ACC Proposes, Notre Dame Accepts

The Atlantic Coast Conference Council of Presidents has unanimously voted to accept the University of Notre Dame as a new member. The Irish will compete as full members in all conference sponsored sports with the exception of football which will play five games annually against league programs.

"We are committed to keeping the Atlantic Coast Conference a vibrant and competitive league dedicated to ensuring the appropriate balance of academics, athletics and integrity," said the ACC Council of Presidents in a joint statement. "The addition of Notre Dame further strengthens the rich tradition and culture of the ACC as well as allowing for future academic collaboration and we enthusiastically welcome them into the league."

"The ACC was founded on the cornerstones of balancing academics, athletics and integrity," said Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford. "Our partnership with Notre Dame only strengthens this long-standing commitment. Notre Dame enhances the league's unique blend of public and private institutions that are international in scope. The collective alumni and fan bases cover the entire country with exceptionally strong roots up and down the Atlantic Coast. This is a terrific milestone in the evolution of the ACC and showcases tremendous solidarity and vision by our Council of Presidents."

"The ACC is composed of some of the most highly respected universities in the country, and we at Notre Dame look forward to joining them," said Notre Dame President, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. "With a mix of institutions - many of which are also private, similar to Notre Dame in size, and committed to excellence in research and undergraduate education - the ACC is an exceptionally good fit for us academically, as well as athletically."

"We have monitored the changing conference landscape for many months and have concluded that moving to the ACC is the best course of action for us," said Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics. "We are able to maintain our historic independence in football, join in the ACC's non-BCS bowl package, and provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports."

With the addition of Notre Dame, the ACC's future membership includes 11 institutions ranked among the top 58 in the 2013 U.S. News & World Report survey of "America's Best Colleges", more than any other conference also competing at the highest level athletically.

"The University of Miami is thrilled with the addition of the University of Notre Dame to the Atlantic Coast Conference,” said Shawn Eichorst, University of Miami Director of Athletics. “Notre Dame is internationally recognized for its academics and athletics and its core beliefs and mission are in line with ACC member institutions. The news today further solidifies the ACC as one of the nation's premier conferences and Miami looks forward to welcoming the Irish to the league."

In addition to extending an invitation to Notre Dame, the Council of Presidents voted to increase the conference exit fees to three times the annual operating budget. Currently this would equate to an exit fee of over $50 million.

UM head coach Al Golden had this to say about the Fighting Irish joining the ACC: “It is a great day for the ACC. I’m just really excited about what our leadership is doing – the presidents, ADs and at the conference office. We are fortifying our league and making it stronger. We’ll see what the implications are for the bowl games and things of that nature. Certainly this is going to be a big improvement for us.”

Golden on adding a top-tier program to the conference schedule: “We’ve been playing these types of teams. Obviously, we are playing Notre Dame this year. I think there will be a trend once everyone figures out how the new rankings are going to be with the strength of schedule. I think there is going to be a new paradigm that everyone has to make their schedules based on that. Nobody will want to be left out because their schedule is too weak out of conference. I know this, our league is getting better from top to bottom.”

Somebody needs to get a hold of NBC and do it now. NBC and their new channel NBC sports which from what Ive read is not doing so well and tell them it does not matter how much it will take but they need to buy the ACC out of their contract with ESPN and now. This is what I'm thinking from NBC and ACC point of view. On ESPN you will allows play second behind the SEC with ESPN thats all they really care about I mean really there going to Tenn UF with gameday really?

NBC who gets killed on Saturdays during college football and basketball needs this to compete with ESPN/ABC and FOX(who now has the Pac 12 and Big 12 as well as Conf USA). NBC can air ACC football all day on Saturdays 12, 330, and a primetime game as well as do this with there NBC sports channel. Than during college basketball you get the rights to the best college basketball conf in the league. YOu will kill ESPN and CBS on Saturdays.

The problem would be get ND on board because it doesnt help them much other than telling them that they can now join the ACC in football(which they dont want to) and maybe give them some more perks to make them happy Im sure they could work something out with all that. Heck NBC can even start there own pregame show and imagine all the other shows that they could get out of this for there nbc sports network instead of re airing the olympics. '

I have been working 10 hr days 10 in a row for a buddy of mine taking down trees. $120 per day tax free...and squeezing in appraisals...and practice. Very tough...but glad to be working. We won our opener 24-0...against the runner up from the North Conference who is the preseason favorite. They were good; we were better Saturday.

Sad sad day Sat...what the F#*k happened? That was embarrassing. We have a long way to go folks. That hurts like the OB closing, and so many of the bad losses under the "guidance" of Clappy and Onionhead. We have really fallen, not relevant at all at this time.

Not be lost on the ND news is the new $50,000,000.00 buyout clause that all but guarantees the ACC's stability going forward. We can thank John Swofford for moving quickly and quietly to get this deal done!
I don't think the ACC could have held off the SEC again if they came calling for FSU, Clemson, or VT. Mark my words the final pieces of the national playoff/conference alignment will be decided within the next two seasons. For once we will be able to be spectators and not victims as the powers that be chew The Big East to shreds!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but bashing Vilma will get a response from me.

He is a top notch football player, a loyal Cane, was actually a very good student who graduated with a degree in finance (not easy!), a very hard worker, contributed either 500,000 or close to a million to the program, and finally stood up for his rights against Emperor Goodell.

I'm convinced there was a bounty system with the Saints, as there pretty much was in EVERY NFL lockeroom, in one form or another, though maybe not as blatant. He was disputing his role as a funder, and was demanding to see the evidence. Not unreasonable, and I tend to believe him.

I guess that makes him arrogant, or just a little bit "uppity". I get it.

Maybe next time, you might want to get off your high horse and think things through, do a liitle research, before bashing a great Cane.

I am amazed that VA Cane would bash Vilma who is clearly innocent, the facts came out and judges all ruled for Vilma. Vilma is very intelligent and a great Cane. There was no facts to support he was funding a bounty program. Now granted there probably was a bounty program and the fact he was involved in a bounty program in college seems to be lost and many people are not talking about that, however bounties exist whether that is money or dinner or bragging rights or a day of practice off they exist and it is just human nature, there are bounties in war too and they might be sick but they exist because they get results. The best coaches are the best motivators and bounties motivate.

Ohio, you inspired me to look into more stats and so I did (slow day at work today lol). I decided to look up stats on the defensive side of the ball for other MAC schools and to see what their numbers were like.
Bowling Green YPG from 2006 to 2010. 318.5, 424.5, 343.4, 398.2, 432.0 Allowed Defensive scoring average for those same years. 28.3, 32.1, 23.2, 27.5, 33.6

Ohio - From 2006-2011 YPG allowed. 302.9, 407.5, 361.4, 348.5, 353.4, 361.0 Pts allowed 18.1, 29.9, 27.2, 21.3, 23.8, 22.1
By the way Ohio was 10-4 in that final year.

Ball State- From 2006-2008 YPG allowed(Brady Hoke was coach) 387.1, 432.3, 368.2
Pts allowed 32.2, 28.3, 20.5

Now a couple non-MAC teams.

Arkansas from 2008 to 2011 (Petrino era)YPG Allowed. 375.2, 401.2, 347.9, 362.8
Pts allowed 31.2, 25.1, 23.4, 22.2

Looks like MAC defenses just give up a bunch of yards and points no matter the scheme or the players. So looking at the end result as I did when you posted Temples defensive numbers is not the best way to analyze Dnofrios ability as a defensive coach.

Looking at Temples numbers I gotta admit that it looks like Golden and D'No have a pretty good scheme once the players learn it. And in comparison to the rest of the MAC that defense not only improved every year, but put up better defensive numbers than anyone else in the MAC.

I am interested to see what they can do with our defense after this year. I think I'm starting to believe again. If the numbers don't lie, then we may have a very good coaching staff on hand, we just have to be patient.

Willie I think those numbers would be better with the caliber of athletes we can get at Miami. In the Mac all defenses give up big numbers. 317 ypg would be considered really good for the Mac. I was on the I hate D'No side but looking at the numbers they tell me something positive. You have to look at the numbers wholistically in the whole Mac and not just temples numbers. I could be wrong but I really hope not.
