freshman because of popular demand and the coach because I thought it might be interesting.

News from our ProCanes, Undrafted Byrd is out performing 1st rd pick Floyd
proCane rookie LaRon Byrd in his first career NFL Pre-Season game led the Arizona Cardinals with four receptions for 54 yards with a long reception of 19 yards. Byrd was targeted six times on Sunday night. This is a great start for Byrd who is battling a very deep receiving corps for a roster spot. The Cardinals’ first round pick from Notre Dame Michael Floyd only had one reception for 15 yards.

All players are eligible this year.
1. Off: P. Dorsett (Liked this kid ever sense I seen him play his JR. yr in Highschool, the kid wants it!)
Def: B. McGee (Going out on the limb here, if he ends up being THAT guy it means our D is NASTY!)
2. Frehman Impact: D. Johnson (Sorry to follow the crowd, but he is a lot bigger then I thought)
3. Coach: P. Williams (Wanted to go with G. McDonald b/c I think he is going to get the WR's in line, BUT with this pick that means I am right about McGee AND that our DB's are NASTY and we win 10 games but get a bowl ban)

Smith - showed flashes last year but was out of shape, U-tuff should have him ready for this year

Fall Practice: Day 4
Morning showers and overcast skies didn’t stop Monday’s practice as the Miami Hurricanes continued for the fourth day of #CanesCamp at the Greentree Practice Fields. Monday was the second consecutive day in shoulder pads for the Canes.
Four days in and the competition continues for the Miami starting quarterback job. Both Stephen Morris and Ryan Williams have been solid through the first three days of camp and both continue to grow in the leadership role, according to head coach Al Golden.
“There’s a time and place for everything,” Morris said. “Right now, my job to try to get this team ready for the season. Whatever I have to do.”
Several defensive players make big plays during Monday’s wet and overcast practice, including redshirt sophomore DB Ladarius Gunter, who made a spectacular pass break-up in the corner of the end zone. Both sophomore DL Anthony Chickillo and redshirt senior DL Darius Smith recorded sacks on redshirt sophomore QB Ryan Williams.
On the first play of 11-on-11 drills, senior RB Mike James took a Williams hand-off for a touchdown. Both quarterbacks Stephen Morris and Williams took an equal amount of snaps with the first team offense.
Junior OL Seantrel Henderson, who had been in Minnesota attending the funeral of a childhood friend, returned to campus Sunday evening and made his #CanesCamp debut Monday.
#CanesCamp continues Tuesday with Miami’s fifth practice, which is slated for 8:20 a.m.

I LIKE SMD as a person and as a reporter and she has been a friend of Canespace but to be honest I think she did over-step a little on the SH#77 reports.
But it is part of the media game to generate hits and revenue. She almost has to do that as part of her "assigned duties" at the MH.

Here's Manny's interview on Canes with Curtis on WQAM earlier:

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 06, 2012 at 02:37 PM
Either way what she did in covering the SH story pales in comparison to what ITU has put out there before for the same purpose: generate hits and revenue.
Fortunately hits and revenue does not drive Canespace. Love for the Miami Hurricanes does. That is why we posted this after Day 2 when the whole controversy started:
"Some UM beat reporters were trying to make a big deal about the fact that OL Seantrel Henderson has not yet returned from Minnesota where he was attending the funeral of a close friend. Golden initially stated that he was not real specific about the time of Henderson's scheduled return to South Florida but later implied that the big man was expected to be back in Miami this afternoon and resume practice with the team on Sunday."
"With Henderson absent again on Day 2, Jon Feliciano, who is slotted to play right guard this season after spending most of last season at right tackle, returned to RT as he slid slid back over in front of Freshman Ereck Flowers for the early morning practice session."
